Gluten Free Haddock & Chips, in a dedicated GF fryer! So good! [GF]
    Damian L.

Having Celiac disease makes dining at restaurants pretty difficult most of the time, and when it is possible, it's often a chore to explain the condition. You then may get something that's safe or maybe not, and even then usually the menu is limited to something simple. Not the case at all with The British Embassy Fish and Chips. Their entire Thai menu is gluten free and they have a dedicated gluten free fryer for Fish and Chips. Basically, heaven to a Celiac. --Food: I've tried two things so far. Naturally, had to try the Fish and Chips (Haddock) first as it is part of the name after all. The fish was delightfully crunchy and fried and the chips (fries) pleasantly crispy. Sometimes steak fry type potatoes can get soft, but they do it right here. The gluten free offering doesn't provide curry dip or the malted vinegar so I can't vouch for those, but the tartar sauce is great! (And there's ketchup for fries.) The fish portion is huge and it took me almost an entire 30 minutes to eat it all. I'm also a slow eater with a sensitive stomach, hah. The batter started to fall off a little, but it comes with the territory of a gluten free batter, so I can't knock it. It was all delicious, 5/5 dish, will order again. I also had the Red Curry with Chicken, spice level 4 out of 5. I love Thai food and eat it at least twice a week, and as I work downtown, I'll definitely start getting it here. This was also a generous portion and all of the vegetables were tasty with the chicken nice and tender. I will say, 4 out of 5 spicy is quite spicy with noticeable chilis in the curry, so if you're unsure whether you want it really spicy or not, perhaps start with a spice level 3. --Cost: The gluten free Fish and Chips was about $24 I think. The portion was huge so it was worth it, but it's not the absolute cheapest thing around. It's hard to put a price on safe food for Celiacs though, so it's not a problem. The non-GF Fish and Chips are $22 I think. The Thai entrees are about $16. --Experience: The interior is themed like a British Pub. At least that's in my mind what it is, I've never been to the UK. The staff and owners are incredibly nice and explained the menu and what was safe for me. Everyone was fantastic. --Overall: Probably my favorite new place to eat downtown. A great option for Celiacs in that there are two different kinds of Fish and Chips and about 8 different Thai dishes. I suspect over the course of the rest of 2025 I'll have tried them all and can update this review. If you like Fish and Chips, Thai food, or have Celiac and want to try something new, I absolutely recommend The British Embassy Fish and Chips.

My partner's haddock and chips was delicious. The haddock was fried a golden brown. My Massamun Curry was fantastic. We shared the Sticky Pudding for dessert because neither of us had tried it - excellent decision. We enjoyed the pub atmosphere but the service was the highlight of our visit. It appeared to be the owners who greeted, seated, and served us. They made us feel like guests rather than customers.

This was my first time having food at a British restaurant which was interesting. Great vibes and decor here. The service was quick and our server was helpful. It's great that they have gluten free options, however I'm not 100% sure if they have any measures to prevent cross contamination. The gluten free options for both the fish and the sticky toffee pudding that I had looked identical to the regular ones that my friends got. The fish n chips was crispy and hot. The sticky toffee pudding was probably the highlight of the meal it was warm, sweet, and gooey. The cost of the fish n chips was a little bit more than I expected given the serving size and the fact that fish n chips is usually very affordable. I'll probably be coming back here one day to try some of the breakfast items.

I was the only person on a Sunday night. Atmosphere was casual with few TVs on. Service was quick. I was surprised because they also serve Thai food. Pad thai was good. Would give this place 4/5.

Another great meal at the Embassy, along with the best fish & chips in town, the wife and I decided to try the Thai food as well. It was delicious! Who knew this English chip house could pull it off?

Celebrating St Patrick's weekend. What better than a draught Guinness?!

First, apologies I didn't get pics of our Cod and Chips. My wife and I are wondering around downtown Richmond m, wanting to find an Irish vibe for St Patricks weekend, and we find The British Embassy. The server started us off right with discounts on a Harp and a Guinness. Then we spit a Scotch Egg: fantastic! Then split cod and chips, really good. I couldn't have asked for more!

Good food, good people/staff, good ambiance! Perfect British Pub vibes! Cute decor for photo ops. Not pictured: Had the beer battered haddock & chips, a scotch egg, and curry puffs; pictured: sausage rolls... all very good! 10/10 would eat again

Absolutely wonderful! A British and Thai treat in the middle of RVA. Scotch egg was a perfect soft boil and pad Thai is a must have. Kitchen staff is Thai and they give an authentic spice experience. The owners (husband and wife) are a joy and deliver a one of a kind meal.

My wife and I certainly enjoyed our first visit to The British Embassy in downtown Richmond! We usually visit new fooderies in the afternoon just before the dinner folks arrive. The cozy restaurant was exceptionally clean and airy. Our charming server was most friendly and courteous as we ordered the cod fish and chips and of course, Guinness to compliment the meal. Our meals were served nice and hot. The fish was very tasty with a mild flavorful batter-coating and the chips were substantially light, fluffy, and mealy, with a soft, cooked potato texture and not greasy. (Unlike the standard crispy, standard-fare French fries from a fast food place.) We chose the sticky toffee pudding as dessert and what a treat! We look forward to our next visit to sample the other British-style offerings. The Thai selections on the menu are also very tempting.

Tasteless awful half eaten fish and chips

I'm from London and this was the worst fish and chips I've ever stasted here in the US and well this rubbish wouldn't dare to be sold in the UK. The helpings were small compared to say thenBOAThouse venues! The chips were dry and tasteless, the fish even worse. No salt, stale cod and sad sad wet batter. Awful and a waste of money. We couldn't even finish it though we tried. Yuk

Everything on the menu was a 5, okay I make my own gravy and it wasn't that (but it was good, and a little salty but very good with the bangers and mash. ) Bangers & mash very good! Burger very good! Jalapeño poppers awesome. The curry fries with chicken tenders and onions will blow your mind with flavor. Wow on the reubin and the turkey avocado sandwiches. Had a waitress that laughed. Liverpool was playing and I imagine it's a great space to watch this if that's your speed. Sunday lunch menu had a good mixture of things. I was drawn into the special, which was a pork belly quiche with Irish cheese and green onions. This was ultimately quite fine. Big quiche fan but this wasn't my favorite crust nor my favorite cheese. And if I hadn't been told there was meat in it I'm not sure I would have noticed. The side salad had a nice balsamic dressing. What was most bothersome, though, was the size of the quiche. It was cheap enough but not really a lunch potion. Wish I had gone with a sanwich. Drinks were good-pretty standard. The service was astounding and everyone was so nice. Probably wouldn't come back for the food but if you want to watch some football (soccer) it's a nice option.

The bar was getting full, but there were still a few tables left to choose from. This is a dive, similar to Poe's Pub, so if that's not your scene, don't come here. That said, we really like the character of this place, even if it smells a little funky upstairs. It adds to the character and charm, or at least, that's what we tell ourselves. The same bartender as usual (still don't know his name) helped us. They do have a sour beer. It's not as fruity as I like, though, still passable. (Seriously, Patrick Henry's, y'all need to order some from Texas and Oklahoma sours for the real deal; Martin House Brewing Co. in Ft Worth does them so right). Anyway, we ordered the goat cheese bread appetizer (warm apple butter, goat cheese, and sunflower seeds = immense pleasure). For entrees, I grabbed the Hot Chicken Pizza (hot sauce and pickles!), and my partner went for the chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries. There was so much food that we had leftovers, as usual. They heated up well in the air fryer and were nearly as good. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS PLACE. I will admit, it does look slightly seedy, but the food here is magnificent. The pizza was thin, crispy, and full of delicious flavor. I swear, the chefs here know what they are doing with their menu. It's simple, yet elegant. The appetizers are simple, yet they easily compete with The Brooklyn and Pinky's apps, for example, which are more affordable and in a more relaxed environment. Do yourself a favor and get the goat cheese. It sings. The customers here are chill and interesting, and the bartender is calm and cool; he never seems out of sorts, even when the bar is full with a line out the door. I wholeheartedly recommend Patrick Henry's. We have been here twice now, and the service and food have been excellent both times (Sept 2025, May 2026).
