    Upstairs...so plush!

Holy Smokes. This is certainly not an understated place. As soon as I entered, I felt vacuumed into some dark and slightly foreboding universe, dimly lit with black and red all over. While I expected fake blood and skulls amongst the details, I realized The Bridge was nothing to fret over- the decor is much more rockabilly than death metal, thank God. Once I got over my initial shock, I realized how cool and original this place is amongst other Hoxton/Shoreditch offerings. For such an uber-modern neighborhood, The Bridge truly stands out in taking you back to the 19th/20th centuries (the music here is 50's rock, a la Little Richard). The upstairs level is the real gem- you've somehow been transported into an eccentric, plush Victorian-style lounge. While I think could make for an excellent upscale cocktail bar in Notting Hill or Mayfair, people come to The Bridge for the coffee, tea and small selection of pastries & cakes. It is a bit pricey, though. I'm pretty sure my green tea at the splendid Ottolenghi in Belgravia was less expensive...and tasted much better. A portion of tiny baklava bites come at £4- though steep, it WAS delicious. If all of the pastries were of this caliber I'd make sure to return again and again. I came on an un-busy Sunday afternoon and can imagine it's a much livelier vibe on a Friday/Saturday night. Highly recommended!

I've been waiting for an excuse to have a closer look at The Bridge for ages. This intriguing place on busy Kingland Road is squeezed right next to a railway bridge. It's got a lovely dark and mysterious feel to it and invites to relax with a cup of tea or glass of wine. What a welcome surprise to find a cafe this close to Shoreditch not lit up by MacBooks. I'm sure solo guests are made feel very welcome by the staff, but The Bridge just calls out for relaxing company and a good old chat. I met up with a friend and settled on one of the opulent tables upstairs. Turkish pizzas come as a bit of a surprise but provide a tasty snack to go with the rather lovely house red. Everything here is on the kitsch side but it completely works, especially on a rainy Autumn evening.

This lovely little cafe just popped up the other day so myself and my housemates popped down, you know, to test it out for the locals. Selfless. It's a tiny little place with seating for about 15. The walls are almost completely covered in kitsch prints and paintings, boxing gloves and old signs to Brick Lane. In the window and behind the counter are pieces of golden machinery- the espresso cup dispenser (pictured) and an old gramaphone give the place a real retro feel to it. Hot chocolate I had was delicious and the cream on the top was fresh and devine. My housemates' coffee was lovely and rich, they claimed. The owners are Italian (I believe) and introduced themselves to us and invited us to come back again (which we shall) which gave it the personal touch sometimes lacking in establishments. It's the sort of place you can imagine being a cover for a waterhole in a time of prohibition or something, although I think it only does coffee and no booze! Although with the array of syrups they had you could spend a twitchy afternoon trying out them all! I'd recommend it as a place to catch up with a small group of friends/family or perhaps a date of you can get a seat! Small but perfectly formed!

A lovely coffee shop with vintage coffee makers lovingly preserved to keep working by the Greek owner. We had a lovely chat with him as we sat at the bar and had coffees and lunch. The food was a nice portion with a large helping of green salad and the most yummy couscous that has hit my plate in a long while. It is a small venue, so seating can be a challenge if you're looking to pop in a stay a while, but he told us that they will be opening the upstairs soon for seating -- in fact, according to the photos, it looks like it could be open now. It's conveniently located right at the Waterston Street drop for the 243, 147 and other buses. It's definitely worth the visit if nothing other than to see these beautiful machines in action as you grab your coffee to go.

A live birthday gig brought me here and I'm really glad, as it's quite unassuming from the outside. The interior truly takes quirky to a new level. It feels like you're teleported into a bar in a rural part of America, that's brandishing it's owners travellers trinkets on the wall like a dusty 3D wallpaper. As you walk into this beautifully retro American themed bar, you're greeted by an assortment of antiques and bizarre bits and bobs that fill the walls and reminded me of some of the bars in America during my travels. Honestly you could look for hours when you explore the several rooms tucked away in this maze of a bar. From obscure to retro, classic to neon lights and signs. Every inch of this place is covered in stuff, but not in a cluttered way somehow. The lighting in here is awesome too, with the neon lights giving off eery colour and some old school lights giving off a moody glow, it's relaxing and easy on the eyes in here. Take a ganders upstairs and there's an adorable room designed for small groups to gather around small tables and talk the night away on vintage victorian seats. This place is honestly the coolest bar I've been to in London in terms of unique styling. They also serve food here but I didn't try it so cannot comment. Though it's not the usual selection of pub food but more of a cafe - and Turkish themed at that. This place is a cafe, a coffee shop and bar rolled into one. It has an awesome atmosphere and isn't crazy expensive either. I paid just over a tenner for a double cointreau and coke, which is standard for london. But for the experience? Too good. Gather your friends, organise an event, go for a drink and enjoy the experience of this time capsule cafe/bar/thingy. Cash only.

this place is fantastically well decorated and the coffee machines are majestic centerpieces. im rating this highly because its not all looks, the coffee here is quite good. i would have given them five stars but i think their service had undertones of hardselling everything in the place. I asked for tap water and the guy was intent on selling me bottled water it just came off too desperate - unnecessary.

In 9 out of 10 interactions, the staff were genuinely excellent--warm, attentive, and clearly trained in the fine art of making guests feel like royalty (as you'd expect at this price point). There are multiple restaurants and bars to choose from, a steady stream of live music drifting through the late afternoons into the evenings, and quite possibly the best cleaning and turn-down service I've ever encountered--truly next-level pillow fluffing. Now, my one gripe: the light--or lack thereof. Despite having three decently sized windows, they're covered in a mysterious film that blocks natural light more effectively than blackout curtains ever could. It gives the rooms (and oddly, the lobby too) a slightly subterranean vibe--perfect if you're a vampire, less ideal if you're someone who enjoys knowing whether it's day or night.

Drinks are creative, whimsical, fun and playful. I'm not much of a drinker so I was concerned this would be a bit much for me, but this is about the experience, the drinks werent too big or overly boozy, or anything. The themes from the 39 euro tasting menu are: 1. Cocktail history. This is the most traditional drink direction 2. Naughty childhood. Drinks are candy and dessert based. Not necessarily overly sweet so don't worry about that. 3. Nature. 4. West meets east. Asian themed drinks. This was most creative and I wish I got this one. 5. Gourmet. French themed. This is the one that didn't get chosen from our group. 6. Get ready and go. London themed. All the drinks were super creative. There was so much thought around presentation put into them. This hotel was once a bank, and the conversion to a 74 room hotel was well executed. On the negative side, the sound insulation between rooms is inadequate, and the HVAC system is not equipped from very hot weather. Although not without flaws, Threadneedles impressed me overall. Arrival: Friendly and helpful doorman Check-in: Efficient and friendly check-in. Acknowledged my Marriott status. Room (314): Nice king room with all the usual appliances including Nespresso coffee maker, tea kettle, mini-refrigerator, iron, TV, etc. Bed: Good king bed, decent linens. Sleep quality: overall good but the walls are paper thin. I was fortunate that the neighboring rooms did not have noisy occupants at night. But in the morning, I could clearly hear a parent in the adjoining room lecturing his young daughter. Bathroom: Spacious bathroom with excellent tub. Housekeeping: excellent housekeeping service and turn down service. Service:Overall excellent service HVAC: I visited during a record setting heat wave in London, and the HVAC system in the room was completely inadequate. The room was hot the whole time. Fortunately, staff brought me a fan, the fan and my extreme fatigue were the only factors that allowed me to sleep the first night. Seriously consider another hotel of London is experiencing a heat wave. Tips: (1) I was able to take the train from Heathrow (had to change to a second train at Paddington), and it was an easy walk from the train station to the hotel even with a large suitcase. (2) There's a great pub 1 block away called The Counting House. (3) Threadneedles is in the heart of the financial district. Many pubs and restaurants in the area are not open on the weekend.

Upon walking in, you are greeted and in awe of the beautiful sitting area with its amazing stained glass dome. I found myself in awe each time I walked through. The rooms are also exceptional. Very tastefully decorated and not over the top, as some other higher-end hotels seem to be, lately. I also found that the cleaning service and turn-down service were magical. I don't know how they seemed to know when I had left my room, but upon my return it was always clean, and at night the turn-down service was a lovely surprise to find a small mint and a linen mist on my pillow. Now let's talk about something which is an often-overlooked feature of a hotel stay: the breakfast. This is typically a throwaway perk that anyone who travels a bit understands. At best, it's a spread of cereals and maybe a bagel or two. Most of the time it's served in a crappy lobby with coffee that has been sitting there for hours and servers who want to be anywhere else but there.  It usually screams, "Eat fast.  Please leave." Not here. Oh no. Even the breakfast is next level here. Sure, it contained all the normal things you would expect, such as bagels, toast, and cereal, but then they took it to the next level with some beautiful doughnuts, sliced meats and some cheese, yogurt with all the toppings you could want, and a beautiful selection of sliced fruit. However, what really made the breakfast experience phenomenal were the people. Specifically, Amesh, Epon, and Mohin. Each morning when I would walk through the doors, I would be greeted, and they would immediately take a coffee or tea order to go make it themselves. They were also incredibly friendly and attentive. I found their smiles infectious and a great way to start the day. This type of attitude was prevalent amongst all the staff.  They were simply the friendliest people of my day, and that really meant a lot when you are thousands of miles from home, in a city you don't know, by yourself.  Thank you!
