A most excellent place to grab a fantastic dinner. All the employees were friendly and jovial; their recommendations were spot on. Salad made table side was something new for me and the salad was "lick the bowl" amazing.... I'll definitely copy that selection and dressing. The crab stuffed appetizer was very good and cheesy. The rib eye entree with Au Gratin was cooked to preference, but mid way through you got the heavy taste of butter. Salt, Pepper and Garlic is how I season my steaks. My first time dining at The Brickyard was as a guest at birthday party. Our experience was wonderful from the time we arrived until we left three hours later. As a group of 12, we were seated in a smaller room off the dining area. This was just perfect for our group. The staff were friendly and professional and our waiter, Brian, was exceptional. I have no idea how many other tables Brian was serving that night because his attention to us was outstanding. Our pre-dinner drinks were served accurately and timely. His recommendations were "spot on" for those indecisive in our group. The menu had something for everyone. No one in our group was disappointed with their selection; and we all loved receiving the take-home breakfast muffin. My husband and I will definitely return. I look forward to ordering a steak or perhaps trying the elk. read more

My family and I came here for Mother's Day having never been here before but were excited due to the excellent reviews. Unfortunately the regular menu was not available and it was a rather odd brunch setup. We weren't expecting that and there was no info on their website. Had we known we would have skipped it. There was a few entrees that were part of the brunch but they were limited. The only steak available was the NY steak and I had wanted a petite filet, but we were still excited though the menu was kind of confusing until the waiter came to (sort of) clarify things. He was very laid back and left some things out in his explanation. We were led to believe this brunch started with a plate of fruit, a chocolate muffin and a croissant for each of us but in fact it was one plate for three of us to share. So I cut the muffin, very small croissant and even one strawberry all into thirds for us to share. That was strange to me, why not just give us each a muffin and tiny croissant? The croissant was good, muffin was fine, fruit was pretty good and fresh but didn't stretch far. We were later offered more fruit but that was after the next course. The next course was a choice of poached egg on crab cake topped with crab, or plain poached egg on potato cake, or crème brûlée French toast. I chose the crab poached egg. The Dungeness crab sprinkled on top was really yummy, the poached egg was perfectly runny, the crab cake was good. Avocado was a bit too firm. No big deal. One person got the French toast. It tasted like plain French toast and was a little charred in spots. After that we were told that the prime rib bonus that came with any entree was something we had to go get ourselves at the bar. There was also a crepe station we were not initially made aware of. Also when the waiter took our steak orders he sauntered off without having asked the most important question - how do you want your steak cooked? I had to say "excuse me" and have him come back so we could tell him. Once at the crepe and prime rib station, we found that the crepes left were two choices, neither sounded great so we just went for the prime rib. Horseradish bowl was empty but luckily there was another small container left because prime rib needs horseradish. There was no au jus as an offering but I wasn't too bothered. The prime rib was tasty and perfectly cooked. A little fatty but we just worked around it. Food arrived and it was disappointing. My steak was cooked internally just fine but it was chewy. The sear on it was pretty burnt and that's all I could taste, plus an odd taste of cow I can't describe. I couldn't eat my steak but took it home for someone who would eat anything. It came served with a pretty big portion of scrambled eggs. I wasn't expecting eggs again so that was pretty meh. It also came with a potato cheese casserole which was good but not great. Potato cakes are also good but not anything memorable really. My daughter had those. She also had the salmon which was served on a bed of scrambled eggs. No lemon slices or fresh herbs on the salmon and though it was cooked very nicely, it needed the kick of acidity and brightness. Cocktails took 20-25 minutes to come out though the restaurant wasn't all that busy. That was disappointing as on my special day I wanted to get my drink on without too much delay. It was fairly weak, I definitely didn't feel it, and it cost a whopping $15. A beer was more reasonable at $6. Finally, we asked about dessert and were offered huckleberry shortcake. Someone in our party asked if that was the only offering, the waiter seemed to insinuate it was. So, we all ordered the shortcake. About a minute later I heard a different waiter at the table next to ours giving the patrons two dessert choices, one of which was chocolate lava cake. We were not offered that so I flagged a helper down and let her know the situation. We got what we wanted but ultimately the chocolate lava cake was not very good. Nothing warm and melty in the center. Just a cold, dense chocolate cake that tasted like their chocolate muffins. The huckleberry shortcake with ice cream was delicious. Here's the breakdown: Service - Slow and too laid back, things not understood and there was no organization of anything. The only thing consistent was the young lady clearing the plates we set at the edge of the table. Waiter was very nonchalant and didn't ask how we wanted our steaks cooked, had to flag him down. Food - Mediocre. All around. Steaks were chewier than expected despite being cooked to order. Potato dishes were pretty decent but nothing memorable. Highlights were prime rib, the sprinkling of Dungeness crab meat on the poached egg, and the huckleberry shortcake with ice cream. Overall, even though it wasn't dinner which is mostly what they do, I won't be back. A two hour dining experience should hopefully involve great service and delicious food. One of the best dining experiences downtown Boise! Excellent selection of starters, mains, and sides with seasonal and rotating specials that keep us coming back. Happy hour ends at 6 so make sure to get your half off top shelf pours in! This time around the oysters were a pacific variety imported from Oregon. They could have been shucked a bit cleaner, however, the subtle sweetness and oceanic flavor of these meaty mollusks overarched the unseparated muscle. French onion soup was a hit with the perfect amount of Gruyere cheese which made strings for miles! A quick lemon sorbet palette cleanser readied the tastebuds for the main. The Alaskan halibut was beyond delicious and a single diver scallop seared to perfection brought bold flavor. Baked Brie fillet Mignon... couldn't go wrong. Perfect medium rare and seasoned with a hefty hand. Dinner service was fluid with staff of all levels continuously clearing plates and keeping beverages full. I had a reservation for 2 at 7 pm on Friday night. When I walked in there was no host/hostess upfront and 5 different employees walked by before someone said the host would be up soon. When we were seated, we were only provided with one menu and had to get our own second menu. Our server was not terribly attentive, he never returned to check if we were done with our courses, only staff members were the ones who actually assisted us. It did take too long to get every drink and course, about 2-3 minutes longer than expected each time. The food was good, but not stellar. Both of our filets were ordered as Medium-Rare but were both closer to rare and some of the drinks received did not match the description on the menu. The standouts from our meals were the potatoes. Had lunch here and glad we did. Nicely decorated, very clean restaurant. The waiter, Rene, was polite and on the ball. My wife and son-in-law had the Salmon and Chips. We experienced the Brickyard last night, for our first time. The Elk Tenderloin was really good. The stuffed mushrooms we got as an appetizer would be a pass for me next time. Not that good. The rolls were good. The table-side salad experience is overrated. Plus there is a tip jar right in front of your face on the salad cart. You feel like a jerk if you don't tip but at a regular restaurant, the salad just comes with the meal. I would skip the salad next time and just get the French onion soup. You don't have to tip for that. The salted caramel cookie with ice cream was an amazing dessert! Delicious. The highlight of the night for us was definitely the dueling pianos!!! Fun & entertaining! UPDATE: The owner of the restaurant contacted me about the issue and after some back and forth, I have decided to give this restaurant another chance. Stay tuned for another review in a couple months. -------- -------- The waiter gets the same review as the restaurant. He was polite, but in a pretentious manner. When a customer goes to a steakhouse and orders a steak medium rare, or well-done I'm sure they are aware how the color of the meat should look, if they are ignorant of the fact, all they have to do is look at the menu. Since it includes a section detailing this fact. So, why insult the intelligence of a customer by having the waiter inform the table of something we were not only aware of, but did not ask for clarification on? The second thing that comes to mind, is the manner in which our table was checked on. The waiter seemed to be overloaded with tables in the front of the house in addition to the tables in the back banquet room. Regardless, when you come by the table to check on the satisfaction of your guests, it is inappropriate to make comments about how fast the food disappeared off the table. It disappeared, because we had other reservations and we were not expecting to wait as long as we did for our dinner. The restaurant itself was busy, since it was New Years Eve, but at 6:15PM it was more than manageable. Our table had the Lamb Chops and (2) New York Strips one with crab. One of the steaks was supposed to be well-done and instead it got to the table medium-rare at best (see posted picture). Why didn't I ask the waiter to return it? We had reservations for 6:15 pm, we were seated closer to 6 pm but were not served our main course until 7:45 pm and when it got to the table it was lukewarm. Such a disappointment! Worst feeling to wait a long time for your main course and have it be such a disaster. If your kitchen is so "backed-up" (according to your staff), so much that they are unable to cook a steak properly, then maybe management shouldn't be opening up extra seating. After 13 years of being a loyal patron and giving The Brickyard countless opportunities, it is safe to say that I have spent my last $200 plus dollars at this restaurant only to be served another disappointing, subpar experience. One of downtown's Boise's finest downtown restaurant's, The Brickyard was a solid overall experience, especially when combining a really good dinner with a fun piano bar on a weekend night. I would recommend obtaining reservations on a weekend, because it's not only a popular dining option, but getting a good table for both dinner and the piano bar in the main room makes for an enjoyable evening. My server, Cody, was really good, a nice combination of quality interpersonal skills, solid feel for his restaurant, and knew when to interact. I suggest ordering the tableside salad cart, as it is a fresh, versatile offering with personable servers. It's $9 well invested. I selected a petite filet mignon ($34) that was delicious, and also enjoyed a cup of potato soup that was sprinkled with bacon and so good. Loved the piano bar that begins at 10PM on weekends, as it was very entertaining and a fun sing-along experience. The three musicians were interactive and engaging. I'd suggest grabbing a dinner reservation from 8PM forward, and stick around for the music. It's not a cheap visit, more in the upper end of pricing, but overall a very good selection. read more

Ate here on a Friday night for our anniversary. Restaurant was crowded and we were seated at a table along the wall. Other tables blocked servers convenient access to our table and every time someone came over other diners had to move their chairs so a server could pass through. If I had been seated at one of those tables I definitely would have complained and felt bad for the lady being constantly bumped into by staff squeezing by. As a result the salad cart could not come to our table, which was disappointing and resulted in the server asking us what we wanted on our salad and then leaving to go prepare it. Once it was made and brought to us we found items we asked for were left off, but of course the person making the salads was gone. Our meal arrived and my steak was not cooked as requested and my husband's scalloped potatoes were so greasy he couldn't eat them. Unfortunately our server never came to check how our meal was and as a result we hardly ate any of our dinners. Someone came to clear our table and ask if we wanted a box. We still hadn't seen our server. At that point we requested the manager and let him know our meal was unacceptable and our server never came over so we could have it rectified. This was our second time at giving this restaurant another try as the first time we also had an issue. For a restaurant that is supposed to provide such great food and excellent service they fell far short twice. We've decided we won't return. read more

In my opinion this restaurant is a solid three stars- mostly based off the food. My husband and I visit Boise a lot from California. We always like to try new places when we come to Boise. This time we chose The Brickyard. The ambiance is a 10 out of 10 as this restaurant is very cozy, especially with the subtle live piano music. But when it comes to the food we were disappointed. The mixed drinks were not tasty at all. I ordered the house margarita and the Cosmo and they were both too sweet and didn't seem to be mixed well. I don't recommend the shrimp skewer appetizer because it comes with three, yes three small shrimp and a load of bland polenta. The onion soup is good, but the table side salad (what our waiter told us they are known for) was awful. A person comes to your table to make the salad on a cart in front of you. We chose what we wanted on our salad and he plated it for us. The salad tasted very un-fresh with and the dressing was meh. I think because the salad ingredients are on a cart they become less fresh. Also, we got a few sides of potato dishes to go with our steak; the peanut butter potatoes are surprisingly pretty good but the scalloped potatoes were cooked with a stinky cheese and tasted like they had been reheated in a microwave- very un-tasty. And lastly the most disappointing was the steak. We ordered a ribeye medium well. It came out red. They politely offered to cook it to our liking and it came back out correct, but it was such a tough piece of meat and did not virtually have any of that nice marbling on a ribeye. I even had to ask if that piece of meat was actually a ribeye steak. The staff was nice and the ambience was great but we have no desire to return due to the food. When my nephew said we were going to a place called "The Brickyard", I had no clue what to expect. In my mind, the 1st thing I thought of was a huge pile of bricks piled around a fire pit with a grate over the top of it. Little did I know that the Brickyard was one of those fancy places to eat. Like the Beverly Hillbillies. "Can we eat on the fancy eaten table tonight Pa?" For anyone that knows me, Im not fancy or pretentious person in any way. My idea of a fancy restaurant is someplace that does not throw peanuts shells on the floor. When I walked into the Brickyard, I was struck by Fancy. It was dinner time, so the lights were low and it had a romantic feeling. The live piano player added to this feeling, but it is not a real piano. Its electric, which is my opinion takes away from a genuine feel. I hate fake! My guess is during lunch, things don't look and feel quite as fancy. How fancy you ask? We recently watched an episode of "The Amazing Race." In the one we watched, the racers went to a very fancy place where royalty was served. They had to set out place settings in a very precise way. The plates had to be set up just "so so". The silver ware had to be set up just "so so". The guy that checked the placement after the contestants finished got out his ruler and measured everything to make sure it was precise. This is how it feels here. Precise I felt like a duck out of water. When I sat down, there was way too many pieces of silverware. I still don't know what they were all for. And for every course, they brought out more. When they brought out spoons, they laid them near the center of the table horizontal to the person that was going to use them. Yet another mystery of Fancy places that made my brain hurt. I guess I had better talk food. I had the New York Strip. It was very good but expensive. It has a smoked flavor, and it was very tender. I had to send it back because it was way to bloody for me. To their credit, it was probably a true Medium temp. Many restaurants tend to have their own variations on the right temps for meat. The mashed potatoes were light, fluffy and tasted buttery. Very good. When we left, they gave us their cobbler to go and some breakfast muffins. The cobbler looked terrible, like a duck relieved himself, so I did not try it. The breakfast muffins tasted like whoever baked them used way too much baking powder. For me, I would not go back here for dinner, because its way outside my budget plus I just don't like fancy. I do look forward to going here for lunch, which is served 11am to 2:45. I wont have to feel like I need to pretend to be fancy and I can try their burger and fries. read more

Husband has the duck, I had the elk tenderloin.... Both cooked well, without gamey-ness. Demi sauce very rich. Peanut butter mashed potatoes are a must have, chipotle makes a little kick and peanut butter is slight as the end. Side of mushrooms where so yummy.
