Love it!! It was my birthday, and a friend had heard about a speakeasy in town. We walked down the alley and voila a barbershop! There is a barber who asks for the password. Our friend had the password from last week, but he was nice enough to give us tips until we guessed the password. Won't tell you where the secret door is, but you walk in and the speakeasy is fantastic. Great drinks, great service, books everywhere. They read a limerick at closing. Awesome!!! read more

My partner and I were in Durango for the night in late October and we had such an amazing experience. Our server was dressed as the Goblin King for Halloween - which definitely added to the ambiance. The woman (I can't remember her name boo!) who made our drinks was knowledgeable not only about the alcohol she had available but also how it was made, sustainability relative to alcohol, what drinks we might enjoy - I can't recommend her enough. The menu has incredible variety, but I recommend telling them what you like and leaving yourself to their creativity. Wonderful ambiance with great service! This place is fun! A false facade of a barbershop and a bookstore turned prohibition style speakeasy. The cocktails are all themed or named after authors or classic pieces of literature. The doorman greets you inside the barbershop where you must provide a secrete password to gain entry. We failed on the password but schmoozed the doorman a bit to let us in. This place is amazing! I booked my husband a straight razor bald cut and face, and he loved it he was pampered and his barber was the best guy in there for the job! He took pride in his appearance and his craft, I really enjoyed watching my husband being taken care of so well. Not only did his head feel smooth and hydrated but so did his face. We are from houston and our skin is used to the high humidity so being up north really dries our skin out, but after his pampering he looked ten years younger we will alway come to see this barber when we are in Colorado I wish I could remember the barber's name that worked on my husband but I believe he's the only one who does straight razor cuts. read more

Best flat top in town (wife approved)! Went to see Pedro based on one other barber review to see if he could give me the best flat top in town - I wasn't disappointed. Great attitude and he approaches barbering as an art. He listened to what I wanted and went to work. Great atmosphere and good conversation. I stepped into the Bookcase speakeasy to get a beer before my hair cut - just give the password 'Bugs sent me' and Pedro opens the secret door that leads to the bar. Very cool to have customers stick their head in and provide the password to be let into the back room. Next time I will bring my wife so she can have a custom cocktail in the speakeasy while she waits on me. Folks, Pedro is a legit barber - great addition to Durango! You go in through a "secret" bookshelf door in the wall of the old barbershop. Super cool. I mean it when I said the drink quality was great. We visited last year while in Durango. I did not think I'd find a drink I'd like (as I don't seem to like anything). Boy, was I wrong! I LOVE the story drink that was recommended to me, the MariKoriKo (wife of Tiki). In fact, I liked it so much that I learned how to make it, had the exact ingredients surreptitiously flown into my town in Utah and we had it as our wedding toast drink for all of our guests last October. I had somebody suggest this place for a haircut & beard trim. It was cool to go in and have it be an actual barbershop & not part of some salon. The atmosphere was manly. "Gone in 60 Seconds" (w/ Angelina) was playing on Spike TV. I got a killer cut from Pedro. We're talking clippers, scissors, was, straight razor with shaving real shave cream, rinse, tonic, pomade - all for $25!! What??? 5 stars because Pedro listen to what I wanted and cut it exactly to my specs. we had to wait a bit to get in, as we waited, the guy at the door told some corny jokes, was super cool, and made the waiting fun. once we got in, the place was cool, the waiter was super nice and helpful and answered our questions, the drinks were incredible, INCREDIBLE, and strong. and delicious. price was great for what you get. i would recommend this place and i plan on going back if i'm ever in Durango again. it made our night. read more

This is not a place for an inexpensive, fast cocktail. It's a place to relax amidst great furniture and order fancy, less than cheap, creative cocktails. I had the Between the Sheets drink made ably and calmly by a dark haired guy. then he took the front bar and I got the bartender from Steven King. I asked her for a diet coke and bourbon since I needed caffeine. They don't carry diet coke or pepsi, just sweetened Mexican coke. Very belatedly, the server realized I wanted the caffeine when somehow she got the idea I didnt. Work on your listening skills, bartender. She still suggested a drink that had no caffeine. Then a bearded bartender had a great idea of bourbon and an espresso liquor (after I said I'll just take the check). While I was enjoying that drink, this mindless server talked endlessly and without interruption to a couple at her bar. Not only was it a spew of verbiage, but it was VERY loud. It was all about me, me, me - and inane topics like her two fav football teams. I felt harried, stressed, coudnt relax or think given her dominating voice. FOrget kicking back and enjoying the aura or high class theme. I felt like she should be working at the Grizzly Rose, a cowboy bar with loud music you have to yell over. I truly rushed finishing the drink, only to discover my only hope of getting the check was to interrupt her endless chatter - there was no break her her spew. AMAZING PLACE! I love to try to find different speakeasies in cities that I travel, and this one is by far my favorite one!!!! Not only do they have a legit barbershop in front, but they did such a great job with the authenticity of a real looking speak easy. The details in the menu, the shelves over the bar, the old door to the office, the wall decor etc...shows how much work the owner put into this place. Not only that, but the drink are out of this world!!! The best drink that I have ever had, is there and it's called the 'Hotter than Heidi Klum". Alright Yelp amigos, I cut my teeth with cocktails in one of the finest bars on the west coast, and that has led me to search out the bartenders that know Amaro from Vermouth, and the difference between spirits intimately. Bo and his staff have accomplished that, with a nod to the past that warms my boozy little heart. The speakeasy is a small, comfortable space that suggests the proprietor is more interested in providing for his customers then getting the crowds tipsy. Stopped there while visiting Durango on vacation. Very unique place....great service and even greater drinks!! The regular barber was on vacation during our visit and the gentleman covering was not as talkative as other reviewers had noted but once we provided the "code" and entered the bar room it was terrific. We both tried a few drinks on the menu including the evening's special which was delicious. Additionally, I am not a screwdriver lover but after talking to the owner (who gave us a very nice briefing on the history of the place and beverages while we were enjoying our drinks), we tried one of them. It is a game changer!!! They use fresh squeezed OJ, splash of soda and a specific vodka. I have never had anything like it. Please give this place a try, it is worth the stop. read more

After many visits to Durango, I finally found the time and the password to check this place out. It is a small bar so it is best to go with smaller groups to ensure you are allowed in as everyone must be seated. It is a cozy little place and for sure unique. The bartenders are very welcoming and knowledgeable when it comes to the drinks. The menu is pretty extensive when it comes to the cocktail creations they have, some of just fancy names for common drinks, but others are truly unique and delicious creations. The bar seats probably 25 people, there were only 2 people working, one making drinks and the other serving the tables. Since this type of place has some time-consuming cocktails when it comes to making them it can take a while to get a drink, we were there on a slow night, it would be nice to see another bartender to speed things up.Aside from the wait for drinks this place is hands down the best bar in Durango and a true gem when it comes to speakeasies. read more
