Why have I been walking past Alpina everytime I'm in Greenport?…read more Was it the dark atmosphere? Did I think I was getting just another American-German influenced restaurant with only brats and potato pancakes? Did I expect polka? The experience was actually slow and refined, without the white tablecloths. Alpina has German, Swiss, and slightly Northern Italian influenced cuisine, along with a selection of alcohols I was completely unfamiliar with... which made the experience feel full of new things. The most memorable food was actually one of the simplest. The chef prepared incredibly creamy, caramelized onions with a slight sauerkraut tang that was amazeballs. I told our waiter that I'd write him a love letter over it, and here I am! The pappardelle had shredded duck, cheese, and big, fun, chewy noodles that were satisfying to slurp. It just needed a dash of pepper to elevate it. The meat and cheese board included a few things I'd never tried before, and it was so good I was searching for a meat shop in Manhattan so we could buy them again. Portion sizes aren't huge for the price, but it was worth it to us. Don't be afraid of the dark entrance, the ligonberry on the menu, and ask the bartender about the connection between the giant copper gnome and penguin shaker gone rouge.

Our mixologist was clearly passionate about creating great cocktails. I could kick myself for not remembering to take photos. I hope to come back for the food. My turkey was cold and the coleslaw had no seasoning, just a lot of mayo. The bbq sauce had a weird, unpleasant taste. My kids chicken and fingers and French fries were fine. The kicker was that their 2 bathrooms were out of order. I wasn't aware of this until my 4 year old needed to go. After seeing the signs on the doors, I went up to the counter to ask if there was a working bathroom. He said "No. You can go across the street." What? There's a bar and a restaurant across the street. The restaurant was closed. The bar may have been open. In any event, Green Hill should have told us they didn't have a working bathroom and should probably have been closed until they were fixed. I believe that's a health code violation.

CAUTION: $5 extra if you want egg whites for any style eggs…read more The food was good, and my fiancé and I were actually considering coming back--until we got the check. We both ordered the BEC (bacon, egg, and cheese) sandwich, which comes with "farm eggs any style." I was the only one who requested egg whites, and they charged me an extra $5 for it. The sandwich is already $14, so I ended up paying $19...for what, exactly? On the receipt, they even crossed out "tortillas" and replaced it with "egg whites." When I asked the waitress about it, she just shrugged and said, "That's what it is," and mentioned I could speak to the manager. I was too annoyed to deal with that kind of dismissive attitude. After that experience, they've lost two future customers. Don't list "any style" eggs on your menu if you're going to sneak in a $5 upcharge for a simple substitution. Completely ridiculous.
