So we went to this terrific, warm pub, in an old historic row house, for their famous American Thanksgiving dinner. It reminded me of pubs in Scotland where reservations are highly recommended and service is a big part of the experience. Strange I'm Leading with that, as the food was terrific, but it was a standout, friendly, attentive with manager or owner maybe checking in as well. We overstayed our allotted 2 hours in the dining room but they were super nice about it and about 2.5 hours in let us know very politely that they needed it. We were done for a bit and just gabbing, not rushed. The special was Thanksgiving turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables, a little cranberry and a great cheese cake. Bc the menu was so good we got Irish nachos which were amazing...over potato chips. Great drink selection with about 8-10 local crafts. My boyfriend and I booked lunch for this year's Summerlicious. We were excited to try a new place and have a good meal. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by various staff members. Since it was a hot day, we picked a window seat inside. As this place is an old house converted into a restaurant, it had a cool vibe- we felt like we were invited to someone's home for a lovely meal. On the table, we noticed their regular menu, but not Summerlicious menu. Then we were informed by one of the staff members that it is only available on the weekdays. We were disappointed that we would not be able to have a Summerlicious lunch. Also, we were disappointed that this was not clearly communicated on the Summerlicious website (where one can see the menu of this restaurant) and on the reservation page of this restaurant. Despite this, we decided to stay and try their lunch menu. Each of us ordered eggs benny- I picked Sautéed Mushroom and Baby Spinach and my boyfriend chose Eggs Benjamin (Smoked Salmon). We enjoyed the hot and fresh benny with crispy potato hash, plus cool and refreshing fruits. We wished that there was a bit more filling inside the English muffins. Our server was friendly and attentive- she made sure to check-in on us a few times throughout our meal. She also brought extra napkins and refilled water just at the right time without us asking (awesome!) Moving forward, we would like the message (Summerlicious only available on the weekdays) to be clearly communicated for the potential customers. My friend and I had Thanksgiving dinner here and we were very pleased with our meal. From the moment we walked in, the staff were extremely polite and friendly, and they were able to accommodate us even though we didn't have a reservation. They were serving a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings, such as mashed potatoes, stuffing, roasted vegetables and cranberry sauce. Nothing overly fancy, but that's exactly what we wanted! So many restaurants try to "elevate" a roast dinner and it doesn't always work out. I absolutely love a traditional roast dinner, especially at Thanksgiving! They served a caramel pecan cheesecake for dessert that was exceptionally good. Very creamy texture and not overly sweet. I'm not usually a fan of cheesecake but this was delicious. This place is like a little oasis in the downtown core that is like going back in time. They even have a real fire place that they were willing to light up for us yesterday. I first started coming here when I was invited by a member of my law firm. Then, we started coming here regularly to have our Downtown Tory Association meetings. The staff are very professional and welcoming. The food is also outstanding. It's like a combination of Greek and Irish food items and many of the items are made in-house. Our only criticism would be the way they allow certain randos to walk in right off the street, (although this is common in the downtown). It happened right in the middle of the afternoon when most people like that would be either working or sleeping. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended for group event meeting. read more

This location is one of the old mansions on Jarvis converted into a lovely restaurant. The inside bar is a treat as it sits across from a large beautiful fireplace. In the summer they have a really great patio that is covered by the foliage a large tree growing on the patio provides. I came on a Saturday for brunch, not too busy. Easy to miss if you're just driving by, the Blake House really is a converted old house. Brunch is only available weekends, but the lunch menu is still offered. I ordered the Hazelnut Banana Pancakes, with added sausage (3 for $2), and my date ordered the Blake House burger. The Pancakes come with 3 pretty large pancakes, covered generously in Nutella, topped with a few banana slices. Didn't need to add any additional syrup. I liked how the edges of the pancakes were almost crispy. Quite a big portion for one person; a bit too much sweetness for me. The burger was very average. I liked how you can customize it, and it comes with a tray of mayo, mustard, relish for you to put yourself, but otherwise there wasn't much special about it. Disappointed. They have such great reviews on Yelp and Google but nothing I experienced was above average. I tried the cocktail hour springs rolls $7 for 3 cut in half. They weren't bad but the seasoning was a little different. Didn't taste like Asian spring rolls. The pastry was nice and flaky and the sauce was delicious. Thier lava calada was delicious. Strawberry puree and pinacolda yum! The chicken sliders were bland its supposed to come with mango slaw and only two had ONE slice of mango on them and the bread wasn't that soft. Decided to do a last minute Winterlicious night, we decided to try to call ahead to see if we could get a reservation. The person on the phone said there wasn't but to come and they would get us sorted. When we arrived it was pretty busy and we were given a choice between the bar table or wait for a table that was going to clear up in a couple minutes. As we didn't mind the bar table we headed there for our meal. We decided to get the salon and wild haddock fish cake and the traditional horiatiki Greek salad, Cabernet braised lamb shank and the vanilla cheesecake and baked toffee banana bread pudding. The food came quite fast, it was an ok portion for the appetizers. The fish cakes were good the jalapeño aioli had a big kick to it. The braised lamb shank was delicious with a great helping of mashed potatoes and beans. The dessert was delicious and highly recommend either one if you can't decide to try each! The restaurant was busy the entire time we were there but wasn't incredibly loud either at the bar. My one thing was that to check your receipt as the way the winterlicious $45 is spread out some items were lowered to add up to it but we were almost charged the normal price of the fish cakes which made the total not add up. One of the first patios I visited post-lockdown and I wasn't disappointed! I rarely visit Jarvis street but happened to walk past The Blake House when I was on my way back from getting my second dose. The patio was popping! Full of people dining, drinking, and just having fun with friends. I made a mental note to search this place up and 2 weeks later myself and 2 friends visited. The reservation process is very simple, they have a comprehensive online reservation system. When I visited indoor dining was not yet available so I booked for the gorgeous patio, so I'm unable to comment on the interior of the restaurant (for now...). I booked for a slightly gloomy day so it wasn't as busy, and the host kindly let me choose the table of my preference. After my friends showed up our waitress gave us our menus (a QR code for you to scan and view the menu on your phones) and promptly brought us drinks. We ordered the calamari, the chicken pot pie with side salad, and fish and chips. Everything was delicious, very simple but soo flavorful. They had a lot of menu items I wanted to try, but will save them for another day. I saw a beautiful baked Brie platter as it went by and I'd recommend you to order it just based on appearance alone. I've also heard excellent things about their burgers so I already know what I plan on getting my next visit. Because it wasn't busy we took our time dining and just catching up. Our waitress was amazing and so attentive and friendly. She recommended we try the sticky toffee pudding, which we did and I LOVED IT. Pairs perfectly with the round of after dinner coffees she brought out. It did start to drizzle a little near the end of dinner, but the patio is covered with huge umbrellas and overhangs so no rain got on us. Had it been a sunny day the umbrellas would also provide a lot of shade so it's definitely a patio you'd want to sit at. 5/5 stars for the amazing experience, I can't wait to visit again to try their other menu items that I've been eyeing. read more

My club sandwich had the usual lettuce, tomatoes, Gouda and grilled chicken. Chicken was not dry and there was quite a big piece in there so every bite was full! No soggy bread and over all, very nice sandwich! The burger was juicy and they remembered to keep the tomatoes out as requested. Funny story. Boyfriend has some of my sandwich and has to take the tomatoes out first. Natalie, the amazing server, comes by and goes ,"ohh was that tomato hiding in your burger!?" And instantly we explain it came from my dish. But I thought it was really sweet and wonderful how she recalled and wanted to make sure we liked our food. Natalie was amazing and so cheerful! And it's relatively quiet in spite of being so close to Yonge and Bloor. I got a table for myself outside. Had one of their local IPAs. East Coast style, nice and hoppy. My server (Jimmy?) was great. Friendly and attentive. I decided to get the steak sandwich. He asked me how I would like it cooked. Grabbed a few drinks here (late summer) and sat on the patio. Happy hour is until 6pm M-F - so get those orders in! $5-7 for pints and glasses of wine..what can go wrong? I didn't order any food, so I can't comment on quality - but they do have a snack menu that did look good. Next time for sure I'll order something to go along with my pint. The patio is nice and plenty of seating. The staff are super nice and honestly, you feel like you are sitting on the front porch of a really nice house. A really nice laid back chill vibe. I was extremely excited because this was my first Summerlicious. For appertisers, I got the fish tacos which tasted good and there were 2 of them. The excitement died quickly because although the salmon (which was my main) looked great, it was really overdone and I had to send it back. When they brought me another one, it was cooked well but the rub was salty to the point of being inedible. I had to cut the top part off to be able to eat my meal. I ordered the chocolate sundae for dessert because after an unappetising meal, I thought there was no way a chocolate dessert could go wrong. I was wrong. The only semblance of chocolate the sundae had was some chocolate syrup which tasted store bought. It was my fault for not reading the description of the "Chocolate Sundae" properly but I never imagined I'd have to look for the chocolate in a dessert which has "Chocolate" in it's name. Perhaps the restaurant can work on naming this dish to something more appropriate, like "Vanilla Sundae". The service was great, no complaints there. read more

Each year our Manager thanks our hard work by taking us out for a night of good times and dinner. We make reservations for 20 and have been doing so for over 6 years. Service is fun and friendly and it always amazes me how all our dinners arriveso we can enjoy eating together. We all order differently...some the steak others dishes like the ravioli. This year I enjoyed thier Cob Salad. Delicious!! Over the years I have had thier chicken pot pie...great! Thier Portabello burger...mmmmm, and also thier fish and chips...perfection. I came here for a UYE with some fellow Yelpers. I figured that since the place just opened we would give it a week before attempting. The evening that was planned happened to be their grand opening so the place was packed. We had wanted to sit on the patio but had to resort to sitting inside. On the patio they had an oyster bar set up. I'm guessing this was just for the grand opening as I didn't see anything on the menu about fresh oysters. The patio is quite large and probably holds a good 60 people. Inside, this old mansion has been restored to it's former glory and includes a wood burning fireplace and magnificent stained glass window. Hanging on the walls are old pictures of Jarvis street and the mansions that grace(d) the area. They have a very diverse drinks list that includes beers, mixed drinks, martinis, and more. They are also reasonably priced with most of the drinks at $5-6. I was quite pleased that they had Grasshopper on tap. The menu has a good depth and range of items and is accurately priced for the portions and quality. Most of the entrees range from $10 to $14 though there are a couple items that go as high as $18. The appetizers and soups range from $7 to $10. As I was sitting right outside the kitchen I saw many dishes pass by and they all looked scrumptious. The chicken wings look plump and saucy and the fish and chips look light and crispy. I debated starting with the poutine but decided to skip it in the end and just went with the signature burger; The Blake House. The burger is $10 and comes with pickle, tomato, lettuce, and fries. You can add extra condiments for $1 each like cheese and caramelized onions as I did. Unfortunately the burger was really disappointing. It was very average and the the caramelized onions were skimpy. If I'm paying a buck to have a condiment put on I would expect that there would be enough if it that I could taste it, or at least be able to tell that its on my burger. The highlight of the meal was the salad that I swapped for the fries. It was their house salad with mixed greens, red onion and a vinaigrette. Very well done. To finish the evening, my wife and I shared a creme brulee. For $6 I thought the portion size was a little small compared to Karl's sticky toffee pudding for the same price. However, the creme brulee was very delicious. The top was perfectly charred and the creaminess below was smooth and rich. For the most part I was very pleased with the staff. Upon walking in, a gentleman asked how many our group was and offered the two of us that had arrived a seat while they cleared a table for us. Our server was a little flustered for most the evening because of the grand opening which she apologized for near the end of our visit. Most of the staff are experienced as they followed the owners from the now closed Groundhog Pub at Bloor and Sherbourne to their new place of ownership. Overall this is a great place. As with any new place, even though its the same staff and owners as another pub, they have some kinks to work out. This may be my new regular watering hole. read more

Nothing better than good ol' comfort food during the cold winter. Even better when you get to sample a variety of items for Winterlicious. Came here with a group of 10 so we made reservations ahead of time. Service was fast and attentive. The food was pretty good too. I got the salmon off the Winterlicious menu which was seasoned and blackened perfectly but still remained juicy. The lamb shank option looked and smelled incredible. The meat was fall off the bone and it comes with a side of mashed potatoes. You can never go wrong with mashed potatoes. As for dessert, the carrot cake and creme brûlée are definitely my top choices. Their dessert err on the sweet side, but I'm a sugar fiend so I didn't mind. It's a nice rustic setting to get together with friends or to bring a date. Definitely check it out even if it isn't for Winterlicious. You can't go wrong with great food and atmosphere. read more

UPDATED REVIEW (9/12/2012): I came back here on Sunday and this place is seriously rad. I ordered the prime rib special for $17 (incl. mashed potatoes, vegetables and yorkshire pudding). The mashed potatoes were really good, and the prime rib was juicy and cooked to my liking. The yorkshire pudding was delicious, but I could have used some more gravy (dumb of me not to ask though). The portion sizes are perfect too. The service this time was incredible. The waiter was very attentive and friendly. The manager (I think) came over to chat a couple of times. I noticed he was doing it with a number of tables. The first time it was because he was clearing our plates and left the bread and butter basket. I mentioned how I really liked the butter which had dill in it. He said that the herbs were fresh from their herb garden, which I was delighted to hear. The second time he overheard me talking about a Greek restaurant. He asked me how I liked it (I didn't), and proceeded to tell me how important he thought fresh ingredients were and that they use all fresh ingredients, and told me about their Greek salad. Not only was that informative, and good to hear, I thought, this is a smart guy. He probably didn't even care about my opinion of the Greek restaurant I was talking about, but what a smart thing to do, seizing that moment to comment on his restaurant. Good job!
