We went for dinner on a Sunday evening. The restaurant wasn't super busy. Service was adequate and no complaints. We got seated promptly. The server took our food order at the appropriate time. The two favorite dishes: 1. Hakkebof Med Log - ground sirloin with grilled onions was juicy and flavorful. Cooked to the request of medium rare. 2. The Wienerschnitzel - the thin slice of meat was light and juicy. The scallion potatoes, red cabbage and cucumber salad added a nice burst of freshness to the expertly-cooked meats. Why not 5 star? The price is high: $16 for 4 potato skin; each entree $26-$31; bread for $4; and a 16oz. beer $12. The meal costs an arm and a leg. This is our only complaint. Understand that it is targeting tourists, but we are "local" Californians who go back to the same restaurant for good food when we visit the town again. read more

My family and I were visiting from Los Angeles, and we were really excited to try "authentic" Danish food. I'll cut to the chase - I was very disappointed. I can find better Danish food in LA, and the service was terrible. I think we just got unlucky with the waiter who was assigned our section, but it spoiled my experience there. There was a group of elderly Caucasian women who were seated after us but were served first. I'm pretty sure the waitstaff were being discriminatory against us because we were a group of 5 Asians, and I would not go back. My biggest regret is leaving a tip. read more

Had to really think on the stars to give this place. If I had to rate it on my first ever Monte Cristo Sando it would be a solid five stars. This is their signature sandwich, and it blew my tastebuds to tastebud heaven with a chorus of singing angels flapping their wings in ecstasy! Yeah, it was really that good. But...the service and wait times were an absolute one star. We arrived before they opened and walked in after they opened the door. We were greeted by a woman mopping the floors that didn't speak English and kept waiving us to different directions so that after a few minutes of confusion we just stood still. A gentleman then appeared and grabbed some menus and seated us in the outside area. We were the only people in the restaurant and it turned into about a two hour dining experience with the long wait for requested water, drink order taking, drink delivery, lunch order taking, lunch delivery, check request, check delivery. Upon finally exiting, we observed only one other occupied table in the large restaurant. Come on folks, you know your operating hours. The cleaning should be finished prior to opening. You cook staff should be set up and ready to fulfill food orders. Maybe we should have had a clue when we were the only diners in the place and service moved at a snails pace. I am happy that I got to finally taste a Monte Cristo, but I was very unhappy about wasting our precious vacation time waiting to receive it. Well, at least now its checked off my bucket list, so no need to aggravate myself to ever dine here again. (The calories in that one sandwich will take the rest of my lifetime to work off! The potatoes and vegetables were good but the lamb was tough and bland (I got it medium) and it had a mint sauce that was good. I wish the meat itself had some flavor and wasn't as tough. The Med Log came with mashed potatoes and cabbage. The mashed potatoes were good and cabbage was OK but the meat (ground beef) was bland. We had heard some chatter about The Bit O'Denmark being a sucker-touristy place, but when we came in there was hardly anyone there. It was early dinner time, so we decided to 'beat the crowd' and give it a try. The wait was noticeably long, given the obvious number of empty tables, it took a good long while to take our order as well as deliver the food. Scandanavian food typically includes marinated meat and vegetables. I wanted to try something authentic, so the name "Hakkebof Med Log" under the "Danish Entrees" section (versus the "Entrees" section), seemed like a good choice - pure ground sirloin with grilled onions, topped with a fried egg and brown sauce. Eerily familiar to Loco Moco, except served with the requisite sour red cabbage, cucumber salad (also sour), and roasted potatoes. Meat was yummy - maybe a slight overdone, but well seasoned. Whatever 'brown sauce' I tasted was minimal, and the over easy egg was just about right. It's hard to ignore the enormous pile of sour red cabbage - I did respectfully and adventurously try a few bites, but just couldn't finish. I wonder how much pickled red cabbage they have to throw away every night. Potatoes were incredibly dry and plain. At $27.00 a plate, this was a steep price. If given the opportunity, I wouldn't mind trying another Danish item: the house favorite, Flaeskesteg (roast pork), or Frikadeller (pan fried meatballs) both sound good. This was a bit o' Denmark that I could have lived without trying. Yes, I get it, Solvang is for tourists and you can't expect every restaurant to serve the best version of whatever Danish dish you're hoping to try on this vacation, but I don't know, I guess I just expected more from this open face pork sandwich. However, as I recall being led back to their *outdoor* seating area, which was really just a porch with two screened sides, and seated near a giant grim reaper-type mannequin (I guess because it was early October?), I am questioning if I should have expected more. Being the only party seated "outdoors," despite it being during a time where I'm pretty sure California didn't allow indoor dining, our service was already lackluster and left a lot to be desired. Our server likely forgot about us on more than one occasion, and both items took unreasonably long to be served to us. ESPECIALLY because one item was just some meat thrown on a single piece of bread... ...which happened to be stale. The pork itself wasn't bad, though a bit dry, and the cabbage and potato salad were average. I would have loved to have helped my sandwich make its way down my esophagus with the appropriate amount of water for a meal, but alas, the glasses here are small and our server was rarely seen. Would I recommend this place? Perhaps if eating indoors was safe and one of their other items was more satisfying. It's possible. Bit O'Denmark is a traditional Danish restaurant in Solvang. This restaurant used to be a smorgasbord, but is now full service. My party sat in the back patio area with our dog, which was perfect on a sunny day. Our server was attentive and helpful. We ordered the Charcuterie board and the Herring for our appetizers. The Charcuterie board came with a variety of artisan cheese, some meat, walnuts, olives, and some crackers (I felt that there were not enough crackers). I noticed that the ingredients used for this board can also be purchased from the nearby cheese and wine shop. The Danish Herring had 3 different sauces: pickled, curry, & Madeira wine; the order came with 5 slices of pumpernickel bread. My favorite out of the three sauces was the curry. We asked for more bread and were provided with a basket of free sourdough bread slices and butter packets. I ordered the Combination Plate which came with frikadeller (pan fried Danish Pork meatballs & brown sauce), Danish sausage, and mashed potatoes. I recommend this dish as it was super savory and filling! The meatball and sausage were juicy and flavorful. Overall, this is a decent restaurant if you are curious about Danish food and happen to be in the area. A great place for first timers or for those who haven't been to Solvang in a while. Went with family to try an authentic Danish dinner. The exterior is as one would expect in a Danish style building in Solvang. The interior was very nice and comfortable, and the air conditioning was running on Theis warm June day. They did have high chairs for our little one in the group, however they allowed us to use our stroller as the height accommodated better for the table. We initially ordered drinks. Two ordered virgin Paloma margaritas and I ordered a double Buffalo Trace in the rocks. I was told the virg margs was very tasty. I can vouch for the good pour on ice with a double bourbon. Very nice. The food was very good. It all tasted hot and fresh. The majority of the plates came with red cabbage, pickles and mashed potatoes with silky and rich brown gravy. Complimentary Bread and butter was also provided with the meal. As for the meats, we all had the weinerschnitzel, sausage, Swedish meatball, and ground sirloin with egg on top. We also had a red pepper chicken pasta. I was totally happy with all these flavors. I have been interested in trying this type of food and I can't wait to try different restaurants of this type. The only negative experience would be that only one of the potato skins had a hair in it. We told our server who did replace with a fresh order in a timely manner and did not even charge us for that. The server was sincerely apologetic and took care of the issue in a professional manner. All in all, a great place to eat good danish style food. They also have other American style food. Very slow to get order in, no follow up on how we were doing, which is a missed opt to sell me another beer. my sister in law ordered an onion soup and it was not delivered, so we needed it removed from the bill. We decided to stop in for dinner to The Bit O' Denmark randomly because we were really hungry and saw great reviews for this place. Although this place was busy, we were able to grab a table. The place is kind of small with not too many tables, but it is very quaint and homey. We sat in the dining area closest to the small bar that they have, which serves beer, wine, and other adult beverages. Service was great- our server was attentive and friendly. We went to two restaurants in Solvang on the same night, and this was definitely the better choice the other place we had a meatball and sausage, and here we decided to opt for roasted pork, stuffed with prunes and it did not disappoint. The cabbage and the pickled cucumber was better here, and it also came with some applesauce, and gave you a choice of them, gave you a choice of different kinds of potatoes. We checked couple places before came here and turned out to be the best descision. It was a friday night and surprisingly the place was empty. Well not too long after we sat down at the back patio, slowly started to fill up, but it was still quiet with a nice lounge music and the sounds of the fountain on the wall. The menu has just enough scandinavian food options, where everyone could find something good. Since I was craving cheese, the charchuterie board was my choice and my friend picked the Fiske fillet (breaded fried cod) with potato salad and pickled beets. My charchuterie board wad the BEST I ever had! It had 8! big pieces of unique cheeses (our server told us, the owner has a cheese shop across the restaurant- The Vinhus, a must go!-, so their cheeses are always different on the board), mortadella, salami, blackberries and grapes, honey glazed walnuts, green olives, 2 kinds of crackers and fresh warm bread. My favorite cheese was the levander gouda and the green sage ( you can see it on the picture). As a drink, I choosed a watermelon mojito and my friend got a glass of moscato and another riesling ( Firehouse) and he said, both were very refreshing.They are also available at the cheese store across the street. We were very happy with everything, the servers were super helpful to answer all of our questions about the cheeses, and the prices are unbeatable as well. We were in Solvang for a couple of days and wanted to try some of Danish food. The reviews for Bit of Denmark looked pretty good so we thought we would try it. I called several times to make a reservation but the line was busy each time. The restaurant was not to far so we decided to walk over and take our chances with getting a table. We were greeted when we came into the restaurant. Our wait for a table was supposed to be 30 minutes. After just 10 to 15 we were escorted to a table. All the serving staff were excellent. I ordered the Weinerschnitzel and my wife had the Frikadeller (pan fried Danish meatballs). My weinerschnitzel was outstanding. It was tender and the breading was perfect. The red cabbage, mashed potatoes and cucumber salad that accompanied my meal were excellent. My wife really enjoyed her meal too. The restaurant was very clean. The Danish decor created a nice, relaxing atmosphere. The service was a bit slow but it was enjoyable to have a leisurely meal. If you are in Solvang, I recommend The Bit O'Denmark. read more

As others have said, service was super slow even though it wasn't crowded on a Saturday night. They got every order wrong: asked for seafood linguine without scallops but it had scallops; they brought wrong order instead of steak, and tried to force us to believe we ordered the dish they brought. Guy just stood there for 15 minutes asking as if we wanted the dish, arguing it would take 15-20 minutes for the right dish to come out....so we should accept the wrong dish? So I said, are you gonna comp our dish for being late? Owner comes out with a horrible attitude saying do we want the dish or not, that she's not going to comp anything. So I ask what are you going to do to make it right? My mother in law now has to eat her food alone after everyone else is done. She asks 'What do you want?' in this horrible condescending attitude. I already told her what I wanted and she denied it. So what am I supposed to say? I'm surprised with an owner like that, Susie Sorenson, this place is still in business. My second visit. Host said 30 minutes, only waited 15 in bar. We had lamb rib roast and Wiener schnitzel. Rib roast was perfectly cooked, portion was pretty small. Potato's were very good with a simple seasoning and the veggies were cooked how I like them. The Wiener schnitzel was fantastic. Big portion, breaded with capers and anchovies on top.
