This place is sure full of itself. Angry Hour...can of whoop-ass... "Don't eat the burgers with a fork and knife, you Euros." But, you kinda have to. I mean, who makes a burger and then puts it on an English muffin?!? The bun was so tiny and the burger was drenched in sauce that the bun was a wet mess. And BBQ sauce that was not. A nice tasting sauce but definitely not BBQ. Maybe that is what NYers think BBQ sauce is. (oh, snap! Is the boy from Cali starting an East Coast/West Coast throw-down) A medium grilled patty is not well-done on the outside and raw on the inside. The fries were good and the hot wings were hot! This is a very attractive restaurant in a convenient location with a really friendly staff. The portions are huge! So i ordered the turkey club which was really delicious with a great turkey, crisp bacon and nice tomato. We also got "da birdhouse" burger which was huge! Two juicy patties with american cheese and a mountain of fries. The english muffin it is served on is a surprise but worked really well and stood up to the enormous burger and toppings. The fries were a mix of skinny steak fries and wedges which meant that some were soggy and some were over cooked. As a bonus the pickles were dill and not sweet! read more

Food poisoning. I went there yesterday, September 6th at 5pm and had called in my order 20mins before arriving in hopes it would be complete. We ended up waiting an additional 30 mins. I ordered a medium rare Bird House (mine) along with some mild wings and 2 other Bird houses (medium). I ate the burger and some hours later was throwing up, aches, pains, dizziness. Hands down the best burger I've EVER eaten. I ordered 'Da Birdhouse' for a very reasonable €12.50 when you consider the huge portion size. My double burger patty came served in an English muffin dripping with cheese and a mountain of skinned fries and I mean a mountain. I had mine medium which is recommended and the meat was tender, juicy and flavoursome and I don't know what they put in the cheese but it's terrific. I demolished my burger with my hands (the quirkily written menu insists you at least try) and ate my side salad but sadly couldn't get through all the chips, though I really did try. Staff are so friendly and give great service even though it's packed. The decor is nice with wooden benches, tables and a bar. The only downsides were the wait (which was 50 minutes), however it was a very busy lunchtime and the toilets, which weren't great and the smell from the men's hits you as soon as you go down the stairs. That's the only reason I'm giving 4 stars in stead of five. I would highly recommend this place to any burger or steak loving individual! They also have vegetarian options but only two. If I'm ever in Berlin again I am definitely coming back for a repeat performance! read more

Why have I waited so long to review this place? Maybe it's taken me a while to come down from the pure adrenaline rush of the food and surroundings and the awesomeness of Berlin itself! We were determined to try this place on the recommendation of Emma-Lou (amongst others) and so we dutifully arrived on the first night of our weekend break to a packed out venue and a 3 hour wait ... we dejectedly left, after booking a table for the following night. Luckily we found the Prater Garden which boosted our spirits and satiated our meat cravings for 24 hours. Friday night arrived and with an air of excitement we turned up as the doors opened, to be seated and warmly welcomed by the fabulous staff. The Bird is a loud, bright and cool place to be. A large bar dominates the room, Americana covers the walls and a blackboard with quirky doodles and descriptions explains the cuts of steaks and highlights specials. The menu makes for fun reading too! After much deliberation, we chose our meal. Da Birdhouse burger for myself and The Bronx Bomb for Mr Z, and a couple of beers to temper the heat from the Napalm Wings we just had to try. A word of warning, the wings are ridiculous. If you have an aversion to chilli or are a even a bit of a spice wuss, do not, I repeat, DO NOT order the wings. Now I like chilli. In fact I love chilli. As far as I am concerned, chilli should be a food group and a mandatory part of your five-a-day. Sriracha is pretty much a staple part of most of my diet and I have grown up on super fiery curries. Napalm Wings are truly evil. Thank whatever deity you wish that we had the sauce on the side because my tongue felt like Homer's in the Simpsons chilli contest episode with the merest hint of sauce that I tentatively dipped my wing into. The chicken alone was succulent and crispy skinned, and quite spicy enough for even the most hardened chilli freak to enjoy. After downing a good swig of beer, I continued undaunted into the flaming pits of hell as the stupidly hot but so insatiably delicious habernero-based yellow puddle consumed my ability to think. The addition to the plate of carrot sticks and blue cheese dip were a welcome break from the inferno that just kept on coming in waves of painful bliss! After a mouth calming delay, our burgers arrived. The descriptions from the menu are as follows ... "The Kitchen at The Bird does not have a can opener or a microwave. How do we open up cans and heat stuff up then you might ask? The answer is that we don't cook things out of tins or heat stuff up, we cook it all fresh. All burgers are made from 250+ grams of premium German beef. In other dumps it would be a steak, here it goes through our grinder every couple of hours to become the best burger in Berlin. Grilled to order and served with our fresh hand-cut fries, lettuce, tomato and pickle. Da Birdhouse - Our house burger has two patties, American cheese, bacon, fried onion, ketchup, mustard, pickles and enough grease to kill a donkey. The Bronx Bomb - Buffalo mozzarella and marinara sauce. " I can't really elaborate on that. Ouch, literally. I was really excited to try this place, I Read the bad reviews on google and figured those folks needed to just loosen up and enjoy some good American food. But ouch, it's been two days and both my husband and I are hurting. My stomach had been messed up for the past 48 hours and shows no signs of getting "normal" again. The steak came out looking delicious, but SERIOUSLY not 35€ euro delicious. I got the hamburger and it was grease bomb in a muffin. Really, a muffin, an English muffin. The waitress explained the owners couldn't find a bun that would hold up. I see why, it was loose undercooked meat held together with some slimy cheese topped off with an english muffin. Just imagine eating 250 grams of greasy loose ground beef in an English muffin, gross! I love to eat greasy messy American food but I would not reccomend The Bird in Berlin! It is really unfortunate that The Bird does not exist in London. Or maybe it is fortunate that it does not exist in London because I'd eat there every day and gain a bazillion pounds. I must admit that I'm not a huge burger lover - I consume about one a year but The Bird is known for its burgers, so I had to go for it and I'm glad I did. The burger and pickle (another thing you can't really get in London, or at least one that tastes good) were delicious. The fries were undercooked and this saddened me but at the same time I was happy because had they been cooked properly, I would have devoured the entire plate. With my burger and fries, I chose to drink bloody marys (yet another thing you can't find in London, or at least one that tastes good). I would consider myself somewhat of a bloody mary snob and while I haven't been back to the US in over a year (where the best bloody marys exist), I have to say that I quite enjoyed the bloody marys (3) that I had at The Bird. They were unlike any bloody mary I have ever had. The liquid was thin but not because it had too much vodka. I mean, it had vodka but the juice was thin versus the thick consistency you get with tomato juice. This tells me that the bartender must have done some magical stuff to the bloody mary to get it to be so thin. It was spicy and tasty. Would I rate it in my Top 5 or even Top 10 bloody mary of all time, no but it's been a long time since I've had a quality bloody mary and this one fits the bill. American expats, rejoice! We absolutely loved this place. SUCH a great vibe, awesome music, great service and um....DELICIOUS burgers. They serve it on an English muffin (toastie), which I had never had before, but proved to be genius because is soaks up all the juiciness of the burger without getting soggy. In fact, when we make burgers at home (Munich), we use English muffins now since burger buns are hard to come by and are usually not that great. This is my first time ever writing a review for a restaurant, and it may be the only, but it is worth it if I can get people to shut up about this being the best in Berlin. I've lived in Berlin for 6 years, lived around the corner from The Bird for 2 years, and went there for the first time the other day to finally try out 'the best burger in Berlin'. Honestly, it was very, very disappointing. I had 'da birdhouse' burger, which seems to be their 'house burger'. No doubt, the quality of the meat was very good, and it was cooked really really well. But to have two huge patties of it, inside the tiniest English muffin bun just ended up being annoying to eat. Everything just kept falling apart, and I would find myself just having to scramble to get anything into my mouth. I think the worst part of the whole thing for me was the cheese. It says, 'american cheese' on the menu. I did not know that meant they would literally put a cold slice of american Kraft processed cheese onto the meat right before being served. I seriously love cheesy, bacony jalapeño-y burgers but this one would've been better without it, such was the plastic and horrible taste of the cheese. And really, if you're going to put that cheese, can't you at least cook the meat with it so it MELTS? It was super terrible. All in all, it's not a baaaad burger, but it is 100% not worth paying 13 euros for. I would at least have expected some proper cheese for that kind of money. With extra jalapeños (which were really dry and weird) and the napalm sauce which was 'liquified habanero' as someone earlier put, the price of my burger and fries came up at around 16 euros. No. I will never return and I will be taking less than half of that money to burgermeister where I can actually get the best burger in Berlin. Great burgers! Make a reservation to make sure you get a table. I ordered The Filthy Harry (bacon and cheddar) without the bun but they got it wrong and it was served without bacon. Instead of having fries they offered me Caesar salad which was very nice. I would recommend going for medium instead of medium-rare if you are sensitive to red meat. We decided to try these mythical american burgers in our weekend trip to Berlin even if it meant a 18 € cab ride from the west side of town over to the east side where The Bird is located. The thought of a juicy and greasy burger was even more appealing since we had been out drinking the wonderful german beer the night before.....ha ha. Anyway.......We arrived at 1 pm on a saturday wich is 1 hour after opening. The complete inner sitting area was full and all tables on the outside accept one that we quickly sat down at. The peachy waitress came and took our order wich was 6 beers (2 each) and a burger and fries each. My thought was that we could have one beer while waiting on the food and another one when the burgers arrived since ive read that the burgers could be a grueling 45 min away if you are unlucky. Not this day though! After a sip and a half on the cold beer my burger named "Da Birdhouse" with double pattys grilled medium (it almost came out mooing at me) with bacon, cheddar cheese, ketchup, lettuce, tomato and mustard. Large mayo bottle on the tables for those who want that on the burger. Burger tasted awesome! I must say that this is one of the top 3 or so burgers i have had outside the U.S and ive had a lot! The patty where real juicy and packed with flavor and came together like a masterpiece with the salty bacon and creamy cheddar. Yummy in my tummy.....! The homemade english muffin burger bread was a liiiiitle on the small side but i had no problem eating it with my hands anyway. I give them an A for effort since most burgerplaces has the prefabricated supermarket buns we all have learned to hate. Fries felt tripplefried and they where as crispy as they come. Whatever you do, do not get the napalm wings, because by wing #3 you may experience pulmonary hypertension-- always go for the normal spicy option. Anyway, their burgers here are the best-- they have a great selection and their meals are huge so you won't go hungry. This was the first of 3 burgers I had in 5 days in Berlin (fatty I know). It was a good burger, not great. The portion of chips was huge, I genuinely struggled with this meal which is really saying something. I left very full as I ended up helping Emily with hers...(again fatty I know) The place itself is very cool. Had some good music on, a great atmosphere and nice chatty staff. If I lived in Berlin I would probably go here regularly, treat it like I treat the beagle in Chorlton. I was craving American food. I've been in Berlin for more than a month, and I was getting tired of eating Doner and currywurst. A quick Google search and I was off to The Bird! So when I was here, I ordered a Russen (a drink I never ordered before). The bartender warned me it tasted pretty badly, but I insisted. After I took a sip of it, I gagged. When he came up to check on me, I agreed that I should have listened. He said "I told ya so!" and smiled. I think he was being rude, but he was just joking. He offered to take it back and give me a good ol' Pils - at no extra charge. What a guy! The Burger is exactly why America is so great: it is big, greasy, full of toppings, and comes with a gigantic portion of fries. The ketchup is American ketchup, which is a giant plus. I got the original burger, and it was just awesomely delicious - especially as I washed it down with my russe... err, I meant Pilsener :) The Bird is real good, not just Berlin good for American food, but good good. The Worst !! I was a client of the Bird for many Years ..unti i got a food poisoning. For the first ( and last time ) i ordered the "chili cheese fries". After more or less two hours i had the worst time of my life, i needed a doctor. The diagnosis was: Food poisoning. No doubt it was the bird. Finally went there after spending many years hearing from friends and colleagues about how awesome the food is at The Bird. It's definitely over the top for meat lovers, nothing extraordinary actually but it's not so common to find such a tasty meat in Berlin. The service is also fine and seems largely inspired from the Hard Rock café processes. Now there's a little problem with seating and the capacity of this place. I don't mind having strangers seating really REALLY (touching) close from me in this town but that's an issue when I'm charged 11,50€ for a burger and fries. The forks and knives are optional and while I agree that it's not useful to eat a burger, it comes handy to enjoy those delicious fries and sauces. Some sanitised hand towels would be nice as well, the provided paper tissue is a disgrace. Burgermeister does this right, we're not in the Massachusetts after all. I disliked the pressure from the nice and lovely waiters to order drink and food ( 1 minute after seating), or trying twice to clear up our spot while we were not done yet with our food. All in all this place would be a 5 stars rating if prices were 25 percent cheaper but we've got charged 40Euros for two which is nothing in many cities but way too much in Berlin. Let me tell you a secret. I don't like burgers. In the US everyone tried to get me into it and I was just meh. Maybe it's because I like gobbling down my food like some savage, and a burger is just gone with a couple bites, no matter how condensed those are, so I'm not really forced to enjoy it. So when my new boss - who eats for two, but no vegetables, and spicier than anyone I encountered in Thailand, India or China - invited the team there, I was skeptical. I ended up liking it. And the napalm sauce he ordered was just... What. My mouth went numb and I started drooling. That should be illegal. I was a bit skeptical to try this place being from New York, and they describe themselves as a New York style bar, but I came here anyway based off a friends recommendation. I was happily surprised to find a good selection of burgers with fun names. I ordered the BBQ burger and it was a bit too greasy, but overall it was pretty good! I have to commend them on changing it up by using English muffins as buns because it actually works! I do say though, I would pass on the fries if you come here because they were pretty soggy. When you read blog posts or online reviews about The Bird, you can easily get confused as there is a 60/40 mixture between "best burger in town" and "I fucking hate this place". Let`s find out to which group we belong. The Ghetto Deluxe consists of 250+ grams (!) of premium German beef, American cheese, fried onions and an English breakfast muffin. On top of that you have some red onion, lettuce, tomato and pickle on the side, which you can add to your burger if you feel like. The huge patty is undoubtedly one of the best in Berlin, the taste is delicious and it`s prepared in a perfect way: very crispy on the outside and almost raw in the middle, a dream for every meat lover. Or as the restaurant describes it in their menu, "in other dumps it would be a steak, here it goes through our grinder every couple of hours to become the best burger in Berlin". The cheese is melted really nicely and the onions are the best and most intense I ever had on a burger. In fact the entire composition is so juicy and flavourful, that you don`t need any sauce at all and just want to enjoy it as it is. After having finished our chorus of praise, we still need to talk about the bun. Even though I know The Bird`s opinion on the topic and recently read on the fanpage, that they "are too busy making quality burgers to worry about making bread", I would still love to get this served in a proper bun. The place is a bar - the beer is good (as it is most places in Germany), with brick walls and Jimi Hendrix playing in the background. Our waiter was a character (with more ink than I thought possible on human skin). My friends ordered steaks - the filet is the thing to order, medium rare but seared really well. You could cut the steak with a butter knife (they provide serious knives for the job though). At 40+ euros per steak, this is a pricy place, but the steak is delicious. I ordered the breakfast burger - about a half pound of meaty goodness, freshly ground, cooked to a perfect medium rare, and topped with a perfectly fried egg. The burger was about twice as large as the english muffin that it was sitting on. No, there was nothing I would change about this night. They'll be insulted there's only one vegetarian burger, it has a name that insults the person eating it and somehow costs more than all the supposedly 'prime beef' burgers they sell. I went to the bird while visiting a friend who was in Berlin on a student exchange. It came recommended through some of his friends at the university as one the place where they have had if not the best, one of the bests burgers of their life. We sent an e-mail 2 days in advanced asking for a table at 10 pm, and we where told that only 10.30 was available, so if you want to go here and choose the time, you better book well in advance. From the outside, the place looks like a pub. Upon entering, you'll be greeted in English, which all the workers there speak perfectly. My two friends and I had the house's special : The Birdhouse. A big, 250 g double patty burger topped with cheese, caramelized onion and bacon, alongside a generous order of fries, a slice of tomato, a slice of raw onion and half a pickle. I ordered the hamburger rare, and they cooked it exactly as I expected. I have to say it may be the best burger I've ever had. Juicy, well cooked and tasty. Regarding the buns, you may have read in other reviews that that is, in fact, the worst part of the burger. I agree, the bread could be better, but by using this type of buns, you can finish your burger without it falling apart in the process. The fries were good to, but not as good as the burger. About the price, we had a 0,5L beer (3.5€) and the birdhouse (11.5€), so it all came up to 15€ plus tips. It may be expensive for a burger, and it may be expensive for the average Berlin price range, but in my opinion, it's money well spent. I'll definitely come back when I return to Berlin. read more

The Bird was an easy 15 minute walk away from where we stayed in Berlin. You won't want to walk for 15 minutes after eating here - but you probably need to. Expect big, belly-stretching burgers and plenty of beer if you go here. We rolled up shortly after 8 on a Saturday night. We seem to have a bad habit of doing this at busy restaurants, but perhaps due to our lucky streak and demonstrable greediness we always get seated relatively quickly. At The Bird we got a round in, sat outside for about 10 minutes and then got seats at the bar. This was a surprisingly good vantage point for inspecting the decor and chatting with the bar staff. I kept thinking that I would have loved this place in my angsty teen years - all skater style and fuck you attitude with heavy music and amusingly passive aggressive notes in the menu. And the food. We got mild chicken wings which were as tasty as you would want chicken wings to be, and came with a delicious chunky blue cheese dip. I had Da Birdhouse and Rich had the BBQ burger. Honestly, mine was a bit of a mess and started actually falling to pieces the minute I got my mitts round it. It was still a really good plate of food though, with masses of chips and a fairly fresh afterthought of a salad garnish. Rich, when quizzed, said his was 'pretty damn tasty'. Service was good in a chatty, friendly, casual way. I think it may have been a little overpriced after eating much cheaper meals in Berlin, but it didn't break the bank. If I'm back in Berlin at any point I'd definitely consider a visit. read more
