Where to start on this one? I don't give out 1 stars frequently but this was horrendous from start to finish. Here is a timeline instead, then the food review: 6:20PM Arrival 6:30PM Reservation time 6:45PM Seated, no menu on hand 6:55PM Got a menu 7:05PM Ordered a soup and a steak 7:30PM Soup is served (25 minutes to serve a soup?!) 7:50PM Steak finally served (almost 1 hour since I ordered) 8:10PM Asked for check 8:25PM Got the check (15 minutes to get a check...) **See below for actual food review** 1. French Onion Soup - DO NOT GET THIS!!! Thankfully did not get me sick but tasted like straight chicken noodle soup, literally 2 strands of onion inside and a foul cheese on top. Absolutely disgusting to even call this French Onion Soup. 2. Ribeye - Ordered medium, came medium rare. Tasted like raw meat with no seasoning. About 1 inch thick. Overall, I would have saved my 2 hours if I could turn back time and go eat McDonalds. This is definitely a 1 star steak house with bad service and food. read more

It's no Ruth Chris or Morton's but by golly it's pretty decent "American" fare. I'd say it's like a Black Angus or Ruby Tuesday, an upscale coffee shop which features steaks, served with a house salad, baked potato with their "house" sour cream and a hunk of garlic bread. The American dressing for the salad was more like 1000 island, while the French was more like Ranch dressing. Go figure. I had the rib eye and my server thought I said Well instead of Rare. No biggie, it got sent back and came back perfectly cooked, piping hot!! The steak was tender but a tad salty from their seasoning. I devoured it anyway. Stephen had the special prime and it looked as tender as it tasted. He finished his meal as well. Quite honestly I can't find fault with our meal. My steak was €20,50 which is no different than what I pay in SoCal. I did sub the sour cream for the herb butter, and was glad I did. The German sour cream is thick, and not as creamy as the US version. I would recommend this place and would come back too. read more

There are several of these places scattered around Berlin, which had me scared off at first. I didn't want to dine at the Applebees of Germany. I prefer something local. It is hard to avoid the smokey meat smell of the place, which is a good thing. The ribeye special was perfect for what we were looking for... salad, bread, steak, and beer. It wasn't over the top great, but the food was pretty darn good. Tip: When walking around the Berlin TV Tower, there aren't too many options open throughout the day. In the US I would call this restaurant a "jack of all trades". It is a beef restaurant with nice French and American cuisine. Even vegetarians can be satisfied. -Location: nice view of the Alexanderplatz antenna -Decor: simple but quite nice -Service: very attentive waiters and management -Flavors: we had a rump-steak (with baked potato and garden salad), a cheeseburger and a bruschetta. Skip it. If you are an American, definitely skip it. I ordered a NY cheeseburger. I've been to NY and I can tell you that no place in NY serves a burger open face on French bread. The French fries were hot but were skinny little shoestring fries. Finally, the coleslaw. A serving of coleslaw is bigger than a tablespoon. Overall I was very disappointed. I came there hungry and not with great expectations. The mark was set low and The Block House did nothing to raise it. Finally, I have been living in Germany for 3 years. I am familiar with how tipping is done here. My German sucks and I'm just not comfortable enough to order everything in German. Plus it's just easier for me to speak English. Twice I have had servers "remind" me by hand writing that the tip is not included or that tip is 10%. For the Americans out there please understand that there is no standard 10 or 15% tip in Europe. The custom here is to round the bill up to the nearest €5 amount. Don't let servers here guilt you into more. They get paid better than servers in the US and tips are not expected or counted towards their wages. read more

This was the first restaurant my fiance and I went to in Germany and it made us hold our standards high. It was nice that they had the menu in three different languages. The food was outstanding. I had the filet and it was so tender and juicy. BEST POTATO I EVER HAD. Their sour cream is to die for and nobody has sour cream like that here in the states so it's quite disappointing. Even down to the garlic bread it was amazing. We stayed in Germany for 4 days and we ate here twice because it was that good. read more

Not bad except for the steaks. No kidding. Caesar Salad A Baked Potato A Garlic Bread A Steak D The salad was so good that we returned twice and just avoided the steaks, and we were quite happy. Same with the spud. Perhaps an A+. Garlic bread was very good. The meat was not horrible, just average and over priced / over hyped. One end of this steak could not be digested no matter how long anyone chewed on it, it had to be spit out. By any objective measure, if you can't chew through... it is not a good piece of meat. On the plus side, service is some of the best in Germany. So, odd as it sounds, avoid the steaks here and you'll be fine. read more

German Chain restaurant. We stopped in as kids where hungry and cold. Overpriced, small portions, service "ok" and it was a slow night during the week!! My water glass had a big crack in it!! I had to return it for a new one and still got charged. The meat was ok but hmmm...perhaps there was a reason it was drowned in creamy white sauce with a ton if mushrooms. Came here on a very busy Saturday night. Wasn't sure if we were going to be sat but they made sure to sit us down immediately. I would recommend to make a reservation if you don't like to wait long. The service is excellent. They were super friendly and helped accommodate us. We ordered a Mrs Rumpsteak and a Filet Mignon with a baked potato. The steaks were cooked to perfection and very juicy. The baked potato and their sour cream was delicious. As for dessert we each got a cheesecake. One with the blueberry sauce and the other with a vanilla bean type sauce. Very yummy! WONDERFUL steak dinner in Berlin, happened to walk past and thought it would be worth stopping. They have menus in nearly every language, and the food was superb. Easily the best meal we had while in Berlin. Moderately expensive,but worth the large amount of food you receive. Large menu with plenty of variety, and from our experience, all of it was great! I have gone to the Block Houses a lot of times in Hamburg, but this was my first time in Berlin. Unfortunately, it was not too good... the first time the meat was way more bloody than ordered and when I gave it back the return one was so try you could not eat it. Additionally, the there was a chord in the meat, so basically the meat was bad all around. The waiter was nice though and gave me bruscetta while i had to wait for the steak and offered a coffee b/c of the bad meat. But still, the place is not that cheap and having to pay for a bad steak is just annoying. I know though, that the Block House is normally a great restaurant, so I will give them the benefit of a doubt and come back eventually... maybe just to a different location. read more

Very good restaurant. The steaks were excellent and the service was even better. They definitely had one of the best filets I have ever had, and the herb butter makes it even better. We were not a fan of the sour cream though, but this has been typical here as the sour cream is not like that in the US. Terrible! Rushed here for dinner as our kids were hungry after strolling through the museums. Food took 1 hr to arrive, while kids grew more & more famished. Asked for garlic bread, which never arrived, while we waited and waited. To add insult to injury, my dinner was not even hot. Their NY burger was definitely not a NY burger. Burger was over cooked & featured a dry, tasteless toasted white roll (served on only 1/2 a roll, one on the bottom of the burger) and some kind of vinegary chopped tomatoes topping the meat. Normally, my kids would never eat anything vinegary, but they were starving by the time the food arrived. Food was very overpriced, and disappointing. Our waitress looked very tired and over stressed (to her credit, she kept her calm and remained polite tending to so many tables of waiting customers), but they keep packing in the people. Lesson learned, don't go against your instinct and rush into a tourist trap. That quick meal might keep you waiting longer and spending a lot for a bad meal you'll wish to write off quickly. read more

Stopped in here for an early dinner one night while exploring Berlin. Overall it was great. The steak was cooked perfectly, the garlic break & baked potato were delicious additions to the steak. Dinner also came with a salad - no complaints there either. Prices were a bit more on the pricey side, but to us it was worth it. Server was nice and pleasant, felt like we were well taken care of.
