We have gotten 5 birds from them and they are amazing! Very healthy birds, very well socialized. I love that they health test every bird for the most common infectious diseases so you know you have a healthy bird before you bring them home. They're invested in the birds you get too--any time you have a question or concern, at any point in the bird's life, they will be there to provide help, support, and knowledge. Well, I bought my bird last summer from them and he's been amazing. I spent about two months researching the specific breed I wanted and got everything. Large cage, lots of toys, safe hooks, natural perches, correct food, the whole nine yards. This is my first bird ever, so I knew I didn't want to buy from a large chain store after learning about the heavy cons. Finding their store was a savior, the closest one to me with a LARGE selections of birds. I sent them some questions on Facebook and got good quick responses that made me confident in choosing them. They really care for their birds, and have excellent knowledge, but that's where I saw a fault in service. When I came in meeting the bird I was interested in, the lady helping me was reminding me every single detail about owning a bird. And I know their probably doing that to make sure I'm not some uneducated pet owner but it got to an annoying point where I was questioning if they even wanted to give the bird to me hinting that I wasn't properly prepared for it (which I was.) I remember being able to take home the bird that day due to it getting attached with its flock mates, and as I sat down waiting for them to get the bird and ring up an older lady behind the counter began to make very obvious whispers about me to the woman who had shown me the bird. Me and my mom heard everything, and honestly it made me and her feel uncomfortable and awkward, my father on the other hand was completely over it. The lady was questioning why we would get a cage before the bird (which confused me) and that it wasn't from them. Then she went on about if I was worthwhile and looked appropriate for owning such a big responsibility. I know I'm young, but I'm not stupid, nor a child. The lady seemed to calm down her comments once my dad paid up. (Seems a bit money driven to me) I also want to make it known that they clip their birds wings, which I don't really find necessary and a heavy downside. They didn't specify to me if they were or not until I was there viewing the bird. I wasn't gonna pass him down just for that though, but it really disappointed me. His flight feathers are growing back perfectly now and I can't wait! In all, their establishment is a great idea, but staff seem to be dragging it downhill. My bird is healthy with no problems, loves to cuddle, and talk, so I can't beat that. I probably wouldn't go back there for my next bird mainly having to do with staff. read more

I have bought bird supplies many times for my Meyers parrot Rio and recently boarded him for the first time and now again for the second time. The people at bird and reptile connection have been so wonderful. Rio loves it there and they treated myself and my 2.5 yo daughter so kind. The man who I assume is a manager or owner there was so kind to show my daughter his pet snakes and let her pet them and was so accommodating and friendly. He put me at ease and I could see he really loved and cared about the animals there. He was still kind to my bird even when my bird was not very nice to him. So I've had my little lady for about A month now. Was a little worried when we got her home because of some weight loss. Today Reba McFlyer is a healthy 85g and doing great. I'm giving five stars because my bird is healthy and happy and was taken care of well. When I first got her we had to come back and do a weight check in. I will not be using names, but when we checked in the person was helping weigh Reba immediately starting cussing and ranting about people who go to country music festivals(myself being one) I'm 29 years old but I really don't want hear the work "f*ck" thrown around all overs it's simply not professional and definitely a reason I won't bring my son with me to pick up supplies. So we finally got on the subject I was there about, my bird. I've owned a few birds, this being my first cockatiel. I know bringing them home they will lose weight because of the stress. But the way this person made me feel like Reba was about to die or something. I kept to all of their rules, ten mins out at a time, multi food dishes, seed, beans... you name it. I left feeling like I had hurt my bird and cried in the car. Before I got she was 81g and the first week I had her she lost 4gm. I took the bird to the vet right after and my visit . Avian vet at Angel told me that my bird is completely healthy and lost weight due to stress of the move with the 30 minute drive. One of the things it's kind of great but kind of weird about this store is that they can make you come back and do weigh ins. I understand the first week. But if there are issues with the bird the second week I'd trust to rather take her to a vet than have some 23 year jumping down my throat. I saw the bad reviews for this place and now I know who they are talking about. I love the passion for the birds and I know you all deal with a lot of people who think a tiny cage and a diet of seed is okay. I am a person who has my birds out more than in a cage, and they are fed very well. I take care of my birds and I am responsible. The utter lack of professionalism was a huge turn off. But unfortunately I know that you all are the closest actual bird store near me. Thank you for this little buddy, but it's not cool or funny to cuss at work. It's not funny or cool to sit there and call a group of people degenerates because of the fact they listen to country music. And then tell a whole 10 min story about it. And if your boss would be fine with it(which you mentioned more than once) maybe they should change their attitude as well. I've worked in customer service my whole life and never have I seen anyone act this unprofessional at work. I left a really bad taste in my mouth and this is why I waited so long to write this review because I wanted to see if I still felt that way, frankly I haven't been back because of this. **THIS REVIEW IS FOR REPTILE OWNERS** First off as a few reviews point out there isn't much of a selection (mostly snakes) and a good number of them on display are boarded. Having said that this place has a good selection of supplies for your cold blooded friend and won't try to sell you on overpriced gimmicks. The reptile guy is very informative and knowledgeable about taking care of reptiles properly and efficiently. Mentioned above was boarding which is pretty good to know since they're not easy to come by and another good thing is they adopt out rescued and surrendered reptiles. I love this place because of how much they care about their birds, they have lots of stuff for both birds and reptiles, I bought a cockatiel from here who is very friendly and has a beautiful coloration they give lots of good advice on how to properly feed and care for your bird my only problem with them is how strict they are on who the sell to, I understand that not everyone is fit to own a bird or reptile but how are you supposed to learn unless you try, also they have the reptiles in very small enclosures and they have no room to move and all for the sake of having a larger stock of reptiles when buying an animal from here please be aware that you need to have prior experience to purchase an animal read more

It's all about the birds. They come first & Martha & Joey will absolutely let you know that. They have everything a bird could need. My Quaker Parrot kind of adopted me when I was sitting with Martha as she waited for him to be surrendered back to the store (we haven't any idea why). I wasn't planning on getting a bird, I just wanted to talk about the possibility of getting one. Well, Joey cleaned Peanut's cage & completely outfitted it with everything a bird would like. He got food, treats & a carrier ready. Peanut went from his cage to my shoulder & never left. I like to believe he chose me because we bonded within minutes. Joey followed me home, brought the cage up, set it up, showed me how & what to feed Peanut & stayed to answer my questions. I can't say enough about these people. I think some folks may have had their feathers ruffled by the staff but my experience was that they just care about the birds - so many parrots get relinquished in general and the staff at The Bird and Reptile Connection want to make sure you know your stuff and that you are not just there on an impulse. I popped in here the other night near closing and was beyond impressed with the service and passion the employees have - they legitimately care about their birds and have also taken in some rescues from really difficult situations. I mentioned I have a 17 year old grey (adopted from my mother) who is a picky eater and underweight, and the man who works there gave me about 5 different samples of food to try, vet suggestions, and enrichment ideas. Next thing I know I was walking out of the store with a couple pounds of different bird foods and a small stack of Dixie cups to make toys with. Although they do not have iguanas there, the young gentleman that I spoke to was very knowledgeable and spoke to me at lengths about iguana and reptile care. He even helped me find the right supplies that I needed. I would much rather go here for supplies than a chain store, where the employees think they know what they're talking about ... After going to a multitude of places for a pet bird, I went to Bird & Reptile. When I first walked in, I noticed how organized the store was. I was greeted by Martha who took me to the bird room and brought out every cockatiel and conure they had. The birds were clearly hand raised and very well taken care of. I got an incredibly good vibe and the fact that they let me hang out with the green-cheeked conure for about an hour before my purchase was amazing. They were incredibly helpful and even told me to bring in my cage at a later point in time so that we can set it up together just for my GCC. Well...we USED TO love this place. They were great. We biased our severe macaw, citron cockatoo and our 2 keets with then in 2010. We bought a new bird from them Dec 31, 2013. We love her. So we are going on a vaca in July wanted a place to board them. Our former BirdSitter that came to our house many years works there. We talked to her- she said they would just need to be vet-checked. Got a call today. The girl that called, and someone else standing in the background, kept coming up with every excuse they could possibly muster as to why we couldn't board our birds there, EVEN IF THEY WERE VET CHECKED/TESTED! If anyone is Jay there, this just come out and say it instead of dancing around the subject over and over and over. She talked of to me like I was some dumb child - I've had birds for 25 years, I know all the risks and possibilities of strange birds bringing in new illnesses. However, ours have zero contact with anyone or any other animal. Period. And they've been to the vet within the last yr for a checkup. Very odd how they made such a huge deal about selling us the conure and made us bring her back a week later to make sure we were feeding her properly. (REALLY???) Now this! They just lost a customer that they've had for over 10 years. Too bad, because they seem to take good care of their birds. It's just that they don't care about their customers once they leave the store. Good luck folks - don't go there. Their food and cages are way overpriced anyway. read more

I just purchased a baby cockatiel from The Bird and Reptile Connection in December. She's just about ready to come home and I'm so excited! Martha, Joey and the rest of the staff have been so kind, helpful and knowledgeable. They're also very caring towards the birds. They're clean, fed good quality food and even get chop. They're monitored closely to make sure they all seem healthy and are growing and gaining or maintaining weight to go home with new families. I even noticed staff pulling toys from the shelves to give to the babies in their care on more than one occasion. They have gone above and beyond during this process as I visit twice a week to spend time with my new little lady. Always happy to answer questions and they're honest and tell it to you like it is. They have even given me tips on caring for my little old arthritic cockatiel I currently own. I always enjoy my visits with my baby, but I enjoy talking to staff as well and of course picking their brains with all my questions. I've been seeing and hearing reviews about the price of the birds and why the bird stays the amount of time it does. Also why they have you come back for a weight check. Well here's what I've noticed and learned: Formula is not cheap and they go through a lot of it! They're also feeding them fresh fruits/veggies and provide seed, millet and toys and perches for each cage/bird. The shavings at the bottom of the cage pans adds up too. There's a lot that goes into their care. Time as well as money. You're getting a beautiful DNA tested, well bred, hand tame baby who is healthy before leaving (although you should set up a vet visit when your new baby gets home for an exam and testing with your avian specialist)! They have you wait until the bird had decided it's weaned and that it's maintaining it's weight off formula. They're doing it the right way. I'd rather wait longer and have it done correctly. They really care about the birds. They do ask you to come back for a weight check which is important for the well being of your bird. If your bird is losing weight they can guide you on what to do to help pack on the grams again before it becomes detrimental to your birds health. They have a fantastic selection of toys for all species and sizes! They have a lot of food, treats and other things to choose from as well. It's an overall great store! I have been going to this store for years. I have only returned because of one very helpful staff member and I am not even sure if she is still there. The owner has always been rude and unhelpful. I purchased a cage and took it home. It was not put together properly and collapsed with the birds inside in less than 10 minutes. It was missing pieces. I called about returning it and was told no... not I am out $200 + I was promised a call from the owner martha but she never called me. The customer service was TERRIBLE. They treat you like you're an inconvenience or an annoyance at best, and that's when you ARE spending money. If you're just browsing, good luck. The birds are good though. they do have a good variety of supplies and food, but it's all overpriced. It shouldn't be called the bird and reptile connection however, since there's no reptiles and only a handful of reptile supplies. I DO NOT recommend going here. Let's get this straight- parrots are inherently wild animals and it's pretty crappy that Petsmart is selling big honking beaks that will ultimately end up in a rescue. So no, I'm not one for breeding establishments and/or pet stores. Just adopt goddammit and do the world a favor. [end rant] But Bird & Reptile Connection actually UNDERSTANDS the concept of responsible breeding. Martha and Walter are wonderful, decent people and I give them props for being beyond conscientious about what they sell and to whom they sell it. I've seen Martha discourage uneducated people from purchasing one of her birds because she wants to make sure that it's going to be properly taken care of. And if that's not enough to make me a customer for life, the way she's taken an interest in us personally is. Not that I generally care if a shop keeper knows my name or asks about my day, mind you. But before we realized the plight of unwanted birds in general, we bought our cockatiel here. Unfortunately, our cockatiel is the bionic cockatiel and has been to Angell Memorial more than her fair share of times. We live near Martha and Walter so in the past we've asked them to bring home store items so we could appropriately disinfect the cage and not only did they do so, but they consistently called each day to see how the bird was doing because they were concerned. Seriously. Now that's dedication and those are good peeps. So here's the deal- if you have a bird or reptile, you'll want to make a connection with the Bird abd Reptile Connection. We purchased our new baby cockatiel at this store. The people who work there are fantastic. They can tell you all about every bird in the store. All the birds look happy, and the cages are clean. After a week, my cockatiel lost alot of weight from not eating. Barbara suggested we keep the bird at the store for a few days to fatten back up. They were so nice! They'd monitor and weigh her twice a day. After 5 days, her weight was back up and I took her home. I love that the store is privately owned (Martha is the owner) and the attention they give the baby birds is unparrallel to anywhere else. It looked like all the birds are hand fed and as a result, very friendly to humans. It's the only store I use for all my bird stuff. read more

It is unfortunate that the customer service here is completely substandard. I have called to inquire about boarding here twice and was treated very rudely by a woman who asked me a few curt questions (if I bought the birds there, health certificates). Instead of being helpful about what was needed to get my birds boarded, she snapped at me with all the requirements the store has, in a way that was not productive and ultimately ended the conversation. She was clearly annoyed to be talking to me on the phone. I decided to finally write this review after hearing from a friend who called there about boarding and was treated in a similar fashion. Additionally, about a month before these phone calls, I went into the store for the first (and only) time to pick up supplies and had a similar experience with a woman at the front desk. Not helpful and not friendly. She was annoyed that I wanted to look at the birds in the bird room and was not personable at all. You get the impression that it is a nuisance for her to have customers in the store. Lastly, I wrote an email inquiring whether they had any caiques in the store for sale, on behalf of a friend who was looking for one. In response, I got a very bossy and unhelpful email saying that caiques were not good parrots to have and that they were aggressive. Well, this did not sit well with me as I am the proud owner of two caiques who I love more than anything and are gentle, social birds. Do the people here really want to run a business? This is not the way to treat customers. I am truly appalled by their employees' consistent level of rudeness. I am asking the owner of the store to PLEASE have a talk with your employees to change this around. You have a great selection of supplies, so it is a shame I won't be going there (or calling) anytime soon - I don't feel like being treated like a second-class citizen again. read more

The Bird and Reptile Connection in Walpole is pretty much the only store we use for our parroting needs and also one of the few decent bird stores in the state. The ladies that work there are very nice, will come to recognize you, and will try to remember what type of bird you have. The birds are kept in back and are well cared for. They have clean cages, fresh food, playmates, and are allowed some time out of their cages during the day. Bonded pairs are not split up - yay! The store has a small but decent assortment of foraging toys as well as a good number of regular toys for anything from a parrotlet to a large macaw. There also have lots of cages for all sizes and at pretty good prices. The manzanita trees are a bit pricey but our birds love them. B+R carries all the popular brand name pelleted diets as well as the organic brands like Roudybush and Harrison's. They also have a dried bean mix sold for like a dollar a pound. Our birds love to get warm, cooked beans for dinner. We also found our birdsitter through B+R. She works there and is great with our birds; even the feisty little conure liked her. Note: i have never dealt with the reptile aspect of the store and cannot comment on that. read more

Hard to get to as it is off of route one and I had to wait until I could do a you turn. It was a waste of a trip. They need to change their name to just birds. I have just purchased a fourth bird, a caique from B&R. I have previously purchased a sweet little goffins and 2 greys (brothers). I was referred to B&R through my avain vet when a grey I had purchased from a PET Store was ill and eventually passed away at the tender age of 6. Best referral I ever got. I knew as soon as I walked in the door I was in the right place. I was greeted by Martha who is always so bubbly, friendly and welcoming. All her baby birds ARE her babies and she is very protective of them.!!! Martha has a wealth of knowlege about the behavior, and care of all her birds. The first baby I got there, an adorable little goffins, was raised by one of the woman at the store named Pat. She even became teary eyed when it was time for us to bring the little one home. Everyone that works there, Martha and her hubby Walter, Amanda, Marie, Pat and Barbara are just so wonderful. They all bond and get to know the personalities of all their babies. They all show so much caring and love for all their birds and are careful to make sure they only go to homes where they will be very much loved and properly taken care of. They will recommend that you come to visit your baby often while it is being weaned so you my bond and get to know each other before it comes home. A follow up call is always received when you take your baby home to make sure all is well. You can call anytime for advice or have any questions. I have boarded all my birds there numerous times knowing that they would be very well taken care of. All their birds come from very reputable breeders that they know personally, and are lovingly hand raised and socialized in their care. Whenever I stop by, I am always greeted by name and am asked how my babies are. They always remember my babie's names. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BIRD AND REPTILE CONNECTION TO EVERYONE !!!! The store is very clean and welcoming. The owners and staff are extremely knowledgable, friendly and helpful. They sell a variety of any supplies you would need. Most of all you can be sure you are taking home a healthy, well cared for, hand raised, socialized, very sweet baby bird !!! I am so happy to have found the Bird and Reptile Connection. I do agree that they should have a change in name but as far as birds go... they're really healthy and good birds! I wouldn't buy one any place else. They trim our birds nails and wings and they have the best crickets for our bearded dragon! So much better than Pet Smart. We go in to visit the birds every time we go in for services and they all just seem to love to be held and played with and talked to. We love it here. read more

They seem to be phasing out reptiles in favor of birds, and I hate irresponsible breeding, but I thought this store had some of the most beautiful exotic birds I have ever seen. I've been in the avian field now for nearly 25yrs having both wild & exotic pet species experience. And i've worked with and owned MANY species of parrots over the years as well. That all said, i felt it was important to give this establishment the proper "kudos" it rightfully deserves via my review. 25yrs is a LONG time to be in this field so i've been into my fair share of "bird establishments" over the years and none of them came close to this store. When i purchased my Senegal Parrot Kia from these folks i was VERY impressed with there knowledge and ability to answer my questions. When your living in an area such as myself that doesn't have many "outlets" as far as purchasing pet birds much less have any "reputable breeders". It was VERY "refreshing" to have these folks within a reasonable driving distance from where i live. They literally have ALL the supplies one needs whether your a first time aviculturist or an experienced handler like myself. The store is clean and the staff are great and I will continue to purchase my birds from Martha because they are in top notch condition health wise. But more importantly because Martha and her staff put there animals interests FIRST before making a profit. Which as anyone should know is saying A LOT these days when your dealing with any commercial establishment. Bottom line folks, I can't recommend this place highly enough for ALL your pet bird/s needs & supplies.
