The little old lady with bad hair and caked make-up will present to you as if she is a lovable Bubba, the proverbial sweet grandma. Watch out though as it is a con. She is talking to deliberately distract you. 1) They don't mark the prices of most of their wine and packaged goods. She then charges whatever she thinks you'll pay. 2) She will overcharge you----she actually adds items on to the bill. Read the other YELP reviews, too much evidence against them! If you decide to go in there anyway, demand an itemized receipt. Watch out as her daughter and husband are part of the con. They took my AmEx this time though. read more

THEY KNOWINGLY STEAL FROM YOU. ASK FOR AN ***ITEMIZED RECEIPT***. I have worked in the restaurant business for 4 years. I know things happen and you can accidentally charge people for extra things fairly easily. But a $15 charge on my itemized receipt where all of the sandwiches are ~$9? (I asked for the itemized copy when I noticed the total price of 4 sandwiches and 1 bag of chips was $64). And for this to happen to many other reviewers? That does not happen by accident. And when I confronted them about it, the male owner was extraordinarily defensive while the old female owner smirked in the background. She knew. He proceeded to go on a spiel about how they've been here for 25 years blah blah blah and never once apologized. You'd think they would be better at stealing. We have lived in Annapolis for 20 years and come here twice a week on average. They recognize and know us, so I cannot imagine what they sneak onto out of towners' bills. BUYER BEWARE read more

Family owned business, the cheese lady has been in the business for several generations. While I wouldn't go for the wines, she knows cheese, and they can make MEAN sandwiches. Last time we were here was celebrating a 30 year USNA reunion....hard to believe it was time for 35. This business is better than ever....I don't think they raised their prices in 5 years so they got upped a star for same great sandwich at even better prices. The owners seem nice to me, but maybe that's not the case for everyone. Still, the H2 answers any of those criticisms in full. I've gone here for years and have always loved it. Unlike some of the other reviews, I found the place to be quite quaint. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The only problem was when my husband asked for no condiments on the sandwich he ordered. My husband does not like condiments and the gentleman taking our order seemed to be offended by this request. Other then that, the food was great, prepared well. They also have a program that families sign up for that is like a savings account for the Naval Academy students. That was pretty cool, and it helps the sailors get a good meal. Great variety and we will go back again. read more

I told her I did not want the onions and tomatoes and my husband chimed in and said she could just put them on our bagel. Rudest customer service I have ever encountered! I was in a hurry so I didn't notice that I was overcharged by $20 until checking my receipt. I went right back and had to complain for over half an hour to get my refund. The only saving grace is that the food was tasty. Still, not compelling enough to ever return. Over the last six years, I've tried and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. When you live less than 60 seconds from their door, you'd expect, at the least, a smile. Not so much. The food is good. Not great, but good and very different from most of what downtown offers. But the prices are high (for non sandwiches- outrageous) and the service stinks. (I one time witnessed the female owner bark at a child b/c he opened the front door more than twice.) The sandwhich selection is what earned them a 2nd star. Don't buy any drinks or chips- they're marked up about 200%. They don't put prices on the items because "it's hard to get them off when making gift baskets" ... when in reality they wait to ring it up and hope that people are too embarrassed to put something away b/c of the price. It works 80% of the time and for that 20% that say no thanks, they talk about behind their backs. The bagels come from a favorite bagel shop... seen the male owner in there picking them up. While I have seen them be very nice to some patrons, (notably St. Mary's students, Mids, and people dressed a certain way) I've seen them be downright rude... and heard them bad mouth people. And that is just unacceptable so they don't get my business or recommendation. read more

The food, as many others have said, was really good quality. Unfortunately, the good quality was overshadowed by the high price and lackluster customer service. My husband and I did really enjoy our sandwiches, but $23 for two drinks and 2 sandwhiches? We could have had a sit down lunch elsewhere with better service. FACTS: Although the sandwiches are good, the "extras" are overpriced. The thing that took me most was that the large fountain soda in a styroam cup was $3.50. Regular bottle of Coke was $2.50. The baguette was $2 extra. The chips were $2.25. Oh no! Oh Hell NOOOO~OOOOHHHH! I went in yesterday about 2PM and ordered five(5) sandwiches and got four(4) sandwiches. In addition, I picked up five soft drinks and a bag of chips (normally $1.59 anywhere). It cost over $55 bucks with chips at $5.50 and the sodas at $3.00 per pop. I asked and said I ordered five(5) sandwiches; however, she said I only ordered 4. The older lady forcefully stated that she never makes mistakes, and I could not make a big issue since a crowd of people (Hobart Squash Team, about 15 people walked in to order). Bottomline: 1. They may have somehow bought "Best Sandwiches in Annapolis, Md"! 2. Their service is the bottom of the Pit! 3. Their price is sky high! NOTE: Even I, a former US Army Captain can make a better sandwich by charging less then the Big Cheese. You can look at other reviews from myself. I only have few; however, they are mostly good. I was just reminded by my son to write the review of this C(S)hit Hole in Annapolis. Never say never does not apply here at "The Big C(S)hit Hole"! Oh my God! I literally made a yelp account to leave this review... The sandwiches are decent, but this place is a total scam. My parents bought me a $50 credit to the Big Cheese. This credit was good for about 3-4 visits. Every visit included the usual "call your parents and tell them to put more money on your account. tell them if they don't put more money on your account you will flunk out of school, etc." On my first visit I asked for a baguette to go with my sandwich. The older women with the caked on make-up "kindly" offered me a slice of cheese to go with the baguette. I accepted her gracious offer. Next thing I know, she rings up a piece of cheese that wouldn't even be able to be placed on top of a ritz cracker for $10!! Sadly, I paid the total and returned a couple more times to use my account. On my last visit I had $7 left on my account. My total came out to about $14 (sandwich and drink). I told the lady to use the rest of my account and I would pay the remainder off my credit card. She knew I would never come back if I had no money left on my account so she told me that "it's too complicated to do that, what you need to do is call your parents and have them put more money on your account, and use your credit card for your whole order this time." I knew her tricks too well by now and turned her fat a$$ down. She resisted. I persisted. It wasn't easy, but I slayed the dragon. I made this lady use the remainder of my account. I could see the smoke rolling out of her ears as she was pissed I had beat her at her game. On the way out I told her I would call my parents right away to have them put more money on my account. That was the last day I have stepped foot inside those disgusting doors to buy expensive sandwiches from ugly snakes. read more

St. Mary's Slugger: order it, you won't be disappointed. I've tried several of their sandwiches but the SMS is by far my favorite. It runs about $6.90 which is somewhat pricey for a sandwich but what can you expect in downtown Annapolis. The SMS has turkey, Swiss bacon and honey mayo on toasted sour dough. YUM They sell many sandwiches featuring brie cheese if you're a fan. The granny smith apple and brie is a great tasting sandwich. I have been in many times where the "mean sandwich lady" has been a bit tudy! I just told the b*tch to shut the hell up and make my sandwich! (no I didn't, but it would have been fun!) She has her moments but the sandwiches are worth it. They offer beer and wine for sale and other cute items like cheeses and spreads. If you're in downtown Annapolis don't miss this great sandwich shop. Just ignore the mean lady if she's in one of her "angry moods". "No soup for you, next!" I've eaten here six times and in four out of the six visits I've witnessed or have been victimized by he vile attitude of "the Daughter." I'm from New England so I'm a bit of an expert in the art of rudeness and these people take it to another level. The food is OK but it's a deli we're not talking French cuisine here. Order quality meats/cheeses and some fresh baked bread, boom, you've got a good deli. Their Yelp reviews have become more entertainment with everyone sharing nightmarish stories so here's one... My 3 year old son was asking me a barrage of questions because, well, he's 3. "The Daughter" looks me straight in the eye and asks, "Does he ever shut up?" The sandwiches are to die for, it's true. But the service is awful, pushy, and condescending. I have been a cheese-lover since birth, but I haven't been back to this place since they sold me a cheese that had clearly gone bad (classic ammonia taste) and tried to pass it off on my "lack of experience with more pungent cheeses." oh my GOD, you guys are wimps. before I ever came here, I spent a solid year being scared off by Yelp's stories of soup Nazis and bad service. but the people who work here are really nice, especially by the rest of the country's deli standards! to anybody who thinks the people here are mean: I would recommend that you never, EVER go to a deli anywhere else in the world. anyway, the sandwiches here are eerily good - great bread, great cheese, great spreads, meats, etcetera; even the lettuce and tomato are always top notch. my sandwich of choice is the David's Delight, a six foot high construction featuring turkey, chicken salad, and bacon that I always order at the beginning of the cold season so that I can store the calories throughout the winter. things are expensive, yes, but what in the world do people expect from high end delis serving cured meats and raw cheese? you get what you pay for, friends. and anyway, every sandwich I've ever had here has been big enough to last two rounds. they also have a decent selection of beer and wine, a nice little meat and cheese counter, some snackish food (peanuts, chips, dip), and even a miniature grocery aisle with sauces and pasta and that sort of thing. read more

Sandwich fans beware, your match has been met. This "off the beaten path" or rather right on it, sandwich/cheese shop is tops. With a line up of delicious sandwichs everyone seems to have their own favorite. I like the Annapolitan, or H7. A Turkey on wheat with thin sliced Granny Smith Apples and then melted Brie, Yum. Its not cheap, and might make you think you have accidentally ordered something in NYC, but its worth the price. Some say the service is gruff, but I say its New Jersey friendly. read more

I lived in Annapolis for six and a half years and not only did The Big Cheese and Sammy's Deli (which is what the sandwich area of the store is actually called, named after one of the owners grandsons) became a staple of my Sunday afternoon routine, but it has been one of the things that I miss most about Annapolis. First, the sandwiches are to die for. They have a large selection to choose from ranging from the usual (BLT or PB&J) to the unusual (the Howdy Judy which consists of blue cheese, fresh pear slices, almonds, arugula and lemon curd dressing) to the incredible (my favorites are the Annapolitan and the Downtowner). The bread is delivered daily and the ingredients are always fresh so, no matter what you decide on, you'll not be disappointed. The baked goods are incredible as well; try the crumb cake. The Big Cheese portion of the store provides a source of wine, cheese, snacks, beverages and hot sauce to the historic downtown area and transient yacht-dwellers of Annapolis. The cheese selections are great and the baguettes are awesome. The other ingredient that really makes this establishment one of my favorite stops in Annapolis is the owners. They are incredibly sweet and are genuinely happy to see you. They are very helpful with their suggestions and have never steered me wrong. They directed me to a cheese there once that I could write an entire 5-star review about. Be aware that, as with almost everything in the historic part of Annapolis, the prices are not what you would call bargain basement. Sandwiches run from just under $4 for the PB&J to around $8 and maybe a little more depending on your bread choice. Not all together unreasonable; however, the wine and cheese selections are pricey when compared to other locations not located within 50 steps of City Dock. That being said, what I wouldn't give to be able to roll out of bed on a Sunday and stroll over to Sammy's Deli for a Downtowner (roast turkey, cheese, sprouts, cucumber and apple butter....I'm dying thinking about it). One thing to note is that the address that is shown is incorrect. Market House is wack and will remain so until the current mayor of Annapolis loses an election to someone who is competent and the space is managed correctly (sorry that is the political fire in me speaking). The actual address is 47 Randall Street which is just down the street from Market House, across from Middleton's just up from the hardware store. read more

This place is awesome! Their sandwiches are amazing. I highly recommend the Annapolitan on a french baguette. You won't be disappointed. They are always busy around lunchtime, so be patient. It's worth the wait. If you get the good bread, it might run you $9-10, otherwise about $7-8. The bottled drinks are a little overpriced, but really good- like black cherry lemonade. There is no place to sit inside, so you have to get your sandwich to go. I have been here a number of times and have never been treated poorly. Delicious ma & pop shop! They have tons of sandwich combinations and I've never been disappointed with the food. There is no place to sit, so you have to take it to go. One of my favorite quick bites in Annapolis! Although sandwiches are highly recommended (I originally gave them a 5), I have lowered my stars to a 3 because of more than 1 encounter with the ma of the ma and pop duo who was a bit rude, snappy and condescending to customers who were unfamiliar with their lines/process. Yum! I love the wide variety of sandwiches offered here, and the use of more meats/cheeses than the usual. Many of their sandwiches were served on long baguettes, which essentially meant two meals! We ordered from here for a staff luncheon, and I am happy to report that 11/11 sandwiches were as ordered! read more
