This place has a good name and located in a busy section of town. I think the selection seemed okay and was surprised how empty it was on a Saturday. Unethical behavior by owner. We were blatantly over charged for a box of crackers. Owner changed it to 10 bucks on charge hoping we wouldn't notice. Looking at other reviews I've noticed that others complain about the lack of pricing on items and it clearly is so they can overcharge tourists. I hadn't been to The Big Cheese in years. It used to be that that was the only place to get good cheese but now lots of grocery stores have a reasonable assortment. Nevertheless, a few weeks ago, I decided to "buy local." So, we took a drive to Annapolis for a cheese date. Cheese is a personal preference. I got a Canadian cheddar, a bit of St Agur, and a creme. It's my usual mix: something hard, something rich and aromatic, and something subtle. All of them were spot on. Of course, I wouldn't expect anything else because, at the end of the day, the cheese isn't made there and all they do is cut it and sell it. So, why go to a cheese shop? For the service. The service was impeccable. The owner was super friendly. She offered samples and tastings. She was really enthusiastic about the cheeses. And that's what you want. Someone who does more than sell the cheese but can give you some history of the cheese and why that one was selected for sale instead of some other. You rarely get that from the kid at the grocery store. We also got a sandwich to share. It was a date after all. The turkey, Brie, and Granny Smith on a French roll. It was served warm so the Brie was super soft but not runny. The Apple was thinly sliced and crispy in every bite. And the turkey was lightly seasoned. All the flavors complemented each other nicely. I might have to recreate that sandwich. To do so, though, I have to go to the cheese shop. And if I'm going to the cheese shop, I might as well just get the sandwich, right? We'll see... It had been a while since I was last at The Big Cheese, but I think I'll be back soon. read more

Ordered the roast beef sandwich (no. 9, not no. 2) and it was just excellent. The challah roll was amazing on its own--perfectly pillowy with just the right amount of flakiness. The fixings were well proportioned and I'm inclined to believe them when they say the produce is fresh and local. For ~$10 I really can't speak highly enough of the sandwich. The shop is nifty too. I'm especially interested in all the types of pickles they have for sale, but unfortunately wasn't in the market for a jar of them when I came by. Just another excuse to return I guess. read more

Incredibly disappointing experience. We were SO excited to finally check this place out after walking by several times and hearing about it from some friends. Unfortunately, didn't have a chance to even try the food... We came in here around 4:20pm to get some food for our plebe (First year at the naval academy) and ourselves on Induction Day (Thursday, June 27). They said they close at 5pm on their website and on their door. We waited in line to order and had 2 drinks in hand to pay for at the cashier. When it was finally our turn in line, when we said "Can we try the...." The lady (who I believe is the owner) rudely cut us off and said in a "matter of fact" voice "Oh, no! We're not making sandwiches" and looked at us in the most degrading way possible. When we looked at her confused and was like "Oh, really?". She laughed in a "I can't believe you don't know we're not making sandwiches anymore" way. Then she looked at us and said accusingly, " Did you even pay for those?" (she was head nodding to our drinks that we put on the counter for her to ring up). She didn't even give us the time to say we'll get these drinks. Needless to say, we put the drinks back and got the heck out of there. Didn't want to even spend a penny at that place. Just awful customer service skills. I heard one of the other employees being rude to another customer regarding the sandwich thing as well. They don't have to be so rude. If they said it kindly that they weren't making sandwiches anymore, I might've been inclined to come back to try it out the next time we are in town (which is often as we live in Northern VA and visit the Academy often). Will NEVER be returning due to the AWFUL customer service. Thought it may have been just my experience, but after reading these reviews...I guess its pretty common. Good and filling sandwiches here! They never skimp on the meat or cheese and have a huge variety of sandwiches to choose from. This is my favorite place for a good sandwich in downtown annapolis. The owners a little older so they got my order confused with someone else's but I noticed before I paid so it turned out fine. The belly buster is my favorite here so far but I want to try some more before I choose a definitive favorite. This time I got the Uncle Hotsy (roast beef, cream cheese, pineapple habanero sauce, and chopped jalapenos on challah roll) but I swapped my bread for multigrain. I highly recommend, although the sauce drips so be careful when you eat it. It was really sweet and delicious, but I still think the belly buster is better. Be prepared to spend $8-12 on a sandwich. They also have a variety of meats, cheeses, wines, bottled drinks, bakery items, chips, crackers, and more. Their snacks are a little on the pricy end. Mixed feelings about the service: -the young guy is great. He's super friendly and helpful every time. -the older couple (I assume the owners) can be abrasive. I saw some of the earlier reviews from over a year ago and I cannot disagree more!!! The staff and owners were very nice and helpful and the prices for the items were listed!!!! First, for me, being from the hero (sandwich) capital of the world, to write this review about great hero's is a big deal. The bread, which makes or breaks the whole hero, is great. Then they use generous and use tasty ingredients and know how to apply them. Loved the hero's. Service for us was fantastic, I read others reviews and saw some challenges but we had a wonderful time. How is this place in business taking up valuable space in our downtown area!? There could be a warm welcoming establishment in its place!!! This family will leave visitors with a bad taste in their mouth, and though I thought it was our unique experience, I see from other reviews the service is consistently disrespectful! Woman working today 3/9/18 during lunch was incredibly snarky to my husband when he asked the difference between two menu items. The best sandwich in town! In the summertime it is very normal for me to stop by the big cheese, grab the best sandwich (St. Mary's slugger) and go sit by the dock. The service is deli style with a very sweet elderly couple who have owned the business for over 20 years. I have never had a problem with being overcharged here!
