I love this place for it's sandwiches. They actually cater to vegetarians. They have a few wonderful sandwiches for our kind. So you walk in and feel that this place is an upscale gourmet deli with no seating. It's a bit odd, but ok, no seating. Along the wall as you walk in you see all these wonderful hot sauces, spices, dips, crackers etc. They have a great selection of gourmet goodies. You get to the counter and you are greeted by the wonderful family that owns the place, you get treated like a king! They are so friendly and you can tell these people are good people. We have tried many of the sandwiches collectively and so far I recommend them all. They totally stack them, so you do get what you pay for, they charge a bit much. If you are in the area, go see it, walk in, get a bit, try the fancy chips... I think they also offer discounts for midshipmen. read more

I am very disappointed. Who I was with wanted a sandwich so we went inside but I can't eat gluten so I asked the old lady owner if they had any gluten free items. She looked at me with disgust and said their restaurant has been around for x amount of years and that gluten free bread was disgusting and not something she'd ever serve her customers. FYI : I didn't ask if they had gluten free bread I asked if they had gluten free options. She went on to talk smack about the gluten free fad and basically how it's stupid so I said I have an actual allergy and it's not something I can eat to which she retorted "you don't have the right to cut me off" when to be honest she had paused talking... and she was being rude and needed to know that people have genuine allergies. Her voice was also raised. Her face was so contorted and gross with attitude it honestly grossed me out that a simple question got her so riled up and rude. She's a truly pathetic person and doesn't deserve your service. I've never been treated like that I was so stunned I left. The delightful attendant here was honest and frank in helping me select an aged cheddar. I tried a Canadian one she suggested (located I'm bulk display case) and was amazed. It was crumbly and dry and oh-so-flavorful. I also picked up some delicious and authentic baguettes(best I've had in years-crunchy and rich and airy) and suffered anxiety over leaving a city with such superb offerings. Incredibly mean staff -- I have never been treated as poorly by any establishment as I was here. Tried to sneakily upcharge me for something, and when I asked about it, the older woman owner personally insulted me and refused to sell me the sandwich they had already made. It was appalling. This place is awesome!! We always stop and grab lunch here when in town. They have an excellent hot corned beef sandwich and try the pickle chips! They don't have seating which kinda stinks bc it's not always warm out. They have lots to choose from to drink too. Sandwiches are big and tasty, which is good because they can be a bit pricey. They are usually around $8-9. They have so many different creative options that I've never seen before. Very sad at how we were treated by the owner yesterday. We had been coming here by boat for years and bringing guests as well. This time We were shopping and realized that there were no more prices on the products, it was very confusing, the owner walked out from behind the counter as asked if she could be of assistance and I said how do we know what the costs are? and she said ""just ask me and I will tell you" So my response was " how convenient" and she said that she felt insulted and I said how? and she walked away, well it was apparent that I discovered her little scam as that attitude was not necessary, she must size up the clients and see what she thinks she can get away with. Food was good, but I believed they knowingly overcharged me (and as I've read with other reviews, this seems to happen too often). They charged me 24 bucks for a sandwich, small bag of peanuts, brownie and soda... when I questioned the woman who rung me up, she acted annoyed and smug. She told me the sandwich was on special bread (was listed as being 8.95 and no one had indicated my choice of bread would affect the cost..). The brownie was 2 bucks, so I guess the peanuts and soda must have been 6 bucks each? I should have kept my money and walked away, but I paid and left.. and got madder as I thought about it.. Be careful when ordering! They had extra dollars for no reason at the end of your total and will tell u it's just added tax. How can a $10 sandwich suddenly total $13 because of tax?! So the tax is 30%? I don't think so. When questioned, the owner tried to blow me off until I insisted and then she corrected it, but never even apologized. We haven't been to Annapolis since my husbands commissioning in 2013 but made sure to stop by the Big Cheese on our way to the airport. There are a few things to note. . Parking can be a bit of a pain depending on when you come and what's going on. It's well worth finding parking. I see a lot of complaints about the owners wife. . We frequently The Big Cheese once a month years ago and she was always pleasant. During our visit the weekend she was pleasant. I don't think she will take any rude behavior which isn't a bad thing. It's their establishment and they run it how they see fit. My husband got the Annapolitian and I the mozzarella and prosciutto sandwich without bread but with extra roasted red peppers. They don't have gluten free options but they will put anything in a to-go container on a little bed of lettuce which was perfect. Both were SO GOOD and exactly what we remembered them as. Don't be thrown off by any bad reviews. They're delicious and so worth the stop! read more

I went there trying to find some cheese, and the first thing I notice is that they do not price their items. So naturally I ask the price of some cheeses I was interested in, only to find out that I could get the same cheese at Trader Joe's, twice as big, for half the price. So essentially, it is 4 times the price for the exact same thing (which they marketed to be the best thing in the world, as if we could only get it there). But that isn't the reason that compels me to write this. They were some of the rudest shop owners I have ever encountered, especially since you'd expect good treatment in a specialty store like this, and furthermore when they are so overpriced. Instead, I got a constant hovering over my shoulder and looking at what I was contemplating buying, in a most unfriendly manner. The woman then pressed me, asking if I will be buying any cheese, to which I politely said "No, thank you"; her response was "You know, we only sell the best here" in a slightly condescending manner, as if I was somehow not good enough for her shop. They also responded to my "Thank you" upon leaving with a sound that was a mix between a bark and a shriek, clearly annoyed that I didn't buy anything. I am an avid fan of good food, and I am actually usually content with paying for something, even if I feel it is overpriced, if I think the quality is good, and especially if I like the treatment. I wish I could give The Big Cheese two separate reviews: one for food and one for customer service. On the food side, I love the sandwiches here (favorites being the annapolitan and the beef and Brie). I used to live in town and I loved getting these sandwiches. I also love the display of hot sauces and the general set up of the store. On the customer service side, I actually think the female owner is probably mentally ill and this makes The Big Cheese "Amy's Baking Co" level horrific....the difference being of course, that the food is good. I have witnessed this woman yelling, degrading, and scolding customers. I have seen her having full on personality changes basically mid customer interaction. Would I still go here for sandwiches (I no longer live in town, but if I did)...probably not. It's a sandwich. I can make it at home with great ingredients from the huge whole foods in town (or the farmers market) and not risk the encounter with a verbally abusive person. read more

I used to go in here a few times because I could not get enough of their sandwiches, and I used to put up with the horrendous people skills that these people have, but one day I decided never again. These people are disgusting to their customers and rude to each other. When we stopped in on a Saturday afternoon, Sammy's was full of Midshipmen and their families who were grabbing lunch before a Navy football game later that afternoon. It's a traditional deli in that you can pick up some gourmet products and various meats, but nearly everyone was there to get something from the deli's extensive sandwich menu. I did the same. I decided to try two different sandwiches that I could snack on later during my afternoon of watching college football. In an attempt to try an assortment of meats and flavors, I ordered the Hot Pastrami & Swiss and the St. Mary's Slugger. The pastrami & swiss came with deli mustard on toasted rye bread and the St. Mary's Slugger came with turkey, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, and honey mayo on toasted sourdough bread. Both sandwiches were excellent. They piled the pastrami on the toasted rye bread and the spicy brown mustard was just as it should be on a pastrami sandwich, providing a bit of heat and spice while combined with the tangy flavor of the swiss cheese. But if I had to choose a winner between the two sandwiches, I'd go with the St. Mary's Slugger. The roasted turkey was delicious and everything tasted extremely fresh. I actually meant to order the sandwich with the honey mayo on the side but forgot to request that when placing my order. I was happy to make the mistake as the honey mayo ended up being one of the best parts of the sandwich. It was lighter than a traditional mayo and the honey made it taste like a honey mustard. If I were a Midshipman (heaven help us all), I could easily see myself polishing off two or three St. Mary's Sluggers on a regular basis. It was great to be able to order a couple sandwiches from Sammy's Deli and walk over to the waterfront in Downtown Annapolis. We found a spot on a bench and watched the boats sail around the bay while Midshipmen spent time with their friends and families and walked around town. read more

Wow! And I don't mean the food. It's that rude lady behind the counter. Asked her about the baguette on the menu and why the baguette they offered us cost more - well she got bent out of shape. Why. Because basically they're running a scam. On the sandwich menu they're all marked around $8.50 and all served on baguette. Then after u order they hand u a paper and say to "pick a baguette". But it's not the same one on the menu and will cost $2 extra. Then they'll ask if u want roasted red peppers on your mozzerella, tomatoe, olive oil etc. sandwich. An item that normally goes with that sandwich but it's not on the menu - $2 extra. When I asked to see the regular baguette she gave me a dirty look then disappeared for a minute. Came back with a hero roll (aka: grinder or sub roll) . Not at all a baguette. When I said that's a hero roll she yelled at me that it wasn't. So for over $32 we got 2 sandwiches marked at $8.50 each (with tax they should be no more than $19), 2 sodas and 2 bags of chips. Chips and soda cost over $13? No, like I said, they pad and add extra costs willy-nilly. They're schiesters. Won't be back! read more

I don't even really like sandwiches, but I really enjoyed the one I got here! After a day of strolling around DTA, this is a great place to go to grab a bite to eat. I got a roast beef sandwich on a french baquette. I love cheese, so it's a given that I favored that part. The person I was with got a large BLT-type construction that he really enjoyed as well. Prices are decent for the quality you get. They have a fantastic selection of sauces and wines, too, if you're in the mood for it. The only complaint I have was that when I was there, I felt hurried by the people at the counter. I have never been treated so rudely in a shop before. First of all nothing has a price. I think they just make things up when you check out and hope the customer doesn't notice. An older woman with a lot of makeup was at the register. I believe that she is one of the owners. She rang up our 3 sandwiches and then added an additional $11 and $2 with no explanation. We received no receipt. She was aggressively confrontational with my midshipman niece as my niece tried to use her account that she's had there for 4 years. The woman argued with her about her graduation year and then her name. After we paid, the woman refused to let my niece access her remaining balance on her account. The woman told her "We are done! We are even! And I don't think I like you.!" Who says that to a customer??? We were so upset at how the woman treated us, we will never return (even though my niece still has money on her account). We left in shock after paying almost $50 for 3 sandwiches and spent the next several hours in disbelief rehashing the entire interaction. I later told my midshipman son about the story and he said he has experienced that same aggressive confrontational behavior, from the same woman, more than once. He and his friends refuse to go back. They may have good sandwiches in there, but the way she treated us as customers is absolutely inexcusable. I would stay away. read more

Unlike some previous reviewers I didn't experience a bad attitude at all. In fact, I thought the staff here was particularly friendly and it seemed like they were all a family and treated me as such. The main focus here is cheese. All sorts of high quality cheese from all over the world. You can just buy some cheese if you want, or you can get one of their many creative sandwiches. There is an entire selection of sandwiches featuring a specific cheese. They also have a section made with meats. I can't remember exactly what I got, but it had turkey, apples, and brie and was outstanding! Bread was so fresh and the cheese was great. And prices were right too. I could eat here everyday, I cannot stop eating the SMS (St. Mary's Slugger, which is the same sandwich as the Sammy Sandwich) This sourdough based turkey, bacon, swiss and honey mustard sandwich is to die for!!!! but be forewarned Judy can be a bitch. I think the first time I noticed it was when I ordered the Jalapeno jelly and brie sandwich and she charged me $2 more for the baguette, even though it is advertised as on a baguette for the regular price... oh well. also do not buy drinks from there, it was over $2 for a vitamin water when in reality they are at least a dollar less anywhere else. This deli is a gem to the Downtown/City Dock area. I had never heard of this place until I stopped in with a coworker during lunch. First of all, you are always greeted with the nicest smiles and waves and hello's by the owners. The deli smells amazing and their food is wonderful. They have a long long list of sandwiches although (The #1 is my go-to, Dill Havarti/Veggies). You'll need to take the food to-go though, as they don't have an eat-in area. The shop is filled with adorable hostess gifts and great spreads, crackers, not to mention unique wines! Pop in if you're downtown. You will love it! read more

I stumbled into this little gem by accident. I was out on a girls day and we had lunch here. I was a little worried about the prices, since some sandwiches were as much as $9 but I can say it was worth every penny! The couple running the place were super sweet, they were completely unfazed by our group of 15 women! The way they did the ordering was the most efficient I've ever seen in a restaurant. They started making sandwiches as the orders were being placed, so the food was done within 5 min of all the food being ordered. I ordered whatever they recommended as the best, which was the H9: the Taylor Made. Oh my gosh. It was incredible. I'm not sure I've ever had a sandwich THAT good. The sandwiches are all a pretty good size and I could only eat half. They're also really good cold the next day. This place has the whole package: great food that's priced just right, great customer service, they're fast... And its right downtown. The Big Cheese is a MUST if you're in Annapolis! read more
