Once a month The Toejam Carboot Sale is held within The Bernard Shaw. Last Saturday the yard was awash with cars and stalls. The Big Blue Bus Pizza's from their Double Decker Pizza Kitchen were as delicious and charmingly dished up as ever. Other distinctive and very characteristic items available for purchase included Gammy Christmas Jumpers, Christmas Trees for sale handpicked from the Noble Farm in the Wicklow mountains as well as an abundance of Xmas Tree decoration kits. Ice Cream Van Djs, Warm Apple Cider and delicious Sweet and Savoury Crepes a plenty available for purchase alongside Bernard Shaw Coffee House coffee, the hilarious yet idiosyncratic Mulled Buckfast, Arabian pipes on the bus, Hooka Pipes positioned within the smoking area and last but not least Dutch hot tubs out the back are all laid out for your abiding enjoyment. This distinctive set-up is very typical of The Bernard Shaw's general cool ambience that I spoke about in my previous review. It's vibrant without being intimidatingly hedonistic, dynamic minus any self-indulgence - and it is because of the way it implements such an otherwise tricky juxtaposition that I love this place so much. Befittingly, the celebrated DJs Nic James and Melodee putting down the electro boogie, b-more and bass into the wee hours, again contrasted the laid-back vibe radiated by the afternoon goings-on. This drinking hole is rapidly growing to claim the status of my favourite haunt in Dublin.

The Bernard Shaw is a very divisive pub. You either love, hate or love to hate it. Of course, being the alternative trend setter that I am, I fall into none of these categories. I love the balls of a pub to be so different. And I love the graf art inside and out. And I love cheap pints. But I hate the bitterly pretentious stench that hangs over the place, and the desperate need to be cool so shamelessly on display amongst some of the clientele. But that's the price of trying something new I suppose, not everything's going to work. So there you have it, I'm thoroughly divided in how I feel about the place. Far from my first choice on a night out, I'd still hate to see it go.

Special Place in Dublin for Young People. With Friends or for a first Date it's a Great Spot. unfortunately the pizza is bad. Also the shisha.

Ooh, graffiti. Subversion!

If you're tired of Crawdaddy, think that Wax has too many emo kids but still want somewhere achingly hip to hang out, why not take yourself along to The Bernard Shaw just off Camden St? The Bernard Shaw was at one stage just another one of the many pubs between Dame St and the canal, but since Bodytonic have become involved with the place, it has become uber-trendy and prone to all sorts of hipster affectations. "What's the trendiest type of music around? Dubstep? Cool, let's start doing that then. A car-boot sale on Sunday so that everyone can buy vintage clothes and kitsch crap of every disctinction? Done." All pretentious nonsense aside, The Bernard Shaw is a good place to go for a night out, or even just a few early evening drinks, what with their pitchers and €3.50 pints. Just don't play your Black Eyed Peas ringtone in there or they'll run you out of the place.

I take back some of my former criticism about this pub. I went back to The Bernard Shaw to see my friend Danny's band play and I had an excellent night. Even before the band started, this girl DJ was playing a really interesting mix of records, some international sounds with African beats and classic oldies. The band Fandango played great reggae/ jazz/ funk music and people were dancing their pants off on the minuscule dance floor. The bar staff were really easy going and gave away free lollies when you purchased a drink. Drinks were on special, 2 for 1 Mojitos!

Fully and trusted hipster venue. I you see a fence used to park single speed bikes, a wall with an attractive Graffiti and a house founded in 1895 maybe you are in front of The Bernard Shaw. No doubts there, come in, you will enjoy it. Inside two small rooms, the first one is just the bar. They use to have art exhibitions with emergent artist. Downstairs the second room, kind of cocktail bar with some tables to enjoy the drink. A third space is the backyard, with a pizzeria bus, a billiard and more tables to sit. And of course, more graffitis. I would like to recommended the deal pizza and pint that you can get in the bar. The pizzas there are nice. The pint of Guinness with the day, sometimes is good, sometimes average. Go for a night hipster, go for a night to the Bernard Shaw!

I love this place. Perfectly underwhelming on the exterior, as soon as you enter you begin what feels as an adventure through the different bars/rooms. Young vibe, hipster bar, i will be back. Great service and no tourists

Passing by, you wouldn't know that this place is huge! Enter the pub, and there are a few tables and a bar. There's a menu on the wall to order eats like pizza (which smells amazing!) They also have a mojito special (although I think they could use a bit of a kick...) Head downstairs and you'll find a couple more spaces with tables and video screens and great tunes! Then make your way outside and discover their 'secret' gem! A double-level bus with a kitchen and seating on the top floor. It's the coolest thing ever! Order a pizza and head upstairs! If the day is warmer, forget the bus and play some pool in their outdoor covered area. This place is begging for a bright warm day! It's awesome! I'll be returning for a pint, a pizza, and possibly some pool...

It's a pretty small place and it feels very hidden so making a reservation is probably a good idea. How it works: walk downstairs (look for the neon sign that says "sshhh!") and GENTLY press the pig head on your left at the bottom to open the secret door. Our server was a gem and helped us navigate the extensive craft cocktail menu-I LOVED THE "breakfast of champions " and my wife enjoyed the noonin which was a bit of a riff on a margarita. We started with the creamy burratta with grilled pears and bread-heavenly and so fresh. For mains I got the pasta with beef and onions(yum!), but the standout was the braised short ribs with creamy mashed potatoes-amazing! -and at €30 a fantastic value. In fact everything was very reasonably priced and cocktails were only €15 each. Out entire bill was just €120-at least 50% less than a comparable meal at a quality restaurant in the US. Highly recommended (shhh!)

What to do after that? Our answer was to hit a cocktail bar. We didn't have a reservation, but they told us if we were quick (like an hour or less), we could be seated. (They had a rez afterwards.) We only wanted a round, so that was fine by us. I was on a refreshing cocktail kick so I got the noinin. On the menu it was listed as "Dublin's Best Margarita 2018" so I had to try. It was what I was craving. Slightly tart, not too sweet, etc. Tho I prefer a lil more spirit forward. But it was a good drink to have after pours of whiskey earlier. Vibe is boisterous. Decor is a little cave like. Walking thru an italian resto was in the spirit it being a speakeasy. Glad we stopped by. REVIEW #4115

You are instantly drawn to it and the live music you can hear coming from the inside, I visited on a Tuesday at about 1pm and the place was packed. We could not initially find a place to sit. You are not greeted as you walk in and there is no one to check in with to get a table. You are on your own scavenger hunt for a place to sit. We were lucky and stalked someone that was just leaving so we were able to sit. We also had to quickly figure out that there is a QR code with a table number next to it to order your drinks and food. I ordered The Irish Mint and my aunt had the Old Fashioned. We also had a toastie for a snack. The Irish Mint and Old Fashioned were very good - probably the best drinks we had during our Ireland trip. They were strong and had good flavor. The 2 drinks came out to about $38 euros, so pricier than the average pub in Dublin. The Toastie was delish! It was double stacked, had a good amount of cheese, was full of flavor, and had a nice crispy to it too. The sauces was also good and complemented the flavors of the toastie, The pickle was extra good. I was not expecting to have such a good toastie, but I was pleasantly surprised. The pub atmosphere was fun. The live music was back to back. One musician finished up and another 2 were setting up. People sang along to the music and made it feel very lively. The decor was very festive with lots and lots of Christmas decorations all over the bar, particularly in the ceiling. Overall, we had a good experience. The restaurant was vibey and fun. The food and drinks are delicious. The prices are much higher than your average pub. My biggest issue was not being greeted or helped to get table.

We managed to check into our hotel, have breakfast, and now hit up temple bar. (We were trying to help our friend kill time until it was time for him to check into his VRBO.) I did not get an itemized receipt, but our total charge ended up being 44.65 euro. (Not sure if this included tip.) I believe the pour was probably redbreast. Since it was early, it was pretty chill and empty. There was still live music. We sat a a high top and had one round. Our server was patient and sweet. I knew what I wanted, but I think it took a while for the rest in my party to decide. Vibe might have been different later in the day, but it was as expected for a gloomy morning. REVIEW #4111
