Finally I made it to The Workmans Club and it was for fabulous cabaret show. Joined to Bison Bar, we fuelled up on some BBQ before we made our way up and then back down to the venue. It wasn't terribly busy, so going to the bar was quick. She was a nice lass too, serving. I also like style of the front bar: red walls, B&W tiled floor, candles and an open fire place. Full of character. Inside the venue most of the seats had been reserved, but we managed to find some spare seats down the back, to the side. And we enjoyed the show. Good sound system. The Ladies were grand. Very rough around the edges decor wise, as is usual with music venues bogs. But there was toilet seats and loo roll, which is a lot better than most venues I've experienced. I've done a couple of visits to the Workman's Club now. Both times visited their Craic Den comedy club. The bar is rough around the edges, but a decent place to come for some drinks (food is not an option, so far as I know). There is a small billiards table and a couple of fussball tables. A large smoking patio on the upper floor. The comedy club is a classic small space that has been carved out of a couple of rooms. Though the quality of the talent is a bit entry-level (for €12.50 you're not getting Dave Chapelle), by the 2nd half of the sets they are consistently decent. The predictable crowd-work that characterizes the host's performance indicates that few locals come here, nestled, as it is, on the River Liffey, just upstream of the heart of Temple Bar. Drinks are basic but serviceable, though they sometimes run out of basics on their menu. Staff are friendly, in spite of being endlessly put upon by tides of tourists. read more

The first stop on the pub crawl that I did through one of the tour groups, the beer was cheap and the place got very crowded from 7:30 through until we left at around 8:30. I can't say that I was very impressed with it. It was very dense with cigarette smoke and the background music was very loud. Shouting loud. The queue for the bar was a disorganized cluster. Some tables and some seating but lots of standing room. But they do have food. read more

What a cool place! We went upstairs for a few quiet early week pints. It's very big and I can imagine that it's packed at the weekends as its also a live music venue. There is an open fire - score! The Guinness was OK, bit too fast on the pulling or maybe I was a bit slow that day. All you smokers out there, there is a very impressive smoking area. All you friends of smokers out there, there is a place that you can breathe, be warm and still talk to your friends (I'm usually left alone as my friends run out to smoke their fags). All you cigar smokers like me, maybe you should have a table to yourself, sadly not everyone likes the smell of cigars. Very funky lightening and designs going on in a Berlin type of way as in squat not superb and perfectly portioned interior design. Downstairs is a larger bar which also looks warm and fun. Possibly my favourite spot in dublin. I adore the workmans club! They have great music, the occasional fantastic act, an unreal atmosphere and the drinks selection are affordable and all are tasty! Especially the Long Island ice tea. The staff are super friendly and nice and there is always a great buzz about the workmans. My favourite part of the building has to be the smoking area which has a new burger joint built in along with a really awesome decor that is crazy colourful and bright and the open roof is ideal for a sunny evening. I would urge people to visit this place as its a hidden gem in Dublin City Centre! read more

SERVICE IS EVERYTHING. I ordered a drink from a lovely lad in a "man bun" It was captain and orange. Once receiving the drink I seen it was and orange Fanta mix. I can not drink anything with carbonation since it makes me sick. I assumed orange juice. I asked if possible if I could please swap it out. He said rudely, no- you ordered it so drink it otherwise you have to pay for another drink. I was shocked. Once he ran the card I told him how my friend and i were bartenders in the US and would've really taken care of him. His friend with a beard came to his defense and Said well your in Ireland not the US. I was in shock. I said clearly ! He told me to go back to the US again. Wow. A place of business- this is how you loose money. I will happily take my self back to the US where business continues to grow in our bars because of the way we treat people. Pretty cool music venue. Went here early for a gig at 9:00pm. The downstairs is actually a decent size for a concert. The sound is very good and has a professional set up. The decor is set up as if you are sitting in someones house from 30 years ago but it works well here. After the concert we went upstairs- Again you fee like you are walking through someones home with open fireplaces and old doorways/ stairs. There is a really large beer garden but I tend to avoid as I am not a smoker. By 11:30pm the crowd was still pretty light but just after mid night it got pretty crowded. I have been to this place several times and I now have enough background to catch the spirit of the workman's ! This is actually one of my favorite spots in Dublin, especially the patio on the top floor which has recently been redecorated with catchy colors (see photos) We usually go there between friends after work on Thursday and Friday to get a table in the patio and a fresh beer. In the summertime it is actually pretty pleasant to get the last hours of light around there. The mood is totally different (but still nice though) if you go later to party all night. The place get crowded and the music is pretty loud but good vibes :) The bar is on several floors, in an old hotel I guess with fireplaces and wood everywhere ! You can definitely let your freak flag fly here! We were referred to this location on a Sunday night after everything had already closed. We got $5 pints of beer and hung out while listening to 80s music. People here aren't afraid to dance and there really is a diverse crowd of mixed races, gay people, straight people, people on drugs, drunk people, and people just there for music. My friend and I really enjoyed the laid back vibe and the music, it is a judgement free zone and you can dance however you like! Great place to cut loose! read more

What is it about the current "too cool to be clean" trend? I guess it goes back to the age-old 'try hard not to look try-hard', most likely popular on some level throughout time. Except in the 80s. And Egyptian times. I was inaugurated into the Workman's Club for the first time on Saturday night and I must say I quite enjoyed myself. The venue is pretty inconspicuous from the outside, and in fact even when you get past the front door, you're faced with a bit of a gloomy interior, and a ratty looking stairs right in front of you. Take the stairs my friends. Do it. It will lead you to a wonderland of room after room of coolness, and stairs after stairs of randomness. There are a few bars dotted around the place. Drinks are pretty good value for the centre of town - 7 eurits for a Jameson & coke, and the same price for house cocktails like mojitos (which are very good incidentally). There is a huge smoking room outside, and a couple of other smaller rooms which make you feel like you're drinking in a house party rather than a bar. Continue on another stairs downwards, and you are brought back out to the Bison Bar - whiskey and horse riding saddles of course - or back into the first ground floor bar with band room. Why the three not four stars? It's free in most of the time which is great. One point. But the toilets are really gross. Deduct one point. Cheap booze. One point. Not many tables / places to park your booze. Deduct a point. The good points equal the bad points. And the bad points equal the good points. There's nothing really bad about this place, but equally there's nothing that makes me wanna line up my next Saturday night around it. Fairly perfect three ya see! read more

I booked the No9 Bar on the first floor for my birthday party back in April. Vinnie was very friendly, very responsive and told me everything I needed to know, which is better than other venues I had contacted (I'm looking at you, Whelans Parlour Room). The space is rather large and comes with full bar with 2 staff but just a few seats in a corner. It looked a bit empty too be honest, but this soon changed. They keep it private until 11pm then open the door to all punters. Bonus points: it comes with its own loo, and access to the smoking area, which means you don't lose your friends in that maze of a place. Music is always to my liking so kudos on that. The bar area on the first floor turns into a dance floor which is always cool. Happy with the experience, would definitely use the space again. read more

A sizeable music venue with various sized rooms for gigs and other performances. Visited there to see Codes as part of the 10 Days in Dublin festival. The main room was great with very good acoustics and air-conditioned (!!) - you can almost hear the sigh of relief from everyone who walked in! The other parts of the club do look a bit run down - but then I was judging it in the full glare and harshness of the summer sun. The outdoor smoking area is a nice touch though. It has the same vibe as the Grand Social but somehow the GS trumps it, by as much as a pint of Hoegaarden (which the Workman doesn't serve) ;-) read more

Oh Workman's... so much potential! Firstly, I love the location and the venue: right by the Quay but far enough from Temple Bar to not get huge, touristy crowds! This club is seriously just an old apartment building where someone took a hammer to some walls, I love it! I am into electronic and indie music so I am no stranger to these hip and cool places but Workman's takes the freaking cake... I was there for a drink with friends and it was absolutely FREEZING in there (no heating) but still there were girls in crop tops and mesh dresses sipping on their imported beer. I had my jacket on the whole time and only stared in admiration. The bouncers must really just be an art performance at this point: Think of all the stereotypes of rude and unfair 6 foot guys in black clothing, power tripping... Yep, that's the two airheads at the door of Workman's alright. Ridiculous. My favourite part of my first and last evening here was that we were there at 10 on a Sunday and some random ass DJ came in and started basting his music when it was CLEARLY just people in there looking to have a drink and a chat. It's such a shame because this could be the right combination of modern and raggedy if people in there were not busy being too cool. So eventually I went back (kind of unavoidable), which only made me sure that the 2 star rating suited the Workman's perfectly. Doormen are still riding the power trip and I've noticed it's nothing personal, they just randomly use their power for evil, sometimes barring perfectly normal people for no good reason. Not that this helps because, once you go inside, the place is rammed anyway. There's hardly space for even standing, and trying to order at the bar is just a hellish experience. Unless you stay downstairs, where the music is an insufferably boring commercial pop mix, which makes most people stay away. Upstairs the music isn't brilliant either, again commercial but pop-rock. People just end up choosing the lesser evil and also congregate in or around the smoking area. However, like I said in my previous review, I know there's some potential there, and especially if you avoid the peak times (weekend nights) you'll probably enjoy it a bit more, so I'll leave it a two stars review, even though I would only give it one for the late night experience. read more

I was initiated to the "Workman's" (if you add Club after that, you haven't been initiated proper) last night. I always it was probably too cool for people like me and when I saw the two door attendants (is that the right name these days to not anger those guys?) blocking the entrance I thought I might be right. Turns out these guys were actually alright with ordinary guys like me popping in for a round or two. The different rooms offer slightly different vibes - like a house party where you can chill out in different areas but overall the theme is consistent. We had our first drink in the packed bar upstairs (packed but the staff was surprisingly good-natured) before moving outside into smoker territory (packed, packed) then visiting other parts (not packed) to end up downstairs again where -surprise- a generous dancehall (there is no other word for a space that dates back to those kind of days). Even enjoyed a bit of a dance to some choons and the odd classic (Depeche Mode, Enjoy the silence!). Overall - cool factor is pretty high. Poser count: low. Ideal for a stopover, a drink or the entire night. read more

There are some pubs in Ireland that seem to have been around forever and yet never seem to have that many customers. This is certainly the impression that I get from The Workman's Club... I know there's a function room and there's usually a crowd on the ground floor, but for some reason, the best area of the place is hardly every populated beyond maybe 30% capacity. Yeah, I said it, I like pubs where you can hold a conversation without having to strain, break and generally mistreat your vocal chords. I like the fact that the smoking area has this somewhat surreal thing going on with all the doors nailed to it. I like that the barfolk there pour your drinks with due care and dilligence. I like this place in general! Interesting fact! There's a tour company called Sandemans (I think that's how you spell it) who do a big aul' touristy pub crawl. The first night I came here I decided to join it and it was quite a merry time indeed! So there's 2 reasons to go. 1. It's a really cool place that's never too packed 2. Have taken off one star for the ladies loos as they were in short supply and one was clogged by midnight and was never fixed. When I booked my ticket to Dublin, I couldn't wait to see "Lake Street Dive" at the Workman's Club. I didn't know what to expect, but it was the perfect down-to-earth setting for the jazzy show we had that night. The entrance faces a flight of stairs and a hallway that both lead to a bar; plenty of chances to order that pint or cocktail. Upstairs has a great outdoor area for chilling and smoking. The joint is decorated with wooden tones and the lighting is mainly from strung up Christmas bulbs ('twas the season) so the venue is pretty dark. Turning to the doorway on the left of the entrance is the performance space, waiting room, and yet another bar. There are a few red, button-tufted couches for lounging. The bathroom downstairs is spacious and has come cool graffiti-esque art on the walls - nice touch. The performance room is appropriately size and intimate to where the crowd and musicians can get personal. The Workman's Club was a great venue with the right amount of bar surface area (a lot). It's right in front of the river so it's easy to locate. Many cute restaurants in the neighborhood for dinner before a show. My night was definitely made and I had a great experience in Dublin! read more

Good environment, quirky design, nice outdoor area, good service good drinks. I have seen a couple of bands here, the Brad Pitt Light Orchestra being one, and it is a good music venue. The prices are Temple Bar prices. If I have friends from out of town who are into the kind of vibe this place offers then this is where we go as it is the best of its kind. It's a bit too trendy for me to be honest. This place will always hold a place in my heart as it once had possibly the most amusing graffiti I've ever seen. Over one of the toilets was written 'Ministry of Magic, this way' and an arrow pointing down. I laughed for days. Moving on, I get that electricity is expensive but I didn't have my glasses and was in fear of tripping every time I left my seat. Why does it have to be so dark? The bar is well stocked and the bar staff nice. I like the general vibe though people seem to sit in little cliques and stare at each other than have good conversations. Most recently I was there and there were open fires, which I'm all for, but they were nowhere near where the seats were and had people crowded around them (again, heating the place wouldn't be *that* expensive.) Also, we were there to see a particular DJ who should have been on at 9 but when we left for last bus she hadn't started yet, it wasn't like we were paying but still. Overall a nice place, I've been early evening and prefer it to the later evening vibe. It wouldn't be my first choice though, especially with The Bison Bar just opened next to it, way cosier! read more

I was here for a gig as part of 10 nights in Dublin, a lovely surprise thrown at me by Timmy! It had been a while since I stepped foot in The Workman's and if I'm honest not much has changed, this is a great place to keep in your back pocket if you'd like an alternative night out. The smoking area is large and kinda cool with loads of old doors hung up around all the walls and my favourite place in the building would be the 'hip living room' set up upstairs, having been to a friends photography exhibit in that space I can attest it's very versatile and pleasant to be in on a sunny afternoon! This time out we were in the venue to the back of the downstairs bar. Seating may be a bit sparse but the sound is of high quality and the venue is a nice medium size, definitely a contender for the seemingly ever growing mid-size venue list in Dublin, though it still hasn't taken over my personal favourite The Grand Social. Pints were reasonable priced at about €5,50 for a tiger and the cocktail list, for those that lean in that direction, seemed to cover all the usuals and a house special or two at decent prices! read more

I'm going to caveat this review by saying this applies to Sunday Nights in the Workmans Club, and Sunday nights only. Usually not a fan of this place. With it's hipster crowd and shabby chic vibe, it's just a bit try-hard on a regular night, not to mention jammers with bouncers who seem to rub every second punter up the wrong way! Not to be misconstrued - they just have a penchant for really annoying a lot of people I've spoken to and I have witnessed a few incidents myself. That said, Sunday nights here are class! If you like a light hearted atmosphere with a decent - but not packed to the rafters - crowd, it's a great spot. A chilled out drink in Bison Bar, followed by a dance in the neighbouring Workmans Club is a failsafe good night. On Sundays, the music is cheesy (think Guilty Pleasures) and downstairs has some of the worst, and therefore most hilarious, karaoke I have ever experienced. Definitly a place to try in Dublin. Looks like a flat where everybody can come and order drinks. You can go near the fireplace to enjoy a drink during cold winter time. Update - Bouncer problem gettin worse avoid avoid avoid!!! Love the music! Nice people and free in.. what more could you ask for? Couple of issues though: The bouncers are way too aggressive for the type of place it is. No need for it and it puts a downer on the night when you have someone pushing his nose up against you and eyeballing you to see if you're suitable to get in. For fecks sake Chill Out Lads.. jaysus. The second problem the toilets are bad. You can see the the owners make no attempt to invest in them. A couple of hundred euro would make a big difference. When all's said and done the workmans is a great spot. The beatiful and undeniably cool Claire Beck on the decks is worth running the bouncer/toilet gauntlet. read more

I used to go often about one year ago to the workmans. The place is grate: large smoking area, music, decoration... But I'm not happy with the security guys. Around two or tree weeks ago, I went to the workmans with a friend of mine and the security man didn't let us in because we didn't tell him hello, he said, that's a lie. I asked for the manager and he was very friendly with us and we could get in finally. Also, last Thursday, my cousin from barcelona came to visit me and I showed him a few pubs that I consider my favourites in dublin. When we got to workmans around 1:15 am, the same security man was there with an other one with black skin. He didn't. Let us in but this time with no reason and in a very rude way. The other security man didn't help, he got the same behave.... After that, I don't think that I am going back, at least for a while. read more

I like the Workman's. I generally like the music in the Workman's. I like to end a night dancing at the Workman's. I like the fact that there are different levels and different rooms playing different types of music. I even like the dingy decor even though a door fell on me once while I was there... true story. What I don't like is having to fight through a six people deep queue at the bar in order to get served. read more

Pretty cool. - Purple walls and paintings of random nude women are pretty bad. + Great space and lots of room for private venues. - Space is pretty dirty - ignorance of your filthy surroundings will truly be bliss at night as opposed to experiencing this dive in broad day light. + Nice spot on the river. Upper rooms overlook the Liffey. - Bathrooms have no soap, are co-ed, and should be cleaner. + Bison Bar is downstairs if you get hungry for really good eats + Great music! I didn't write a review for this place after the first time I went because I was just sure that I had had a bad night. I'll just say that the first time I came in here the place was jam packed. It was nearly impossible to get out of the main doorway into any of the rooms, upstairs, down to the bathrooms, anywhere at all. The whole place stank of sweat and body odor, but not in that kind of cool way some places are; if that makes any sense to any of you. After a lot of shoving we were able to get a drink, but then couldn't really move anywhere else and left a while later. The reason this place gets 4 stars is because I've gone again and had a great time. The place wasn't too overly packed. It had some rooms that were full of people and there were other places to go that were a little less crowded. The smoking area is a pretty good place upstairs, and there are bars absolutely everywhere in the building. The music played here is great compared to a lot of the clubs around that play the same old dance remix to some pop song or whatever. You know what I'm talking about: it's nice, but it's not always what you want. The drink specials were pretty decent for a Friday, and my friends and I all had a great night chatting, dancing and everything else you'd do on a night out. First night here last night. Very impressed and will definitely be going back. Was out for Arthur's day and ended up here. Think Thursday is a bit of a students night usually but irrelevant really as would normally be visiting this type of establishment at the weekend! Really big cool venue with lots of different rooms so you don't get bored too quickly. Good drinks deals too. We all ended up drinking the Havana special which is basically rum and ginger ale. I love workman's club, it has been one of my favourite since I lived in Dublin. There is always some new bands playing downstairs, if you like new indie bands, this is a place, on the first floor you have a nice view to the Liffey river, another bar, and a cool smoke area outside. They have normally promotion in cocktails, beers, etc. When the band finished playing downstairs, the music starts, and people dance. Of course it depends on the music you like, you won't listen there pop music, you will definitely listen culture band, bands who make a chance in the music history, not bands who produce hits and make money, if you like this music please do not go, but if you like real and cool music in a cool place workman's club is the place to go in. read more

Racism. Quite simply, shocking. A group of us arrived at the door and they allowed all of us except one , the obviously ethnically diverse looking one. We heard the doorman making a racist comment to the manager in his ear piece, which he assumed we didn't overhear. He said we could all go in except 'that one' who he pointed at with a sneer. Obviously, we refused to give them our custom and went round the corner to another venue, where we had a great time. No thanks to the workman. Yuck. read more

Love this place. Have been many times since I moved to Ireland from France and have brought my friends when they come visit. If you want see amazing music of all diff types (sometimes bands, DJs, house, disco, indie rock) come here. Nice staff and cool Twin Peaks feel to the decor. There is a cool chill out area that is 70s themed upstairs. The smoking area is huge, open but not too cold, you can also get AMAZING burgers here if you go early. Cocktails are cheap and simple but something more upmarket for a higher price would be good. The toilets upstairs could do with a little refurbishment. Management were super helpful when I enquired about reserving an area and then lost my jacket later. (I got it back) Door staff changed recently I think and are very friendly guys who have a good joke with you at the door. I'd like to give them more than three stars as I really like this place, it is a cool layout with multiple floors, a nice outside deck for smoking and in a good location. But they have a similar problem to a few other pubs in Dublin and that is the bouncers. A bouncers job is pretty simple, prevent people who are too drunk from getting in, kicking out people who are too drunk, and to break up fights. So last weekend when I was there with some friends and the bouncer was starting fights with people to the point that we had to call over another bouncer to calm him down that's a problem! read more

This is easily my favourite club in Dublin. I love the atmosphere and all of the cool smaller rooms that they have hidden upstairs. The crowd is generally on the younger side and a bit alternative - I've had great conversations almost every time I've been in the smoking room and have met some genuinely interesting people in there. The drinks are nothing special, but prices are pretty standard/reasonable for the area. The vibe and crowd are really what's great about this place. I've never had a problem at the door, though I have seen some altercations - usually involving large groups trying to get in later in the evening or people too visibly intoxicated. The place is nice itself, music can be too trendy personally, but it is one of the best places of the Dublin. This weekend when I was going out from the place because it was closing I heard one of the security guys asking to a client if he was RETARDED because he wanted to come back inside with his friends.. They don't have any kind of respect for their client, in any other places he would get fired for this behavior (imagine a waiter, or any other job in front of the public calling retarded to a client) As always what we do reflects what we are, and in this case it seems that they are not the "most intelligent" people either...One client less read more
