One of the best pubs around town with a big beer garden! Have been here on many occasions more for lunch so it hasn't been too packed. I guess that would change when the sun goes down. Food is pretty good, although last time i went they seemed to be heavy handed on the salt! Great atmosphere and a good selection of wines.

We ended up eating here for a company lunch and so glad we did. The crowd is usually chill during the weekday...though can get a little more poppin' towards the last afternoon. I had the Sirloin + Polenta Chips and loved it. I'm a big fan of polenta so I couldn't pass up the chance to munch on them. The sirloin was cooked to order and pretty much melted in your mouth. Complimented with some decent wine the meal was great. The outdoor seating is great and has a very laid back feel to it. The bar towards the outside can get packed at times, so make sure to sneak up to the front bar as it's usually quite slow.

Gentrification, regeneration, complete super-model out of the skeleton of a yesteryear transvestite are just some thoughts to explain the transformation that occurred thanks to the insight of Justin Hemmes who bought this fine building, and gave it life again. You have a sense of urgency and delight at the realisation that this old brick brewery turned trattoria is one of the most popular bars in Sydney. The Beresfords' popularity is nothing of an accident. This place has been thought out meticulously, from the shinny green tiles that coat the exterior, to the selection of beer mugs, and layout of the humble but enchanting beer garden outside. It's a place that keeps on giving, such as it's newly opened 'Upstairs at the Beresford' which is a bar turned club - it goes off with some great live acts on the weekend. So if you're in the mood for some of the tastiest pub food Sydney has to offer - seriously, I'm not joking - the pizza's and pasta's are all hand-made, wood fire style. Or if you'd prefer to sip on a strawberry infused champaign, dance in a night club, or enjoy the game with your mates, the Beresford is your new local.

The Beresford Hotel has one of the best beer gardens of Sydney's pubs. Unfortunately, they kick you out it before 11pm. Whether it's for an afternoon cider or a pre-party beverage, this courtyard has a fantastic ambience. The only problem with this is that the whole of Sydney seems to know it, meaning that finding a place to sit is a hard task and, depending on the night, finding a place to stand can be just as difficult. The beer garden is filled with heaps of greenery and, matched with stained glass and beautiful green tiles, it's somewhat evocative of a greenhouse, and makes for a fresh and sunny outdoor alternative. Come 10.30pm bouncers urge you inside and the crowds are distributed between the ground floor bar and the upstairs nightclub when the courtyard closes at 11pm. The weekend line up for the bar closest to the courtyard (ground level) is always long, but if you make the walk to the front bar you should find shorter lines (I feel like I may be giving away too much here). The upstairs bar hosts live acts until 10pm most weekends, morphing into a nightclub with a quick spin of a metaphorical record. Some of the live acts the Beresford scores are actually quite good, but don't worry if you get there and the act's a bit of a dud because the dancing beats come in soon after - although I can't promise that these tunes are going to be any better. In any case, the bartenders upstairs aren't too hard to look at, and when your ears have been disappointed, the least you can do is satisfy your eyes. One of the less impressive features of the Beresford is that there are only 2 ATMs in the venue - one on the third level in the nightclub and one on the first level in the semi-unisex bathrooms. This means that lines for the ATMs are excruciatingly long on Friday and Saturday nights, and if you're lining up downstairs it's safe to say that you will be waiting in the middle of the bathrooms. Whilst this is clearly not the nicest place to be stuck in line, the communal nature of the washbasins is an entertaining distraction to your wait, and watching people (male and female alike) priss and prune themselves in front of the mirrors is as good as any short film. If you're having a bender, The Beresford closes at 1am and thus doesn't make for a great all-night venue. But the absence of a cover charge places it pretty highly in my regard, and as it's a close walk to Oxford St, if you feel the need to carry on past 1 you can simply pick up your jacket from the cloak room on the ground level and make your way there.

I'm not ashamed to say that I was introduced to this place by a bunch of English tourists - they knew more about this hotel than I've known in my lifetime in Sydney. In my defence, I'm not particularly schooled in clubbing/drinking areas in Surry Hills but still I was glad to be escorted around for a change. Of course, if you want to skip the massive line that forms post 10pm, it's usually best to follow the 'first in, best dressed' code and take advantage of happy hour from 8pm. I was quite surprised at the venue - the outside green, scale-like tile does everything to hide what's inside. The inside decor is quite classy with its muted colours and dim lighting, and rather looks like a bachelor's den than it does a clubbing space. The club is owned by Merivale (owners of The Ivy etc), and you can see touches of this influence dotted around the trattoria and particularly in the lantern-lit beer garden. The lounging area Upstairs is the spot I'd like to find myself. It's tucked away in a quiet corner near a smaller, secondary bar, where you can still enjoy the beats and rhythms of a live band. They don't stay on for long - til 10ish from memory, but that's when the atmosphere tends to change and the clubbing vibe prowls in.

I did as much research online as I could about the cocktails that were made here and whether or not I'd be able to have them (allergies and dietary restrictions). Initially I went in thinking that I'd only be able to order 2 types of drinks (a margarita and a mojito) since they were both rum-based, which at the moment is the only type of spirit I can consume without having to deal with angry red splotches on my face and arms (vodka and whiskey just don't agree with my skin I suppose). But the bartender asked me what types of alcohols I preferred, so that he could make me something that I could have without worrying about substituting ingredients from certain menu items. He was able to make me 2 Sailor Jerry rums over ice and I can't quite remember what the other ingredients were, but I'm pretty sure there was cinnamon, lemon/lime juice, and something else which tasted amazing!!! I then proceeded to try the mojito, which was SO beautifully prepared, and tasted just as great as it looked. Something about lime (and mint) in drinks makes my tastebuds extra happy. And I'm not one to usually like drinks with any sort of fizz in them, but this mojito was just, I've found myself saying it a lot in this review, beautiful. And lastly the margarita. I almost felt sad drinking out of the glass because the presentation seemed so intricate and aesthetically pleasing! Again, outstanding craftmanship by the bartender. The sips I took of the drink coupled with the salted rim of the glass were an adventure. I finished the entire drink in 15 minutes (while saving a sip for my partner to try) but at no point in that time was I able to figure out what that intriguing and delicious taste combination reminded me of. It tasted so familiar yet so new to me. Fantastic. Out of all four drinks I had, I can't say that any one of them is better than the other, but the Sailor Jerry mix definitely made it's way into one of my favorite drinks I've ever had in my life, no joke. I was a bit too tipsy to properly look for the bartender who made these drinks for me, but if I could've found him I'd like to thank and compliment him on his craftmanship!

You order at one bar and then pick up your food at another. It's very DIY here, no servers. The atmosphere is very much child-friendly-pub style, with a playground and even a jump house for kids (not sure if that's always there or if we came on a good day). Lots of families were around, parents having drinks while their kids chased each other outside. The wedges we got came in a huge bowl.
