For those of us not from the inner-west, it's a real delight to discover 3 Weeds Hotel. The inner-wests best kept secret that the locals don't want you to find out about. Around since 1881, locals have known about it for yonks, but over the years it has definitely had some changes, both cosmetically and internally. It is nothing short of slick, trendy and sought after now.
I don't want to beat around the bush, it's pricey. You'll find places in the area with schooners half the price, but this is not the place to go to if you're looking for a bargain. You pay for the ambience, the artsy crowd you mingle with and the decadence.
"Award winning" will be thrown at you a lot at the pub, ignore it. Everybody likes a fine dining experience once in a while, but most of us would hardly go to a pub in search for it. Even if it is a bar that showcases such gorgeous decor as the 3 Weeds. However, if you feel the alluring pull of the award-winning restaurant too hard to resist you better get your wallet ready. Don't get me wrong, the Kobe 9+ Wagyu Rump steak and Nettle and pearl barley risotto with smoked eggplant is worth every penny, in terms of flavor but the portions leave a bit to be desired. C'mon, if you're drinking at a pub you're going to work up a hefty appetite, personally I recommend dining at the back bar bistro if you work up a hunger.
The beef bourguignon pie is a nice twist on the classic beef pie, there's also reasonably priced tapas and pizza. All classics! And classics for a reason.
Now for the drinks, the locals can't talk well enough of this bars cider. So, if you like cider...good news! However, that is not the cider which took my fancy at this establishment. It is their signature cocktails that truly distinguish it from the rest. If you wan't to sip on a cocktail like in 1955, try the Betty Draper. A combination of Maker's Mark bourbon with grapefruit bitters, soda, a touch of grapefruit juice, a few sugar cubes, garnished with a grapefruit slice and maraschino cherry. D-frickin-liscious! None of that overly sweet, fruit stuff. This drink let's you indulge in the elegant flavors of the bourbon, letting the other ingredients highlight the taste. They also have a variety of winter cocktails that are nice and heavy, will keep your insides more and lubricated against the harsh weather outside. Try a Grandma's Winter Pie or a Ripe as Cherry.
There is also an area for every mood; the wine bar, speaks for itself. The lounge is perfect for small quiet gatherings and a great place to enjoy your meal. The living room is, well, anybody's dream living room. Colorful, comfy and leads to the outdoor smoking area and games room.
Unfortunately the bar closes at midnight and 10pm on Sundays. So if you're looking for a big night you'll have to look elsewhere. On the plus side, happy hour prices until 7pm daily! That leaves plenty of time to pop in after work. Oh and check out the website for daily and monthly events, there is always something on. read more
