This place was pretty packed, but then again that is something that I havethree literally come to expect when you go out to pubs on a Friday night in Sydney. Actually, it was pretty late when I landed up here, so this isn't the after work crowd, this is the 'avoid the city like the plague due to the lockout laws' crowd. Went here for a late lunch on the weekend. We sat at a table out front, which was nice in the sunshine. The food was pretty good, but took an oddly long time to make. Their poke bowl and burger were good, but the food from their "specials" menu was mediocre. They had a good wine selection, so that was nice. Would I go back again? Yes, if it was someone's suggestion. But I wouldn't actively try to make plans to go back. read more

The clock hotel is great for hosting birthday parties or gatherings. Just make sure you call in advance to book an area - it gets really packed on the weekends. The food is yummier than your typical bar food and they've got happy hours starting from 5pm so you can grab some drinks to go with the nibbles. :) read more

Great hotel for drinks to watch the footy. It's always packed, no matter what time of the day, but even more so on Friday and Sat evenings. A big screen, wide selection of beers and some pokies if your heart desires. There are a few areas to hang out in upstairs too. We got a tomato and mozzarella pizza which had six slices of pizza, wasn't the best but with beers, so ok I guess. Second dish was calamari but just the frozen type type, that are deep fried. Surry Hills seems to be a very cool place to hang out in Sydney. Sydney Siders really talk it up when the subject of cool bars, cafes and restaurants comes up. The Clock Bar is definitely one of the Surry Hills centre pieces. It is iconic by sheer virtue of its distinguishing name and feature. Its position is also smack bang in the middle of everything on Crown Street. The big question is... does it live up to its high profile billing? The answer is a resounding YES. Its a lovely place for drinks, a bite or just to meet and hang out. its big too. Downstairs is a typical pub feel with sports screens and big bar. Its upstairs though, where the true soul of this place comes out. A wrap around balcony overlooking crown Street makes Clock Bar special. Nothing better than sinking a few with your mates, watching the world go by. It also encourages interaction with others as the balcony is fairly narrow so your constantly rubbing shoulders with all and sundry. Not sure if its still on the go, but they had an innovative alternative to Happy Hour. You get one roll of 2 dice and if you get a double - hey presto, whatever you've just ordered is free! not bad if its your shout and you've just ordered 4 or 5 drinks.... Great spot for people watching and afternoon drinks up on the balcony. Nice vibe early but can get pretty noisy and loud later on in the evening. Huge kudos to staff at the bar- I am 37 weeks pregnant and they went to so much effort to make me a fun mocktail! It was very good too :) Space is well thought out to handle noise and different groups of patrons. Ah the Clock. The very first time I set foot in this establishment was on New Years Day. The clientele was well dressed and I instantly noticed the age separation from downstairs to upstairs. If I were to make a guess based purely on observation, I would say the downstairs hosts those aged between 30-40, while the upstairs crowd are the suit and tie clad 20-somethings. The huge wrap around balcony is perfect for watching the people of colorful Surry Hills as the sun sets. In more recent times, I tend to frequent the upstairs on a Friday night where the Clock offers a $10 cocktail happy hour between 5 and 6 (but don't try and get creative, they will make only what's on their tailored list). The thin crust pizzas are also delicious and reasonably priced when compared to its fancy Crown Street competitors. In all, the Clock is a solid place with an enticing crowd. The Clock is one of those great big pubs that offers all things to all people. And spilt across four levels there's plenty on offer. From the function rooms downstairs to the huge main bar, the sports bar and then the cocktail lounge and balcony bar upstairs, you'd be hard pressed not to find something you like. Although surprisingly given the amount of space you will find it tough to get a table or a seat on a Friday or Saturday night. For me it has to be a seat on the balcony for a Cocktail or two on a balmy summer's evening. Get there for Happy Hour at 5pm and it's even better. Also the king prawn spaghetti was lacking flavor, we visited on a Tuesday so we got our entrees half off (BOGO). I wouldn't pay for price for any entree on the menu. As a US Ex-Pat I am still not adjusted to the booze prices at Sydney bars, but this place made up for it with such swanky indoor booth seating that was so conducive to an intimate, fun drinking experience. The outdoor deck reminds me of New Orleans in that you could sit outside on the patio and kick back and watch the people on the street, cocktail in hand, a part of the scene but not actually involved just spectating. read more

I love this bar on the weekends! It's a great place to just have a few drinks and chill out with friends. It's great when the weather is warm because you can hang out on the second floor wrap around balcony, and can be really cozy inside when the weather gets colder. I haven't had any food here yet but I'm sure it's great given the massive amounts of pre booked parties they have here on the weekends. HELL YES!!!! My favorite bar by far this last trip to Sydney. Great bar, playing great music with a great crowd in a great part of town, I peaked drink-wise in Sydney and knew it was not going to get better....and it didn't. Partly because I was smashed after 6 hours of drinking and after a few beers here began my walk of shame back to my hotel. I popped into a few other places but nothing came even close to The Clock. It oozes cool but in an understated, unpretentious way. The staff are really friendly and the patrons were a little more sophisticated and mature for the most part. The BEST part of the bar is the balcony overlooking the street a GREAT place to chill out and watch the street below. Serena Q is right in that it is like New Orleans sans the abundant frivolously exposed breasts and drunken revelers vomiting in the street (I was not able to find three-for-one drink specials anywhere in Sydney) GREAT bar to knock back a few and people watch. read more

This a good pub for three reasons: 1. I live opposite it, so it is from a drunk-crawling distance from home. Like the bouncer can literally toss me on my doorstep. But I guess you aren't feeling to concerned by this point. Hater. Sorry. 2. There is always a spot for you to chill without feeling oppressed by the crowd - Anzac Day and Melbourne Cup day excepted. They have different room, all of them with a nice vibe and without too much of that distinctive pub smell/feel. 3. Overall a dissatisfying experience. I'll start with the positives. They had a good assortment of drinks, especially the whisky bar. Not too expensive and tasty. However the biggest reason this place is a one star is due completely to the level of food and service offered. A 50+ minute wait (yes it was busy) for bellow mediocre food. The prices are high and the quality worse than back end pub food. The portions are small and thank God because who ever made them failed simple high school food tech. There was no flavour to be found in the plate. It must be a disaster in the kitchen. And if you think I'm being unfair, I've dined twice at the clock and always left more than disappointed. The Clock is mainly a massive sports bar in Crown Street. It's big, serves a large menu uncharacteristically for Surry Hills, very normal, and undoubtably designed to adhere to as many taste buds as possible. The bar doesn't have the character that you look for in a cosy establishment, and feels like it's been lift out of a country town, up-ed it's prices on the flight over the Nullarbor, and set down with some new large screen TV's in Surry. I only really go there when a big game is on, so drinking with some mates casually is left to more boutique establishments. I like it, I just don't love it. I prefer the courtyard and the outside balcony that wraps around the building. I usually go for the on-tap ciders, but occasionally I will enjoy their wine selection. The cocktail list is a bit different to what you might expect so if you have a favourite that is not on the list just ask and they'll oblige (Well they did this time!). Working in the industry for 8 years I give every venue a chance, after 50 minutes of waiting I enquired after my Tuesday Lunch Special $10 Steak Burger. Apparently, when a man verbally abuses a woman, she's meant to move elsewhere for the sake of conflict resolution and reinforce negative behaviour. Did you know huge pub tables are fully private? And if someone calls you names and tells you to gtfo, you're meant to curtsy and slink away? The bouncer who first claimed to be the manager sure did, until we made it clear that this mansplained f-ery wouldn't end it. The real manager, who received the same day long online course in conflict resolution is the reason why this is being reviewed here and elsewhere. After he's done reviewing the videos of the feral creature, perhaps he'll turn back time and give him a firm talking to. I have allergies that limit me from eating quite a few items, so I simply asked for a little extra slaw in place of fries with my chicken burger. They refused to give me anything in exchange for the fries. $18 for a chicken burger with no side is heinous, but I accepted it in the interest of not being a pest in front of friends. Once the meal came out I could only laugh at the definition of a chicken "burger." There was no ground chicken meat at all. It was a thin slice of chicken meat topped with slaw that was really just iceberg lettuce. I rarely write one-star reviews. Maybe my standards are too high for Sydney. I hope that's not the case. Thin, crispy and deliciously rustic. Try pancetta, mushrooms, artichokes, olives, white anchovy ($16) or purists, go the margherita with buffalo mozzarella and basil ($15). Clock on for happy hour 6 to 7pm Monday to Saturday and imbibe as many cocktails as humanly possible in the space of 60 minutes. My pick for summer is the Senorita - frozen margarita with a double scoop of homemade strawberry and basil sorbet shaken with 1800 blanco tequila, cointreau & fresh citrus.
