This pub was the first place we visited on arriving in Sydney. It was great to hang out in while adjusting to the city and the jet lag. It also was the first place I tried my new favorite beer of ginger beer by Brookvale Union. Thursday lunchtime small crowd, 30 minutes to deliver a hamburger which tasted like it may have been made from one of the monkeys.

Three of us showed up at 10 pm after work on a not too busy night and ordered a round of beers. After the first one, one of my coworkers returned to the bar for another round. The bartender refused to sell him the beers because he was acting drunk and was staggering. After one beer he clearly wasn't. We just sat at our table while we drank our beers and had a normal conversation. The manager even agreed with the bartender. After he returned empty handed, the manager showed up and told us that we could order more beers in 10 minutes. The whole thing was a little weird. I don't know what kind of training the workers get, but it appears to be done poorly. We left and don't plan on ever returning. read more

This place is what it is. A backpackers joint. But this review is based purely on mine and a friend's experience on Friday night. Having been to a couple places prior, we weren't sober but we weren't exactly on a different planet! So we were let in with no problems and allowed to pay the $10 entry (for one thing, that's ridiculous!) and as we walked in, we could see them watching us the whole way, then we walked up to the 2nd level bar, still being watched and followed and then just as we reached the bar, the bouncer decided that we'd had our money's worth and told us to leave. For one thing, charging $10 to get into a pub, and a bad pub at that, is totally unacceptable. Secondly, if you think someone is too drunk to come into a venue, then the law states you don't let them in - I'm pretty sure it doesn't state, let them pay the entrance fee, follow them to the bar and kick them out. This certainly doesn't do anything for the reputation of bouncers, which isn't exactly brilliant anyway! So bit of advice, there are plenty of bars in Sydney, so if you're thinking of going here, just look in any other direction and you'll find somewhere better! read more

Five stars for what Ive felt so far about this place. I went in in a Tuesday afternoon because I was so attracted by the three monkey statutes. It was quite empty because I came at 3pm and somehow felt like having the atmosphere of an café instead. Grabbed a cold beer, i sat by the windows to read my book and also be able to watch the inner Sydney's busy street. It all just felt right. Well, so muh for a bar scene! Had a good experience at the bar. The servers were really nice and recommended a few different beers for my wife and I. They even knew how to properly pour a Guinness and it was excellent. We also ordered some apps and the food was surprisingly great for a bar. Everything was very fresh and came out perfect and had good flavors. Okay, I haven't been here when it has been really pumping, but it is still one of my favourite bars in Sydney. I guess it has something to do with the three monkeys that happen to be above the door (I suspect this may have something to do with what the building used to be, as opposed to what it is now, but I am not hugely familiar with Sydney's history). The bar itself has a couple of levels, and after about 9:00 pm it turns into a pumping night-club (actually I might have been here once when that was happening). I found the bouncers here it be very accomodating, and nowhere near as intimidating as some of the other places, which is probably why I really like this bar. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. This is quite a fitting motto for a pub in the manner of, "What happens in Vegas..." Three Wise Monkeys is by no means as exciting or glamorous as the esteemed Strip but I do like their tri-simian motif. I generally avoid George St like the Plague, especially on weekend nights, but if a film, gig or transit forces me into the city I'll sometimes pop in here for a pizza and a drink. The large high wooden tables are comfortable and non-imposing and it's the sort of bar you can go to on your own and not be bothered by derro men. A margarita pizza is $8 and you can pay extra to add toppings or just stick with the base. I of course add chilli flakes and for pub pizza it's really good- served on a wooden pizza board and dripping with cheese, I can eat a whole one on my own and not need to eat for a long time after! The crowd here tends to be suits during the week or just "normal" people meeting up before going out, it's a little more sophisticated than most of the places on dive-y George St and they have a nice selection of tap beer. read more

The atmosphere was loud, fun and everybody was there enjoying their time. The bar has amazing cocktail jugs for $30 which go onto happy hour at 7 PM. I would drink here again. read more

The bar may be open until 4 a.m. on weeknights, but if you're hungry, better get here before the kitchen closes. We made it just in time, having just learned on our very first night in Sydney that restaurants don't stay open as late as we're used to. I guess we looked bedraggled, dazed, and confused enough after 15 hours on a plane, and told the bouncer at the door that it may be Tuesday, but it was still Sunday for us and we needed to eat, that he took pity on us and let us cut the line, making it in time before the pots and pans were stowed for the night. Oh, maybe it's because, let's face it, we're O-L-D, and he wouldn't want his mother to stand in line for an hour. Having been to pubs in London, we figured out pretty quickly that you go order and pay at the bar, shlep your own drinks to the table, then wait till a runner brings your food. Table? We were lucky to squeeze into two seats at a pub sorta table near the bar, wedging between two guys obviously just from work and a bunch of overly loud girls on the prowl. The noise was deafening, the room warm despite the chilly temps outside, but the schnitzels we ordered were delicious. This despite the sticker shock, which turned out to be quite reasonable after we discovered that schnitzel is the de facto national pub food of Australia (they must have confused themselves with Austria), and we never saw it at such a low price again. We also discovered that cider is very big in Oz, and since I'm not a beer drinker, I was a happy camper. Hubby had a pint of something. I've been to Sydney several times and I always try to stop by this bar. I am not really sure, maybe its because of its mascots or I just keep hoping that things will change, I think the problem lies in that from the street this bar seems a bit more classy than what it is: your average backpacker bar. Really it boasts way too many power drinkers for its own good. Sure bars are meant to be loud and fun, but whenever, I'm there I feel like I slumming in a college bar on $1 beer night. The fact that my Sydney friends stay clear of this spot tells me that a true bar lovers time would be better spent elsewhere...really a shame though, because I think it has a lot of potential. read more

Cool pub, stayed in the area for 5 nights and the 3 wise monkeys got kinda my local :) very relaxed and friendly, central and every night with a live band. The bands are good, mainly rock orientated. If you wanna party, you can head upstairs, if you are just up for a chat, stay downstairs. They even have a casino style corner where you can gamble if you are up for that! Good thing they have no cover charge before 10 and are open late, around 4am! read more

Because we started downstairs for one or 2 beers and then the pubs gots noisy... Upstairs played a Band very good mix between rock and pop. I liked that! I went during the day about 2 pm and definitely a business mans location during the day, which I don't mind at all, and it make sense why; drinks are cold, food is good, and plenty of option on tap. I got a buffalo prosciutto pizza and watermelon sangria. The bar tender was very accommodating and polite, excellent service! And the sangria is my new favorite, I want to drink it all summer long! I am from Connecticut, USA, and we're known for pizza so it wasn't my favorite but it was the best I've had around sydney so far. My husband, myself and a friend were looking for a quiet place in the city to eat an early dinner with our baby, Three Wise Monkeys was almost empty so we walked in. We ordered a round of drinks, one of which tasted extremely flat and/or stale and sat down at a pair of sofas. After an hour, security suddenly came over and told us that no one under 18 was allowed and that we had to leave immediately without finishing our drinks. Needless to say we never got to try the food, but the establishment next door had a better menu, with better value and we all had delicious meals there. It seems the security is really bad at their job because we went unnoticed for an hour. It is worth noting that our baby was being well behaved and no one in our group was causing a disturbance of any kind. If a venue does not allow children it really ought to be a bit more transparent about it. I would also recommend that they start changing their beer kegs before they go rank. read more

This was my Fave pub I went to when in Oz. The pub is set over many levels each with it own unique vibe. The ground floor is your traditional Pub, nice and laid back. From the outset I knew that the Three Wise Monkeys was pretty dingy so my expectations were low. It's a joint full of backpackers and geriactrics - not really my kind of thing. My experience last Saturday eve. We popped into to the 3 Wise Monkey's because an Irish friend of mine wanted to visit her fellow irish friends who frequent the joint. We were charged $5 entry to visit the joint (for a pub of this calibre, any kind of cover charge is expensive). We ordered 4 jagerbombs, $12.50 each. However, they were not jagerbombs. What we got was an inch of redbull with a shot of jager poured in. If I wanted a jager-redbull I would have asked for one. We queried the bartender and she informed us that there were no shots after 12am and that's all she could do. This was fine (though paying $12.50, we would have preferred to have known this beforehand). However, right next to us, the Manager 'Tom' was serving jagerbombs correctly to some other patrons. We found this unfair, so we asked to speak to Tom, who quite agressively informed me that it was the 'same thing' and was quick to call me arrogant. He also felt it was important to educate me about the hospitality business of which he deduced I had no experience (actually have 6 years, 2 years management). What we experienced was a manager who was too proud to admit that he did the wrong thing by serving shots to other customers after 12am. He tried to find excuses, passing the blame to us and his staff. We would have been happy with him admitting that he wasn't meant to or a replacement of our drinks. All we were asking for is, what we initially asked for.... Instead he spent 45 mins, dicking around, ignoring us. Please note that we were 100% sober and he knew this. He finally agreed to give us our money back on the condition that we left (we had no intention of staying in such a dive). Please note, the issue here is NOT the overpriced, excuse for a jagerbomb but the complete arrogance, lack of respect and lack of service that we experienced from poor management. Is it too much to expect a little customer service when you head out for a drink? Apparently for 'Tom' it is. We took our money elsewhere; Oxford Art Factory. Better crowd, nice staff and proper jagerbombs for $9 each. I don't care if he thought I was being particular, that is NO WAY to treat your customers. That's why Tom's managing the 3 Wise Monkey's on a Saturday night. Highlight of his career. Good luck to you. read more

I really enjoyed this pub while I was in Sydney for 5 weeks. Oh my lord, potato wedges with sour creme and spicy sweet and sour sauce (I guess they are an Aussie thing because they were on multiple menus). Love it! I will miss these when I go home. The service was really decent and the building was beautiful. It used to be an bank. I love the windows, especially when warm enough to open and sit by them. Other food was good too, but your typical Aussie standard pub fare. I enjoy the happy hour crowd better mainly because it gets so busy and this building was not originally a bar. This place is a fun place to go out . . . it's fairly laid back and theres lots of levels and space depending on what you want . . the music on the top floor was good for dancing and the place was pretty full but there wasn't a long line at any of the bars . . . the lower floors are a little more pub style for just sitting and talking. This is a good pub to visit in Sydney as you're strolling along George. They have a good selection of beers and drinks, small ones and large ones... depending on how thirsty you are. Three Wise Monkeys is a Sydney institution; located conveniently on George Street close to Town Hall station, a good time is always had at the Three Wise Monkeys. The food is good honest pub grub - chicken schnitzels and steaks rule the food chain here. Drinks are quite cheap as this part of town tends to be, and while it'll never be the greatest wine you've ever tasted, all the old favourites are well represented on the menu. The venue is HUGE, taking up the better part of a two-storey building. On any given weekday afternoon, it's filled with corporate types relaxing after work, while weekends are dominated by backpackers and students. It's got a good vibe, happy staff and is a nice spot for a few drinks with friends. My favourite thing about the Three Wise Monkeys, however, is the monkeys themselves. No matter the event - Melbourne Cup, Rugby League Grand Finals, The Olympics - the monkeys that sit above the door are dressed for the occasion! read more

Fun place! The better half and I checked this place out on the day we moved to Sydney. We were trying to stay awake and thought a couple pints and a lively atmosphere might help, and we just happened to wander into this one. Sure enough, we had a lot of fun that first day, and have been back a few times since. The staff is friendly, they place hockey!! And baseball on the countless tellys, and there's lots of space to tuck into a quiet corner or sit by the windows and people watch.
