Ahhh the Hotel CBD. Just in case you didn't know the type of establishment you were in, and its location.
My last visit here went something like this...
A group of people from work were upstairs having a few bevvies and a bunch of us tagged along to join the fun post work.
On arrival solo I grabbed a drink downstairs and waited for my crew to join. There was no room to do anything but stand, but I managed to find a good spot to the side of the service area that seemed ok to wait.
A guy my age then approached me, with a single-minded objective, and he wasn't looking to pick-up.
He said hello then asked me what I do for a living, I responded and he rolled his eyes like I'd said I clean the elephant enclosure at the Zoo. His next response was straight to the point "How's being stupid working for you?". I laughed it off and said it's doing just fine, and that dumb people have all the fun because they have no idea on what they are missing out on.
He had a few other choice abusive comments to make, but he had the wrong bait on the line to lure this fish in.
He gave up on the elusive trout and decided for a more straight forward target. When a bartender kindly asked him if he would like a drink, he spat some abusive comment at her, which because of the din, neither her or I could make out... She brushed it off and asked him what he wanted. He spat another abusive comment, and she said "beer?, bourbon?" he flicked his arm in a dismissive gesture and she shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly and went and served someone else.
Not sure whether he was a big shot in the place or not but that sort of clientelle sums up the hotel CBD. Populated by drunken suits and people caught up in their own self-loving/loathing, abusing anyone or anything that doesn't conform to their requirements.
With the Mojo next door, and a short hop to any of a half doz other brill small bars, I don't know why anyone would ever need to come here, ever again... read more
