The door to find in the alley!

Palmer and Company is a gem of a "Speakeasy" type cocktail establishment in the heart of Sydney's historic downtown. A nondescript door on a back alley leads to a stairway that ends in the foyer of the bar. One more door leads you into a 1920s vibe, with barmen mixing drinks and flapper waitresses buzzing around the domed basement establishment. The drinks are imaginative, very well crafted, and delicious! Food overings are simple, but well made. My wife and I shared the cheese board and mixed olives. Both were excellent and used Australian products. Palmer and Co. Is worth tracking down when in Sydney!

Palmer & Co is a elegant speakeasy in the heart of it Sydney. The entrance is fun to find and it's a cool feeling walking down the stairs for the first time like you're uncovering a secret hideout. It gets busy, so try your best to get there right at opening or just make a reservation. The drinks are sophisticated and delicious, created and served to you by knowledgeable bartenders. For a classy cocktail in The Rocks, I recommend this joint.

Fun speakeasy, crazy expensive and the bartenders were not nice, and seemed bothered by the crowd of the evening. Only stayed for 1 drink. $60 for two old fashioned - definitely a cool environment.

Speakeasy decor with essential European antique exterior style. This place was something one can envision in a movie place when having dark drinks in a cellar seemingly. Loving' the vibes and treasure the drinks!

I love, love, love Palmer & Co. Everything about it is over the top, but in all the right ways: the European-esque alleyway you walk through to get to the door, the decor, the drink menu, the fact that the servers are all dressed like it's 1922, I adore it all. I've been here a handful of times, in fact I come here every time I'm in Sydney, and it never disappoints. The drink menu rotates but always has unique gems. This is an absolute MUST on your Sydney list!

We lovvvvvvved this bar!!!!! Came here because one of the only places open late on a Sunday. The vibe and ambiance in here is killer!! Place is massive and one of the coolest speakeasys I've ever been to. Sad I couldn't pick this place up and take it with me back to Murcia. One of the best grilled cheeses I've ever had and we had a solid cheese board. Droooooooool.

When I asked a couple of concierge at Park Hyatt Sydney where their favorite bars were, they all said "Palmer & Co." I guess I had to visit then! Came here before dinner to have some drinks. Their entrance is tucked in the little alley...I was told it was a hidden entrance for VIP when it was a previous bar. Anyhow, as others described, the whole theme is about 1920s - from the decor, servers' attire, etc. Had Hollywood Sour and new Champaigne Cocktail - they were both good. The bartenders are very professional and polite which we don't often see in LA (ha!) I actually enjoyed watching how they were making cocktails - they were very serious! Too bad, they did not have this place when I lived the next door, otherwise I am sure I would have come here very often. Now I am a few thousand miles away...

Another really good "hidden" Sydney bar, though not as hidden as some. Prohibition speakeasy style downstairs in Abercrombie Lane. Nice roaring 20s vibe and well concocted cocktail menu. Also, had a lovely (and large!) charcuterie and cheese plate. Pros: Vibe, food and cocktail menu items Cons: A little on the noisy side, and the bartender struggled with drinks that were off the menu. Overall, pretty good, though.

wow wow wow! what a super special treat! a friend, the mister and I had dinner at Mr Wong (upstairs)....had plans for a few days already.....earlier in the day I was at the opera bar and mentioned my dinner plans to the bartender. He gave me the tip to ask about the bar under Mr. Wong. after a fabulous dinner...our server escorted us to an unmarked door, which was an elevator leading us into this fabulous speakeasy! wow! it was amazing! staff was all dressed in appropriate prohibition outfits... the drink menu was also very good... i opted to tell the bartender what i liked and didn't like...and he whipped out a fabulous cocktail! I wish my body had room for a 2nd drink...but it didn't (after a full day of fun in Sydney)....i sipped the drink slowly and did a lap around the bar to check it out. it was crowded and it was unusually loud ...but it was still quite fabulous I'm not sure what is considered expensive for drinks in Sydney...but it was along the lines of a great bar downtown San Diego or Los Angeles...so about $15 (US) for a drink. ...which i'm ok with for a craft cocktail of this caliber (not for a vodka soda) doubt i'll ever be so lucky to return to Sydney, but if i do...Mr Wong/Palmer & Co. will be a repeat visit for me. .... in the mean time...you go enjoy it for me and let me know how you liked it

It's interesting how no matter where in the world you are - London, New York, Portland, SIngapore, Sydney - at this very moment, cool has universally been unlocked and defined as 1. hidden bars, with 2. exposed, natural materials and Incandescent light bulbs, serving 3. classic cocktails and re-worked gourmet dude food by 4. bow-tied and vested barhands who are channelling the 1920s. Palmer & Co. is clearly following this formula, tucked away in Sydney's old aquaduct system, and has added an extra slice of cool with its very own charcuterie window. Low lights, hot bodies, strong drinks, cheese platters. If this is the stuff your "cool" is made of, get here immediately.

    Coaster light!, Palmer & Co.

I'm pretty sure we would have missed it if a gorgeous flapper wasn't at the entrance down a hidden alleyway.

Being close to where I used to work, I'd frequent this place quite a bit, and before it was a PJs it was a mates fave city pub so we'd catch up over a few here from time to time. There's a pretty good mix of people in the street-level bar, and PJs have converted it into more of a sports bar so there are plenty of screens for the sports nuts to check out their favourite teams prospects. PJs typically have pretty good fare. In winter they have two absolute cracking dishes. The Guiness Pie with mushy peas, and their signature lamb shanks which is totally unctuous. Why such a modest score? Price kills the place. It's not one of the cheaper places to get a beer as someone incorrectly states in their tips, it's easily one of the most expensive places to get a beer. You're paying over the top prices for domestic tap beer. A cheap beer is $5 for a Coopers Pale Ale, which you can get on the same street about 200m up the road... Also... As much as I enjoy a good pokie section, this one ain't good. And by that I mean the clientelle. It brings in the undesireable types, and sours what is otherwise a sweet pub. The snug, the downstairs den, has a great looking bar, and "snug" seating, but it's kinda pointless down there. It doesn't feel snug, it feels stuffy and claustrophobic - and the bar has never been manned when I've been down there. Now, if they moved the pokies to the snug, and then opened up the entire bar at the street-level to include the room vacated by the pokie section, you'd have something. But why would they do that when they can get by with what they have.

Being in the city, it can get quite busy very quickly and is a decently sized basement multi-storied pub. TV screens are usually are usually playing Fox sports or something similar. I order the Parmy, just to be on the the safe side. I wasn't too game to try the Pie which is supposed to be one of the best (as judged by Irish people I work with) around. The food is carefully prepared and you can tell the produce is quality and they've cooked it properly which some pubs sometimes struggle to do consistently... The chips were the standout side, crisp and crunchy! Definitely will be trying the stew or pie, that is if I'm brave enough to.
