Very cute bar space. Reminds me of going to a friend's apartments. Except there is mad couch space. I opted for their own wine blend, which was amazing. So saunter down the alley way and, if it's nice outside, you are going to partake of table service whilst you enjoy the buzz of the banter from the other tables. There's your dartboard... over there... and it comes with rules... so beware: - 338 countdown - No drinks in hand - One thrower at a time (dartist, not thrower, surely?) - The winner stays on And the biggie... Throw a dart at anything but the dartboard - Throw yourself out! Also take note of the candles in a bottle which have been allowed to flow and congeal over previous waxes creating new melting moulds. I used to do this with old liquor bottles. It is the coolest! The service is friendly, and the inside is a lil snazzy. If you had a date you could bring them here, and if you don't? come make some new friends :) They have red Peroni's, the direct import kind not the stuff brewed in Sydney and passed off as an import. Seems like a very nice after work chillout bar with a nice selection of cocktails (probably the best time to go is on a Monday/Tuesday). If you're into bars like Grasshopper, then you should definitely check this out as it has the same vibe, and on a side note, the minimum spend for credit cards is $15 or 1 cocktail, so you get to spend less than grasshopper if you just want one drink. The food isn't too bad too, recommended to try the guacamole - which was recommended by one of the bartenders. read more

Very cool pub in the city. Came here on a Friday night and tried to grab a table outside. We had to wait until 530 to sit outside but the staff was really cool about it and told us he'd get us a table. The cocktails are pretty good, food is tasty and service is top notch. I had one of the strangest conversations as I didn't know this was the name of the bar, and I couldn't understand why my mate was sure he left me on Kent - it was a few drinks into the night, and the logic just wasn't there. I'm sure that's why they chose that name - it's memorable for the stories it makes. On a quiet city street on Friday night, this was the only place with more than a dozen people in it at the time, and although not too busy, it had a warm and old school charm to it. The cobblestone footpath that the bar uses as it's alley way with tables, shapes into a larger enclosed courtyard shadowed by sandstone buildings. It's a speakeasy for sure - as if you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't. I wouldn't liked to see some more cocktails, or some beer on tap, but I wasn't too fussed by my Peroni. Next time I'll take a dip into the cocktails for sure. read more

We were having a quiet one last night and this bar is the perfect place for it. Since I Left You is the smallest bar I've been in, with the entrance via an alley on Kent St. There aren't many patrons in there due to the size and location, but its a nice little bar where you can hear yourself talk. This is keeping in line with the location, which is pretty quiet in the evening as its not a hotspot for bar activity. My friend and I had a few cocktails, however they were very watered down...I couldn't hardly taste any alcohol in my "Honey Pot" cocktail but it was pleasant to drink. Although there weren't any outside seating this particular night, my friend tells me that the place is usually more happening when they put out tables in the alleyway. I could imagine this to be a nice little spot in summer for an after-work drink before hitting central CBD, Kings X or elsewhere. read more

Yeah, so this is my kinda joint. Makes me feel like I'm in another century, a cross between A) a sly Prohibition-era booze den where men with pomaded hair and moustaches and vests and hobnail boots glanced at one another slyly from slitted eyes and sipped their drinks with one eye on the front door and one foot out the back, and B), some medieval Three Musketeers-type inn, where a stinking drunk Gerard Depardieu with a big ridiculous hat with many feathered plumes in it spills wine from a big ol' pewter goblet and tries to balance three bawdy serving wenches on each knee and fight The Man In The Iron Mask and King Longshanks and The Sheriff of Nottingham. That may seem evocative and fanciful but once you've spent a night in the cobbled sandstone alley leading to the re-purposed loading dock out back, seen your shadow soar along the low tunnel courtesy of the many clusters of giant, dripping Victorian-style candles and experienced the attentive service of Messrs Nick, Elvis & co, you'll see that I'm, like, totally not crazy. read more

Since I Left You is definitely on the list of: "Bars I Will Not Attempt to Get Into on a Friday or Saturday Night Because They Are Just Too Damn Busy". Wait, I haven't written that list yet. But I will! Promise. People flock here because it's a great bar, and it combines four excellent features together: historic building, a laneway, a courtyard, and small indoor intimate space. Basically, it has the works. The service is generous and accommodating (helping you move around chairs and tables, and moving the heaters closer during winter). The wines are excellent and the lighting is flattering. It's classy without being snooty. It's not like the more "divey" small bars of Redfern and Glebe; this place gets a bit more of an after-work crowd. Like, I would even take my mother here if she really wanted a drink. But I'd rather not. Urban legend has it that this bar is only half named after the old Avalanches song. It is also named after a genuine, real break-up. So the legend says, anyway ... read more

Semi-hidden bar down an alley, with a large room inside and lots of seating space outside in the alley and the back interior courtyard. Fairly flashy and modern, with a shiny bar and cocktails and beers and a wine list. Service is good. It's the sort of place that would undoubtedly be so busy as to be impenetrable on a Thursday or Friday night. I was here on a Tuesday and it was fine. Overall I'd rate this an average 3 stars. It's nice enough, but is a little too *nice* for me to call it a fave. Those who like a bit more style will like it more. But what easily bumps it up to 4 stars for me are what I can only assume are *crack-infused* cheese toasties. Honestly, these are not just sandwiches. They are toasty slabs of gooey goodness, parcels of semi-liquid dairy gold with smoked beef bullets of bliss. After a couple of drinks you couold not find anything better to munch on. Cut into sandwich soldier slices they lasted about 2.3 seconds each on the tables of our Yelp Elite event last night. Though at $12 each I might be a little more measured if I was splashing out for them myself. read more

11.30pm call last night and a 10.30pm call tonight. How am I going to stay awake for this? What's this work colleagues? Let's go for a drink? I probably shouldn't buuuut ok. Just the one. And that, kids, is how I lost my job. Just kidding but I definitely underestimated the lure of Since I Left You. This gritty, industrial oasis in the back alleys of Kent Street with its soothing candle light makes even the people you have to stare at all day look attractive. I started with the daily special cocktail. Strawberries are in season so this week is strawberry week. Can't remember what it was called but it had brown rum, apricot and caramel liqueur, muddled strawberries and balsamic vinegar and the skinny maroon pants and bowler hat wearing young waiter wasn't lying when he said it had an amazing depth of flavour. SILY is my sort of small bar. You can book, food is good - particularly the guacamole and the charcuterie board, the staff are attentive and not afraid to recommend a drink for you. The only thing they could think of investing in is those things you put on top of doors to make them swing shut. The toilets are directly across from what would otherwise be the best table and it ruins the magic somewhat having to stare at that when some thoughtless patron leaves the door open after they're done. Despite that, I can definitely see this place becoming a regular haunt but not one I'll let all my colleagues in on. Just the fun ones. And as for the 10.30pm call? I was on it. I may have been nodding off, snoring and possibly dribbling, but I was there and that's all that matters. I hope I was on mute.... read more

Officially the coolest bar around. Why? Walk down the alleyway entrance off of Kent street and into the enclosed brick courtyard out back and try to tell me there's a better place in Sydney. As it's set back from Kent there isn't much city noise, and instead you feel like you're on a friend's roof or something, with fairy lights suspended above the courtyard while you're sitting on random milk crates (or if you're lucky a chair). It's just a great atmosphere and the best is that you can actually hear the person next to you unlike most bars these days in Sydney. I'll be interested to see how they make the space comfortable in the winter as the majority of the bar is outside, but if they bring in heaters and have some blankets like I'm hoping I think you'll find me glued to a seat every weekend. I didn't try any of the cocktails, but the wine was delicious and the staff super friendly. read more

Bar has an amazing vintage atmosphere. Came here with a group of coworkers after work to hang out. Ordered a lager beer and we shared a bit of appetizers -- definitely recommend the sandwiches, we got one with beef and cheese and it tasted pretty much like a savory hamburger. 'Since I left you'...sounds like the title for a memoir.... Since I Left You is another one of these Melbourne style lane-way bars, which have been popping up in Sydney over the past two years. This bar, tucked away in a cobblestone lane-way off Kent Street, is a 1920s themed Art Deco cocktail lounge. The bar is dark, slick and minimalist. The service is friendly, and the bar has an intimate feel. It's the kind of classy establishment where you can sit and chat without the need to strain your vocal cords. These days, these are the kinds of bars I am leaning towards. Of course, there is a cocktail menu. Given the Art Nouveau feel, I might have expected more of a focus on 'old school' cocktails, perhaps a Martini or a Manhattan. I would say the menu is tailored more towards the fruity, modern style of cocktails - Cosmopolitans, Margherita's.... Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that, I guess I was just expecting a menu more in line with their 'retro' feel. I do have to smirk when I notice the Cocktail Jugs on the menu! There is also a wine list and a selection of beers, as well as a food menu, offering olives, dips, antipasto and cheese plates and the like. To me, this bar is the perfect weeknight pre or post dinner option, offering a fitting beginning or end to an enjoyable evening. Only, I'll be skipping the cocktail menu and ordering a gin Martini next time. read more

"Since I Left You" wins for having one of the most emo bar names I've heard of in a while. Talk about a good place to check out right after a break-up. Ambiance: -A lane-way bar. Right down quiet Kent street - could be easy to miss if you aren't looking for it -Love it's wide, welcoming gate that opens up to a cozy outdoor seating area and courtyard -The indoor seating area itself is small with high ceilings. You'll have to arrive a bit early to grab some seats - otherwise, I feel like SILY is best enjoyed outside Drinks: -Honestly, I came here for a Yelp event and to hang out with Ben and Laura. Always a bomb diggity time -SILY seems to have a pretty straight forward cocktail list, small, not so impressive beer list, and a good selection of vino -The Sangiovese was forgetful, but I highly enjoyed trying the Tempernillo they've got. Earthy. Service: -Not bad - they checked in with us often and even offered us extra chairs for our large party Since I Left You, I've been thinking about coming back. read more

I've been keen to drop in on the smaller bars since they started popping up all around Sydney, and Since I Left You was first on the list. I was here last Wednesday night, the day before the public holiday. I braved the torrential rain and arrived at SILY just before 6pm and managed to nab one of the few remaining inside tables. The bartenders here are lovely and the biggest perk for me was that they do table service. Getting a 2nd (and 3rd and 4th, etc) drink was as easy as catching the eye of a staff member, holding up an almost-empty glass, and giving them a smile and nod. The food here was also good; I was with 2 girlfriends and we shared an antipasto plate and guacamole dip (the guacamole was to-die-for). Wine was priced at roughly $12/glass - a little on the expensive side, but the service was worth it. I'll be back! read more

Great little city hideaway bar. Lovely alternative to the typical CBD hotel, and they've got a nice wine and whisky selection. Came out here with work peeps and the place was hoppin' so we grabbed a table in the alley way (not as dodgey as it sounds, promise!) and sipped and chatted until the later hours. I'd say Since I Left you has a great vibe for smaller or larger groups, and being close to Baxter's you'll be saved from the throngs waiting shoulder to shoulder to be served at those more happenin' joints. I liked the open air but covered alley way, and thought the noise level was reasonable considering the size of the group. I have to admit I didn't browse the menu thoroughly but the wine selection was great. The bartender chose a modestly priced Shiraz for me and sent it out with glasses for the group without my asking. I am a sucker for intuitive service! Making Since I Left You one of my regular spots now, as it's ideally located for the cheeky Friday night drinks crowd. read more

Nice place for a first date. Loved the atmosphere, the plum in a hat drink was real good- tasty, hints of whiskey and choya, and served by an incredibly cute staff. My first impression of Since I Left You, was one of great surprise and it definitely has a bit of a wow factor. A cute outdoor seating area under the arched-tunnel entrance, a great Bar that is a great throw-back to something you'd see in Mad-Men. They have a good wine list, and some great tasting food on their list, but this is somewhat tempered by a very lack-lustre cocktail list. They make the classic drinks well enough, but their signature drinks leave something to be desired. Lacking both in imagination and in execution. What they lack for in Cocktails, they offer great service and a good atmosphere. defintiely one to check out after work for a glass of wine to help unwind. read more

Following a nice dinner 'round the corner, my friends decided to kick on with a drink at SILY, which had been recommended to one of us. What a pleasure it was. As others have said, it's cool and yet welcoming. After our very noisy restaurant it was nice to relax and tall without our heads having to touch over the table. I think $15 for a proper magherita is good value. I had two and I'll be back for a refill before too long. Table service was easy and prompt. Loved this place. read more

Recently in Sydney for a concert, and not quite ready to head back to the hotel (read: had a few too many drinks and launched into party mode), we ventured over to Since I Left you on the advice of the Yelp community. Expecting to have to fight our way through crowds on this Saturday evening, we were surprised to arrive here and find only a couple of tables full. Looks like the lockout laws really are killing Sydney's bar scene? The quietness of the evening worked in our favour though, as we received friendly, attentive service from the bar staff, who were happy to make suggestions and check in when we were nearing the end of our beverages. The bar itself is super cool- cosy indoor section, good for small groups or impressing a date, while we took advantage of the outdoor courtyard. I imagine on a busy night this place would go off, but despite being quiet the vibe was still good. Will definitely be back next time I'm in town. read more

Tried out this hidden gem on a Thursday night and was treated with a fantastic female singer (first found it browsing through bobbingowl.com and came for the free live music). The bartenders were friendly and helpful. The courtyard at the back has a large artist wall and fairy lights above which created fantastic ambiance. The inside looks like the kind of place that would have attracted Don Draper if he had spent time in Sydney in his 20's. One of my favourites for the fact it has a really cool outdoor area that is just a really atmospheric alleyway with seating alongside the cool Art Deco interior. LOVED this place! Loved! Our apartment was across the street, so we made our way here on election night. It was a rough night and my sis and I needed to drown our sorrows. It was also a rainy night in Sydney, so the crowds that we say the following days were not here, but a few die hard locals were. The bartenders were adorable and so was the space. There is plenty of seating along the alley in which it is situated and in the back, as well as a cozy inside space. The bartenders asked where we were from and when we said "The States" they immediately offered us a free round of tequila shots as consolation for the recent election results. Despite our sad circumstances, we had a nice time thanks to the friendly staff and the delicious drinks! When we walked past here on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, it was INCREDIBLY crowded, so we got lucky...but it definitely looked like a lot of fun! read more

The vibe is relaxed fun and the music upbeat... I specially like their outdoor seating area, which pretty much feels like you are in a party in someone's backyard! Well they had Cardhu (single malt scotch) so I was lost when I entered the bar. Getting some nods due to their toasted sandwiches (good for a winter night), this place has a good feel to it, a huge back courtyard and a tiny bar. Plus unisex toilets. Gotta love equality. Definitely my kind of bar. Tucked in a little alley, you wouldn't give it a lot of thought, but it's very different from other bars in the CBD, and you just have to go to find out why. Came here to catch up with some friends for a few drinks on a Friday night. Although there was a line when I arrived, the jovial fellow at the door actually made polite conversation with us (try finding that in Los Angeles!) and once inside, the bartenders mixed me a delicious Pimms Cup while the refrains of "Doggystyle" took me straight back to memories of my misspent youth. We sat in the laneway and downed sophisticated cocktails like true ladies before being ushered into the interior space when the hour required it. Although the inside space is quite cramped, a good vibe ensured the night ended on a high note. On a more shallow note, very good looking crowd on the night we were here. If I had my way, I'd never leave Since I Left You. Not only because it takes me back to listening to that catchy Avalanches' song on repeat in Thailand, but because it's what Sydney CBD folk have been dreaming about for so long... Joining the ranks of "thank god you're here" bars like Grasshopper, Grandma's and Stitch, Since I Left You is another well-designed spot with good drinks and great service. This place is particularly welcoming in winter when the heaters are pulled out and the guys served mulled wine by the (huge) glass full. It's packed any night on the week (why, oh why do I always go on Fridays), so expect a short wait to get in. There's a nice alley/courtyardish space out the front, or a cosier seated area inside. The cocktails are awesome too - go the Lil' Matey for vanilla vodka, peach schnapps, mandarin, lime and passionfruit. Pop in just cos the bartenders are so darn lovely. read more
