Beef and Guinness pie with garlic and leek mash
Rebecca C.

Sauntered in on an early Friday afternoon not sure if they'd be serving food but thankfully they were. Too sick to try the great looking beer selections but enjoyed my beef and guinness pie with side mash that had some lovely garlic and leeky goodness mixed in. Since you can never have enough potatoes, we got some chips with garlic aioli dip as well to share and they were great too. My partner had a done-up dog that looked tempting but hard to share so I didn't try it. Atmosphere was really relaxed, and I got a kick out of the old law books as space-fillers on the shelf behind the booths. Plenty of seating, even the beer-drinking tables had seats with backs which is a bonus I'd keep in mind when selecting a place to go out in future. The music was also really good, which is something else important to me if I'm going to spend an hour or more in one spot. Looking forward to coming back to sample some drinks soon.

Trinity Bar holds an entirely refurbished place in my heart since returning from London, as it now reminds me of my favourite bar in Camden, the oh-so-cool fifty-five (http://fiftyfivebar.co.uk/drinks.php). Whilst Trinity Bar doesn't have the amazing cocktail list that Fifty-Five boasts, nor the amazing 2-4-1 cocktail happy hour & Sunday Sesh, the bar buzzes with a similar crowd of casual-cool 20 to 30 somethings and finding a table is an equally difficult task at Trinity as at Fifty-Five, involving much lingering and sleuth behaviour. Trinity Bar doesn't completely satisfy my nostalgic Fifty-Five pangs, but it comes close. The beer garden is fantastic for people watching (if you're lucky enough to snag a table) and as it's only a short walk from Belvoir theatre, it's a great place to go for a pre-theatre drink.

In a city where the posh cocktail bars are slowly infiltrating on the ever-existing sports pubs, Trinity maintains a nice little balance of both. While you'd be hard pressed to find a day where there isn't some sort of game on the several TV screens in the main bar, the patio and boutique menu sets it ahead of its competition. With nightly specials (I have a friend who WON'T MISS a Monday $10 steak night), Trinity does pub grub right. The other day I was meeting up with a few friends for the England vs. (some other team... South Africa?) world cup game and Trinity was the chosen spot. We first chose a bottle of red from their modest menu and some wedges to accompany the booze (safely first). The wedges came piping hot and perfectly seasoned with an array of dipping sauces to choose from. Later on, we shared a BLT that on normal circumstances could have fed about 5 girls our size. It was greasy and delicious and did the trick to sober us right up. Cheers to Trinity for being a good, solid hangout.

There is not much you can say about the Trinity bar other than it hits the mark in almost every way. Upstairs, downstairs, great outside area and generous bar area that dominates the room. Now thats how a pub should be. This establishment must have one of the best locations in town. it has pride of place on the corner of Crown street and Devonshire Streets in Surry Hills. Central station is down the road and it just seems like this is a hub that seldom quietens down. Apparently the food is excellent although I haven't tried it myself. I spend more time kicking back in the front courtyard area which is perfectly positioned to watch the world go by over a few cold ones. Great for after work drinks, great for watching sport on the big screen and great for a really good pub meal. The Trinity is no dive bar. In fact, its about as classy as you get for a bar/bistro.

Trinity Bar is another great pub option if the Clock and The White Horse are full, but keep in mind that they don't take evening bookings so you might have to practise patience. Alternatively, there's also Edens Room upstairs, which is open from 6pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Sitting on the corner of Crown and Devonshire Streets, Trinity Bar offers a decent menu and a good drinks list, and has been doing so for the past 10 years. Try to nab a seat outside and watch the Surry Hills set go by - it's fantastic people watching in these parts. The food menu mixes contemporary Australian with traditional hearty pub food. The crispy prawns with roast garlic and aioli are great to nibble on and I love the Little Creatures beer-battered barramundi with chips and salad (or mash and veg) plus tartare and lemon.

The Trinity Bar is a trusty pub that you'd wish to call your local. I like this place because of the hearty pub food they serve, steaks, pies, bangers n mash and burgers are some of the typical menu items that are all served in big portions. It's a good idea to come a little early on the weekend so you can grab a good seat on their deck out the front. The Trinity also has a large range of beers on draught and drink specials during the week. They have 14 local and imported beers on tap and on Fridays and Saturdays you can also grab a schooner of little creatures pale or bright ale for $5 all day. Keep an eye out for the food specials too like the $10 sirloin steaks on Mondays. Oh and if it ever gets a little too noisy or crowded for your liking just remember to go and check out the 2nd bar and seating area upstairs called the Eden room, its usually a bit quieter.

After our first choice of restaurants was closed due to the Australia Day holiday, we wandered into this pub with two hungry small children in tow. Although they couldn't accommodate us on the main pub floor due to the kiddos, they let us eat upstairs. Husband happy wit happy hour draft choices - and the rest of us delighted with the gush taco with pineapple salsa, a huge offering of in unassembled falafel fare, and delicious squash ravioli. Kind, accommodating service and pub food that rises to level of foodie food.

Bar has a nice vibe and really friendly staff. The food was reallh tastey and they had the beat collection pf condiments I have ever seen at a pub including jerk bbq sause and jalapeno mustard. The condiment game alone jackes it up a full star. Cool joint. Check it out.

Aside from the ideal location, the food isn't bad either - and by Surry Hills standards it's rather affordable.

It was a brilliant experience. The staff were really nice - pleasant, knowledgeable on product offerings and really relaxed. I got the 'come to the dark side' flight, which was all reds. I asked her to pour me a little less because I was driving and it comes out around 2 glasses in total. I asked her to pour me half of each and pour a full one of 'the best one.' After a long deliberation (she told me) she poured the shiraz as the full glass. I had always thought I didn't like shiraz. Well I was wrong - now I do! I will always remember that this was the place that taught me. My friend ordered a different flight that had whites and reds, and also a cheese pairing for the flight - they match each cheese to a wine. I tried all of hers and all her cheeses. Really liked the majority even though bubbles and certain types of white aren't as much my jam. Really great place and good value for money. A nice, classy experience without being intimidating or pretentious. I'd love to come back here again - and next time I'd make sure I wasn't driving. IT'S ON!!

The Larder is a beautifully arranged store full of gorgeously packaged products that will have you wondering whether you're buying something just for its pretty jar or for the actual product itself. It does make for handy gift shopping though (whose mum doesn't love a block of French chocolate or Blue Mountains handcrafted coffee?). They stock a really great range of Australian and international cheeses, Hunter Valley olive oil by the litre, and top brands like Christine Manfield, Byron Bay Chilli Co and Toby's Estate. If you're on your way to a dinner party or BBQ and need to take along a token offering, grab a loaf of Brasserie sourdough or a cheese platter. The specialty grocer store opened after the owners returned from France and realised how difficult it is to find all the quality local and imported products you wanr in the one place. Once inside the cheese room, to the left is a cheese counter and the rest of the room is filled with bottles of wine. This could be considered heaven for some and probably is. There is a nicely set dining room to the right, where you can enjoy your selections in sophisticated comfort. The staff are very attentive, filling your water glass and providing great service. The GPO cheese room has a large selection of wine from many regions around the world, much like their cheese offerings. We browsed the menu trying to decide what to order, a difficult task considering everything they have to offer. Do we pick a couple of different types of cheese, burgers, antipasto, a cheese and wine flight or a main? Nope, we spot that they have fondue on the menu, something you do not come across too often in Sydney. This is something that appeals to my Swiss roots. We select a nice glass of pinot and sip away, in anticipation for the brie coulommiers and truffle fondue to arrive. The fondue hits the table, the flame is lit and the cheese melts, turning into a bowl of liquid goodness. The fondue set was very impressive, consisting of a large platter containing a selection of cured meat, potatoes, bread, crackers, pickled figs and grilled garlic prawns. The fondue forks were kept busy as we were selecting items to pass through that decadent mix of cheese and truffle, transforming each item into a mass flavour infusion. At $56 between two, it is great value. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the GPO cheese room, set up in the historic post office building at the bottom of Martin Place. With a great selection of cheese and wine at a good price, this place is now on our radar and one we recomnend you add to your list.
