There are pokies in the main area and a sectioned off smoking area with machines also. Smokers will understand just how amazing this is. Honestly, I'm unsure if this is the norm here as I live in Qld but I was tickled pink. Aside from that the layout is what you would expect from a club of this kind but it was pleasantly clean. If I could give any feedback I would suggest upgrading the hand dryers in the unisex bathroom as it takes a long time to dry your hands. As everything is in the one room - toilet, basin and dryer - it makes me feel as though I'm in the toilet for a suspicious length of time... As others have said, they do seem to cater to smokers, but we were able to find a spot that was pretty much smoke free in the courtyard. It was quite busy as we arrive about 5:30 and there were a lot of locals that appeared to have just gotten off work and were enjoying drinks. It is near/in the CBD close to the train station. They have copper beer tanks which are supposed to be filled with fresh Carlton Draught beer directly from the brewery. I tried it, and it didn't seem to maker the beer any better. Maybe it does taste different, but I could not tell. They did have a good beer selection overall. What seems to be somewhat typical in the area, we ordered at the bar, and were give a buzzer to let us know when our food was ready. We then went and picked it up from the counter along with utensils. We had the Crispy Skin Pork Belly and the Crab ravioli Both were very tasty and exceeded our expectations. PJs typically have pretty good fare. In winter they have two absolute cracking dishes. The Guiness Pie with mushy peas, and their signature lamb shanks which is totally unctuous. Why such a modest score? Price kills the place. It's not one of the cheaper places to get a beer as someone incorrectly states in their tips, it's easily one of the most expensive places to get a beer. You're paying over the top prices for domestic tap beer. A cheap beer is $5 for a Coopers Pale Ale, which you can get on the same street about 200m up the road... Also... As much as I enjoy a good pokie section, this one ain't good. And by that I mean the clientelle. It brings in the undesireable types, and sours what is otherwise a sweet pub. The snug, the downstairs den, has a great looking bar, and "snug" seating, but it's kinda pointless down there. It doesn't feel snug, it feels stuffy and claustrophobic - and the bar has never been manned when I've been down there. Now, if they moved the pokies to the snug, and then opened up the entire bar at the street-level to include the room vacated by the pokie section, you'd have something. Do NOT misjudge a man's desire for his beer! The pizza was boring and bland at first and by some weird turn of events improved in flavour ten fold by the end. I'm boiling it down to the rate I was drinking my beer. My wife's Linguine Gamberi was perfect, just the way she likes it. After dinner we ordered desert. Two servings of churros (although one shared would have suited us). They were great; hazelnut ice-cream, hot chocolate syrup for dunking and a strawberry. Paying the bill was a disaster. (Info. about Dooley's members: During your birthday month you are awarded 2000 reward points which you can put towards your meal, 2000 points = $20 off. However you can ONLY use them during your birthday month otherwise they expire). The staff member didn't use our points and we ended up paying full (members) price. We didn't realise until we were walking towards the exit, so we did a 180 and talked to another staff member who came to the register. We explained what had happened and he in turn tried to convince us that the points last until the end of the financial year. This is only true for regular points earned - trust us, we found out the hard way. So he had to input our whole order into the machine, refund it back onto the card, redo our whole order again and then added the discount. There was no "sorry for the inconvenience" or "sorry for the wait." I'm saying that that day was just a bad roll of the dice for us. This felt invalid because I don't go this joint enough to justify bothering to becoming a member. Nor is this club even remotely interesting or decent enough to either. The food or atmosphere is not worth to even bother with the amount of time and money wasted trying to get in. The customer service was pitiful, honestly I get through Australian customs better than this and I have trouble with AU customs. I don't recommend this place before or after I experience bad service.
