While in Sydney, my friend, curious about Sunday Roast (a dish we Americans had never tried), discovered the Glebe Hotel. The pub has an old-school charm at the entrance but opens up to a brighter, more modern dining area in the back with plenty of natural light. My friend ordered the Sunday Roast and enjoyed it, while I opted for the fish and chips, which were decent but not particularly memorable. Overall, it was a good experience, but I wouldn't return--now that we've tried Sunday Roast, and there are better fish and chips options in Sydney. read more

As you are probably aware, I'm not really a big fan of these really fancy pubs, probably because I tend to feel out of place. Look, I probably would like to give this place a higher score and all that, but in reality, the fanciness of the place did get to me a bit. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night via a 50% off on food through Dimmi. Even though it looks like a regular bar when you walk in, it's actually a fancy restaurant at the back. We were definitely under-dressed! (dont wear your flip flops!) Service was good, our waitress was really friendly. As we sat upstairs, she didnt check on us much, which is fine once we placed our dinner order. The calamari was YUM! There was a little kick to it , which i love. The spanner crab linguini was good as well, just a little too much heavy cream for my liking but delicious. Overall, everything was good, just overpriced for what the portion size. read more

For somewhere that calls itself a Youth Hotel, it's very grown up! It has the feel of a British gastro-pub and upon closer inspection of the various food-stuffs being brought out, it does a good impression of one too! Then I see the prices and realise it IS a British gastro-pub! To be fair the food looked pretty damn good (and they do offer $10 meals on Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes), but there wasn't time to eat, so I just had to make do with cider ($7.50 for a schooner (!!)). The pub itself gives the impression that it would be a good winter pub...lots of wood panelling - and possibly a fire place, but I may have imagined that - and wooden seats, plus a couple of leather couches. All it was missing was an old man propping up the bar with a dog lying next to him (although maybe he'd finished up for the day). Upstairs, they have the Nude Bar - I'm not sure if that's an invitation or just a name - which is mainly used for functions, but is also open to the general public at certain times. If you're in the area and you're bored of the array of hipster/indie bars on offer, then get yourself to the AYH for a proper beer drinking location! read more

This is one of those pubs you remember being something that it isn't now. I know this is a fairly common thing in the ever evolving world of Sydney Pub life,.. and I should know because lord knows what a lush I am, but I think it's a vast disparity between the first and latest version here. There was a time it was a "youth" hotel, as in, if you were a povo uni student you might get on down here for a cheap student priced feed. et maintenant? It's serving tasting plates that have Beef Tatare on them. Quails' egg and goats cheese what nots, and various other particularly high brow samplings. It seems out of place, My Friend ordered this for us to share.. I tried a few. As Tatare goes, I think your average pub goer is gonna leave that one on the plate as most of my friends did. even for me with my 'Tosser' style tastes, It wasn't especially tasty, as I believe a tatare oughta be. I mean heck you're essentially eating sashimi cow, it needs a Flava! Another mate had the Pork belly. It was small. Maybe it was an Entree. I had a burger. It was all together was too big for me to eat even after 6 hours of playing cricket in the sun. It also had some nice thick cut and very tasty chips. Again with the wooden board plate thing! . I just couldn't go on. I haven't had much luck with burgers lately. ( I think Mary's in Newtown has spoiled me for any other to be fair ) Pizza is your best bet here. The Margarita with anchovies was a winner. It's a medium size, and even if you are a starvin marvin you'll be happy with the size ( just eat the whole dangthing yourself) Eat the Pizza. Fish and chips go alright too. I reckon if you stick with Bistro favourites if you're drinking in the front bar you're on a better wicket here. They are trying very hard to be top shelf, but when you've had 6 pints..(and you will because this place is full of Irish Drinkers, and dems ta rules) , let's just say it's Grease lightning you want, and they do a tickety-boo boozers selection. After all it is a Pub. They just don't seem to separate the Menu for booze hounds in the front, from the Menu for diners new to the place, who have come for the upmarket stuff. Hello! Hello AYH! You smell the same, you look the same downstairs and up yet your menu has changed dramatically. It must be the behind the scene changes. Or in the kitchen. Either way your bloody new menu rocked my world. It did. We went for a friends 40th here and we took over the entire courtyard. They also managed to supply most of us with a beautiful Sunday roast... except me. I had the lamb and couscous salad with pumpkin and feta. It was divine. So very yum. Although I still forget how much couscous is filling after the fact, I think all couscous dishes should come with a warning. Stomach will expand in the next hour until you feel like you're about to implode! But it was so very yummy! The lamb was moist and tender and I didn't talk during my meal. That tells you how yummy it is. We also had some onion rings, like honest to goodness proper onion rings. Exactly like the ones you get in the states. I was so very happy!!! The seating outside in the courtyard is really nice, there's lower and upper area. Lower area used for more smoking and we had the upper courtyard with tables. Staff were lovely and got the food right the first time around. Would I go back? Hell yes! Do they still do the games in the upper level? I hope so, more pubs need board games. I went here for dinner last night and all I can say is YUM!!! I was in the area and looked up good eating places close by and from the previous reviews I was excited to try this out. When I first walked in I was a bit surprised as it was completely dead and didn't look like a very exciting place to eat at but we were starving so decided to stay and try it out rather than finding somewhere a bit busier. We were both pleasantly surprised with our meals and it was way better than expected! We both order the Sunday roast option which was $22 and came with yorkshire pudding, broccolini, duck fat potatoes, gravy and meat. Ahhh I'm just drooling thinking about it now! Everything on the dishes was so tasty and it probably one of the best roast meals I have ever eaten. It was the perfect size as well, not too small that your not getting your moneys worth but not so big that you leave there feeling like so full you may be sick. It was a fairly expensive eating out option but it was well worth it! Highly recommend for the sunday roast, and I did also notice they did cheap $10 lunch options during the week. read more

Don't let the name fool you, this is a bone fide restaurant. The first room you enter is indeed a bar but the restaurant out the back is a hidden gem, and so friendly. I had the good fortune to eat here with my family this week and got to sample many of the dishes. The Berkshire pork starter was amazing: breadcrumb crusted block of two different pork dishes with rhubarb purée. Although they are simple the pizzas and Tuscan bread and haloumi salad are also really good. Don't leave without ordering the salted caramel tart. The Australian Youth Hotel seems like a typical Aussie pub at first. However, next to the bar where they serve the typical pub classics they have a dedicated dining room with excellent food. I tried the truffled arancini and the house made gnocci with roasted cauliflower and goats cheese (photo below with Pizza is from a different day). I was very surprised about the high quality because I simply didn't expect it from a pub. The service was very welcoming and efficient too. There is an upstairs / beergarden area which I can't rate since it was closed for a private function that night. However, the entrance bar area is very inviting too if you feel like a few drinks after dinner and a chat. As most pubs they also have a gambling area. I will come back for sure and check out the beergarden someday read more

I dined here on the recommendation of my dad, who has just moved into the area. We were after an upmarket restaurant for a birthday dinner. This place did not disappoint. I must have driven past this place dozens of times, but never really noticed it. The front bar looks quite original and perhaps even dated, but don't let the pokies turn you off- behind the bar is a hidden gem of a room, with beautiful beams and stonework. Firstly, miracle of all miracles, my glutard, dairy free, no tomato, pears or pineapple, pescatarian sister actually found a MAIN and a DESSERT she could eat (and enjoyed!!) She had a Southern Indian inspired Monkfish curry (it smelt amazing and the herbs and spices, like cardamon pods and curry leaves were visible) and coconut milk panna cotta. I we also have the petit fours, salted caramel tart, garlic bread, lamb rack and I had the crab linguine. All were delicious, and while the serves were generous, they weren't heavy or overwhelming. We are not usually 3 course people or often even two course people, but in this instance we had all three. Like other reviewers, I found the staff attentive, but not over bearing. They quickly checked with the kitchen regarding my sister's dietary requirements. The staff were sometimes hard to signal, but given they had a full restaurant and never stood still, it was understandable and not annoying. The meals came relatively quickly. You can also check out the current menu and book through their website. The manager did also say that if we emailed or rang up with our special dietary requirements a couple of days in advance, the chef could come up with a special dish. I would highly recommend booking- we went on a Tuesday night and the place was full AND turning away people. This place has 2 Good Pub Guide schooners, but to be honest (am I ever anything but?) Had dinner with my wife here last night, a place we have frequented a few times as its local. Most choices were OK but one that we ordered (slow braised octopus) was very ordinary. When the waiter asked if everything was OK, we'd left the dish uneaten as the octopus was soggy (watery)and had no flavour whatsoever, she dismissed this as irrelevant given it was a slow braised dish??? I challenged her "opinion" that was how it was supposed to be and again she pretty much wasn't interested and dismissed our complaint. No offer of something else, or even to let the chef know or remove the charge for it. Pity, as its a nice place for a pub dinner but with little care about customer satisfaction we probably won't' be back. read more

I really enjoyed a meal here last night with my partner, we shared 3 dishes. The service was absolutely brilliant. Very attentive and knowledgeable staff who aren't in your face, aren't pompous or pretentious like some other local pubs. The food was wonderful. The crisp fried calamari with black lime salt, green chilli & coriander aioli was super tasty. I'm not normally a fan of squid but t was crispy and not oily. The coriander aioli is a great touch. I had the house made pumpkin & ricotta tortellini with amaretti & sage beurre noisette. Who would have though amaretti with pasta. I went to heaven and beyond. For good measure we ordered the quattro formaggi pizza which admittedly we ate one slice and then I asked for the rest to be packed up to take home. I devoured that a few hours later. The Australian Youth Hotel is absolutely amazing in every aspect. Right from the moment you walk in you are greeted by lovely hotel management and staff. The Hotel is clean and the chefs produce some of the best foods you can find. Honestly, the food is truly amazing no matter what you order you will not be disappointed. Wednesday nights are a great night to attend and join in on the Trivia night whilst enjoying a yummy schnitzel & chips. Seriously you have to try!!! Had a drink here with a mate after work. Given it was a Tuesday evening we were expecting a quiet one, but the bar was pretty busy and finding a seat was a competitive business. I figured out why when one of the bar staff came around to try and sign us up for their membership drive: free beer and wine between 5-7pm when you flash your member card! And it wasn't just Tooheys they were flogging either: I got a James Squire. If that's not the best happy hour in Sydney I don't know what is. Because it was noisy with chat I didn't hear the finer details of the deal - does it only apply on Tuesday nights? What's the catch? - but at that moment in time it didn't matter. The staff were also coming around with platters of finger food. All different kinds of finger food! Like arancini balls and spring rolls and meat options that I didn't pay attention to. I addition I bought a bowl of the handcut fries, which were a nice relief in a market now flooded with the shoestring variety - they have a pretty decent menu with a couple of vego options and (according to the website) also do two-for-one meals on Tuesdays. And the staff were really sweet; even though it was busy the girl who served me asked, "Same again?" when I reappeared for round two. I love that! The clientele were an interesting mix of suits and young professionals and regulars playing the pokies (the pokies room has one of those old terrace house fireplaces in it, and the contrast really tickled me). I ran into an old friend I hadn't seen in a million years; it was that kinda night. I want to come back and take advantage of the beer garden when the weather is more reliable. Apparently the Australian Youth was established in 1857, which surely would make it one of the oldest pubs in Sydney(?), and definitely a nicer place to visit than any of the ones in The Rocks. Great meal!!! We'd just got back in the country from a long vacation. Found the menu in our motel room and wandered up the road. Loved the cosy atmosphere and settled in to wait for dinner service. Enjoyed a really delicious meal here with company. Upscale menu, sumptuous meats and hearty but elevated basics, ranging from pork chops to pork sausages. Prices aren't cheap but it's worth every penny. Everything I ate was delicious, everything everyone else ordered looked great, and there wasn't a morsel left on anyone's plate at the end. Service was not only friendly, they were on the ball with drinks, water, and offered just the right amount of banter to be funny but not intrude on our conversation. After paying the bill in what felt like a swanky upscale gastropub, we decided to wander to another part of the hotel with the footy on and have drinks. I like that the separate spaces offer different atmospheres for different functions but all seem classy still. Great pub, attached and quiet restaurant, and an outdoor courtyard. TVs in the pub and courtyard for sports etc. Wandered into a quiet, nondescript place looking for a beer and some cricket and found at least 50 people enjoying themselves. I was thoroughly impressed with the environment, beer selection and menu. Crowd was mainly 20-30s, and clearly a place where 2-10 friends get together regularly for drinks. Food service is right across all three seating areas and menu ranges from higher end gastropub fare to fancy burgers and pizza so there's something for everyone. I brought my teenage son and were only unable to sit in the bar, but the courtyard was a better spot for us anyways. read more
