Is this a pub, or is it a craft beer bar. Well, it is probably both, because you are actually allowed to be both. Okay, it doesn't have the hundred-odd taps that you see in some of these bars, but it still has a pretty decent number of different, and unique, beers available. The other thing is that this is a pretty decently sized pub with some great décor as well - something that really stands out for me when it comes to pubs. Lovely and iconic building but the staff is a useless bunch of teenagers passing through town that don't give a damn about providing a good customer service experience. I noticed that in Australia customer service is terrible because the employees don't have to work hard to earn their money. A sad byproduct of living in such a great first world society. read more

This place was an absolute hideous was to end our night. The bouncer was really sleazy. Made widely inappropriate remarks about the length of my friends skirt. When we got in the 'bar tended' attempted to pour me a beer. It was 90 percent foam. Not even drinkable. We then had to fight like animals to get a table. No system or organisation what so ever. After waiting for 90 minutes our medium rare steaks came burnt to a crisp and stone cold! Never again! read more

The scungy old Newtown Hotel has re-opened its doors, and it has a little bit of something for everyone. The downstairs part of the pub is still verifiably "publike" with large spaces, pokies, pool tables and random blokes staring at everyone. But there is a surfeit of seating, which can be handy when all the small bars are chockers. Then there's the upstairs. IT'S BACK: the marvellous big Victorian balcony. Love love love! Similar to the Exchange in Balmain, the Newtown Pub has a marvellous big balcony skirting around two sides of this large hotel. They've painted it green, and it's quite lush. It's also competitive real estate, so weeknights might be easier if you're looking to nab a table on the balcony. Now, the upstairs of the Newtown Hotel has a restaurant thing going on, though it's fairly informal. They call it "The Animal." And the name is telling, because this is not a good spot for vegetarians. The food is Greek-inspired, with shared plates and rather a lot of spit-roasted meat. We had the lamb (a shared plate of spit-roast lamb for $40 - easily split between 3 or 4 people). The watermelon & feta salad was also excellent. Some parts of the upstairs are reserved for restaurant seating, and others are open slather, get-what-you-can-get. The balcony area has to close at 10pm on weeknights, but the inside is still rather nice, so this wasn't a big deal. I have heard complaints that the service is a bit hipster and useless, but we found the staff to be very attentive and friendly, no problems there at all. Oh, and one other thing: they also have wine "on tap". Decent Pinot Gris for $7.50. Or you can buy carafes. This place is big, brash, and full of punch. It's a bit all over the place, but I liked it. UPDATE: Went back here on a weekend and this place is cra-aaa-aaa-zy! Sooo many people. It was a madhouse. There was a line out the front. It's a pub! Hypeorama. The balcony was still gorgeous, and the food was mostly excellent. Not a fan of the beans though, too mushy. And the donuts were maybe too doughy. But there is still plenty of good stuff on the menu. The chook is great, as was the walnut-choc dessert. We ordered with little restraint - drinks & food, inc. dessert, and it came to about $50 a head. Not cheap, but it's not Porteno. read more

OK, point blank, I LOVED IT!!!! Had a glass of wine downstairs, REALLY liked the vibe. Plush, chic white couches, hipster trendy diner seating, retro mural... how could I not like it? I love it! It recalled the scenes from Pulp Fiction in the 50's restaurant with Uma Thurman and John Travolta and their $5 shake and quirky dancing. The crowd was really varied too - professionals, hipsters, a few generic Newtown weirdos, and us... yeah.. all kinds. I like that. We went upstairs for a meal afterwards and had to wait on the balcony for about 30 minutes. There are far worse places to be forced to wait on a Tuesday evening. I can't imagine how awesome it would be to hang out on the balcony on a hot summers day with a great cocktail in hand and even better company. Consider it on my to-do list for this summer, fo' sho! ;) I had the spit roasted suckling pig and a greek salad. They accidentally brought me the lamb and I tasted it before I or they realized and it was absolutely amazing. The pig was great, but the lamb was better. I don't even eat lamb normally (traumatic childhood Easter show experience, lol). They also have a wide variety of wine on tap. We had a carafe of the cab sav and it was a really great cab sav. A+++ - the service was awesome, everyone was lovely. Our waitress was chatty and friendly without being intrusive and annoying. I loved her. After our meal, I was fully buzzed and started noticing the doo wop blasting out of the speakers. I didn't really want to leave, but I have a 7am start tomorrow! I dropped into this pub on 20th June for a drink on way to see Mad Max4 @ the Dendy. It is very funky place with lots of cute bars. The wines are always good and the beer fresh . Plus they have a micro brewery on site. I ordered a lunch special Spicey Pork Pizza which for $ 12 was great value. It was a thin crust about 12" across. The pizza was very morish . I did a damn good job of swearing off our new local watering hotel for as long as I could .. No, Newtown; I won't let you win me over with your weekend DJs and your disco dance floor; and yes, I've heard you have a rocking happy hour from 5-7 every night, but I just well, I just, am turned off by the fact that you have a cutie little courtyard with garden lights and I'm just, not .. so .. into ... ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, I'll give it a go! And oooh, did I go .. Spiraling far, far down this rabbit hole into endless $4 happy hour house wines and seemingly bottomless Cooper's pitchers. What was supposed to be an easy drink or two on Thursday plummeted nowhere fast into a boozy six-hour session at the Newtown. And I will gladly admit: I loved EVERY MINUTE of it! A kissing booth. A beer garden. An upstairs balcony. A stage. A dance floor. A restaurant. Me oh my, what have I been missing!? This party place gets rowdy and the eclectic mix of Newie goers speaks for how comfortable and unassuming the ambiance is. It's a heck of a mixed bag, which makes it an amazing place to people watch. During the early evening it's a popular after work spot which rapidly transforms into a bit of a trash den during the weekends. But hey, Newtown needed this! Nowhere else on King is there a venue as awesomely inspired as this one where trendies, gays, junkies, and suits alike can come together and celebrate how eclecticly insane our neighbourhood is! Sitting on the upstairs balcony on a balmy night with wine, great people watching and their excellent food is a perfect Newtown experience. The whitebait, calamari, haloumi and spinach pie always very good. Service is efficient and friendly and attentive. Update 25 Nov. 2016: Damn! The wonderful Greek menu upstairs is no more, replaced by a very ordinary Asian offering. Nothing special about the calamari entree or tofu. Wine on tap no longer offered and the friendly, attentive service is gone. Dirty tables and couches on the balcony. Under the previous management even the bouncers said hello and goodbye, but now they don't see you. What a shame this great place is now just a pub with so-so food. read more

Refurbished, multi-zoned, and now very, very busy. The front bar is for drinking and chatting. There are stools at benches, semi-circular booths, low plush sofas, and ledges by the windows to the street. The back courtyard is the resurrected remains of the old freaky tiki lounge: get your rum-based pacific drinks back here, with its own bar, lots of room, but unfortunately a swarm of smokers. Go upstairs and through The Animal - the high-end Greek restaurant which I've not tried by heard good things about - and, if you're lucky or patient, you can get a boozing table on the upstairs balcony overlooking King St. Typical Aussie beers on tap, plus some imports (Asahi, for instance, though they charge a premium for it). Cider, too. And - interestingly, white wine and prosecco on tap! Plus some fairly wicked cocktails, made in tin cups. The hipster quotient is fairly high, but not overwhelming. read more

I was pleasantly surprised when I came here tonight to find an array of people just enjoying themselves. The music was fun and the beer and shots selection was pretty diverse. The only bad thing was they close at midnight even on a Friday nice. Coming from NYC, we're just so use to people keeping open till 4AM. But this bar was capped and locked by 12AM. We're thinking likely it's the area. It may even be location based thing? None the less come here for a drink and a little dancing :) you won't be disappointed. I was just "invited" to leave the place because, accordingly to the staff and the manager, I was, as they say, intoxicated. I was particularly sober, having fun conversations in the smoking allowed area but I was not drunk or anything as I can have a good English writing now at 10:20 PM of 17/02 (Fair fay) . But apparently they have a problem with me they I am not aware of. Anyway. Now it's one costumer they are loosing. I know Australia has policies about people staying in hotels/bars when they are not aware of their attitudes but if the staff/manager had a bit of sense, they would see I was okay. But anyway, private place, their choices, so now my choice of crossing them of places to go. read more

This is a fun bar/restaurant/dance floor. I went for dinner recently with a few friends, ordered food at the bar and got a booth. Prices were very reasonable, and the food was good - nothing special, but I didn't expect that for a place that doesn't specialise in food. At around 8:30 or 9 the DJ started, and people began dancing on the dance floor. The dance floor, though, was pretty small, and soon there wasn't much space for more people. We ended up dancing on the edge of the dance floor which wasn't ideal. I was okay with it, though, because I loved all the throwback songs the DJ was playing - Nelly, Blink 182, etc. Very 90s-00s focused, which I personally love. I'm not sure if that was standard or not, as I've only been once, but I had a great time. read more

I love coming to this place. It's become the go-to for my group. It's got everything on my hit-list: cool atmosphere, good music (especially on Friday night), plenty of drink options, fun extras like a photobooth and pool tables. 5 stars I'd say.. The caravan upstairs is an awesome space for a private event. It would comfortably fit about 30 people. The lighting on the ceiling is funky and there are a few bras stuck up there too (but luckily they have been placed in an artistic way and not just thrown up there by some random drunk chicks)! I was walking down King street last night with my mates and wanted just a simple place to drink a Corona for Cinco de Mayo and was a little put off by the rowdy small pubs or quiet cocktail bars that lined the street until we came across the Newtown Hotel. It was perfect: large tables, good music, a bar menu. We sat and talked till 'late.' At closing they rang a bell over the bar and that sealed the deal for me. I LOVE BELLS TO CLOSE THE BAR! New favorite uni bar. I'm sure econometrics will force us to have another drink soon. read more

This is my favorite local pub. Good variety of beer, wine and spirits, excellent atmosphere and solid pub food. The bartenders are exactly what you expect, meaning a bit gruff and just as likely to make it clear they think you're an idiot as actually answer your question. When the place is full, seating is impossible and conversation gets tough over the noise, but on a weekday night the porch is a gorgeous place to unwind with a cold one and a view on King St. Check it out, but have a back up plan in case it doesn't suit your vibe. read more

The patio was pretty nice with some interesting people watching and the food was decent too. We shared some type of meat and the beans and another appie and I thought it wasn't bad and not too pricey either. Had a private event at here and we had the Purple Onion Caravan Room which is upstairs next to "The Animal". Great atmosphere and the room is very creatively decorated with lamps and bras hanging from the ceiling. They have wine on tap, which is quite interesting and another thing worth mentioning is that they charge a surcharge on all transactions paid by card. read more

Great Newtown pub. Downstairs there is a big indoor section and some pool tables which is great because lots of pubs have been ditching them. The outdoor area is large and has loads of plants and lights. They can also put a cover over it in bad weather which is good. The burgers were great and very generous serves. Reasonably priced food and good service. read more

New restaurant upstairs - Eat Up - is very ordinary. Pork ribs looked and tasted as if they'd been boiled, Takoyaki were just cheese balls and the service was a little too nonchalant given the paucity of diners. Nice wine though. read more

This place is really busy in the evenings, so I drink here in the afternoon. It is usually pretty empty during the day so you can appreciate how nice the interior of the building is. The balcony is quite pleasant too. The bartenders have always been friendly. read more
