We only came here to waste wait time before a dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant but this was well enough. We were in the upstairs bar area. We were in the mood for pre-dinner cocktails and light snack and we got it here. I love cocktails so I went for that menu at once. I chose the Banana Old Fashioned because it sounded interesting. We ordered whitefish carpaccio as well which was pretty bland, I let my partner eat the rest of that. My drink was fairly nice, we took our time and tried to enjoy the ever hipster atmosphere of the place. Once that became too palpable though we left. I finished my drink but we're not in a rush to come back. The setting was nice and relaxing for nighttime though. I'm grateful they served the drink and food fast so we didn't have to stick around too long.

Incredibly homely Darlo Bar has that extended lounge room feel to it, probably to cater for all the travellers bunking up in the area. There are 2 storeys and an upstairs beer garden which does get a bit pokey. There are a couple of bars but the main one downstairs is definitely the best equipped. I got stuck into a few Drambuies here so yes the top shelf got some dusting in my stay. However the tap beer also flows quite well. I was on a blind date and although the relationship didn't take off the night went on for hours.

Well, this bar is pretty tacky, and it certainly isn't anything that I would want to return to. The beer selection is pretty limited, and the bar itself is, well, not sleazy, but it certainly isn't all that great. Yeah, there really isn't anything that would attract me to this place.

I arrived around 10am; check-in time at our hotel was noon so I had a couple of hours to kill. The hotel stored my luggage for me and I set out on a leisurely Sunday morning exploration of King's Cross. After a bit of seriously jet-lagged, zoned-out strolling I noticed on a corner an enclosed patio area open to the street, empty but beckoning. It was attached to the Empire Hotel, an historic-looking building with a very cool art-deco facade. I crossed the street and walked in and met bartender Albert, who kindly sat me down and gave me a sample tour of all the Australian beers the Empire had on tap. All were fantastic; Australia is a kind of beer paradise if you're a golden lager fan like me. I made my choice and retired to the patio with my pint to relax and soak up the vibe of Sunday morning King's Cross street life. Over the next couple of hours (and pints) I met several colorful characters on the patio, notably well-dressed long-time KC local Tim, who was in the Australian Army and was preparing to deploy back to Afghanistan in a couple of days. Tim filled me in on the history of King's Cross, which has through the decades been Sydney's bohemian zone, red-light district, gay-pride zone, and seedy all-night party bar destination. It was easy to see "The Cross" as it's called was currently in transition, undergoing a steady gentrification as befits its gorgeous physical setting amid historic architecture and streets lined with mature shade trees. Around noon I made my way back to our hotel to secure our room and a well-deserved nap, happy to have been so well-received by the friendly Australians at the Empire Hotel and looking forward to our Sydney adventure that was soon to begin.

We were doing luandry accross the street so we just dropped in. Service is fine -- nothing to rave about, nothing to complain about. "Royal Albert" sounds grand; the experience is more "friendly local pub." Still, it's an easygoing place that does the job.

They were running trivia games while we were there, which added to the overall vibe and made it feel like a true neighborhood spot. The ambiance is great: a cool, old-school bar with friendly local staff, and you definitely get the sense that people know each other here. Solid selection of beer, wine, and cocktails/mixed drinks. My husband ordered a Guinness, which was a good choice. Unfortunately, my margarita was underwhelming and honestly wasn't that great, which knocked the experience down a bit. Overall, it's a good place to hang out for the atmosphere--just keep your cocktail expectations reasonable

Loved the hand cut chips - little crispy on the outside. Dessert was also a delight with my favourites being the pumpkin panna cotta and and the coriander ice cream (weird but tasty). The crowd is sharply-dressed but laid back; this isn't a pregame pub, or a uni bar, or a hipster den. It's a perfect inner city oasis, a big, airy, well-lit castle packed with discerning people doing discerning things. I want to be one of these people. Can they smell a pretender? They haven't yet. And I'mma keep going until they do. The food is excellent gastro pub fare, and the big wooden deck area is worth the price of admission alone, and when you consider there isn't a price of admission it's really costing you more NOT to come here, isn't it?

The accommodations themselves were lovely, spacious, well-appointed and clean. The various extras and amenities were truly unexpected: a full vegetarian breakfast daily, happy hour in the evening, a well-stocked minibar at no cost to us, and additional freebies in the room. What left a bad taste in my mouth was the fact that when we checked out I realized that I had left a $500 necklace and some costume jewelry earrings in a glass in the room. When I returned to inquire about the items several hours later after a Big Bus tour of Sydney, I was told that they were not to be found. I was disappointed with myself for having forgotten these items but was doubly disappointed that the housekeeping staff did not notice that I had left them and worse that they were nowhere to be found. The response from the front desk manager when I emailed the hotel was apologies but nothing offered to me to make things right. Again, disappointing and definitely not the way I run my own (dog) business. Will not be staying here again.
