The food is gastro pub prices (think $20-$25 mains and $8 bowls of chips) but there's a special most nights, the chicken schnitty one is particularly good, you get a huge gourmet schnitterz with a range of flavours and slaw and chips and the entire plate is big as a man's face. This is a good place to watch the footy at over a quiet jar of something cold and bitter. Hunker down in one of the leather couches and ask for your game to be turned on the big screen, although it will depend on what's on and how many other punters are in for the other codes. AFL, pffft. A part of me thought that hole-in-the-wall bars was a Melbourne speciality, but it turns out that Sydney has its fair share of them as well. Anyway, I decided to pop in for a beer, and not surprisingly, I loved this place. Not only do they have craft beers on tap (and some good ones at that), but also regular events. I came here on Open Mike Night, though nobody was brave enough to take advantage of the open mike. Oh, and the atmosphere was great as well.

I love how this place does drinks - there's four taps of rotating craft beer/cider, and once they're out they tap a new flavour. They ran out of 2 beers while we were there, and a new keg was quickly tapped each time. They have cardboard signs serving as labels - an easy way to keep the signage current - and at $8-9/pint, its a great way to try different beers without damaging your wallet. For wine they only offer 1 red and 1 white each night, and those change daily. The cocktails are made with care, with a good selection of classics (martini, Manhattan) and some fruity modern conceptions as well. Food was quite good, despite some of the portions being small. The cheesesteak for $16 could easily be consumed in a few bites. The pulled pork for $16 was delicious, served between two toasted pieces of delicious bread (not the "hoagie" I was expecting, but some of the best pulled pork I've had in Australia), and a better serve than the cheesesteak. The sliders were, again, on the small side. At $4/each or 4 for $15, you'd need 4 to make a meal. I found the chicken sliders a bit bland, possibly being overpowered by the potatoes in the garlic mash. The beef sliders were much better, with a delicious pickle relish. Of course, I had to grab the wings (6 for $9 or 12 for $16) which were one of the standouts for the night. A bit sweet at first, they pack a bit of a punch with a heat that builds. The three chip options (chilli cheese fries, sweet potato wedges, and steak fries with chipotle mayo) were all pretty good. Rumour (or rather, Facebook) has it that this place does $0.50 wings and $5 hot dogs on Wednesdays - definitely worth checking out. Come early if you want a table - we managed to grab one of the last of them at 6 pm on a Saturday, and didn't see much turnover during our 3 hour stay.

Technically everyone at the table has to order it, but our girl let me order pasta carbonara. We got our beers and a buzzer for food pickup. The room was busy, but a bunch of tables left and staff stayed on it to clear and set the tables for new customers. Pizza was delivered and shortly after the buzzer went off. It's not overly busy on a school night which is when I usually go but I can imagine it would be a little more crowded on the weekends. They have a great cocktails list as well as a food menu though I've never eaten here. Sometimes there's table service, sometimes there isn't and you usually wait a little longer for your drinks to arrive but a cute bar nonetheless.

Lookee who just opened in Randwick?…read more Not content with kicking epic amounts of ass in Darlinghurst, the Lil Darlin team have snagged a smashing position on the pedestrian-friendly corner of Perouse Rd just near the cinemas where they can sprawl out onto the pavement in a comfortable and aesthetically-pleasing mess of inviting tables and chairs. Caught up with an old friend for din-dins across the road and wanted an after-meal tipple. Last thing I remember is walking out of the restaurant. Then we were in a front booth at Lil Darlin. Got tractor beam? I don't even recall crossing the road, yet it must have happened. Being a Tuesday night it was pretty quiet but there was this lovely treacle-like relaxed vibe that damn near had me slipping my shoes off and jamming a hand down my duds Al Bundy-style. This place made me feel like one of the cool kids, but in the most welcoming and unpretentious way. The wait staff are genetically blessed valkyries with shy smiles and lovely manners. The ambient lighting and velvety shiraz, the wicker bird cage and faux vines, that Sylvan glade-interior, it all got me. Love.
