Met up with some friends here for drinks and food. We all met in the back room, which we had to ourselves. I'm not sure if this is the norm, but we ordered at the bar, got a number and then our food was brought out. Not sure if there's waiter service normally. Anyway, I was not overly hungry. My friend and I decided to share fried Mac and cheese and fries. The fried Mac and cheese was good. The menu described them as "balls" but they were more like bites. Flavors were good. It came with a black garlic mayo, which was pretty good. The French fries were also really good. It came with an aioli for dipping which was flavorful. To drink I had the house lager, which was basic, but refreshing. Decent spot to hang with friends. read more

This pub is most definitely a must do if you're in Sydney and love a pub feed! They punch well above most. Really friendly staff, nothing but a can-do but casual spirit. Well set out spaces over 2 floors, proper a/c - not too cold. Now the best part the food and drinks could well be much more expensive. Amazing bottle prices for wine, loads of in Tap Craft Beers (see Image for list) and super generous food portions for the low prices but great quality all the same. I love the Aussie pub with flair and craft beers. This place has a room to suit every mood. Came here for an early-ish lunch on a Sunday. It was quite dead. Guessing everyone was still waking up from the night before. We ordered our meals at the counter and slipped into a leather clad booth. As there was no one else there the concept of "wait time" does not exist. So I can't say how this pub would fair during a crazy busy night. I ordered the Angus Beef Burger ($16.50) and the wife went with The Dove's Nachos ($16). The burger was nice, but JUST nice. Not "whoa dude, you gotta try this". Not sure if the recent surge of milk buns on my burgers has tainted me but this black bun with sesame seeds wasn't doing it for me. Unsure if it was the way it was toasted or if it was stale (or both). The fact that I'm questioning it isn't a good sign. Beef was fresh and not over processed. Could have done with more blue cheese mayo, I know it's blue cheese but I like a cheese flavour that's powerful enough to knock my teeth out. The wife wasn't expecting the nachos she received. It was three big corn tortillas as the bed for the chilli con-carne. She was extremely happy with it. The flavours where bold and didn't lack in the slightest. Great nachos for one, not sure it would be good for a group. I'm sure we will be back again. There was a good amount we wanted to try on the menu. read more

There are so many pubs in Surry Hills that it can be almost impossible to find a decent one. Well, this place comes close, not just with its character (the artwork on the walls is pretty cool, and artwork is something that always impresses me), but with the huge craft beer selections they have as well. Then again, being a craft beer bar is always going to be a huge bonus where I happen to be concerned. Yep, this pub is definitely going to be on my must go back sometime list, though the beer garden can get a little crowded. read more

Love the name off this place and the reviews that followed :)!! A decent pub tucked away away in surry hills :), 2 levels with the bar and sports on the bottom and a var and dining upstairs. If you look behind you before you get to the top of the stairs you'll seee a big cool moose head :D!! You never see things like that as much anymore lol! This place is very inviting which ever floor your on :). Came here for a birthday dinner so was upstairs :). Been here once before & was downstairs, had their veggie/meat pies & craft beers :)!! Pies were on point tasty :D, had 2 of the beef & 1 chicken, Craft beers are way better than the popular brews :)!! Was here for the nd time for a birthday, was 5 of us all up and we were all hungry so for starters we got both the fries & the sweet potato wedges, buttermilk wings, mac n cheese balls. Honestly i hate the say it but the starters were nothing out of the ordinary.... For mains we got southern fried chicken burger, hickory smoked pulled beef brisket burger (was told it was one of the very popular burgers), rump steak, beer battered fish n chips & the Jambalaya :). The Jambalaya, the rump steak & fish n chips were fairly simple but on point in tasty :D!!! but as for the burgers they both came out cold and even being cold it didn't taste as good either, a good burger is good cold or warm so it was no point asking for it to be warmed up haha.. Nothing worse than perusing a great menu; thinking you know what you want despite the recommendations of locals; getting your meal only to want what everyone else is having. If you're a first timer like me and visiting on a Sunday, get the roast. I ordered the beef brisket and it was lacklustre in comparison. The slightly sweet sauce was great but the cornbread muffin and sides were just sad. The Sunday roast however filled the plate. Lamb this week with all the trimmings. Peas, potato, pumpkin, gravy and a Yorkshire pud! Comfort food at its best. We later ordered a garlic and garlic and cheese bread at $4 and $6. That's cheap to what I'm used to paying and the menu in general is very affordable. The beer selection is varied, 26 on tap and schooners were only $5 with pints for $7. Cocktails ranged from $12 to $15 with the American breakfast martini the favourite amongst our group. We did get a stroppy blonde waitress handing out the meals but aside from that it was a nice rainy Sunday afternoon by the fire. read more

Had a birthday on the Dove and Olive balcony which worked out beautifully. The food was good, the beers were fantastic and the friendly waitstaff were so attentive, it seemed odd at first (I got used to it real quick). Post renovation, these guys have really built themselves a reputation as a craft beer destination. They've done a good job hipster-ing themselves up (moose heads, antique lamps, boutique beer) without wandering into wanker-territory. Between the selection of beer on tap that would make Danny Murph look limited and their daily specials (hellooo $9 steaks!) add this to your list of summer beer hangouts! read more

This place is another nice old Surry Hills pub (built in 1876, apparently) that's been treated to an upgrade. You've got a few spaces to choose from: the main bar downstairs, the courtyard or balcony, or the cocktail bar upstairs. There are a bunch of events, like live jazz each Sunday and cocktail happy hour from 4pm to 7pm Monday to Friday. There's also $1 pool between 6pm and 8pm Monday to Friday and all day Sunday! There are $10 meals on offer all day, but I'd recommend the beef and Burgundy pie with mash and peas for $16 (an excellent winter warmer) or the chicken schnitzel burger with chips and guacamole for $12. There's also a bottle shop attached should you wish to take a few roadies with you. read more

Absolutely excellent beer, service, and atmosphere! Even on a packed night, the bartender helped me choose a good local craft beer. It was harder than usual to do so, as they were having an American tap takeover in honor of the Fourth of July. Decent food and plenty of beer. We had a table booked upstairs and made use of the bar only a few steps away. However, the beer selection downstairs is a bit grander, so people took turns going downstairs for other rounds. The menu offers beer suggestions to pair up with various menu items. This is awesome for indecisive people.... like me. Free wifi for about two hours. Even though it got a tad loud at times, I was still mostly able to hear the people across the table from me, which is nice. It's not cool to go home and have your ears ringing from dealing with hella noise. Damn, I'm getting old. read more

Went to the new and improving Dove and Olive (old Clarendon) last week. The new owners definitely know what they are doing. I had a beautiful chorizo and prawn pizza as well as a steak. I love this pub simply because of the craft beer! Now, the food here isn't anything special, specifically because it is in Surry Hills, and there is great food. But they always have craft beer on tap - and a lot of it. More importantly, this is the pub that has the Battle of the Beer - this is where a competition occurs between 2 different brewers, and the winner is on tap for the entire month. So, yes, I am a lover of craft beer and hence I am a lover of the Dove & Olive. Just a warning it does get really crowded here and noisey, so sometimes it is hard to talk to friends - but that's why I encourage everyone to learn AUSLAN (Aus sign language), always helps and noise never becomes a factor. read more

I can't tell you if D & O is typical of pubs in Sydney. If it is, then that town is more of a treasure than one might expect. But I'll bet that this joint is exceptional in all the best ways. #1. The Fish and Chips here are spot on. There is just that perfect crunch to the light fish (barramundi) that is just superb, even when you're halfway done with your pitcher, you still keep saying, wow this is great. #2. The price is right. On everything. #3. Cool places to sit, alone, in pairs or with a gang of pals. I like the open windows. #4. Swift, friendly service. But I have to say the whole pub thing as done Aussie style is just a cool experience for us Yanks. Now I've been to several pubs actually in Sydney, now that I think of it. And this one had just the right mix of families, hipsters, suits, sportos and girls. Everything had a very comfortable vibe. Nice one guys, even without American catsup. The Dove and Olive has trivia on Tuesday nights and it's worth coming just to listen to the host's endless commentary in between each question. If you are sensitive to swear words then you won't like it, but I think he is entertaining and just bloody f*#cking funny as h*ll! The questions come at a decent pace and there are 'who am I' questions in between each round with the opportunity to win free beers. The food here is also great - try the steak or the salmon or the po boy special. read more

Yes! This an excellent place for quality pub food and an excellent draft selection highlighting microbrews. While I was staying down near Central Station for a little bit, this was my go to for dinner. You get great quality pub food for very reasonable prices, and then some great exposure to microbrews here. As someone from the US West Coast, I want to see more of this out here in AU! There are always some great specials or themes going on during the week, so you might as well grab a chair and hunker down over some good eats and brews! read more

Good American style food, Poboys, ribs, buffalo wings... Worth a visit. Beer selection good, combination of Aussie boutique beers and American pale ales. Typical Surry Hills bar, although seemed a better mix of local regulars and hipsters, so still had some ambiance. Lights pretty dusty, so either part of atmosphere or needs some TLC For all the comments about dust and hipsters, this was my kind of bar and spent several hours with good company. read more

The food was really reasonably priced - $12.50 for a schnitzel - and really good quality for what one might ordinarily expect from pub food. The Clarendon Hotel on Devonshire Street in Surry Hills is a nice pub where you can get a cheap meal from. In fact there is a $10 all day menu. You can't get much cheaper than that! There is things on during the week like some pub trivia or poker so if you feel like using your brain or trying your luck it might be worth a visit. Each weekday happy hour lasts for three hours so if you get there the right time and order a meal it can be a nice and cheap night out. There's a couple of tables outside although ample room downstairs and they even have an upstairs bar. It's pretty popular with the after work crowd and locals and it's not hard to see why. read more

The boys that bought our meals out were awesome but the three chicks at the bar struggled to serve the entire bar and only acknowledged the customer directly in front on them. Hands down the worst meal we have ever eaten in a Sydney pub. Chicken pie was a dry mess. Looked like it had been in the oven a year and there was no sauce in it - just rock hard little lumps of shrivelled up chicken. The pasty was like cardboard. I don't quite remember why I bookmarked this pub but I did and that caused me to wind up at the Dove & Olive on a rainy night last week at peak beer o'clock. The whole dining area was incredibly loud and kind of grungy which wasn't what I was expecting. Maybe it was just me but the food was cheap but still not worth the price and my beer seemed kind of on the expensive side for the venue. Eat here in a pinch and certainly drink here, everyone was having a great time, but I'm not heading back any time soon. read more
