The Bank Hotel Newtown is a landmark venue transformed by a contemporary renovation and rebuilt with a nod to its Art Deco glory. There are three bars and a Thai Restaurant (Sumalee Thai) within the bank, with lots of separate areas to break up the crowds. The front bar has a DJ on the weekends, while the back bar regularly has two for one cocktail hour. This opens to a rear deck with seating, heaters and umbrellas - an all-weather arena for the smokers, but gorgeous in the afternoon. Wednesday night is girls' night, a regular in the queer lady scene for longer than anyone who attends can remember, stretching back to when pool sharks ruled the front bar before somehow making it to the beer garden. On Saturday night a mixed crowd pack the place out, with a DJ for the upstairs dance floor.

I wandered into Bank Hotel on one of my meanderings through Newtown, and I was suitably impressed. This place is packed as early as 7pm on a Friday night! I suppose all the workaholics swarm after they clock out. While the inside gets quite crowded (I couldn't find a seat!), the outdoor area is lovely. It has a fairy-meadow-esque air about it, with soft lighting, cosy seating and plant life lining the borders. There is also a private section that can be closed off to the general public if you ever want to host a function, so there's that. The drinks are fairly standard, the crowd is a little bit aloof, but it was only 7pm, to be fair. Perhaps they loosen up later in the night! I particularly enjoyed the adorable schizophrenic man seated next to us, who appeared to be having a very lively conversation with himself over a beer. If I can expect that every time, I might decide to frequent Bank Hotel more often!

I like the feel of the Bank Hotel in Newtown, it has a very modern feel to it, it is light and airy and a comfortable relaxing space. It has obviously been renovated with the inclusion of marble floors, accompanied by wooden tables and chairs along with padded bench space it is laid back, yet classy at the same time. What I like most though is the artwork decoration. The walls have mural like, Aboriginal art style, but with an almost futuristic feel. If it is not Aboriginal I apologise, but that is the look of it to me, but it is not traditional in it's colour palate with the inclusion of bright, almost fluorescent colours, it's great to travel your eyes across. Rather than traditional pub food, The Bank features two menu's one offering modern bar cuisine and they also feature the Sumalee restaurant offering Thai cuisine. I recommend the Duck spring rolls, delicious.

A friend decided to hold an event where we would all gather together and drink of the wine or beer, talk of the times or things and sit on the seats or benches that positioned themselves in the downstairs area of the Bank Hotel. To get down there, we had to walk down staircases and through the bistro type section of the establishment until we found the group of people we had come to see. I was running late as myself and a friend had just been to see a film and it turned out to be a much longer film than previously anticipated. We sat down with some drinks and whiled the time away in a conversational capacity, detailing our lives during school, our lives after school and the potential for further life continuing on from this state of the present that we now found ourselves in. We moved up from this area and a small amount of people remained, eager to continue to drink that sweet elixir called house white and perhaps even dance a little on the 'mocked up' dance floor upstairs. We sat around a long table near the bar and then when the right song came on, we stood and shook our money makers, (in my case a pen (ink went everywhere)) and showed our appreciation to the DJ for playing such a great track.

Very cool pub with a really nice beer garden to sit abd enjoy a few drinks and some good food with friends. The service was fast abd friendly, the menu, although not too extensive had enough choices to puck from without being overwhelming. I picked the haloumi burger which came with shoe string fries. The burger was so good with grilled haloumi smashed avocado roasted tomato gem lettuce and aioli, every mouthfull was so enjoyable. I look forward to returning now that the weather is getting warmer, its a great spot to just chill with friends.

The refurb is cosy even if a little cheap. The American inspired menu items; pulled pork sandwiches, ribs & pizza are good, unfortunately the staff are disinterested and unfriendly. Not a good start considering they have just opened. They don't greet you & a smile would be a push, the same goes for the security staff. Loud commercial rock is constantly booming. Not a patch on The Newtown Hotel.

Garden Bar, Terrace Bar, Sports Bar and Thai Restaurant - I think that is close to having all the boxes ticked. You can only try to keep everyone happy but the Bank Hotel gets close to being a people pleaser. Smooth glossy black exterior and dim and dusky interior presents 3 very different environments depending on which part of the bar you're in. Weeknights it can be very social encouraging new acquaintances and a meet and greet. The sports bar has state of the art screens to watch your favourite games and they have strictly female bands only for live music every third Wdnesday of the month at EVE. There's one for the girls. You don't have to dress up to go here, although you will want to express yourself and offer a degree of consistency to the quality of the happy tide of clientele. It's often a start your night off venue until the weekend throttles on through the night.

My partner had been wanting to check out a pub during our time in Sydney and I found Keg and Brew close to our hotel. How to order drinks and food can get quite confusing if you are a foreigner. The first floor of the pub is a bar and the second floor is where you pick up your food you order from the bar. Everything is completely self serviced. Unclear of the process my husband and I sat down at one of the tables on the first floor. We then realized that people were ordering from the bar and we asked staff regarding how the process worked. They told us to order with them where we would pick up our food on the 2nd floor. After ordering, we actually decided to relocate to the 2nd floor without realizing we needed to pick up our drinks from the first floor bar where we ordered them. After a bit of confusion, we were able to get our food and drinks. I opted for the steak special (added some mashed potatoes on the side) and a red wine. My husband opted for the chicken parmesan and a beer. After a bit of confusion at first, the food was actually quite delicious. We enjoyed our items as we enjoyed our beer and wine after a long day. Overall, a confusing start to the night but it ended up where both of us left satisfied.

It can be a place of lodging, but also many pubs use it as well as it relates to past liquor laws. Using the term "hotel" as a way to skirt liquor licensing regulations. Strawberry Hills is a nice Aussie pub just down the street from Central Railway Station. It looks a little divey on the outside, but the 2nd floor interior is quite nice and stylish and even has free Wi-Fi. This is a good spot to get a drink and quality pub food at a reasonable price in Sydney. If you are dining upstairs, you order your food and drinks at the counter. If you are dining in, the staff then brings the food to your table when it is ready. While they do have a wine menu, there isn't one for the large assortment of beers and cider on tap. If you are not sure what to order, I would list the types of beer and cider that you like to find one that suits you. As for the food, there is a regular menu consisting of pub food and a late night menu of different pizzas. The pricing here is quite reasonable as most mains (name for entree in Australia) are under $20. Had a Sunday night dinner here and opted for the slow cooked lamb shoulder ($18) with a pint of Bulmers cider ($7). I chose lamb because it is harder to find this meat on menus in the US, whereas in Australia it seems to be a standard offering. The lamb was terrific as the meat was fall off the bone tender. There was a bit of fat and gristle on the lamb, but I was okay with this since this helped to accentuate the meat's flavor. The accompanying roasted vegetables and red wine jus were also delicious and complimented the lamb. As for the cider, it was my first time trying Bulmers and I really liked it. It has a very crisp and refreshing taste that paired well with my meal. Enjoyed my meal at Strawberry Hills. The food and drinks here are good and value for your money. I like the ambiance of this pub too as it is modern, yet is casual enough to be a local drinking hole that you frequent regularly.

Well, I took the first job that I was offered. The advertisement said, 'Sports Marketing.' Okay, sounds good. My degree is in Sports Management, perfect. How is that Sports Marketing?" The guy explained it to me, we sell tickets for clients such as Manly Sea Eagles and Surf Lifesavers. They are sports, and the raffle tickets are marketing. Sports Marketing. "Oh my God!" Or "OMG!" if you're born post 1990. The most demoralising, depressing six days of my life! I walked into the Evening Star Hotel on the sixth afternoon of my Raffle career and bought a schooner of Pale Ale. I sat in the corner, weighing up my life. Was this where I wanted to be? Feeling like a tool, trying to sell raffle tickets for a company that celebrated hitting the quota by banging a giant gong in the meeting room? A company where high fives, not only were allowed, but feverishly encouraged and almost mandatory. Is this who I was? "Hell no!" The open plan bar, the friendly, but disinterested bar tender, the second beer in my hand, drinking alone. I called up the "Sports Marketing" company and I quit, six days was all I could take. The following day I, out of spite, wrote a disgruntled letter to seek.com to complain about their lies involving the calling of themselves, 'sports marketing.' Their listing was taken down and it reappeared a few months later as a vague, sales and marketing role.
