I must admit that it is hard for me to relate to people who absolutely love a cold beer after a 9-hour shift at work. Why? Because as a freelancer I work at odd hours of the day with much more flexibility. That being said there are occasion when I do work 9am - 6pm and I do relish a nice, cold drink to help cap the day off, as if I deserved it.
The Beer Bay offers a refuge for all those hard workers to stop by and get a cheap drink of alcohol and complain about the problems of the day before catching their ferry home. Is there honestly a better way to form friendships other than over mutual hatred or complaints? I wouldn't say so. There are some who would say mutual love, but that's just boring.
The Beer Bay is little more than a counter and two serving ladies but it certainly does the trick. I'm led to believe that it offers standard drinks on the main. I don't have a problem with this as I'm an easy drinker, give me a beer, a cider, or on the rare occasion a rum and coke and I'll be happy. To one side of the counter is a set of big stairs which I, and many others, use as seats from which we can either chat or look across at kowloon, half asleep and too tired to converse. On the other side is a small fishball place, which coincidently goes perfectly well with a nice cold cider or beer.
On a Friday night the area is crowded with patrons happy to be done with work for the week. I tend to avoid this busy time as I'm not the most social of people, and small talk plus tired Brad don't combine well. I use the Beer Bay as a final oasis before my ferry ride home, where, if I'm lucky, no more work is required of me! read more
