This place is amazing. As soon as me and my two friends walked in we were immediately shown attention and got a seat near the window. The service, ambiance, and of course food was exceptional. All the servers here are so kind, chill, and funny. Definitely will be back if I visit London. I recommend ordering the bread bowl with smoked salmon in it. DELICIOUS. read more

Fab restaurant -- with their own signature dishes ( try the chicken pate mmmmh ) -- a great inexpensive bar, one glass of Merlot for only 5 gbp .... And all served by very friendly and professional staff. Besides a great restaurant with quality drinks here is a performance space, and the owner obviously knows what she is doing. Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river... First order -- how to get here easily (if you don't just happen to be strolling on the canal): If you are walking north on Pitfield Street/De Beauvoir Road and you walk over the canal, turn right directly after onto De Beauvoir Crescent, then the first right again to get down to the canal (sloped/no steps), then turn left and you'll see it just past TowPath, can't miss it. I surreptitiously stumbled upon the beautiful Barge House whilst making my way over to Proud Archivist for a bit of lunchtime working along the canal. Unfortunately tPA was off their game entirely, and made me feel like an outcast (unfortunately while I like it there, the service is a bit scattered)...but really, luckily I had noticed this seemingly new spot and made a backtrack to it to see what might be interesting. And interesting it was! A gorgeous refurb done and opened in November by a passionate family -- the Barge House is bright, spacious, and brimming with excellent food and drink. Spread over several areas: outside patio, interior bar/lounge/tables, upstairs loft and back alcove, they've styled this wonderful location in a way that makes you want to tuck in for several hours, perhaps forever. I opted for a bavette steak with potatoes, mushrooms and tomatoes (£15), which was perfect, as you can see by the photo below. I gobbled the entire thing. The chef even came out (once to ask me how I'd like it and another time to see how it was). Very nice and pleasant all around. The staff is gracious and welcoming. If not a bit forgetful. I'll give the benefit of the doubt (of course) as they are just starting to get busy (good!) but my sparkling water was forgotten entirely (but showed on the bill, making for that awkward bit of adjusting at the end) and I had to request my finale flat white a few times before it arrived. It's not for lack of effort by any means, I think they just have a lot going on. A very small thing, that I think will be rectified as soon as they get into their groove. Some other highlights: *brunch on weekends. *the entire menu. *all the drinks. *craft beers. *nice people. *swans in the canal. *some kind of brunch delivery service!? (I'll report back) The verdict: Barge House trumps The Proud Archivist in terms of pleasantness and food quality. TPA wins for wifi and generally just a lot of things going on at all hours/times/etc. For a nice lunch I'd pick Barge House. For real work I'd pick TPA (stronger wifi and usually accommodating). If I need to feel welcome, def Barge House. We all win because they are part of our wonderful community, so I'm pretty pleased to have made this a pretty stellar FTR Friday in February. Glad to put them on the Yelp map and hope yelpers will give them a go -- I don't think you'll regret it at all. read more

Delicious brunch here on Easter Monday, right after a heavy squash session at Britannia Leisure Center (literally 3min away). While you're asking, yes, I lost...that's why I needed food & drinks, the 2 things that could cheer me up at that very moment... The first room was fully booked unfortunately, that's where you want to be...right next to the water, with this massive amount of light coming in! We went for the classic full english & a "hot stuff" spicy version...and I was very surprised when they brought those entire bread bowls, which reminded of some delicious clam chowders I had in the US. No clams here, but everything you love about your original full english breaky...sausages, bacon, beans, egg & mushroom, all this deliciousness in a crunchy bread..Boom. Loved it. It took it's time to eat (it's a full bread) but I really enjoyed it..what I call a unique brunch with a twist. Staff is friendly, the draft cider was a delish as well, I'm very much looking forward to my next brunch here! Just hope I'll win next time... read more

This place rocks! I love the simplicity of their breakfast. Basically there is no menu, you just choose from two options: meat (sausage and bacon) or veg (mushrooms spinach). They put these in a scooped-out sourdough cob with cheese, slow roasted tomatoes and an egg then bake it. Delicious. Apparently at night they change the menu up depending on what's fresh (they were cooking up a rabbit stew when I was there for that evening). It sounded really good. Booze shelves are super full too and I reckon they could make a mean cocktail. They make amazing bloody Mary's. They infuse their vodka with chilli and cucumber and this makes for an awesome BM addition. The room set up is great and in summer this place will go off. There are tables and chairs outside that overlook the canal which will be perfect when there is sun. The inside has spaces that are available to hire for functions. There is a potential disco room. The staff are really great too. One of the owners/chefs is French and an other is usually on the floor. And, most importantly, they make very good coffee. read more

This place is fun! I loved their breakfast in bread, we tried smoked salmon and hot stuff. They were both amazing and literally everybody is coming for this bread bowl. I only saw these edible bowls on the tables :) Quite delicious! The place is on the Regent's Canal which is a very nice location. They have outside seats. The waiter was amazing, quite friendly. It was not a special day or holiday, so we just got in and be seated directly, but the place was quite full. read more

Went to try out the much 'grammed "breakfast in bread" in Hoxton with my friend. Nice rustic place by the canal- what you would expect for Hoxton really. The food came, I was impressed, chatting away to my friend. Please tell me why a dog kept coming to the restaurant, weaving through our table and other tables inside and outside as well? I think dogs are cute in pictures and when they are on a leash and firmly by their owner's side, not when they are trying to get between my legs at brunch! Also I have an insane fear of dogs - dont ask me why. I won't apologise or explain myself. I should not have to!! I spoke to one of the waitresses and she was very helpful. Said the dog belonged to another business owner. She actually went to have a word with them. 10 minutes into our meal this dog is back again weaving through our table. I spoke to another waiter; this one wasn't as sympathetic - he was giving me this get over your self look and actually said they couldn't do anything about it.. and the dog comes in to "vaccum up the food between the tables". Errrr??? Shortly after having a word with him, the dog is back again. This time I'd had enough, I wanted to just pay the bill and get out of there. Even as I was paying, the dog was back. Then as I waited for my friend to finish her meal, the dog was back again. In what world is this cool? What if I brought my pet crocodile cos I just loooove crocodiles you know. And I decide not to put him on a leash cos Coco is friendly; really he is! Would that be ok? (If you couldn't tell I am being sarcastic) I shouldn't have to put up with this at a restaurant. Tucked in the corners on Shoreditch is one of the best brunch places in London and was a great way to end my semester abroad in London. Me and my friends had one thing in mind and that was to order their Breakfast in Bread. I found The Barge House through Eater London's Instagram account.The service was average and nothing spectacular but the bread bowl was something else. I typically steer clear of sour dough because it's typically too sour for my taste buds but this place won my approval! Their bread comes in fresh from Better Health Bakery, a bakery in East London. The food was fantastic! I ordered the Smoked Salmon bread bowl and loved every bite. There wasn't too much salmon and tasted so fresh. The presentation was great and looked mouth watering. Coming from San Francisco where chowder bread bowls are served along the water, this was a fresh take on a childhood favorite! The vibe is warm and hip and has a great view of the local canals. Would highly recommend The Barge House if you're looking for a great brunch spot. Tip: We had to make a reservation online which was nice because we didn't have to worry about finding a seat - even though it wasn't too busy when we got there. read more

My friend and I went for a lovely Sunday morning stroll along the canal, with no particular brunch destination in mind but knowing that there were a number of options along the water in the Haggerston area. One of the first we encountered was Barge House, a place I'd never heard of, but which looked totally up our alley. We inquired if there was a table available, and were seated in a back "lounge room" that I think is the only place available for walk-ins. The front room is an airy, sunny space that is busy and bustling, whereas the back looks like it is used for movie nights and has a strange array of small tables, sofas, and other non-standard dining arrangements. In any case, we were hungry, short on time, and had seen some of the signature breakfast loaves come out so we took one of the last available tables. Basically what they do is to take the equivalent of a bread bowl, which back home we used to fill with clam chowder, and instead fill it with all your standard brunch ingredients. There was a full English (though still with a lot of veggies!), and my friend went for the vegetarian option, while I got one with smoked salmon. Inside, we had cheese, spinach, tomato, mushrooms, leeks, and a runny egg, and I had smoked salmon (that ended up partially cooked because of the hot ingredients nearby) and she had avocado. It is served on a wooden cutting board and you are given a sturdy serrated knife to take on the task of eating it. It's a tricky thing to navigate, but thankfully less messy than I imagined! We saw that some neighbouring tables had been served two bread bowls on one cutting board, and I think that would have been much more challenging. I love the concept and I think this could be a great spot if we booked ahead and got a seat in the front room. I was also fairly impressed with the level of service, as we did not get forgotten despite the fact that we were away from the main action. They did, however, run out of most of their freshly squeezed juices and I thought the orange juice that we got, served with a ton of ice, was definitely not worth the same £4.50. Overall, I had a fairly enjoyable dining experience and I would give this place another shot. read more

Great veg brunch here a few weeks ago. I got the veg bread bowl with no egg and it was great. It contained cheesy goodness, spinach, asparagus, roasted tomatoes, etc. Really a lovely dish. Generally I love the Barge House, it's the perfect place to hang out and have a cider in the sunshine. Buuuuut I feel the food really lets it down. We went there yesterday for brunch and the only things on offer on the menu were breakfasts baked into a loaf of sourdough. I don't know about you but I don't want to eat a loaf of bread for breakfast and pay £12 for the privilege. They have literally nothing else on offer on the menu at the weekend till 3pm. Well, you could order an entire crab for £28 but I think I'll pass. The bread bowl things are ok, I tried some of my friend's vegetarian one and it was nice enough. I went by myself and I felt like I was a complete afterthought and in the way. They set up a folding table that I couldn't even put my legs underneath because it was so small. All the other tables had jugs of water but I had to wait a long time just to be given a glass. I will say that the Breakfast in Bed was delicious, although the bread was so hard it cut my mouth. One of my favourite places for brunch in London. Me and my flatmate come here on a pretty regular basis and the food is always great along with the service. I have also taken most of my friends and pretty much all of my family when they come to visit me in London, and everyone absolutely adores it. Such a fun concept in a great location. I think I gained 5kg when I discovered the Barge House breakfast in bread was located just 1km away from me and I'm not even mad about it. I was a frequent visitor here (at least twice a month) when I lived in London and already miss this place so much. The vegan breakfast in bread is my favourite because it comes with tomatoes to soak up the bread when you're done eating all the insides. My bf loves the spicy one and everyone I took here never left disappointed with their meals. If you're an early riser and plan to be here by 10am, I would make a reservations. If not, expect to wait a little but it is 100% worth the wait. I can't wait until I'm back in London to come here. read more

Fabulous little bistro! We had the "surf 'n turf" with delicious fresh crab from Cornwall (huge!) and a juicy ribeye steak. Made for the perfect entrée...of course to have room for the homemade tiramisu... YUM!! The staff are very friendly, always a good laugh and the atmosphere has a home-like feel but yet still very shabby chic in its own right. Very clean and the playlist is awesome...at least that evening was a Motown kinda night :) We love supporting local businesses and the Barge House is one we'll go back to time and again. Worst customer service I ever experienced in my life. Sat at a table while my friend was ordering drinks and went to the bathroom. I was stopped and questioned by a lady about why I was there and why I was trying to access their bathroom as she thought I was not a customer of the bar. I had to show to the lady where I was sat . I went after hearing great reviews, and admittedly the food was nice however the overall experience was not. Firstly, I was not given a menu until 20 minutes after having been sat down and asking for the menu twice. I then ordered a coffee after finally getting the attention of a server. The coffee then arrived cold. My friend and I then ordered our food, which as aforementioned was nice albeit overpriced. After we finished, we had yet another long wait for a server, this time to bring us our bill. We asked to pay for the bill 50/50 which meant we both had to pay £19.35 each, when I told the server this they replied and said 'erm is it okay if I just charge you £19.50, I don't really like odd numbers haha' all whilst typing in that value anyway. I was really taken aback by this, I didn't even want to pay the service charge already on the bill but at this point I didn't care anymore and just wanted to get out of there. Obviously an extra 15p is not the issue here but I think the way this server behaved was just rude and unprofessional, perhaps they were trying to come across as charming but come on, read the room. Ultimately, the food is nice, but nice food can be found anywhere. The way a customer is treated is what determines whether they will come back. read more
