The bar studio is my happy place. Elaina and team have created an inspired space and supportive community that have been my oasis through everything from pregnancy to pandemic to parenting. I originally discovered The Bar Method back in 2017. Barre is deceptively challenging, and I was quickly humbled by the workout. I remember grabbing heavy hand weights when I first walked into the barre studio, since I was accustomed to throwing around a lot of weight in CrossFit...and then wasn't even able to make it through warm up! Since that day, I religiously attended barre four times per week, and it became my sanity amidst the chaos of being a business owner, mom, boss, wife, etc. When I found out I was pregnant with my second child, the instructors were supportive, initially maintaining confidence while privately demonstrating modifications. I was blessed with an easy pregnancy, and I attribute a large part of that to barre keeping me disciplined and strong. I continued taking classes throughout my entire pregnancy until my daughter decided to make a quick entrance into the world...and I gave birth in the car on our way to the hospital! I love bar method! I had no idea prior to coming here what it was lol my friend sent me the deal for $45 for 45 days unlimited so I said why not! Bar is birthed out of dance so if you're not privy to all that it feels weird at first, but you just have to trust the process lol After you purchase your classes you can then you download their mobile app. From there you can tap on the classes available that you want to attend. They have a late charge and make sure to be early because the shut the doors. The workouts are unlike anything I've experienced before lots of isolated muscle movements and dance like movements. Staff were super friendly but my instructor came over to bother me too much. She gave me too many needless corrections and would call me out over the mic. Not a way to ease someone into barre. And a lot of the corrections were questionable. For ex, it shouldn't matter what stance you are in when doing tricep kickbacks as long as you are isolating movement at the elbow joint so I was very shocked when she made me go into a stance wider than shoulder width as it made me less stable than what I was originally doing before. I'd like to think I know how important form is considering I am a certified strength & conditioning coach. Although I recognize that barre is different with different goals in mind so I guess I am just used to a weight training mindset. I've only tried barre and pilates classes recently, just never here. I just feel that because of that it wasn't a good first time for me. If it were someone else who has no experience in barre or fitness i feel for them as they probably wouldn't feel encouraged to come here because they would be corrected the entire time. I personally want to come to a workout class knowing that I am doing awesome and putting in the work, not that I'm doing everything wrong. I also didn't like the fact that she brought the class's attention to me being a new student. Other than that, I appreciate the location instructions along with studio policy being clear on website and in reminder email! The Bar Method is my self-care happy place: reliable as an everyday workout, friendly staff and patrons even if you're as introverted as me, free and open parking, easy to schedule even last minute, and reliably a good full-body workout no matter how often you go. Like all workouts, there's a little learning curve, but if you pay close attention to all the cues given, your body finally clicks and you can feel the exact muscles you're supposed to be isolating. Each exercise targets very specific areas, and in an hour, you've worked through your entire body, but ready to come back for more the next day! Years ago, I ruptured a ligament in my knee and had to do 2 years of PT since the only other fix was a surgery my orthopedic surgeon buddies all advised against. Barre has really been the only workout I've found that mimics PT, except that I love going to it. It manages to target all the supporting muscles around my bad knee and the instructors can always give modifications and do adjustments to make sure you're getting the optimum efficiency of your workout. read more

Thank God for an open house I was finally able to try "barre yoga". The place is actually quite easy to miss since the building is not facing the street and there are no signs. It's on the upper level of Step-N-Up. They have ample parking spaces and it's free. (Just be mindful, some of the spots says no parking for BM customers). The studio is so beautiful and kept clean with its white, gray, "so-ho" ambiance. Every body is so welcoming.i first sign-up and got a free tour. There's a locker, shower area. Free towels to use as well. Don't forget your non-skid socks. They do sell it there too! I attended a mixed work-out with 2 instructors (30mins each). It's actually very interesting but with killer moves due to repetition. Think about straight 30 push ups, minutes of planks and squatting on different forms. My legs were shaking and i definitely feel the burn! I like how it's a work-out separating each muscle group. You have to use some light weights, yoga straps, foam, soft mats etc. They have free water dispenser there too. Thank you so much for that open house! After learning about the diagnosis of my joint health, I tried to become more active in the gym. I love Zumba and Volleyball but after trying to take 3 classes a week, my knees and ankles would feel the pressure. I've also hurt my wrist trying to lift in a standard gym which left me a month to recover. I often felt unfocused without someone to guide me about exercises. I've tried Barre after a ballet teacher at a friend's music studio. It was a smaller bar class (Max 4 people) and both looked so easy and yet so hard. I lost weight and felt my pants looser. I tried it for maybe 3 months but the studio closed and I was once again trying to find another workout. I stumbled on Barre Method Honolulu in 2017 and tried a groupon and I found myself in a tough workout that found myself swearing under my breath. yet the instructors would be mindful and correct my posture because the main trick about little movements is that if your posture is wrong, it's easy. The instructors are pretty hands-on. I've tried another barre class in another state as i was in school for a bit but when i returned to Hawaii, I knew I wanted to return to Honolulu. Here are some things I liked about Bar Method Honolulu Specifically. The location 1) There is a large lot and even street parking if needed. 2) there is a window to the Humane Society, so while I try to disassociate from the workout, I can look at the volunteers walking the dogs. 3) Having it on the second floor means that no pedestrians see me struggling from the outside. 4) It's near some good places to eat. Fukuya and Ginas are some of my favs. The exercise 1) Don't be fooled. It's tough as hell. 2) It allows adjustments for injuries and pregnant people in different trimesters. 3) the low impact allows me to keep coming back 4) the focus on different muscles and the wide array of exercises, keeps me engaged and on my toes of whats next. 5) it gives me an hour to focus on my body instead of the stresses of work The instructors 1) They are hands-on and do adjustments. and catch me when I'm doing something that may harm myself like relaxing my wrists in exercises. 2) Their music choices vary and really depend on the instructors. 3) When there are instructors-in-training, they provide free community classes. 4) Outside instructors come by to guest teach sometimes (As much as my initially dread taking a Chelsea class, I am encouraged by how she catches me trying to make it easier for myself, and encourages me to do tougher things when i want to quit) The Boss Lady: Elaina 1) I look forward to the different themes that come up each season with decorations 2) which usually comes with a game to win free socks 3) celebrations for pregnancies and class milestones 5) tons of donation opportunities that have links to the bar ohana 6) Teaches a tough class 7) socks are so cute (she looks out for XL large ones for me) 7) Brinkley! They have helped me find jobs, work on a resume, eat together, and celebrate birthdays, milestones, and babies! I have brought so many female friends to Bar Method and it's a humbling and exhilarating experience when we finish a tough class together. I've also made friends that I wouldn't have never met outside of Barre. I've also impressed my guy friends with how many and form of my push ups. I love how i can go on a hike and not feel any back or exhaustion and i can go back to barre class the next day. I have been going to classes at The Bar Method Honolulu since 2015 and it has become my go-to fitness routine! All my life, I never considered myself sporty or fit but after joining The Bar Method I feel much stronger, stand a little taller, and love my Bar Method 'Ohana. 6:00 am classes are my fave and they are in high demand - for good reason. Many of the members in this early morning class have been doing Bar Method since the very beginning of this studio and they have formed an amazing community that loves hanging out and catching up before class and also pushes each other to new depths every day! When I first started with The Bar Method, I absolutely adored taking class from Elaina and could not imagine anyone teaching as well she does. She gives clear verbal instructions, personalized adjustments, and cracks the funniest jokes right when you need it most. I am happy to report that, as the owner of both Honolulu and Kailua studios, Elaina doesn't have to teach all the classes on her own anymore because she has assembled a line-up of outstanding instructors along with a caring staff who I look forward to seeing behind the desk every time I walk through the door. My favorite instructors are Kelly, Erica, Susan and Carey but you honestly can't go wrong. What a great workout! I've been coming to this studio for about a year now and it never gets easier (which is a good thing). Located off of King Street next to the Humane Society on the second floor of a two story building. Free parking in the parking lot. Look for the signs that say where you can/can't park for Bar Method. They offer bar method, bar express, bar move, and bar restore. My favorite is bar express because in 45 minutes, they kick your booty and you get a good workout! I usually buy the 10 class pack when they have a special because as much as I would like to go more often, I can't seem to make it that often as life gets in the way. The packs expire within 6 months so it gives me enough time for 10 classes to be used up. The specials they offer is such a great deal for people like me who have another gym membership. Unlike other barre studios, this one is carpeted. I feel like it's easier on your feet and knees. They also use cushions to help modify some moves. Modification definitely helps to become stronger until you may not need it anymore. I appreciate this for sure, as I am not THAT strong! All instructors are great as they seem to be trained consistently. I haven't had a bad instructor and would recommend them all. 1000 For those who know me well, you've probably heard me talk about the Bar Method. Growing up I was never passionate about fitness. The Bar Method changed all of that for me. Their format of low impact / high intensity classes quickly captured my interest, but the Honolulu studio's loving and nurturing community is what captured my heart. The Bar Method Honolulu has been my favorite self-care practice for many years now. The instructors helped me to continue safely working out during all phases of my pregnancy, and I attribute a large part of my quick recovery from child birth to the lovely and hard-working employees of this studio! When I moved back home after decades of living away, I tried many sports exercise programs here. So glad I found The Bar Method 5 years ago! I've been coming 3 to 4 times a week - virtually during lockdown. Why? My friend and I have been trying to find a new workout passion, I told her how I was curious to try a barre workout, and lucky for us she told me how Bar Method had free tryout class for this weekend. I had a bit of trouble finding the studio, but that was due to me being new to Hawaii, and getting lost in Honolulu easily. Lucky for me they had a couple spots in their parking lot, so no street parking for me! We were told to show up fifteen minutes prior, it's best to wear leggings or ones that at least go past your knees, you can purchase grip socks but the floor is covered in carpet, so normal socks work fine. Be prepared to have jello legs for a day, you will shake during your first workout, but I was told to embrace the shake and don't worry about not looking experienced, have fun with it. I can definitely say this was a lot harder compared to when I did ballet as a kid! Studio was nice and clean, but locker room and showed, they even had wraps and mimosas waiting for us after our workout. I had a lot of fun, and I'm thinking about taking advantage of their deal and signing up. read more

I am such a fan of Bar Method, especially in comparison to other barre classes. The thing that sets apart the Bar Method is their instructors and the safety of their classes. They train their instructors so well and no matter where you go to Bar Method, you know you're getting similar instruction. The positions that they put your body into are really focused on correct alignment and posture. I've been to other barre studios that have left me feeling sore but in all the wrong places. At Bar Method, you'll leave feeling like you've had a great workout but you won't feel like you're pulling something or tweaking something out. This is super important and the biggest thing that sets the Bar Method apart. The Honolulu studio is located above Step N Up and Honey Glazed Ham. Parking can be really cramped but the studio itself is nice. I love the little lounge area when you first enter. They have nice lockers and a shower area. I love that they really keep the carpets clean focusing on making sure people where their socks before entering. I'm so glad I got to check out this studio. It's a great place and really sets the bar(re) for exercise studios in Honolulu! read more

Barre wasn't something I was planning to add-on to my regular workout routine so I am thankful to Groupon because now I am hooked! At first, I had no idea what it was. But I'm always down to try different workouts especially at a discounted price lol And I ended up loving it and purchased 10-class pack so I can continued going after my Groupon expired. The studio is conveniently located by the humane society. Nice, Cute, and Clean studio with lockers, shower, and super friendly staff. The instructors are the best. Very nice, helpful, and encouraging. There's a private parking lot (come 10 mins before class because that's when the class prior is leaving so plenty space will open up). And if you're hungry right after class? So many eateries nearby you can walk to! Dagon, Torikyu, Imanas Tei, Sushi King, Naru, etc etc. But why not 5-stars? I wish it was more affordable and offer more classes on the weekends lol For a single drop-in class is $29. For 10-pack classes is $219 For Unlimited Monthly is $179 with auto renew. Simply put, Bar Method is a gem. If you are putting off joining Bar because of the pandemic I can assure you that this is the cleanest and safest place on the island to work out. The owner, Elaina, has gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of her Ohana (all Bar members) including adding UV filtration, sprays to clean equipment, adequate spacing of members, etc. Every single member in every single class I have taken since pandemic began wears their mask and wears it correctly. Everyone is accountable and respectful of others. I have been coming to classes for the last 3 years and I have come to love it more and more the longer I am part of this Ohana. This is a place like no other where you will become friends with many amazing people and where it feels like you are with Ohana! As a Physical Therapist, I know form is so important in avoiding injury while exercising. I have taken Bar classes at many different studios over the years. I can assure you that Bar Method is the best! The teachers are all superiorly trained to demonstrate an exercise and then watch the members to ensure form is correct throughout the entirety of class. They are not only well trained but they are all beautiful people inside and out. While it is not a cheap workout, the individualized attention to form and the heart warming environment are more than worth every penny. read more

Updated review 4.5.16 I received a sweet email from The Bar Method wishing me a Happy Anniversary today. A year flew by so quickly! I usually try to attend class at least 3 times per week. They have morning daily classes but no evening classes Friday through Sunday (they need time to relax too). The classes are challenging but fun. It requires focus on posture, form & breathing too & I consider the classes great for stress relief. After attending classes at least 3x per week, unless I'm traveling, sick or some other scheduling conflict, I can say that The Bar Method has helped me obtain: more energy, better posture (no slouching), improved flexibility, muscle definition in arms & legs and I'm overall stronger & leaner. I was prepared for a ski trip that I took a few months ago & my legs weren't sore at all from skiing thanks to the conditioning from The Bar Method. During my annual physical, my doctor told me that I burn 1200 calories when resting (thanks to the muscles that I developed from this workout) & we were both surprised to discover that. I am a middle age women who has bad back knee-ache etc from playing tennis for long time. No back ground of yoga or ballet Sometime I need to depend on pain pill to do daily thing and I did not like it Physical therapy and massage cost me lots of $$$$ but the therapy only gave me temporary relief I realize i will not be better unless I need to fix my body by my self. I will be the last person to go trendy Barr class and I am still the worst student here but after I attended few classes, I could see the improvement !! my balance is back and core gets stronger. My challenge for this year was to try something new every month. Or at least every few months! And The Bar Method was something I've been eyeing out for a few months now. And then the new year special came in for January-$89 for unlimited classes for 6 weeks! I thought what a perfect time to join and see what the buzz was about. I'll be honest I hate taking classes by myself-I love experiencing things with a friend BUT I def wanted to get over my fear of doing things alone and whoop my okole back in shape First day at The Bar Method was exactly what I expected and so much more! Signing up for the 6 week special online was a breeze. You make reservations (highly recommended) for classes online as well. I always do my reservations the day before and I've always gotten the class I want. Although afternoon classes tend to book quickly so book those early! I'm an early bird so I love my morning classes. The girls there are as sweet as pie !and they take the initiative to remember your name! I value that soo much! Taking the time to remember each of us by name is no easy feat but they take that extra step and make you feel valued! Thank you Ladies Anyways... first day of class I checked in at the front desk and let them know I'm a new client and right away they gave me a tour. Also come earlier on your first day so you can fill out paperwork and get acquainted with everyone! On to my class experience-whew! Expect to feel the burn and lots of shake! But don't worry that's a good thing! It def keeps me coming back for more! Give yourself grace-you WILL get used to the lingo and the moves within time. Def a very non judgemental atmosphere here and everyone is here striving to do better than yesterday! Instructors are great! They come in and adjust you accordingly and make sure your posture and form are on point. Don't worry they're not picking on you! Lol It just shows they truly care and they do it in such a gracious and calming way and I def appreciate it! Music and playlist is amazing and works perfectly with your workouts! Well, I'm 53 years old and needed to do something about my aging body! ha! My friend intro ducted me to The Bar Method being her friend Steph is owner and I quickly said YES! I signed up for the 45 day challenge in hopes to do the following... 1. Get some of this belly FAT cottage cheese and return it back... 2. Get stronger so I don't hurt myself doing things like walking :) ... 3. Not having to make a UGH when I get off from sitting to standing 4. Tighten up EVERYWHERE 5. Maybe lose some pounds. 6. Do the 30 pushups on my toes without stopping and collapsing on the SOFT amazing RUG 7. Do the splits (which i have never done before) 8. Learn to remember names better, because ALL my instructors here remember my name and everyones name even when i walk in the door the next day! Lovely peeps here. Well, today i did my 9th class, everyday straight! I feel INCREDIBLE! I have so much energy that yesterday I took 2 classes! :) And I don;t even huff up the stairs anymore. Also, my cottage cheese stomach is slightly changing. :) What I LOVE about Bar is that everyday there are 6-10 classes available, so at least one will work in my schedule. The instructors here are very thorough and help you throughout the class to do the exercises properly. They are not doing it with us, they are watching and helping. I love their attentiveness to our safety... as you can see, i get corrected a lot! :) After class, since my body is all warmed up, I stretch for 15 min after. It is nice because the rug allows such a comfortable stretch. If you are wondering why there is rug and question if it is clean.. Yes.. we all have to wear socks, and throughout the class the temperature is very comfortable so your body doesn't overheat and drip sweat! ;) For me, this is the BEST part because I don't like to get over heated, but my muscles do the work still. Overall, as a business, they are 6 stars in customer service, customer happiness and friendliness. I do recommend this to my friends and already have bought 3 of my friends to join me. I have been attending Bar Method classes for 6 weeks now and can honestly say this is an amazing kick your butt workout. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Always greeting you right as you walk in the door. Instructors encourage you to do more and push yourself further. If you're thinking it's not for me or it's too hard or you're ashamed of getting fixed/adjusted too much don't be. This place is not that kind of place. My fitness background before Bar Method was very, very minimum. Maybe a short 15 min walk with my pup but that's about it. After my 6 weeks here I can definitely see a change in my strength, posture, and just over all well being. I highly encourage everyone to try these classes. That includes men too. No shame. I would also highly suggest at least a month commitment because I didn't feel like it clicked till about week 2. I have taken classes at both the Honolulu and Kailua locations and enjoy both. The Honolulu studio has a little more amenities but the Kailua one is just as good. The equipment is newer and is located right above Cinnamons which could be a positive/negative ; P The only downside is that these classes are kind of pricey. I'm trying to convince my husband to let me continue but so far no luck. Hope this was helpful and hope you enjoy these classes just as much as I have. read more

This was my first time going to a bar method class with some friends. We were trying it out because of the great reviews we had heard about it. Upon entering, the staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. The reason for the two stars is because we did not feel as though our instructor, Tyler, was very helpful for teaching new students. As a teacher, I find it really hard to learn when something is not demonstrated first. I also felt called out on as she constantly verbally pinpointed our mistakes without doing any sort of real positive reinforcement throughout the class. Our instructor did not show us how to do anything and kept spewing out a lot of directions without explaining what it meant or how to do it. My friend and I felt thoroughly confused and had to keep watching others to figure out how to do things. I think I would have enjoyed my time more if the instructor had taken a little more time to teach/demonstrate us what we were doing and explained what we were doing more. Again as a newcomer I didn't understand most of what she was saying. read more

I purchased the unlimited 2 week pass on Groupon and did 2 class of Bar Method so far. They have various classes from as early as 6 am to 6:30 pm. I usually do the 9:30 am or 6:30 pm classes. At first, I thought it was a bit easy and was keeping up with everything but I definitely felt the burn the next day. I came for a second class and my muscles are already feeling it. I love this workout because you feel a difference with minimal sweating. I don't have to shower after and can just go about my day. The space is very nice and the classes make good use of weights and cushions. The instructors are super encouraging and adjust your positioning often. Great facilities and clean space. I've been wanting to change up my workout besides lifting weights and running and came across The Bar Method on Yelp. Fortunately there was a $99 for 45 days special so I took a chance and tried it out. I've been to five sessions so far and I'm loving it! The instructors are attentive and encouraging. Plus I like the music. One hour goes by pretty quickly even though my muscles are pretty sore afterward. The studio and bathrooms are clean, and there's parking! I recommend The Bar Method to anyone who wants a different and enjoyable workout. I think the monthly membership is a bit out of my price range, but I am going to try to make the most of my remaining time at The Bar Method and may purchase some classes afterward. I got a Groupon for two months of unlimited Barre classes and it was well worth it. The quality of teachers are consistent and of the highest caliber--surprisingly, after two visits, the teachers and staff behind the desk remembered my name. They are friendly and make the experience feel welcoming. Expect to use muscles that have been neglected which is one of the reasons you get results. I feel more toned (you have to dedicate 4 times a week for immediate results), especially in my core. There are several classes to choose from. I really like The Bar Method. I wanted to get my body in shape, improve muscle tone and flexibility. I was startled, and a little depressed, when my eye caught a glimpse of loose skin from my underarm. Yikes! I have had back surgery, so I have to be very careful about what I do. I like being in a class. I like the energy. And exercise is absolutely vital to my mind as well as my body. But what to do? A friend said, "Try the Bar Method". Her teenage daughter was. They had a great deal for the first timers. A reduced fee with unlimited classes in the first month. In the first month, I watched my body change. My stomach became taunt. My muscles were lengthening. My stamina improved. I could tell my posture, the dead age giveaway, was much better! Even the skin in neck area was tightening up. Ya! I put in the work. You get out of it what your put in. But it was the instructors who help make the magic happen. They'll gently correct my position if I'm off, so you do get the most our of the movement. And they tell you when you're doing it right. So what's the Bar Method? It's a little ballet and a little yoga. It's small movements done strategically to work your body without impact on the joints. You want that lean, slim dancer body don't you? Oh c'mon, don't deny it! You want it! Hey, I want it! We all want it! But hun, you ain't gonna get it sitting in front of your phone and waiting for a genie to grant you three wishes! So get up and take a barre class! I heard about this place from attending Yelp Kicks Butt: The Bar Method and I couldn't pass up the deal to sign up for a month of unlimited classes! Plus, Elaina (the owner) sent out a postcard to all the event participants thanking them for attending! So awesome! She really does care about her clients! Best customer service I have received for any type of fitness/exercise company. (And I've tried a BUNCH!) The studio is amazingly clean and organized with a white, cushioned carpet. It's air conditioned so you remain cool throughout the entire workout. Showers, bathrooms, and lockers with keys are available for use at no additional cost. Small towels are provided for your workout. After the workout is complete, there's water, tea and coffee available. Parking is available in their private lot but can get full. The studio is located in a brown building on the 2nd floor. Dress Code: Pants must fall below the knees. Tops must cover midriff. Must wear socks that cover your entire foot (you can bring your own or purchase from Bar Method). Recommend grip socks but you don't need it. I wouldn't wear super baggy clothes. The instructor has a better chance of checking your alignment/posture with tighter clothes. (Just think yoga attire.) Only clear liquids allowed in class. No gum chewing. Cell phones must remain in lockers during the class. Barre classes. What the heck are these?! These classes are low-impact and high rep full body workouts. They incorporate very small movements (or pulses) until your muscles begin to fatigue. Basically you go to the point where you SHAKE! Like a salt shaker! Shake it like a salt shaker! :) However, barre exercises focus not only on muscular fatigue, but heavily emphasizes proper alignment and posture. You begin with a warm up so be sure to grab weights from the bins - probably one light and one heavy pair (which really is only 1 to 4 lbs). This class works your quads, inner thighs, calves, shoulders, triceps, biceps, glutes and core primarily. (They call your butt your "seat". I was a little confused at first when the instructor was giving directions.) Instructors are very helpful, friendly and professional. They all provide corrections and demonstrations. The instructors know their student by name (and even by the second class, they immediately greeted me with "Good morning, Traci" as I walked through the door.) Each class is slightly different but still very similar. Some exercises are repeated, especially the warmups. However, I never get bored (oh and lemme tell you...I get bored really easily). I still feel challenged at every class and it pushes me to get stronger so I don't feel so shaky each time! Its only been one week and I feel so much better! I'm more conscious of my posture (and I have poor posture) and my legs feel leaner! These classes are not geared towards a particular age group. There's both younger and older participants. It's mostly females but males are welcomed too! If you want a low-impact workout but something that will make your body work hard, this is it. If you're new to barre, there's a high chance you might be sore the following day! Unlimited classes are $175/month or $100 for the first month for new clients. I was lucky to sign up during a $65 for the first month promotion thanks to Yelp! :) If you want to buy individual classes, they have that as well. They offer classes throughout the day which makes it easy to squeeze one into your schedule. C'mon, its just one hour! You're probably thinking... $175/month?! Yes, thats what i though but...if you're a regular and go 3-5xs a week, the cost breakdown isn't bad at all! Hoping I get a little closer to that lean, slim dancer body! Bar Method = The excruciating things women will do to have an amazing BUTT Know that when you come here, you are going to get a full body workout that is going to make parts of your body hurt that you didn't even know existed. My girlfriend Olivia has been trying to get me to this studio for months and I knew it was going to be amazing because she's an extremely picky person. Located in Mo'ili'ili above the Honey Hams of Hawai'i, the Bar Method blew me away from the moment I walked in. The studio is modern minimalist and immaculately clean with a super soft white carpet that makes you feel as though you're at a grown-up girls slumber party. You'd think that a white carpet would get so dirty with the volume of people that go through this room but it was spotless as everyone who takes class is required to wear socks. You can wear your own socks but I'd recommend buying a pair of bar socks that have little nubbies on the bottom of them so you don't slip during poses. They've got lockers with keys, so no need to tote around a big bulky lock, as well as showers if you want to head to work right after. As we started our workout my friend Olivia pointed to the instructor's perfect 10 derriere and whispered "when I feel as though my legs are going to fall off I look at her butt and push through it!!! All the instructors have amazing bodies!" I laughed and then stopped laughing as the instructor walked us through different exercises which were a lot harder than they seemed. Like ballet, Bar Method is all about posture, technique and endurance. I workout five days a week and let me tell you, it was rough! The instructor was super helpful as she knew it was my first time there and helped to adjust my poses. Can we say "core workout that makes you wish you could pass out and have an out of body experience to get away from the burning pain?" Did it work? Was it worth it? Yes and yes. Your butt will love and hate you at the same time. My body felt and looked leaner the next day and if the studio was closer to my house I'd certainly be a regular. So this is my second review of The Bar Method. I think I've been coming here religiously for over a year now. And for reasons I cannot comprehend, it just doesn't get easier. Don't get me wrong, it's totally great. Because of all this yelping and my aging and ailing metabolism, I need the challenge and the workout. But seriously, come on. For those who do not know what a barre class is, it is an almost ballet-esque form of exercise. The exercises are specifically meant to work your muscles super intensely followed by strategic stretching to elongate and lengthen your muscles. And by super intense, I mean like muscle shaking intense. But that's not even a fair description of the process. I mean like "Oh my god, my legs are having a seizure!" kind of a intense. Sounds scary right? But not to worry, The Bar Method was developed by a group of physical therapists so the induced muscle seizures are done in a totally safe way. The emphasis is on exquisite form and perfect posture. Everything is connected to everything else. You can tell all difference with your shoulders pulled back and chin up. My flexibility range has gone up exponentially, further than it has with yoga (which is a bit boring for my taste). The only thing lacking is a true aerobic component. But they have an answer to that too, enter Bar Move. It's fabulous and widespread on the mainland, and rumor has it that there are plans to come to the Bar Method Honolulu studio, hopefully soon. I've introduced a bunch of friends to barre and they absolutely love the studio and the instructors. It's a super friendly atmosphere thats really welcoming. The first thing I tell them is that it needs to be understood that everyone shakes this way. And FYI, there is a groupon right now. So embrace the shake and just shake it off (the fat off). read more

This place is awesome. CLASS: You don't leave the class soaking in sweat, but your muscles will definitely be quivering. Even as a beginner, I can personalize and make adjustments to movements if I'm not strong or flexible enough. The instructors help assist and give feedback during class to make corrections. They will walk around and help you with your positioning. They also will tell you when you're doing something well, which is a great little boost of confidence in the middle of your workout. The instructors really make an effort in learning everyone's name (even when the class is packed!) so they can give you feedback. CLASS SCHEDULE: They offer a variety of classes in the mornings and evenings throughout the week. I really like the app, which makes it super convenient to sign up for classes online through my phone. STAFF: Staff and instructors are friendly and very welcoming. It can be intimidating going to a new place, but the staff greets you with a smile and "how are you" every time. FACILITY: Everything in the studio is so clean. There are lockers, restrooms, shower, and even towels are provided for your workout. And the small things like offering coffee/tea and mints go a long way to make clients feel welcomed and treated well. COST: Yes, the membership can be a little pricey. The first time I went, I paid for a regular class ($25) just to check it out. Then I signed up for the $100 unlimited one month trial and went as many times as I could and loved it. After trying it out for a month, I made the commitment to sign up as a regular member. Definitely try out the one month unlimited to see if you like the class before committing. read more

Elaina and Tiana a long with the rest of the staff is also amazing! Lots of adjusting which I love and it helps a lot with actually feeling the difference. Tip: Look at the schedule and see when the class before you gets out and go around that time to get a good parking. Parking is limited but I have been pretty lucky so far. read more
