Our first time ordering from Bake Works. We live in Smithville and by passed a few Smithville/Galloway bakeries to try something different. I ordered an 8 inch birthday cake which had lemon cake, raspberry filling and buttercream icing. Cake was nicely decorated and looked beautiful on our table. It was fresh, moist and flavorful. The lemon raspberry combo had just the right amount of tartness. This is a cute little neighborhood style bakery which had loads of delicious looking baked goods. What a beautiful store. I discovered this bakery two years ago and whenever I visit ocean city nj, i have to visit this place. So many delightful cupcakes and many varieties of chocolate covered pretzels. My favorite thing though is the cake pops!!! Around 12 different kinds. So good a d interesting flavors such as strawberry lemonade. This is a bakery that you need to go and not far off the bridge that leads to ocean city. Everything I bought here has been good. But their service is highly inconsistent. I gave them a stunning review 3 yrs ago BUT YESTERDAY they ruined everything. I called for a cookies a pretzel tray. I even told them I'd be there in half an hour to pick up. I also asked if I could pay ahead of time. I was on a tight schedule and needed to go in and out fast. I spent $60. They only had some lonely looking chocolate chips and some sparse looking pretzels. BUT nothing was ready! They insisted they did not know who took the order. Once I got them to do the order, I was not happy. It looked blah. I asked for owner. She was cold as ice and belittled my stress. The Oder was haphazard, ugly and unappetizing. No elephant, no bow, just a tray with an ugly plastic top on it. When I asked for a better looking tray, the owner said the plastic tray cover was better. I don't care, I wanted what I wanted! Her staff were rude. The one girl was full of hair all over her face and not pulled back and was totally unapologetic and didn't communicate. There was also a blond standing pertly and smirking at me and giving me an overlook with her arms crossed. And the owner couldn't have cared less that her staff made me late. She made a small but feeble effort but they made me late with an ugly tray of 2nd class looked like day old cookies. Only chocolate chips. The service was really bad and when I went to pay the owner stopped at tips and wanted me to put in a tip. I told her no! I worked in AC and I am a very generous tipper. But they had nerve asking me for a tip. Needless to say, I was highly disappointed. Their bake goods are usually good. I must have come on a bad day. But I will be back because their baker is good. But if I can find someone or a better bakery, I will. I was treated with so much distain, it hurts me to think about all the money I have spent there over the years. It's a shame. I discovered The Bake Works on Yelp while looking for a cake for my dad's 80th birthday as we were traveling down to Linwood, and I am so happy I found them! We ordered the cannoli cake and just did some basic decorations with writing. They were so helpful over the phone with what size to order and what types of fillings and decorations. It was stunning and so incredibly delicious. It's the first time for a cake that there were NO LEFTOVERS! Even my local family was impressed and kept asking the name of the shop. It's very hard to find a good bakery down the shore because most places just sell donuts and cookies. We were extremely delighted to find The Bake Works for a 40th birthday celebration down the shore. We got the lemon cake, with lemon filling and vanilla buttercream. I went with Bake Works for my engagement party because the venue I chose for my wedding works with them. Ordering the cupcakes was a breeze and the women that work there are super friendly; however, I'm not so jazzed about the taste. I had vanilla cupcakes with vanilla icing, but the consistency/texture was extremely dense akin to cornbread. Usually when this happens with cakes or cupcakes, it's due to over mixing the batter . They were so cute and looked great with the decorations, but the taste and consistency just weren't there. I ordered my wedding cake for my wedding this September 25th, 2022. I was very specific with Amanda and send her pictures of exactly what I wanted (seen below in the first photo). She told me she would be able to do it if I paid an extra $500 for a design fee. I said okay since this was my dream wedding cake..When I walked into my reception, I saw this (picture 2). I was told she would do piped little white buttercream flowers.. in person they were hard candy sugar flowers on wire not even cascading like the picture. I wanted a very specific colored blue flower design to match my bridesmaid dresses and decor and not only were the blues on this cake not matching each other (the crest was neon blue and the flowers were a gray blue)..they weren't even close to the picture style or color wise. I wanted a tall, narrow cake.. again.. just like the picture. I have voiced to amanda through many many emails what I wanted. To top it off, the cake itself was cream, not white. In the end it didn't feel like she cared enough to actually listen to what I wanted. If I am paying a $500 design fee, I expect it to be as close to what I wanted as possible. I have since emailed her twice after my wedding and she has chosen to ignore my emails. It was very upsetting to see the day of my wedding. It put a huge damper on my night and I felt embarrassed when my guest walked into the reception hall....and to not even get a response.. awful. read more

How bad does red velvet have to be for me to actually stop eating and throw it out? Pretty gosh darn bad, as I found out today. I've passed Bake Works several million times while going to Tunes, and figured today was just the perfectly leisurely day to stop in and check out their offerings. Inside is very brightly lit and clean. There are several child's-sized tables, at one of which there was a cake tasting being held. Picture 4 grown adults sitting around an actual round kiddie table, shoveling cake into their mouths. Priceless. Bake Works offers everything from cakes to cupcakes to cookies to covered pretzels to coffee. But you know what I came here for.....ohhhh yeaaaaaa! I immediately spotted a Red Velvet cupcake and a Red Velvet cake pop and asked for one of each, as well as a Peanut Butter cake pop, for good measure. At $5 for all three, the price would have been right, had the quality been. The staff didn't seem overly friendly or knowledgable, but that rarely deters me if the product they're putting out is enjoyable. Upon opening the box, I found all of my goodies strewn to one side, separated by a single flimsy piece of wax paper. Note to Bake Works: invest in some cupcake carriers, this was a horrible presentation and reflects poorly on you. Getting my feet wet, I tried the Red Vevlvet cake pop first. It was neither red nor velvety. In fact, the cake was brown...but not brown like chocolate. Brown like...dried blood. Ew. The cake was moist, but just didn't taste like the red velvet I so enjoy. The white chocolate coating on the outside tasted like mint, which was a horrid combination. This was actually gross, and I tossed it. The Peanut Butter cake pop was a small redemption. The chocolate coating was mediocre quality, but the inside was rich and creamy peanut butter. Great flavor and highly satisfying (or appetizing) if you're a peanut butter lover. Not gonna lie, I was scared to try the cupcake. I hate when red velvet's not good, it's so depressing. It ended up being pretty much the same story as the cake pop: brown cake, no distinguishing "red velvet" flavor. Something just tasted off about it. Also, the icing on the cupcake, though cream cheese, was so sickeningly sweet, it actually was burning the back of my throat. This, too, ended up being thrown out. I can't bear to eat bad red velvet! I will most likely return, only because they have an entire case devoted to covered pretzels. I wish I had gotten a picture of this; it was so sick looking. Pretzels covered with just about every imaginable topping: glittery pop rocks, oreos, m&ms, peanut butter chips, and of course chocolate. Will I ever get my red velvet fix here? I went yesterday right before they closed, only 15 minutes left and wasn't too sure if I should cuz I know how some people rush you when it's time for them to go home. Not these lovely ladies, they were so welcoming and very sanitary, changing their gloves constantly, double masked. Very clean atmosphere. I ordered the large canolis, cookies and cream cheese croissant. When I tell you I haven't had such fresh bakery in a long time. The filling of the cannoli was so soft and fresh, down to the chocolate chips, so fresh. Croissant was the perfect crust with fluffy, and the cookie was so soft and filling sooooo good. I ordered a vegan cupcake tray that was not edible, even for the kids. When I called and spoke to the owner I explained that the chocolate cupcakes even had a chemical taste. She informed me that they were delicious and she sells them all the time.. The owner told me that maybe vegan isn't my cup of tea. Fantastic cake! We arranged, from Atlanta, for a 60th wedding anniversary cake for our parents via emails with Amy, to be delivered to the Icona hotel in Avalon. The bakery did a spectacular job on the decorations-it was truly perfect. It was exactly what we asked for and just looked amazing. People couldn't stop staring at it. Additionally, the cake itself was excellent-we had the almond cake with strawberries and cream filling. The cake was moist, light, flavorful and the strawberries and cream were a delicious addition. Numerous people said it was the best cake they've ever had. We even had people asking about leftovers. Everyone I spoke to with the bakery was courteous, professional and helpful. Recently visited to grab a small cake for my birthday. I hadn't been to Bake Works in quite some time. My husband and I got married at Smithville Inn 16+ years ago and they used Bake Works. Ever since we were in love. All their cakes were delicious and moist. We made it a tradition to always get my birthday and anniversary cake there until about 8 years ago due to our child's allergies. Well long story short they are not what they used to be. The cake was flavorless, dry, crumbly, and there was an excessive amount of super sweet buttercream icing. My husband and I both had a piece (well half because we threw the rest away) and I dumped the rest of the cake in the trash. It's sad when ACME bakery is tastier than there especially when paying so much more. We will not be returning or suggesting there to family/friends. read more

I went to The Bake Works. There were two women ahead of me--one was paying & the other began to place her order. As I was waiting, two gentlemen enter the place of business. Once the lady was finished paying for order, the worker asked who was next. At that time, the gentlemen pointed to me & I raised my hand. The worker proceeded to help one of the gentleman that came in AFTER me. He spoke up & stated, "She was next in line."--pointing to me. The worker said, "Oh you're just picking up an order I will take you!"--continuing to ignore that I was next in line. At this point, I said, "WOW!!" and walked out. Once back in my car, I called to speak with someone about what just happened. I was told that they were very busy & the worker needed me to wait!! I waited long enough until my turn & she still took the gentleman in front of me. NO EXCUSE!! This is how you treat your customers when it's busy??!! I am very disappointed--as I have always purchased my cakes at The Bake Works. Perhaps it was the color of my skin?? Nonetheless, I have filed a complaint with the BBB & will not patronage this establishment again!!!!!! read more

I went in today for my birthday cupcakes , chocolate with vanilla icing for me and a carrot cake for my husband. I was very excited and looking forward..... what a big disappointment!!! The chocolate was so so dry it crumbled while I was eating it !! This happened before but I decided to give it another try !!! You apparently are not that busy during the week so please check your products before selling them . Perhaps you are good for placed orders , but not for walkins !!! I ha e you a second chance and you failed ( at 325 per cup cake ) never again . I could get better products at a grocery store , at least they have an expiration date !!! read more

Went in for a treat, we got lemon raspberry squares that were out of this world. Took home a chocolate moose cupcake and had it the next day and it was also terrific.
