I really love spending afternoons out here. Tucked away behind the Shellfish company seafood market, you always feel like it is a secret that only the cool Virginia Beach peeps know about. Couple of TVs, cold beer, breeze coming of the water--I always relax and enjoy myself. Since serving food here was sort of an afterthought, the menu is small and simple. I would highly recommend the nachos that are covered in queso--heck yes! They also have mini pizzas and a few other finger foods. Pretty decent Happy Hour mon-thurs 3-7, mondays wine night $12/bottle. What I don't love about this place is that I can't eat anything from the seafood market out here. I think they are totally missing out on a platinum opportunity here--do you know how special and unique it would be for people to walk into the market and pick out a fish or some soft shells and have them prepared to eat out on the every inviting "Back Deck"??? I asked once to have them give me a raw tuna filet on a plate (meaning no prep for them) and they still said no. I highly recommend you spend a few bucks on a real kitchen and offer your faithful barflies a tasting of your seafood market, boosting your business for both the market and the back deck. You know, it is really torture to see all that fresh seafood sitting in there, but yet you can't eat it. My other major criticism is that the bar stools are horrible--ladies, if you are wearing a dress or shorts, you better bring something to sit on because the little wicker barstools will quickly dig into you legs and cause a nice crinkled look when you get up from your seat. In all honesty, I think that any bar that doesn't have invest a little more in decent bar stools with a back to them doesn't really care if their customers are comfortable enough to stay around and spend money. It is worth it--I always keep in mind which places have comfy barstools. ***FYI: I heard a rumor that Back Deck may now be willing to serve some of the seafood from the market now. Alright. I'm finally leaving a review. I've visited four times in the last two weeks strictly for the view, and that is the only reason this establishment has taken my money . The service is not great, which is to be expected during COVID, but the food, my God the food is just atrocious. I tried the fish tacos twice- greasy and flavorless both times, the clams were FULL of sand, and the flatbread was just awful. I feel like the food standards have been lowered because of the view. I'll continue coming here, but I won't be ordering food. 10/10 for the view, 0/10 for the food. That's why it's getting a 3. I wish they would step it up. Wow. I thought I was done with this review, and I just ordered a vodka tonic and got a vodka sprite. No big deal, but the bartender insisted I was wrong, had the waitress taste it (bless her heart), and still insisted it was vodka tonic not vodka sprite. This time was primarily for some beers and the view, but did get some foodsies while hanging at the tables overlooking the Lynnhaven. So far, pretty much the same experience as before. But this time: SERVICE was Off The Chain Great! My little group was attended to promptly and courteously. Waters all the way around, assorted beers for those assembled. Want some food with that? No hurry, I'll check back with you in a bit. And did! And we ordered, and it was brought to us. So, in my view, the only thing that kept this place from a 5 star rating on the first visit was quickly and effectively fixed, and fixed well I might add. 5 Stars, hits the Must Do List. Nice atmosphere, poor service for dining. Dinner was ok, nothing fantastic. The only thing they didn't mess up was the beer in the bottles. Orange crushes were weak. Had the chicken wraps, tough and dry chicken. Chicken pizza was like a "chicken parm without the pasta and the parm, it wasn't very good..." to quote someone in our party. This is a 3.5 star review- because the view is stellar. You really get that chilled out vibe, looking out onto the water while Collective Soul's (only?) hit 'Shine' runs through your mind. The drinks were ok, nothing that stood out and maybe a bit too sweet (and this is coming from someone with the palette of a 12 year old). Crab dip decent, if not a bit heavy- but I mean, that's kinda the point. Every time I come to this place, I end up disappointed. First off, the seating is first come first serve, so literally have to awkwardly stalk people to get a table before the 30 other people that are waiting for a place to sit. Once you are done fighting people off of your table, you are handed a sticky menu to try to decide what you would like to order. We ordered the bbq chicken flat bread pizza, which came out in a decent amount of time and was surprisingly really good. Sadly, we also order a cup of gumbo, which we waited 1 hour for... only to find out that they ran out of it... I really just don't like the vibe of this place. It's always a cluster f***, there are flies everywhere, and the kitchen is always backed up. The view is nice, the food is ok, but I'd rather eat at one of the other establishments nearby. read more

My husband and I stopped here on Sunday evening after spending a beautiful week of vacation in Virginia Beach. This place has a beautiful view on the bay and was not very busy so we thought it would have been perfect for a quick bite WHAT AN ERROR!!. Service was so slow (again it was not busy), we waited over 15 minutes for 2 bottles of corona and 50 minutes to get a crab dip and 2 tacos and I am still waiting for the glass of water I asked for. Food was mediocre at the best, the crab dip was crabless and very greasy and tacos were empty (it took me a while to find the shrimp). Price were similar if not higher than the super popular touristic restaurants on the Broadwalk where we had amazing food and great service. read more

Great view, nice staff, small menu with decent food (we got flatbread pizza, salad, tacos), and some drinks. They get pretty busy (at least on the day we went it was a 75 degree winter day). We had a double date and had our infants with us and it was nice to sit outside. We got there around 4p on a Saturday before It got crowded as it shares parking lot with Bubbas and other restaurants. So number one is that this place does not close at midnight, they close whenever they decide.... so better call ahead to make sure they are open don't go off their hours. my husband and I wanted to get some appetizers and drinks on a Friday night and were literally RUSHED out!! We sat done and at 9:30 and they told us their kitchen was closing and if we wanted to order we had to do it soon. So I asked when they closed and the waitress told me, it based on volume and they close when they decide. We got our drinks and one appetizer than another waiter came and asked if our check was together or separate. We had a taste for seafood and a view so we decided to visit this location. For less than $100, we ordered two pounds of crab legs, half pound shrimp, fish tacos, and sweet teas to go. When I went to pick up my order the drinks were missing and their was a language barrier when I let the cashier know. The cashier eventually alerted the waitress who seemed like she had an attitude when I reminded her about my drinks and requested straws. After a 15 minute drive home, we found everything to be very cold, the tacos tasted like salt, the crab legs were unclean and covered in hair, and the dipping butter tasted stale. The best thing would probably be the tea... and I doubt that was even homemade. read more

Great Atmosphere, good food, cold beer. This is my favorite place to enjoy a beer in the Virginia Beach area. The Back Deck, is just as the name suggests - a deck on the back of an upscale seafood market, literally on top of the water, and over looking the back bay. There is a good selections of draft and bottled beer, as well as a solid liquor selection, and a menu with appetizers, salads, and some sandwich/entree options. Fresh seafood is the way to go here! I think I would have been able to give this location a higher score if we had been able to sit where the bay was, but instead we sat on the side of the building facing Bubba's since we had a large group. The waiter informed us that coming with 2 people is much better because you can squeeze into a smaller spot on the back and enjoy the view. Even so, we were able to walk down the dock on the side and get a few pictures of the sunset! He was immediately there to help us put tables together, brought some extra chairs, and was very attentive throughout our meal and quick to bring out our orders, so apparently these other reviews got stuck with the crappy servers. Go, our guy! This was my first experience with Fish Taco's, something that the sound of always grossed me out in the past. I finally decided to give them a try, and I'm so glad they did. Although they were expensive ($10 for three taco's), I think it was worth it. A local let us know that Tuesdays (I think it was Tuesdays) are $2 tacos. If I were a local, I'd be here EVERY TUESDAY for those fish tacos. But I would drink somewhere else: The cocktail menu was very impressive, but the drinks weren't. They were definintely strong (I was buzzed after one Rum Runner, so nice job, Rum Runner!), but they just didn't taste that great. Fun place by the water! It's first come first serve for tables, and some folks just camp out for the evening. Fortunately we got a couple of seats on the dock ledge and enjoyed drinks and dinner. Definitely recommend the raw oysters, steamed clams and scallop sliders. Basic good bar food and a fun crowd. Also dog friendly so bring your leashed pooch! read more

I personally got a mango, strawberry Crush. Excuse me.. I got TWO! Lol. Me & my brother ordered the sliders, my mom had the seafood platter with snow crab legs, and my sister had the fish tacos. All were exceptional, no doubt; HOWEVER, the Sliders out did everything on the table by a long shot. It was just perfect! We, also, had the crab dip and was NOT disappointed! Would have ordered more food if she had EVER returned to our table. But she didn't. I actually had to get up and ask the other nice waitress for extra cocktail sauce. I explained my issue and second server (Kristen/Kristal?) was very kind and apologetic. However first server never returned to even say boo. Sad to say that they pool tips. First server doesn't deserve Anything. On food note, steamed shrimp was so slimy buttery that it was a trick trying to shell it. Wouldn't ever return despite the beautiful view. Went here this past Sunday. First time back in a long time. Me and my girlfriend were kinda craving tacos so we got the fish tacos which were very good. They had a lot of filling inside too so they were pretty big. The crab dip was good too but I think it would be better if they used lump crab meat instead. It seemed more like a spread. On sundays they also do a $7 Bloody Mary/mimosa pitcher deal. You can't beat that price for a whole pitcher of alcohol. read more

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Moseyed out to T.B.D. last Sunday for lunch with my favorite 10 year old (my mentee) for a sunny day atmosphere on a 80 degree February day. When we arrived, there were people coming out of the wood works. The good: the view of the Lynnhaven River is bar none and doesn't get much better in the area. The bad: Here the policy is "find a seat where ever, when you can". Being an out of the box thinker, I immediately took advantage of a two top table that was vacant by physically moving a trash can that was touching the table by the hostess station. Score. The waitress promptly wiped off the table and offered menus. The ugly: I ordered fish tacos that were some of the worst I have ever had in my entire life. I literally could have scooped some gravel from the parking lot, topped it with cabbage and sour cream and could have been better. The wind was blowing so hard that it was blowing napkins, plastic, etc every where. Where do you think that stuff ends up? The water! To top it off, not only did I get sprayed once but twice in the face by two different waitress with table cleaning solution. If you are looking for a happy hour with great views, this your place. The place seems to be a hit or miss. Read a lot of great reviews and the scenery is gorgeous, however, the service itself is iffy. We ordered chicken tacos and queso dip with chips then waited 20 minutes and placed an order for a BBQ pizza. The BBQ pizza came out first.... and the chicken tacos took an additional 30 minutes because they were still being "cooked" yet came out cold. Service staff seems friendly but made a lot of excuses for why the food came out cold after almost an hour: Said they would remake the order but didn't want to take the chance of waiting another 30-45 minutes. We arrived around 5:45 on a Tuesday and expected a big wait; however we were excited that a table next to the water opened up right away. It is seat yourself. Our waitress Cait was awesome- she recommended the $4.50 "crushes" in orange and cherry limeaid. I went with the latter and it was my favorite. My friend ordered the grapefruit (quite tart) but still enjoyed it. We started with both the seaside and bayside oysters. I preferred the seaside because they were saltier, bayside oysters were larger and more buttery. We then moved on to tacos! I ordered 3 fish tacos. For the price there is truly not a better deal- these babies were fully loaded with great cabbage, mango salsa, and a nice creamy taco sauce! With all these 4 and 5 star reviews I really assumed The Back Deck would be better. Some of our hot appetizers and meals were colder than some of the drinks... The crab dip appetizer was good but the pita rounds we got were not enough to finish the $15 crab dip. We were forced to order more since there was so much dip left compared to the rounds, and we were charged extra for more. Most of the main meals were good but again, not as hot as they should've been. The clams were salty and did not have the broth we are used to, to dip them in. There isn't a chef, a hostess, a matrade, or anything pretentious. The freshest seafood from the seafood market inside. Nothing but the simplest preparations enhancing the immediate catch from the local area. Be prepared for wow on the fresh ingredients, not the paper plates and plastic forks. It's the back deck so glass pints nor metal forks are an option. Solid staff slinging drinks with a personality as friendly as you give. Bad moods need to look to the view before you order, everyone has a great time at the back deck. The back deck is the back porch of what we wish we had if you love salt air, waterview, and the closest connection of salt life without ownership the area provides. Coming from Ocean City, Maryland it's as good as it gets for what there has to offer bayside minus the crazy busy tourist town that place becomes. I really enjoy the atmosphere here and you can't beat the view. My friends and I loved that it was right on the water. I had a spicy margarita and it was one of the best spicy margaritas that I've ever had. I was very pleased with my drink and got a few. I had ordered one from my server and no kidding it took 25 minutes to get it to me. I know it was busy, but what irritated me was that another person at my table ordered a spicy margarita and hers was delivered in 5 minutes so I was confused as to why mine took 25 minutes when I had ordered it before the other person at my table. The food though was so so. It was good, but nothing really blew my mind. We got the mango salsa for the table and it should have just been regular salsa. It was all tomatoes and barely any mango. I ordered shrimp tacos and was given fish tacos. I told the food runner that I had ordered fish tacos and he was very nice and made sure that I got what I ordered. The service at the bar was great and the service at our table was ok. Our server was a tad rude when I asked for another margarita - I got a "Sure" with a little bit of an attitude and an eye roll.
