You know I love a good hidden gem…read more Old Germantown is just that. We were in the general area-ish doing some shopping and wanted to get some pizza for takeout some place closeby to enjoy at home while watching the Olympics (because it's in Italy--so pizza seemed like just the thing). A search on Yelp brought up this place as somewhat closeby. It was after dark when we went in search of it. We drove down a rural road past what appeared to be a driveway that led to a farm. This can't be it. We tried again. Navigation brought us to the same driveway. My husband was ready to give up. I decided to call the business. A kindly gentleman answered and said--yep! It will look like you're driving to a farm but we're here! As we got closer to the end of the drive we saw a bustling parking area. While it might be hard to find--the people have found it. And, so did we. We entered to find beer hall vibes with tons of communal seating. We asked if we could order to go which they were more than willing to accommodate. We found a couple bar stools at their bar, ordered our salads and pizza, and then enjoyed a couple of stout beers while we waited. The beers, salad, and the pizza straight from their wood fired pizza oven were all fantastic. We got one of their specialty pizzas which was a white pie that comes with ricotta (as well as mozz) mushrooms, and basil on a crust that has just the right amount of chewiness and char. Lovely! The folks working here were above-and-beyond friendly. And, one told us that they have a large outdoor patio during pleasant months. We will definitely be back during the pleasant months. And, let's be real--during the less than pleasant months as well. Get to it!

Upon driving in there is a building for the restaurant along with nice outdoor seating, and area for kids to play! We went in mid May on a sunny but cool evening. The kids loved having the sand area and toys to play with while waiting for dinner to arrive. They have a good menu, but there seemed to be a decent amount of items unavailable especially the sausages my friends wanted to try. We ended up with the spring pizza, sassy pig, a plain cheese, and then a three combo of sausages. I thought the pizza was all good, not the best I've ever had but solid. The spring pizza was my favorite. The sassy pig was very unique but good! Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the sausages but others in my group liked them. We upgraded that to include fries and there was only a very small amount. We will definitely be back, seems like a great spot for groups!

We decided at the last minute to go out for dinner on a Saturday night, which as you can imagine…read morecan be tricky. We tried a couple of other places, but they had very long waits, including Relish. We couldn't get in, but we saw a couple of people go next door to Von Rothenburg, so we decided to tag along, hoping that there might be something there. So glad that we did. Both Relish and Von Rothenburg are owned by the Angel's Share Hospitality Group. It's a German-style pub with very distinctive German-style architecture. When you walk in, there is a large bar. Most of the bar stools were filled. There is a dining room adjacent to the bar and another one upstairs. Most of the tables have plain wooden tops, a good fit for the pub atmosphere. The walls are stucco and trimmed in oak. The place has a relaxed feel to it. We took an open table, and in several minutes our bartender/server greeted us, gave us menus, and took our drink orders. We got a couple of small glasses. They had my favorite, Stiegl Grapefruit Radler. The food menu is not especially German and has a wide variety of items, ranging from burgers, pasta, seafood, and fish frys (referred to as Relish Cod/Perch Fry, which is a nod to the Relish restaurant next door). They had several specials, including a Herb-Crusted Rack of Lamb, and being a fan of lamb, I had to order that. We also got a Clubhouse Burger, ordered medium rare. It took a bit for the food, and our server kept us updated (and apologized) on the progress. To me, it didn't seem that long of a wait, but I appreciated the earnestness of our server, which was demonstrated the entire evening (thanks, Tanner). While I was waiting I had my side salad. It was good, with the surprise of some avocado. When it arrived, both meals were hot, well presented, and good portions. The lamb was served a perfect medium rare. The flavors from the herbs were outstanding. Lots of rosemary, and the au jus was rich and flavorful. The accompanying Sweet Potato Gratin was just okay. Not sure if the potatoes were cooked enough for my liking. The pile of potatoes had a Gruyère-like cheese that I didn't feel was a good complement. The burger was very good, in spite of being overcooked to medium well. The side of fries was hot and very tasty. Overall, a good meal and a place that we would likely return to. They have a huge patio in the rear, and I'm sure it's a lively beer garden during nice weather.

The restaurant is a cute reproduction of a German Gasrhof. They have many German options on the extensive menu. They also have a nice beer garden weather permitting where you can also order food. They often have live music on weekends.

We had 3 different people come to our table to see how things were going which was really nice. The owner even stayed a while to talk about the business and his other restaurants in the area. This restaurant sits in the Mequon Public Market and legitimately has better fried fish (and chips) than St. Paul Fish Market just across the parking lot, as crazy as that sounds. The batter is light but crispy, and there's a generous cut of fish under the relatively "fluffy" exterior and the fries were fresh and awesome. They also have a respectable beer selection, plus some good cocktails on offer. We were acknowledged and never ignored by staff even though there's an option to order everything through a QR code on the table. The manager stopped by a few times to check on us before it got overly busy, which was also nice. I'm excited to come back here and enjoy the patio when it warms up.

The fried calamari was overcooked and chewy. The crab cakes were inedible. We moved on to the main course. My daughter ordered fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. I ordered a margarita pizza. The fettuccine was inedible but the chicken was good. The pizza arrived burned on one side. It seemed that they were more concerned with the "influencers " as they received almost everything on the menu in perfect condition and in a timely manner! At times, there would be 3+ people helping with food delivery. We ended up ordering dessert. It was very good. Our w hour experience with slow service and poor quality of food would make it hard for us to consider returning. The restaurant did refund the crab cakes and we believe management knew they blew it. But it is awful how they treat their serving staff! Beware!
