Always friendly staff, great food, extremely reasonable beer/drink prices, and simply a fun place to hang out.

The service was horrible. The food was drenched in grease. The interior was tacky. I won't be back.

Authentic local gem!!!…read more Let's be fair... One must rate Hartland's Phoenix against the back drop of what it is... An local bar and restaurant the likes of which are no longer in vogue for most people whom have forgotten the authenticity of a multi generational family run eatery. Nancy ( a spritely 85?) the owner, is heart and soul not this landmark and her soul runs deep through every nook and cranny of the place, every home cooked dish, and every relationship she cultivates with her patrons. First things first... To kitchen puts out one of the best fish fry I've had any where in Wisconsin... Hands down best perch and baked walleye. The fry comes with soup and salad bar... The whole experience is less like eating out and more like going to Nancy and family's house for dinner... Home, real, no flourish just an authentic Wisconsin pleasure. They have daily specials all week long... Call, no web site because Nancy not much of a web developer ;) Secondly, the bar is a BARgin! Say no more! Drinks for a party of 4 adults and 3 kids....under $20! Seriously! I can not recommend The Phoenix any more... Go in expecting the above and you'll fall in love... If your disappointed... Well that's merely a difference between reality and expectation. Did I Mention the Burgers?! Holy !!!!! Killer burgers ... Just go, you'll thank me ;)

We had high hopes going here. Bar was good , tables were good, them came the food. Both the cod…read moreand perch were oily. I think the cook needs some help to master the experience of cooking fish.

First time here. We were super hungry, and this place happened to be on our way. There were only a…read morefew people at the bar when we arrived. Food: We ordered the Gyro Wrap, Bacon Cheeseburger, and a side of Sweet Potato Fries. The cheeseburger was very good, although the bacon was a bit dry and overcooked. The sweet potato fries were also good, arriving hot and flavorful. The Gyro Wrap was a bit disappointing. The meat looked like thin slices that had been thawed out and overcooked. On the positive side, the prices were very reasonable. Service: The bartender was very friendly, greeting us as we entered and getting us settled at the bar. She was also the cook and was doing her best to keep drinks filled while preparing food orders. The place became busier after we arrived, and one of the regulars actually jumped behind the bar to act as "Johnny-on-the-spot." How's that for customer loyalty? Apparently, everyone there comes to drink. I ordered a tonic with lime, and the bartender must have heard "tonic" and assumed I wanted a gin and tonic. This happened twice in a row. It was more amusing than upsetting. Atmosphere: The place is a typical small lake bar and grill. The décor is rustic and unpretentious. Regulars are greeted by their first names, and strangers seem to have no hesitation about getting to know their barmates. There is a nice view of the lake just across the road. Unfortunately, when you're sitting at the bar, that view is behind you. I'd like to stop back and try the Prime Rib Sandwich, which came highly recommended by the bartender.

I'd known of EJ's for a while, but hadn't gone because they're tucked away off the route I usually…read morego. It wasn't until recently when they started to actively promote themselves on social media that I thought of them before others as a place to try. I called in an order of fried haddock with potato pancakes and mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. I also ordered an extra piece of haddock. The food was ok. The the mozzarella sticks looked homemade but the potato pancakes did not. It weirded me out that the haddock was in little pieces instead of traditional sized pieces. The breading didn't have much flavor, which was a shame given how much fish there was. When I asked for the extra piece of fish, I was told by the person that answered the phone that they didn't know the cost as they were just helping out that night. I (unfortunately) didn't press for an answer because extra pieces at other restaurants are typically close to $3 and I was ok with something in that ballpark. To my utter shock, the bill showed the extra piece (or pieces) was an outrageous $9. Never in my wildest dreams would I pay $9 for an extra piece of fish, especially when the haddock dinner itself was only $11. I should have refused the extra piece when I found out or just left without any of the food, but sadly I didn't. It also would have been nice had they waited to make the extra piece(s) until I got there and could inform me that it was $9. I absolutely would have said no thanks at that point. Note, EJ's is cash only. They do have an ATM, but I don't know what the fees are for using it.
