Good Friday fish fry. Staff is friendly. Decent drinks. The German potato salad is OUTSTANDING.

I decided to try calling in an order after my previous attempt and stopping and ordering to-go didn't go so well. My order consisted of a three piece cod with two extra pieces and cheesey potato bites for the side. When I called in I told them what I wanted I was asked when I wanted to pick it up. I said I was only a few minutes away, so as soon as possible would be nice. I then heard the person taking my order yell back to the kitchen and ask how long it would take. He relayed that it would be half an hour. If that's the case, fine, but maybe lead with it before the customer places their order so they don't go through the whole charade of ordering first if a longer than anticipated wait doesn't work for them. When my food was brought out of the kitchen, clearly whoever wrote up the bill in the kitchen either somehow didn't know what I ordered or didn't know what it was supposed to cost cause the bartender said it would be $25. After explaining that was too much based on what I ordered, I painfully had to watch them try and do math in their head to determine the correct price. In the end, I think I was actually changed less than I was supposed to because the price of an extra piece of fish is $2.75 each and they only changed me $2 each. When I called, I asked for potato pancakes because that was listed as an option on an old menu picture I found. I was then told they didn't have them. When I asked if that meant forever or just that night, they clarified that they meant just that night. Maybe say that then instead of being vague. Instead of potato pancakes, I got the cheesey potato bites. As you can see in the picture I provided, I thought the amount was a little skimpy. They tasted good, but given that they had a store bought quality to them, it's not Belly Up that deserves the credit for how they taste. The fish, however, Belly Up gets credit for. I can see why and extra piece costs almost $3 each. These pieces were HUGE. If I had known just how big they were, I might have gotten just one extra piece at most, but even still probably would have been fine with a three peice. I liked the flavor of the breading and, in the end, the fish was worth all the hassle. read more

Local. Townie Bar. Fish Fry This place isn't very big, but you have to appreciate feeling like part of the family when you come here. As for the food, we both got the three piece Beer-Battered Cod Dinner and thought it was very average. Nothing stood out, tarter sauce was bland and I was missing my rye bread. Fries and beer were good though! The service was great our first time, which is what brought us back, but definitely lacked on our second visit. I like the townie feel of the bar, so we will probably come back, but I won't expect a lot from the food. read more

Belly Up is a local bar that serves a CASH ONLY fish fry on Fridays. It has 8 tables and a large center bar. The rumors are that it gets really busy on Friday nights. We got there at 4:30pm and it was not busy then. :) We sat down and the waitress/bartender took our drink order right away. I had my WOFS (whiskey old fashioned sweet) and my husband had a Pabst from the tap. I was pleasantly surprised to get a hand muddled OF. It was delicious and strong. I ordered the beer battered cod with potato pancakes and my husband ordered the fried shrimp and German potato salad. Food came out really quickly. My cod was ok. It is the type of beer battered fish where the batter doesn't stick to the fish so when you cut into it, the fish separates and leaves the empty batter shell behind. It tasted good, although slightly greasy. When I give something a "C" it is because I think it's average. Not great, not bad - just ok. This fish fry gets a strong C. Potato pancakes were also just "ok" too. They were very similar to breakfast pancakes, heavy on the batter and light on the potato. They could've been crispier. My husband really liked his shrimp and the "famous" German potato salad. All in all, it was a unique experience. I love visiting little local places. Service was great, drink prices were great and food wasn't bad. It's definitely worth a try. read more

I've eaten lots of fish fries, a lot; I just can't comprehend the negative reviews. The batter on the beer-batter cod was tempura light. The fish exceptionally moist and flavorful. Have there ever been "off" nights...yeah, but only a handle over the years and it was still better than the fish at the "popular" spots. The warm German potato salad is a good as my grandma's, just slightly less tart (for greater general appeal I imagine). Service is always fast. The only negatives are: 1) The cash only policy (which I understand), and 2) Trendy drinks tend to be just ok, although the tried and true standards are always spot on. Atmosphere: A typical neighborhood bar, although cleaner than most. Typical age range...on Fridays anyway...is 50's-70's. read more

P-cakes were crisp edges brown on sides creamy taters w/onion. German p-salad homemade was a taste sensation. Bacon & eggs & onion & taters & just the right amount of sugar & vinegar. Walked into this place, the wife ordered drinks and asked to start a tab and you would've thought she called the bartender a BITCH, because she told us both, rather sarcastically, we're a cash bar ONLY! Every time I've driven through this little subdivision in Menomonee Falls, I couldn't help but smile that there's a bar in the middle of it and it's always busy. I had been craving a good ole honest to goodness fish fry for quite sometime and rumor has it that Belly Up's was pretty good. We got nailed with snow the night we had planned on going, but ventured out anyway and I couldn't be more happy that we did. Honestly, the best fish fry I've had in years. The place is small, seats filled up pretty quickly from 6:30 on. Our waitress was awesome, our beer was $2.25 and served in a chilled mug and they had everything from PBR to New Glarus on tap. I had the regular ole fish fry, with potato pancakes and I believe it was $8.50. The pieces of fish were huge and cooked perfectly, the potato pancakes were almost as good as my grandma's and the two of them each were just about the size of a salad plate each. All in all this fish fry is more than worth the trip to the Falls. During lent I believe they also serve it on Wednesdays as well, but you may want to call ahead to make sure. Just moved back to Meno Falls, looking for a fish fry. This place had good reviews so thought I would give it a try. Bar was full, tables were full. Must mean good fish! Got fish fry to go. Now, I want to make clear that if any To-Go fish fry is good when you get it home, then it HAS TO BE AMAZING when fresh out of the kitchen. In saying that, I would recommend having a cocktail and eating the fish there, but its still a good take out choice! read more

I heard there were new owners at Belly Up so I decided to try the new fish fry. It was by far the worst I have ever had. Fish had the worst fishy smell, I took one bit and couldn't even eat the rest. The tartar sauce was awful it was just mayonnaise no pickle relish or anything. The old owners left big shoes to fill, hopefully the food improves with time. The bartender was very nice, we would stop back to see her but not for food. read more

We just moved to the area and were looking for our close to home watering hole. On our second visit we stopped for a soda to bring outside (to be a paying customer) and a large cup of water for our 3 dogs with us. The bartender made us buy 3 bottles of water. I love this place! It's a nice hide-a-way. The first compliment I must give this place is all the staff is friendly. The drinks are reasonably priced and they offer food. I have only tried the onion rings because I was not very hungry at the time, but I was looking at other patrons plates and the burgers look awesome. I was also told that their fish fry is better than my favorite place MJ Stevens which is my all time favorite. However, I told them I would be back and give the fish and the food a try. If you are looking for a nice clean and inviting place to drink then give this place a try. I would be a bar fly at this place more often ;) read more

Wow! The fish fry is absolutely awesome! The cod wasn't rubbery or soggy (no tell tale pool of fryer oil on the plate), but instead was crispy outside and flaky inside. Perfect. I can't rave enough about the German potato salad! Seriously the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is great and service was very personal and extremely friendly. We will absolutely be back! Oh, and one of the staff bought my 11 year old son a KitKat for dessert. It was a really sweet gesture. read more

Service was good but when i bit into my burger there was wax paper still stuck to the bottom of it...then i ordered a tap beer and got the wrong one! The beer wasn't a big deal but the wax paper...really? On top of that some of the locals that go there were very rude and asked me and my fiancé to move during the middle of our dinner so that they could play there game at the bar! First time there and will be our last time! Our service was extremely slow, maybe it was just us. Others who came in after us got their food and left while we were still waiting for our food. Got there around 5:50pm on a Friday few tables opened and not as busy as I thought it would be. The bartender was quick to come take our drink order and so I thought the place might live up to the hyped reviews. After we put in our order everything went downhill. We sat at our table for an hour and not once did the server come to our table, did not check on us once, no water refill nor brought us our food. An older man who worked there, could be the owner, came up to us and asked if we gotten our food. I said "NO" and we've been waiting for an hour since we ordered...he got upset and rushed to the back to see what happened. Then the Server walks up to us and had the nerves to ask if we'd ordered yet. SERIOUSLY! How can you take an order and then forget about the customers. I felt we were ignored the entire time. People who came after us ate and left before we did. We were extremely patient this evening, hungry for Fish Fry and waited. Food finally arrives to our table 1hr later after taking our order. I was expecting Menomonee Fall's best fish fry but it wasn't. I would rate our dishes avg. The beer-battered cod was good and cooked well . My perch was over fried the breading was too crisped and broken resulted dry fish fry on smaller thin side of perch. Disappointing! Potato pancakes was bland. Scallops and fries were ok. They did not charge me for my beer which was nice of them. We still ended up giving our server an extremely nice tip but it would be our last time at Belly Up. read more

What a fun little place! We were great like family when we arrived. Food was very good. The baked cod was a bit dry and the potato pancakes could have used a bit more time on the second side. But tasty nonetheless. For as busy as it was, we were surprised at how it wasn't defining. We'll be back! read more
