    Beer-Battered Cod Dinner (3 Piece)
    Eric M.

Local. Townie Bar. Fish Fry This place isn't very big, but you have to appreciate feeling like part of the family when you come here. As for the food, we both got the three piece Beer-Battered Cod Dinner and thought it was very average. Nothing stood out, tarter sauce was bland and I was missing my rye bread. Fries and beer were good though! The service was great our first time, which is what brought us back, but definitely lacked on our second visit. I like the townie feel of the bar, so we will probably come back, but I won't expect a lot from the food.

$11 for 3 piece breaded or beer battered Cod Beer Breaded Cod : C Potato Pancakes : C- Old Fashioned : A Tartar Sauce : sweet and pickley Final Grade : C+ I've been hearing about Belly Up for years and I FINALLY made it there this week. Belly Up is a local bar that serves a CASH ONLY fish fry on Fridays. It has 8 tables and a large center bar. The rumors are that it gets really busy on Friday nights. We got there at 4:30pm and it was not busy then. :) We sat down and the waitress/bartender took our drink order right away. I had my WOFS (whiskey old fashioned sweet) and my husband had a Pabst from the tap. I was pleasantly surprised to get a hand muddled OF. It was delicious and strong. I ordered the beer battered cod with potato pancakes and my husband ordered the fried shrimp and German potato salad. Food came out really quickly. My cod was ok. It is the type of beer battered fish where the batter doesn't stick to the fish so when you cut into it, the fish separates and leaves the empty batter shell behind. It tasted good, although slightly greasy. When I give something a "C" it is because I think it's average. Not great, not bad - just ok. This fish fry gets a strong C. Potato pancakes were also just "ok" too. They were very similar to breakfast pancakes, heavy on the batter and light on the potato. They could've been crispier. My husband really liked his shrimp and the "famous" German potato salad. All in all, it was a unique experience. I love visiting little local places. Service was great, drink prices were great and food wasn't bad. It's definitely worth a try.

Great fish fry, clean and fun people. I will definitely be back. Perch was the best of the fry choices but all were tasty.

On one of our visits the guy behind the bar was so loud and basically stood back there and drank lite the whole time. Then a local (I'm assuming) said something to the bartender and he shouted back "F**k you old man"! I asked someone at the bar does the owner know that his employee uses that kind of language? Much to my surprise he told me that the bartender is the owner! Are you kidding me? If you are visiting from out of town or new to town there are a lot better places to go that they don't use that kind of language. Not that I'm a prude or anything because I've used that language...I guess it's more shocking to hear it when you have people in your bar you've never seen. I was going to give it one star but decided I'd give it two because we just moved here and some friends of mine were in town and I thought I'd give them a second chance. We were met by a very nice bartender named Cassie. She was attentive and probably knew as an EMPLOYEE not to talk that way. Anytime someone came in she greeted them. The kicker here? The "owner" was sitting on the other side of the bar playing dice and still using that language and of course drinking miller lite. We'll go when she is working and/or their daytime bartender Ray. He knows a lot about sports and had a great conversation with my husband.

When we first arrived, the restaurant was not busy. Only a couple other tables occupied, so expectations were fairly high for a smooth experience. Unfortunately, things quickly went downhill. The food took quite a while to come out despite how slow it was. When it finally did, it was first delivered to the wrong table before eventually making its way to us. The food runner then randomly grabbed a ranch from our table and brought it to another table. He seemed potentially new, but overall the service felt very disorganized and clueless, especially considering the restaurant wasn't busy. We ordered the cheese curds to start, and they were disappointing. The breading was mushy and extremely greasy, and the cheese itself tasted low quality rather than the fresh curds you'd expect at a Wisconsin pub. We also ordered several wing flavors since they were on special: garlic parm, buffalo, bourbon BBQ, and lemon pepper. One issue right away was the lack of flavor variety overall on the menu. The wings themselves were inconsistent. Sizes varied dramatically, which clearly affected the cook quality. Some were fried so hard they were like chewing leather, while others had soggy, undercooked skin. Flavor wise the buffalo were almost completely flavorless. The lemon pepper was extremely mild. The garlic parm was probably the best of the group, though still just average. The bourbon BBQ was rough. The sauce tasted like an overly sweet, overly salty cheap jarred glaze rather than an actual house-made BBQ sauce. My wife ordered the Mary Mac burger without a bun and was told extra lettuce leaves could be substituted to make it a lettuce wrap. Instead, it came out with just shredded lettuce. The burger itself was overcooked and lacking flavor. The fries were decent enough, but nothing memorable. Overall, this felt like a place with potential that just missed the mark on both execution and consistency during our visit.

On a weeknight (WED) the girls gathered for happy hour and everyone enjoyed the $2 burger special. Drinks were perfect; it is always a bonus to find a bar that stocks VSQ Coronet Brandy! My Mr. Plus 1 tried the seafood combo (scallops, shrimp and fish) and I went with perch. Both were above average for a bar fish fry . The breading is delicate and delicious. Becky, the owner, makes her own german potato salad and homemade potato pancakes...that sealed the deal for Plus 1. Place was hopping, every seat at bar taken with people waiting for tables or enjoying a cocktail afterwards the entire time we were there. Overlook the lack of decor and give it a try. We waited by the bar which was filled with people enjoying themselves and the atmosphere. After 15 or so minutes we were texted that our table was ready. We sat at a booth and were greeted by our very energetic server. He said he'd be taking care of us and asked if we needed time to decide what to eat. Since we looked at the menu while waiting we were ready. My wife ordered the chicken princess with a side salad. I ordered the prospector burger cooked medium. We also put in our drink order. By the time the drinks were put on our table my wife's salad was given to her as well. He also gave us a loaf of bread to go with her entree. My wife enjoyed her salad and the bread was nice and warm with a nice exterior but the inside was pillowy and delicious. The cinnamon butter was a perfect accompaniment. Not much later our meals came out. My wife's chicken was smothered in a cheese sauce and topped with red peppers and asparagus. She also got a good amount of rice to go with it. She has raved to anyone who will listen how good this dish is. She's recommended it to no less than 10 people already and is still talking about it. My burger was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of barbecue sauce on it. The bacon was cooked well on it as well. We will for sure be back to visit this very popular restaurant. This being a restaurant- I weight the food heaving in the rating as that is why you go to a restaurant. Where do I begin?! I ordered the Lord something or other - where you get brisket, chicken, and ribs. The brisket was absolutely awful. Gray, sliced thin, flavorless, very tough. Severely overcooked with zero fat content, dry as a bone. More like rawhide. Drenched in sauce - and if you have to ad sauce to try to make brisket edible - it's no good. Just bad. The ribs- oddly - had a bark like outer covering but I can't speak to flavor because they were drenched in sauce. I sincerely cannot understand how anyone could think this is barbecue. The chicken- over cooked, tough, and again, drenched in sauce. Asparagus- overcooked and slimy - even though it was supposed to be grilled. It wasn't. For the price of the meal, the quality was extremely low. One of my worst meals this year. If I was a chef - I'd be embarrassed this left my kitchen. Lastly, ordered a prickly pear cocktail. Tasted like watermelon. I've had prickly pear juice and drinks before- this had no discernible flavor that resembled prickly pear. All in all- I cannot recommend this restaurant at all. Please- go somewhere else. Anywhere. This food was just flat out bad and very poor quality.

I called in an order of fried haddock with potato pancakes and mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. I also ordered an extra piece of haddock. The food was ok. The the mozzarella sticks looked homemade but the potato pancakes did not. It weirded me out that the haddock was in little pieces instead of traditional sized pieces. The breading didn't have much flavor, which was a shame given how much fish there was. When I asked for the extra piece of fish, I was told by the person that answered the phone that they didn't know the cost as they were just helping out that night. I (unfortunately) didn't press for an answer because extra pieces at other restaurants are typically close to $3 and I was ok with something in that ballpark. To my utter shock, the bill showed the extra piece (or pieces) was an outrageous $9. Never in my wildest dreams would I pay $9 for an extra piece of fish, especially when the haddock dinner itself was only $11. I should have refused the extra piece when I found out or just left without any of the food, but sadly I didn't. It also would have been nice had they waited to make the extra piece(s) until I got there and could inform me that it was $9. I absolutely would have said no thanks at that point. I don't know what was on the burger, it was not Swiss, I'm not sure it was cheese. The mushrooms were canned. This is fine, as long as you heat them up on the grill, these were not heated.
