As I sit here Saturday eating my leftover fish from last night, I thought I had to review this place. My fish is ice cold from the fridge and still crunchy & delicious. We had to wait 30 minutes for a table last night, but the fish fry was worth it. We got both baked and fried cod. Everything was hot and delicious! Salad bar was nothing to write home about, but I like that you can have your bread or Cole slaw if you want or skip it. There was also clam chowder at the salad bar. I skipped that and just had a small salad, delicious fish & fries. My husband got the waffle fries and they were great, too. Have to give kudos to the host who was very friendly and the waiter as well. We'll be back!! read more

45 minute wait which isn't a problem for a Friday night fish fry during the prime seating time The problem is the slow service from start to finish once seated A room with 6-8 tables and only server but several people helping to buss tables and to keep the salad bar clean Once we ordered our meals it took almost 20-30 for all 3 Meals to show up since we were seated almost at the end of the dinner rush. Best dang Wisconsin Fish Fry that you might ever have! Karl is the chef in the kitchen and has been the driving force behind this tavern for decades. He is a bit older, has a tobacco stained beard and runs an establishment that is part Wisconsin Tavern, part dining room and part game room. We used to frequent this joint when it was called the "In Between" in the 1980s and later "Karl's Place" in the 1990s and today "the Phoenix". Karl is a master chef, but bear in mind, you will wait for your food. Even if you are coming in for lunch on a Tuesday and order a hamburger you might wait a good 40 minutes before your food arrives. You'll get the typical fixings with your Wisconsin Fish Fry here: 4+ different kinds of potato dishes (German potato salad, egg-potato salad, french fries, etc.). They offer a full salad bar with that curious dessert-ish marshmallow-cream-jello goodness thing. I most recently fully enjoyed the fried perch which I enjoyed the most and shared my parents other fish choices: baked fish and fried pike. Went to the Phoenix last Friday evening 12/13/24 for a cocktail and to shoot pool. When asked the bartender what flavored vodka they have she said we all flavors so I asked for what Peach vokda with sprite and a splash of grendadine, she said sorry we don't have. I got someting else and went about my business. Later in the evening my husband ordered 3 shots which he had to explain what was in them and how to pour them. After shots were poured and taken and paid for the bartender Courtney proceeded to wipe her hand over the bar and said "not even a dime" my husband proceeded to explain to her that he tips at end of night before he leaves an establishment. Courtney didn't like that and they exchanged words. We then went to get our jackets to leave and they were gone. Someone took the jackets to the bar, and then proceeded to argue with us as towhy the jackets were left unattened. We were in a panic as our keys for the vechicle and home were in the pockets. The women who took the jackets asked why we had an attitude and proceeded to use fowel language with me. We will not be back which is unfortunate as it is suppsoed to be a negbiborhood bar that is not very negbiborhood freindly unless your a regular. read more

An local bar and restaurant the likes of which are no longer in vogue for most people whom have forgotten the authenticity of a multi generational family run eatery. Nancy ( a spritely 85?) the owner, is heart and soul not this landmark and her soul runs deep through every nook and cranny of the place, every home cooked dish, and every relationship she cultivates with her patrons. First things first... To kitchen puts out one of the best fish fry I've had any where in Wisconsin... Hands down best perch and baked walleye. The fry comes with soup and salad bar... The whole experience is less like eating out and more like going to Nancy and family's house for dinner... Home, real, no flourish just an authentic Wisconsin pleasure. They have daily specials all week long... Call, no web site because Nancy not much of a web developer ;) Secondly, the bar is a BARgin! Say no more! First time for a Friday Fish Fry. A very bare bones salad bar. NE Clam Chowder was good. Server was very slow and the food was (although hard to believe) even slower. When I finally tracked down my server, and asked how much longer (approximately 30 minutes after I was seated) I was told it would be another 10 minutes. Talk a' bout wings! The chicken wings at The Phoenix, Hartland on Thursdays are the biggest, most bodacious buffalo wings on the planet! I've never seen bigger chicken wings in my life. And the sauce is definitely the boss here. They come breaded or non-breaded however you like them best. I'm in favor of the breaded deep-fried wings with their crunchy coating. We ordered two 10-wing platters with Nashville Hot, Memphis Sweet, Bourbon and Siracha Honey sauces to share. The wing sauces are very heavy, sticky, and sweet. I preferred the Siracha Honey the best. But the Nashville Hot was just as awesome. The meal was so enjoyable, absolutely fun to eat and totally delicious. After you've finished eating the wing and cleaned off all the meat there is plenty of sauce left over to lick off your fingers. I'm telling you... these wings are serious BBQ. Be ready for a big helping of Mmmm-good! And don't worry, along with the wings comes a pile of napkins and wet naps. Trust me you'll need them. Also, our server was very personable and gracious. Went to the Phoenix tonight looking forward to fish fry all day with my father-in-law who ate there years ago. They call it an all-you-can-eat fish fry buffet.....funny!!!They were out of fish for most of the time we were eating.. Should've been suspicious when we drove through downtown hard when in every place was packed. Walked into the Phoenix and it was like a ghost town The tartar sauce tasted strange the tuna salad looked funky and most of the food was in short order. We were looking for a new fish fry place to try and came across The Phoenix. We placed the order which was ready in a mere 15 minutes! I ran downtown Hartland to pick it up and had to park about 3 blocks away due to the lack of parking around The Phoenix. No big deal as the extra calories burned does me good. Went in and talked to the hostess - she had my order all ready to go but she said had to pay the bartender. Three adult fish fry's and a child chicken tender meal - $46 and some change. So far my experience has been good - enter bartender Kelly. I hand her my ticket and my debit card - to which she replies "we don't take credit cards". Hmmm..ok. I said "oh its 2016 and you don't accept cards" - to which so kind of got an attitude and said once again "we don't take credit cards". She did point out they have an ATM machine on premise - not sure why when we placed the phone order that wasn't mentioned to us. Not wanting to pay the ATM fee's, I picked up my debit card and said I was going to run to my bank down the road (about 1/4 mile away) and get some cash. She said - again with attitude - "are you coming back?" I said that I'd try. As I turned to walk out she called me a dick in front of all the bar patrons. I drive to the bank, get cash and return to The Phoneix. I walk in and probably by surprise I returned, she went and got my ticket, I put down $60. She took it, made change and knowing I was going to do a Yelp reviewed took two pictures of Kelly. She asked what I was planning on doing with the pictures and I said it was going to make a good Yelp review. She then said if I posted her pictures online she was going to hunt me down. No financial tip for Kelly .. but a more important one coming from somebody who bartended for 7 yrs myself. Don't call your customers a Dick and say you're going to hunt them down - no matter how badly you want to. Lots of food for the money but the fish was OK - average at best. We probably would not have gone back a 2nd time before bartender Kelly so graciously spread her classiness all around. Saturday night. Prime Rib. Go there. Seriously. My family goes in herds... and we will be there again this weekend. I'm so excited, I had to look them up. Yes, you wait but it's darn worth it. Go comfortable. It's not a stuffy place at all. Stiff drinks that make downtown Milwaukee look ridiculous- and a quarter of the price. Pool, darts, Elvira pinball (sweet) and a Claw game. Small bar, small dining so call ahead if you have a group (I don't think you have to but we do to make sure they have enough prime rib for our giant family). Great salad bar, very fresh. I don't like shrimp but the salad bar shrimp are HUGE. Everyone says they like them. Get the sauteed mushies. OMG drool. read more

Had what was easily the most awkward lunch ever here last week. You can always tell when white people aren't used to dealing with black people on a regular basis and it was beyond evident to me as soon as I sat at the table in this "restaurant." First of all, I was greeted by a patron and directed to the restaurant section by him. He was the highlight of my visit. Pleasant. Some of his best friends are probably black. Pun intended. Either way, no staff in sight. When I entered the seating area, which had a sign that that section was closed (?????) and the server saw me, the look on her face told me all I needed to know about what my dining experience was going to be like. She seemed very reluctant to approach me, but she did so anyway. She came over and said, "Hi. Do you want a drink?" I replied, "No. Can I have a menu?" Everywhere I've ever been to that serves food brings you a menu by default. Not here, though. Not that day. Upon bringing the menu to me, I asked her what kind of soda they had and she gave me my choices, after which she proceeded to bring me one of the wateriest glasses of Pepsi I've ever had the displeasure of consuming. I had a certificate from Restaurant.com for $30 worth of food at half price. Nah. Nope. I'd already made up my mind I wasn't using it there and was gonna exchange it for another restaurant. So, eventually the server shows back up and takes my order. I ordered the Gyro sandwich. I didn't think I could stomach anything else. I was already queasy. The atmosphere just made me feel that way. Finally, my food shows up. It was ok. Definitely not up to par with Oakland Gyros on Milwaukee's east side, but I digress. She circled back after about 15 minutes to see if everything was ok to which I replied it was. Emphasis on "OK." Didn't see her again for the rest of my time there and I was there a good hour. Upon finishing my "meal," I had to go find her for my check. I got up, exited the dining room, and saw her behind the bar. It took her a full minute to acknowledge me and she just looked at me when she finally did. I asked for my check. Out the corner of my eye, I spotted a little girl sitting with her parents who proceeded to stare me down like she'd also never seen a black person in her life. *eye roll* I was presented with my check and paid it. Despite this being one of the shittiest dining experiences I've ever had, guess what? I still tipped the server. Yeah, there are black people who still do tip regardless of service quality. Shocker. I work in Hartland in a business where I am not just the only black person but I'm the only minority period. That said, I deal with being the only person of color most of my day 5 days/week, so I know what it looks like when white people know how to operate around black people and when they don't. Kind of an expert there. The server with the shoulder length, hombre blond/brown dye job (best description I can come up with) definitely needs to get her black people poker face all the way together. She failed miserably at putting it on Friday afternoon. Needless to say, I won't be back. I hope as an establishment, you guys do better going forward. read more

It's a dive bar and VERY Midwest. I guess now that I live so close to the heart of wine country and have developed a bit of Marin snobbery I am not a good judge, but I went with amazing company (best friend in high school - met up 15 years later like no time had passed). And they have decent wines (from CA, duh ;) ), a laid back and welcoming atmosphere, easy parking, lots of old-school bar games. Nice local spot. read more

My wife and I went for the Friday Fish Fry based on a local fish fry review site. The fish fry was OK, but the atmosphere... bizarre. I imagined I was eating at a table set up in my grandma's living room. My wife sat next to a vacuum. Check this out - all you can eat buffet with ALL the following on it: breaded cod, breaded mahi, breaded clam strips, breaded catfish, crabcakes, potato pancakes, fries, breaded butterflied shrimp, peel and eat shrimp plus salad bar.
