The atmosphere is what I think my great, great grandmothers house would look like if I had a Greek grandmother. It's not a bad thing. I have a neoclassic theme at my house. The waiter was efficient and we had falafel and it was a little over cooked but good. The vegetables were fresh and tasty. I ordered the chicken skillet that came with burnt toast, potatoes, chicken, onions, and peppers. There was plenty and I was able to make 2 meals out of one. FYI, it's never ok to serve burnt toast. Great, local staple for Mediterranean food in the Aurora area. The Athenian has been here for 25 years and I don't see it going anywhere. Have been here several times before, but this time was one of the best. Our server was so kind and nice, very attentive, and spaced our food and courses out so my friend and I could chat. The food comes out super fast as well. Saturdays in the early afternoon are the best times to go, there are only a few patrons so you're given all the attention. Ordered the trio dip with pita slices - outstanding. The Gyro is also a great meal as well. And had to try a piece of their Baklava -- perfectly made!The couple of shots of ouzo was also very nice and fit well with the Greek decor. Thanks for another great meal. read more

Just back from a greek island cruise and wanted to find a great greek restaurant nearby that had the feeling and tasted authentic to our recent overseas experience. The Athenian was definitely it. To start the ambience is wonderfully done with a lot of care in the decor. Enjoyed a glass of greek white wine which I highly recommend experiencing. And they played background greek music which set a fine mood. A family run business the menu for lunch was a good selection of greek specialties. The chef's platter gives you a marvelous sampler of greek items. As others note the quantities gave us a big togo box even after a masterful attempt at eating everything. And to top it off, the baklava was homemade and delicious! Only possible disappointment was the gyros meat and chicken pieces from the Souvlaki were dryer than expected. We'll be back for a dinner to see if that's consistent preparation. Definitely recommend a visit! read more

Easily my favorite restaurant in the Denver area. I always look forward to coming here, and I can't wait to come back soon after I leave. This was my first time to bring a daughter here, and we enjoyed everything we ate. The saganaki is a delicious treat and perfect for two people to split. We each ordered the Grecian platter for our entrees. Dolmades, gyro, spanakopita, and tiropita are all delicious. With five triangles of spanakopita and tiropita, it's maybe a bit too much filo dough for me, but it was all yummy and filling. My daughter got the hummus as well, which was fantastic. We tried the baklava for the first time. Unlike the saganaki, it wasn't easy to split and ended up being kind of messy. Tasted good though! Service is really a highlight. You can tell it's a family-run restaurant, as many different people will greet and check in on you during the meal. And everything comes out fast too. As I've said before, it's more like eating dinner at a close family friend's house than it is being at a restaurant. Just can't say enough good things about the Athenian. Even though this is in my neighborhood, I have never tried this family-owned restaurant and am glad I did. We stopped in after attending a funeral service for a friend's father. Our waitress was kind and very understanding. She paced our meal out so we could debrief and enjoy our appetizer and drinks and put our entrees in later since meals are prepared quickly. She said, "I treat my customers how I would like to be treated." The trio dip was a good sampler with hummus, spicy feta, tzatziki, and plenty of pita. Lunch is served until 3:00pm. I chose the Chicken Kabob Salad which was very filling with tender chicken breast served over a Greek salad with homemade Greek dressing and more pita and dolmades on the side. I had some visiting friends come into town for lunch. So Athenian came to mind. I believe one of the nicest restaurants in Aurora not being a chain restaurant. I ordered my usual kitchen gyros sandwiche and lemon rice soup. I have to say though the gyros are filling and tasty I do love the soup. The service as always is pleasant and their Greek ambiance is always pleasant to see. I think I see something new each time as there are many hidden gems. Mind you this is the restaurant that cooked me a meal after closing because the closing times were incorrect online. Though I told them not to. They did anyway. Forever indebted. read more

Best Greek food! Ordered takeout tonight for the first time and so happy with The Athenian! The manager who was there when we picked up our order had such personality -- a trait strongly lacking further south, where we live. Gyros tasted exactly as they should. Hearty, generous portions and flavorful with just the right amount of tomatoes, red onions and white onions. The fresh tzatziki sauce was automatically provided on the side, which we appreciated. The chicken kabob sandwich was equally as excellent. The loukomades for dessert were delightful -- light and airy -- honey with a hint of cinnamon. Dinner was a dining pleasure. Our gyros were very good and there seemed to be a large quantity of meat and sides. I'd definitely go back for the great portion and taste! Came in recently on a Friday evening at around 6:30ish for dinner. The restaurant was only about half full so we had no problem being sat. Service was fast and friendly and the interior was cutely decorated with Grecian themes. I went with baked lemon chicken for my dinner and my friend the moussaka My dinner started with a soup or salad and I went with a cup of the Chicken Lemon Orzo. It was sooooo good and would be the perfect thing on a cold or rainy day (or just at any time). I would come back here to have an entire bowl of this soup. Unfortunately, this is where my praise has to stop. Everything else at the table ended up being a bit of a miss. The chicken wasn't what I was expecting. It came out as more a roasted half chicken - which would have been fine if it had actually tasted good. It was overcooked and dry and was a little bland for my liking (there was no notable citrus flavor). The accompanying greek potatoes were also dry, overcooked, and hard. Gotta say - I think this may be the first time I've left potatoes on my plate uneaten. The moussaka was fine...just fine. Overall, the Athenian was a mixed bag for me. I would definitely go back to the have the chicken lemon orzo but I don't know that I'd venture to try anything else on the larger menu. read more

There are three separate dining rooms and everything is great for private dining. One room is more upscale and the other is in the actual main dining room. Then they have a nice secluded outdoor patio space. Decor galore. There is no shortage of greek feel in the restuarant. Greek gods, statues, wine bottles and the overall atmosphere was warm, quiet and comfortable. I love a family owned business and this is the epitamy of loving what you do. The joy on the owners face when she delivered our food and saw our reaction was so wholesome. The lunch platters for two are HUGE. We had a ton of leftovers, which we ate for dinner that night. When the Athenian Platter was delivered to our table, we literally said oh my god and gasped. Like, this is a feast y'all. The Athenian Platter consists of lemon chicken, sausage, vegetables, potatoes, dolmades, feta cheese, olives, pita bread and tzatziki. Legit heaven! Plus, we got to choose soup or salad. We chose the avgolemono soup, which was a nice starter and tasty. The sausage stole the show, but the chicken was a close second. We ordered one of the chef feasts which contained multiple meats, grilled vegetables, pita bread, olives and grape leaves. The cushion size of the face is very large, but the Gyro meat was a bit dry but flavorful, as well as the Pork Souvlaki was a bit dry too. All the other items within the feast were very good, but I was disappointed because those were the main entrees. If you go here I would not recommend the sandwiches. Based off of the ambiance of the restaurant and friendliness off the family who greets you when you walk in, I'd give it another try. They definitely have good service, but I was absolutely not impressed with the selections we chose. The Chicken Kabob sandwich was huge chunks of dry, flavorless chicken, topped with huge chunks of red onion, I opted for no tomato, but added feta, and there was plenty of that. The pita was not toasted or anything, kinda had a stale taste to it. The oven roasted potatoes soaked the whole bottom of the sandwich, but they tasted alright. The actual gyro didn't lack meat, but had the same huge chunks of tomato and onion. Pita was the same & the tzatziki tastes like straight Greek yogurt, and has the same consistency. Their menu has much more to offer, so I'll try something else to be fair, but $35 definitely went in the garbage to tonight. read more
