In 1966, my future husband and his parents wished to introduce me to their favorite shrimp restaurant, The Argonne! Coming from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, I received word I must bring heels, a dress and white gloves! No problem, as those items already graced the suitcase. A beautiful sunny day we left Mullett Lake and drove and drove and drove to the Argonne Supper Club! After a gracious greeting, we began enjoying our meal! The servers and entire meal - bread, coleslaw, 2 types of shrimp, and dessert - far exceeded all my dreams for the evening! What a lovely Club! Now it is 2026! Due to a health problem, my husband and I created a bucket list of all the Michigan places we wished to revisit! Kind of like rereading your favorites again! Yesterday, we made 4 o'clock reservations, and entered The Argonne House with our daughter, wondering what changes we'd find! Structural changes, an updated menu - those were the only changes Katherine ( Kat), our server made us feel like part of the family, telling us about the 100 year party! How we wished we knew about it! Amazing - the tables still stood far part!!! Did we imagine the walls the lovely colors they are now? Our daughter was a planner for the Washington Post! I love the food from here, but unfortunately, every time we've carried out dinner over the past few years, there's been a problem. One year they didn't include a steak, one year the shrimp was fried instead of steamed, and this year the coleslaw and bread (two favorite parts of the shrimp dinner) were left out. I tried really hard to find something wrong, but everything was perfect. Usually when I order ribeye medium rare, it's either too raw, or over cooked, this was perfect. If you do not like loud restaurants, do not eat dinner here. The acoustics were terrible and we sat by a group of six or seven men who were so loud that it was almost impossible to enjoy your meal. We also sat at the table for 10 to 15 minutes before anyone even greeted us and after I asked one of the other waitresses if we had a server. The food was OK, but not for the price. The Argonne House looks like an old manor house. Inside it continues to feel that way. It's a merger of a large house and a restaurant and bar. It's done in a classy way, that feels welcoming and warm. I ordered the Fried Shrimp Platter($33), which has 16 pieces of shrimp. It was absolutely delicious. Honestly some of the best shrimp I've had. In all honesty I haven't had a ton of shrimp dinners so the comparison is limited. The batter was light and delicious. The yellow and red sauces are amazing, they should bottle that stuff. I got a baked potato and asparagus with it. Both were excellent, perfectly cooked. I also ordered a side Garden Salad ($6). It was a very good salad with a very nice French Dressing. The meal started with courtesy Bread and coleslaw. The bread was nice and fluffy and fresh, served with vinegar and butter. Definitely enjoyed. The coleslaw was very good, but I'm not a huge fan of coleslaw. The person I was with ordered the Black and Blue Burger ($18). Which has Michigan grass fed Beef, blackening seasoning, Moody Blue cheese crumbles, mixed mushrooms, arugula, crispy fried shallots, and House made Blue Cheese Dressing on a Tavern Bun. It was stated to be perfectly cooked and tasted excellent. It was served with french fries and they were enjoyed. The service was very good. Efficient and happy to help with your questions. So last night we dined at the Argonne House (famous shrimp reputation). Their shrimp dinners, priced by plate count, are simply fabulous. Whether deep fried in a delicate tempura style batter or steamed to tender perfection, Argonne never disappoints. Our server was quick with beverage requests & delivery was smooth and prompt. Dinner orders were taken and arrived within 15 minutes piping hot from the kitchen. We had reservations for 2.5 weeks so seating was immediate. Their atmosphere and decor remain hip with an 'Up North' look. Now for Wednesday evening you'd think it to be slow. Maybe we went in with expectations that were too high, or maybe it was because they were so busy - but we weren't fond of Argonne House. The atmosphere was definitely "country club" - the decor and people who were there lent it that feeling. Generally an older audience dressed in khakis and polos. Our waitstaff was OK, I think she was running all over trying to keep up with the everyone's needs. The food was just OK. My husband and I both ordered wood-fired pizzas. He got the steak-tip pizza. He thought it was good, but the steak tips were few and far between. So, meh. I had the Margarita pizza. I didn't like it. The sauce was really sweet, and it totally clashed with the salt that was spread on the crust. Too salty. My son had the bacon cheeseburger. Judging from the way he inhaled it, it was good. I don't think we'll return. I'd rather find a less expensive, smaller place that has a more casual vibe and food more to my liking. But that's just my opinion and my taste, I'm more a laid-back kinda gal. read more

This was my first time, although my family has been going here for years. They are known for their shrimp (both fried and broiled options) that they import from India. I highly recommend the fried shrimp. I also enjoyed the walleye and my wife enjoyed the whitefish. I think the highlight however was the muscles appetizer. This restaurant is off the beaten path from darling Charlevoix (not too far on the outskirts of town, though), and it has a loyal following of locals. Their isn't much ambiance with such large rooms and family-style chairs/tables. The food is reliably good however. I ordered their Caesar (added grilled shrimp, a generous portion). Loved the dressing and the shaved parmesan. I always appreciate when the Romaine isn't wet and the leaves are cut well into smaller pieces, as was the case here. DOWNRIGHT FANTASTIC!! This is a must visit restaurant! And you need reservations if you want to eat here on a weekend. We drove by on the way to a tasting at The Blue Dot winery, which is .5 miles away, also fabulous. We decided to go at 4pm when they opened to see if we could get a table without a reservation. We got there right at 4pm and so did about 25 other people. Luckily we were one of the first 2 to enter the doors when they opened. There were no tables left but since we were early, we were able to snag seats at the bar. The bar is U shaped and surrounds the counter where the food orders come up. The bartender, Liz was clearly a seasoned professional. She could "feel" when the food hit the counter. even with her back turned. The plates were just about to be set down and she was grabbing them to serve them. She was very attentive and had a bar full of people eating dinner as well as having drinks. We both ordered the 10 piece shrimp dinner that Laura at the Blue Dot winery recommended. We ordered half fried and half steamed with mashed potatoes and I ordered green beans and my husband opted for asparagus. We split an order of crab cakes as an appetizer. The crab cakes were phenomenal! Best crab cakes we have ever had, even in Maryland! Sorry, Maryland peeps! The shrimp were beyond amazing. The fried shrimp had to have been made by a French pastry who loves fried food. That's the only thing that makes sense. My husband doesn't even like any fried food and is a tough restaurant critic and he was totally gob smacked at their deliciousness, as was I! The shrimp was tender w a light, crispy batter. The steamed shrimp were so tender as well. Hands down the best shrimp we have ever had. They advertise as the best shrimp and they are not kidding! The coleslaw was so fresh and flavorful. Best coleslaw ever. The green beans and asparagus were bright green and fresh and cooked to perfection. Nothing I hate more than dark, limp, over cooked green beans. The mashed potatoes were light and fluffy and yummy as was the bread with the seasoned butter, This was one of the best meals we have ever had and we are well traveled. The restaurant was super clean, as were the restrooms. The staff is very efficient. It's one thing to cook good food and another to run a restaurant efficiently. To cook amazing food, serve it hot and with excellent service is another level. If you are ever in Charlevoix, this is the place to eat. If you don't like seafood there's other choices. We are leaving town tomorrow and we were sad to find out it's closed tomorrow because we were ready to come back again! read more

We love this place. They did such a public service job during Covid, and the public stayed with them and new folks found them. Reservations suggested! The bar/pizza area is super popular, as is outdoor eating. We love the mussels, and shrimp of course! Only downside is the inside can be loud, but all in all, locals and tourists alike love this place! Can be hard to get into if you haven't made resos, but try. read more

However one meal came out warm but on edge of cold and the other Shrimp meal was overcooked (shrimp shouldn't be tough) with a more salty risotto. Drinks were excellent. Told waitress about food when asked how it was and she didn't seem to acknowledge and or inquire about less than ideal food service. She jumped to asking if we wanted dessert. Woe behold any Charlevoix year rounder who wants to make a reservation...you won't get it...they cater to only the tourists/fudgies. They opened at 4 on Wednesday after being closed for the past three days and there was no room for a party of 4 whatsoever. She asked me why I didn't leave a request on their voice mail but the intro message states that they don't check their messages. She said "I'll have to change the verbiage". Does us a heck of a lot of good...I would have been able to dine there if I had been given the correct info. Well, when business is bad in the off season, I hope they remember that they don't give a rodents furry behind about local residents. This place is an experience. I hadn't been in over 20 years, but the new owners kept the supper club feeling. They still serve the house bread and family portion of cole slaw. A pianist came in at 6pm to play which added to the ambiance. Drinks were well made and had just the right kick. Our group had both the steamed and the deep fried shrimp. Thumbs up for both. The fries were a thumbs down-more batter than potato. My steak was perfectly cooked. Two in our party enjoyed the potato casserole, one did not. Very kid friendly with cute kids cups. I recommend making reservations. Our service was superb, but they are short staffed like everyone else up here. Go in with some patience and you should be just fine. read more

Just not the same. If they were striving to become a more generalized establishment with a wide range of mediocre offerings, they have succeeded. The shrimp dinners are what made this place a dining destination type restaurant and they simply are not up to par. The shrimp are so much smaller and overshadowed by the overdone breading. I'd rather pay more and have the shrimp back to a recognizable size. I would say they are trying to do too much and the quality has slipped. But that seems to have no impact on popularity as there just isn't that much to pick from in the area - especially in the winter months. The bread is nothing like the original. The pizza is a nice addition but is it necessary with all the added entree offerings. Sure miss the Argonne Supper Club and chalk this up to another historically fantastic restaurant to just ok and similar to so many others in this area. read more
