On the higher side of the pricing market for the general Houston area, this out-of-the-way nursery features great plants at slightly high prices, garden art at EXTREME prices, and a constantly busy marketplace. Positives: - wide selection of plants and trees - no charge for special orders - wide selection of natives - GREAT selection of pollinator friendly plants that are pesticide free ~ and you know because the host plants are covered in cats and eggs and aphids, and the nectar plants are frequented by many pollinators while you're there Negatives: - price - ordering in plants is hit or miss...be prepared to call Arbor Gate over and over again to ensure that your order was places, is accurate, and then to follow up on when your plants get in. Tonight we went to pick up the 2nd batch of plants that I'd ordered. Out of 6 plants (totally over $600) 2 were in good shape, 2 were water logged and having issues, 2 were absolutely unacceptable in terms of health. While the nice staff (when we could finally get the "right" people involved) tried hard to help but there were not 2 plants of the same size (for my symmetrical planting requirement) that were healthy. As these were very expensive roses that I'd waited WEEKS to get, I was heartily disappointed. For my harder to get plants, I'll make the trek...but there are nurseries that feature far better service that will be getting more of my gardening $$ in the future. read more

I think this place has a great selection but as was mentioned in the past their customer service is not that great. I strolled around on a Saturday, don't think I did anything to warranty any kind of malice. I only had one plant to purchase and I asked the guys outside the register house if I needed a ticket to pay or could I take the plant inside. I took the plant inside and paid for it and walked around inside with no problems. A lady that works out in the garden there followed me into the parking lot asking for my ticket to make sure I paid. I was highly embarrassed. Instead of asking the people that helped me if I paid she took it upon herself to follow me to the car. Next time I will be sure to keep my receipt handy-maybe taped to my forehead- as they must have a rash of people stealing $12 plants or they wouldn't find it necessary to follow me to my car to make sure I paid. The best nursery in the Houston area if not all of Texas. All employees are helpful and very knowledgeable. The nursery is an oasis of plants, yard art, collectilbes and the most beautiful selection of pots!! They offer a variety of classes that are informative and fun. My husband and I have attended classes on attracting bluebirds to your yard, raising roses, building your own water feature, using fresh herbs in your cooking, etc. That is a very short list of some of the ones we have attended. Each month you can find out their classes and events on their website or get on their mailing list. It is well worth it. Go see them any day of the week and see what I am talking about. You will walk away thinking, "That is the best nursery in all of Texas." Oh, I forgot to mention that my husband and I travel all the way from Dallas (5 hours away, 10 hours round trip) to visit, shop, get answers to our planting questions and get fresh, new ideas to creating a yard at our home we enjoy and are proud of. read more

Get ready cause this is a long one. This is not a review of the store itself, the store itself is great. this review is about how i saw two employees acting and treating a third fellow employee. this seems an appropriate place as any to file a complaint (and just ignoring customers) I've been to the arbor gate before. i heard about them on garden line and have picked up a couple of items for friends or family here. and my experience has been more or less on par with what you would expect a five to ten minute shopping trip to be. This time however i was so angered by how i saw the staff treat not only customers, but other employees as well, that i will NEVER shop here again. I would like to preface this by saying that being memorial day i expected things to be busy and inconvenient and i was prepared for this. what i did not expect, was to be treated so poorly by the staff while i was there. i was only here to buy a couple of things, so i decided to try and ask someone for help. i looked around for a bit but didn't see anyone who obviously worked there, just what looked like some customers. so i decided to wait in line, there were quite a few people in line but since there were two cashiers i didn't think it would take very long. no big deal. until the blonde cashier, i guess just decided she was done checking people out. and just kinda... left with something like 7 people in line and a number of others in the store. at first i thought she was going to help other customers inside with something, but then she just wandered casually outside and off to do something somewhere else. when i attempted to get her attention as she passed by, i was ignored. this may or may not have been intentional. i feel like it was. i could see the second cashier (the redhead) wasn't too happy about this, but she didn't complain and continued to be cheerful and work as quickly as she could, and be as helpful as possible with the customers, even going so far as to apologize to some of them for the wait. then the third employee showed up.a brunette girl, and i recognize her as one of the "customers" from earlier. while i did not ask her directly if she worked here before when i saw her, i also didn't see her helping any customers or answering any questions. (had i seen her before standing in line, perhaps a lot of this could have been avoided.) unfortunately for me, i became aware that she worked here right about the time she stepped behind the counter. i assumed she had arrived to replace the cashier who wandered off before, and that she would help. i was wrong. what she ACTUALLY did, was stand right behind the redheaded girl. like RIGHT BEHIND her. UNCOMFORTABLY close to her. uncomfortable for me, and i wasn't even the one having their space invaded. and then she just stood there. just... being in the way. while this poor redhead cashier is running around and trying to be nice to everyone and help everyone out. this other (not small) girl is just all up in the way, and just like standing there. not helping anyone, not checking anyone out, not really doing much of anything but getting in the way. now i'm angry. if you want to be useless, fine. but don't impede the only person trying to help me out in the process. Eventually, after hovering around as a useless obstruction for a few minutes, not small brunette girl wanders off to do whatever it is that she does, and blonde girl returns. whatever happened to blond girl while she was away must have been pretty upsetting because she came back in quite an angry mood. i happened to be just leaving the front of the line when she returned, having just been checked out by the red-headed cashier (who was super friendly, all smiles and apologized for the wait). the blonde girl then physically shoved the redhead cashier out of the way and practically growled something angrily at her. i would like to take a moment now to commend this redheaded cashier. she has just been abandoned at her post by a coworker for about ten minutes, had another co-worker hover and get in the way like someone trying to be menacing. has been furiously working in a blur without missing a beat and a smile on her face. had i been under this much pressure, and that girl laid her hands on me, there is no doubt in my mind i would have punched that girls lights out. or shoved her.but, this little redheaded girl obviously has more self control in her than i do. instead she took a couple of deep breaths and put her smile back on and went to work. i was in the store for approximately 15 minutes, and the redheaded cashier was the only one who had helped anyone the whole time. so. the short version of all of that is this. lazy blonde cashier and not small brunette cashier, worst customer service and rudest employees i have ever seen. also, they appear to be bullies. redhead cashier, hard worker, great customer service, impressive self control and super friendly. quick. read more

I have been to several plant nurseries around the area, but Arbor Gate is the best organized and informative I've ever experienced. Wow... I moved to Tomball a year ago TODAY and everyone of my neighbors during that time kept raving about this place called "Arbor Gate". I drive by it just about everyday but had not gone in till this Saturday when I was completely amazed and won over by this nursery's beauty, size, selection and helpful workers. I bought two Nagami Kumquat Trees (which nobody has anywhere else) and a 4 variety pear tree but wanted so much more. If you want pots for your plants, they have an amazing selection of beautiful glazed pots and along with everything else, including things you have never seen but can't live without. Everything appeared well-made and high quality. Prices are good and the place is full of gardens which are creatively decorated with all kinds of grand features and knick-knacks that you can use in your garden. The plants are VERY well marked with the best planting and care information I've ever seen. I brought my 10 year old daughter and we both loved the experience. I purchased a glass hummingbird feeder from the Arbor Gate about 3 weeks ago. I was in Tomball getting new tags for our motorcycle and stopped in afterwards. The kind woman who helped me showed me a hummingbird swing for $15 which I thought was cute and purchased. I spent about 20 minutes at the register talking to one of the designers about plans for my backyard. I had a great time and was going to return to purchase plants for our new home. When I got home, the hummingbird swing broke immediately upon taking it off the packaging. The red glass bead broke in half immediately. Drat. Since I don't live in Tomball, I was going to wait to exchange it when other errands sent me that direction. Since then, I put up the hummingbird feeder. After several days, I realized that the birds could not reach the solution once a small bit of the solution had been consumed. The design of the feeder was poor. This morning I was back in Tomball and I make a visit to the Arbor Gate to exchange these items. Not return. Exchange and look at some plants too. I did not have my receipts and they refused to help me. Even though I was speaking to the woman who waited on me a few weeks ago and she told me she remembered waiting on me!! They would NOT let me exchange the broken swing or the feeder that does not work properly. You would think that they would trust a customer and be interested in keeping my business and future business since I have 1/2 acre of yard to fill with landscaping - new beds and all. I guess they are afraid I am running an elaborate hummingbird product scheme. Beware!!!! Keep your receipts if ever buy something there. They will NOT help you or trust you otherwise. While this is a very nice nursery, the staff and ownership is not the best. Buyer Beware when purchasing a gift certificate! If for some reason you miss the expiration date, they will only honor 50% of the amount. The fee is excessive. Asked repeatedly to speak with the owner and left my phone number. The happiest place on Earth! I love The Arbor Gate and its amazing selection of plants that WILL GROW and thrive in Texas. Unlike other nurseries, if The Arbor Gate sells a plant, it grows here well. The staff is so knowledgeable about plant selection and what to grow where in your yard. They will also help you eliminate chemicals from your fertilizing and pest control regimen to have an even more beautiful yard that's safe for all kinds of wildlife, people and pets. Arbor Gate is truly amazing. I had heard about it through a friend who had visited one of their gardening classes -- and as a (really) novice gardener, I figured it wouldn't hurt to stop by when trying to figure out which plants to put in my new garden beds. It would be more helpful than Home Depot, I assumed? And BOY, was it ever. After driving past lush gardens and waddling ducks to the gravel parking lot, I made my way to an employee and asked who could help me pick out a few plants. Little did I know I would be directed to a horticulture expert with over 20 years experience in master gardening. The amazing, knowledgeable Linda spent over an hour with me, not just directing me to the right areas -- but handpicking out plant suggestions based on the feel I wanted, the colors I liked, the hardiness I desired, the care I had time to provide, the sizes I needed -- and the budget I needed to stay within. She filled my cart with a professionally-crafted garden of beautiful plants, she hand-drew me a landscaping plan of how and where to plant them so that they would be most attractive and successful. She chose colors, textures, heights and bloom times that all complemented each other. It was truly a level of customer service and care that I would've expected to pay hundreds of dollars (or more) for with a professional landscaping service. I was so impressed that I just visited again this week to ask Linda her thoughts on another area of my yard -- and again, another amazingly successful visit! Arbor Gate (and Linda) are like having your own personal landscaping company helping you create an individualized garden you will love -- no matter the time, budget, or experience you have.
