I don't know what is happening to the Houston Garden Center on Tomball Parkway off Highway 249. I've been shopping there for years, but my recent experience was very disappointing. On July 2, 2026 at around 8:00 a.m., I selected a shrub that was clearly marked at $30 (half price). When I got to the register, I noticed I was being charged $35 for the plant. I politely questioned the price and even told the cashier I had taken a picture of the sign showing it was marked at $30. Instead of offering to help or calling a manager, the cashier seemed completely uninterested and simply pointed toward the building, telling me to speak with the manager myself. I asked if she could please get the manager while I went to take a picture of the price, but she made no effort to assist. I then found the manager and took her to the display. The sign clearly showed the shrubs were priced at $30, and every plant in that section was the exact same variety. The manager told me the plant was probably misplaced and refused to honor the posted price, explaining that she was a new manager and could not do that. For a difference of only $5, I expected much better customer service. A business that values its customers would have honored the advertised price or at least made an effort to resolve the situation. I've always enjoyed shopping at this location, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I hope Houston Garden Center takes customer service more seriously in the future and ensures that prices are accurate and that employees are empowered to resolve simple issues professionally. read more

Lots of pepper and tomato plants for $2. Lots of citrus and fruit. People complain about the staff because they don't know anything or don't speak English but I knew what I wanted and didn't have any questions. Got hard to find hot peppers such as Trinidad scorpion and Carolina reaper. read more

Bad plants, even worse staff/service. When asking for a recommendation on a product they carried, I was advised by both cashier staff AND management that they don't get paid to have knowledge of the products they carry. Ummmm.... come again? I clarified my question again, only to be met with serious attitude. If it weren't for PFAS being closed for the day already, I'd have NEVER patronized here to begin with! Obviously it won't happen again either - lesson learned - I'll wait... I'd highly recommend going elsewhere and/or exercising EXTREME caution when visiting this establishment. This is the most poorly managed garden store I've ever been to. Clothing, backpacks, lunch containers and debris intermingled among the pots on the shelves and strewn along the floor. Two attendants standing there by the register saw me struggling with the large bags of potting soil and wouldn't lift a finger to help me nor help with getting the bags into my vehicle. 1. Service - I've read other reviews about this place, and they say that you have to do your own research to know more about the plants. I didn't ask any questions, as I did my own research, but people don't come to you. It's pretty much self serve. Grab a cart, pick up your plant, bring to the register, pay and go. But I must add though, if something is too heavy, someone will help you if you ask. They have never turned me away on that. 2. Price - can be pricey, you have to wait for the sale to go. I've seen it go to 50% and sometimes 70%! 3. Ambiance - 25% indoor, 75% outdoor. It's nice. 4. Plants - good quality plants. 5. Cleanliness - everything is organized and well kept. read more

I've been to 2 of these Houston Garden Center stores and I've come to the conclusion that it's the nursery equivalent of a Walmart. I'm not an experienced gardener so I need more advice and walked around the store for close to 30 min. No one said hi, asked if I needed help. This place is huge! I was trying to figure the needs between, hydrangeas, roses and hibiscus and couldn't find anyone! I don't have all day! Not only no one to help but no map or signs to point me in the right direction. Siri, which way to knock out roses? Useless. For such a large nursery with few workers, signage would have been a tremendous help or even care instructions on the plant would have been nice. Like this plant needs, full sun, a gardener who'll sing to it and occasional beer fertilizer. Nope. I had to look it up on the phone each time. More time wasted. Another negative is their return policy. No returns. I asked for acidic fertilizer for my blueberries and was given the opposite!! So annoyed. Do your plant and landscaping research on your own before you get here or use your handy dandy phone to look up info but wow. It could be so much better with little effort. read more

what a HORRIBLE experience at Houston Garden Center today. I stopped in to purchase a few larger plants, selecting three shrubs priced $49.99 and was refused the PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED discount! After being refused by the manager, I called corporate and the woman, Jennifer, was EXTREMELY rude!!! At first she refused to give me her name and then she refused to answer my simple question if the plants selected were shrubs. She merely kept repeating "They're not included in the discount", like a broken record. I told her I didn't appreciate her rude behavior and she told me she didn't like mine either!!! Unbelievable!!! She asked me who I thought I was speaking to her like that. I said like what? I told her that I am the customer, that's who I am. Again, unbelievable!!! I asked to speak to someone above her to which she replied that there was nobody above her. I asked her title and asked if she was the CEO to which she replied that the owner is out until Monday. I requested that she take my number and have him contact me at that time and she refused, stating that if I wanted to speak with him I could call him back!!! The employees are very friendly and I love it. today we got some plants and flowers for our garden since our plants died due to the snowstorm. They Have different kinds of flowers and we got a sale of white flowers and they were pretty and some flowers were on sale which is nice. I was at Houston Garden Center in Tomball, TX by HWY 249, I spoke to a staff explaining that I needed soil for veggie potting. She recommended a garden soil and I purchased it. I realized after I arrive home that garden soil was not recommended for veggie planting pot. I returned the garden soil to the store and was told that ALL SALES ARE FINAL, NO EXCHANGE, NO RETURN as stated on the receipt. I was informed that the staffs are not experts and that the store is CASH and CARRY. I do not understand why the staff is making recommendation when they are clueless about the items at the store. There is no sign anywhere that all sales are final until after you read your sale receipt. I will never patronize the store again. They are deceptive and are solely $$$ focus. read more

Do not buy Milkweed plants from here!!! I bought a 3 gallon Milkweed plant yesterday to add to my monarch enclosure. I woke up this morning with green vomit coming out of a few of the caterpillars. After some research I came to realize it was the new plant from here that poisoned my caterpillars! They use pesticides on all their plants! HGC, why would you treat Milkweed with pesticides when it is the only plant monarch caterpillars eat and is pesticides are poisonous to them?!? I literally have to throw that plant away now. read more

So i read all of the reports and most are bad. I have tried to call them multiple times to multiple locations and nobody at their stores will answer the phone. I am beyond frustrated, disgusted, and saddened. We spend $100+ every year for our tree at Houston Garden Center. My two small children are very sentimental, and adore all things related to Christmas.... including finding the perfect tree. This year, upon bringing our tree home, we found many dead limbs deep in the tree. We trimmed them, and hoped for the best... because we worked so hard to get the tree up to our fourth floor apartment... as it was seven feet tall, and I'm a newly single mom. Then, two weeks later, my son found fungus growing all over our fairly expensive tree (for a single mom that works part-time). We now have a tree that has 2-5 inch strands of fungus on each and every limb. I worry about all of our sentimental ornaments being covered in this stuff. We can't clean many of these ornaments, but my friends and family fear this fungus staying around our environment... and possibly being transferred to a future tree. I tried to call Houston Garden Center repeatedly. No answer. Now, a single mom has to touch all over this fungus to remove ornaments, and carry it down four floors. I bought five brand new strands of lights this year. I don't want to get that intimate with the fungus to retrieve them. That's another $30 I've lost. I'll never buy another tree from them ever again. Unacceptable. read more

Their 70% Off sale is not true - it is very selective; it doesn't apply to everything even though the sign implies everything. I bought 6 azaleas with the idea that I could return the ones I didn't want spending over $47. I brought the three I didn't need back and thought I could trade them in on a tree and buy more shrubs, but they refused to exchange or refund. Apparently there is a sign on the cashiers desk that says: "All sales final - no returns, no exchanges". Well, they live by that; no exceptions - not even if you come back to buy hundred dollars in trees or shrubs. Doesn't matter to them; it's their policy. I have always thought plant places were reasonable and would at least exchange something you don't want. It doesn't make sense since they lose no money. Nope not these guys, it is too much work to accomodate the customer. I'll never go back. read more
