This time we stopped at the library, & it's BEAUTIFUL. My mother said "I could spend all day in here - you just don't want to leave." The woman doesn't even read...!! Started down "dirty 6th street," then the library, then around to different landmarks. One of them was the cemetery which was gorgeous & Doug said you absolutely have to come back. There were about a dozen people on the tour. I didn't want to miss a word, and I'm not even from Texas! -Amanda was our tour guide, and she was like your favorite teacher--personable, friendly, and on top of her game. We rode the elevator with her after the tour and she continued talking to a teenager all the way out. I suspect if we had had lunch with her she could have talked the whole time about the history, building, and people of Texas. -The building is beautiful and full of interesting history. This tour takes about 45 minutes and gives you a greater appreciation for the men and women who played leadership roles in the great state of Texas. -The tour was simple enough for a ten year old to enjoy and compelling enough to keep your interest. Scrambling at the very last minute, I scoured Trip Advisor for a similar experience, and found Austin Detours. The tour was about to start, so I ran (yes, ran) through the 90+ degree Texas heat to arrive on time. My guide, David, was incredible, very interesting to listen to, and took us all around Austin. I really felt like I attained a better understanding for the city. He even took our picture at different spots, and the sweet treat was delightful. The only thing I didn't love was that the elder couple on the tour with me rambled about their political leanings, which I didn't agree with at all and I struggled to keep my mouth shut, but David did such a good job of delicately leading them off the topic on multiple occasions. Their tour is super reasonably priced, a value, really. I'd recommend them to anyone visiting Austin for the first time.

It's consists of a main house and a few smaller buildings on a lovely landscaped property that is fenced off and almost park-like. To be frank (not a pun) there is not much to see here. You can go inside the house and appreciate the 1800s furnishings and way of life, and stroll the shady grounds, but all that might take less than an hour. But if you go during events like Bastille Day when there are activities like playing petanque on the lawn, you'll find the place more lively. Regardless of when you visit there's a small dedicated parking lot attached which is welcome, and inexpensive metered street parking if the lot is full. The museum and grounds are an immaculately preserved oasis of green in East Austin very close to downtown.

My husband and I met up with 2 other couples and had a whirlwind of a time for the next 1.5 hrs. We were in Leo's cab, his wife had her own cab, and Caleb was the leader of the tour in another cab. We got a wonderful perspective of Austin while getting out pictures taken for unforgettable memories. Leo was charming and entertained us with tidbits of information about life in Austin. Once the tour was done, Leonardo was kind enough to bike us back to this park so we could walk across and get lunch at Terry Black's. I highly recommend this tour!

The walk to the boats was a bit tricky, especially for some of our older family members, as it follows a pedestrian and bike path. There is also poison ivy along the trail to discourage people from entering Lady Bird Lake, but there are no warning signs. Thankfully, one of our cousins who lives locally gave us a heads-up. Just before the tour began, it started pouring rain, and we all rushed up to the Hyatt Hotel to try to dry off. The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating, and the property itself is beautiful. Once the rain passed, we were fortunate that the tour was still able to continue. Our captain and tour guide, Molly, truly made the experience exceptional. She was warm, genuine, and incredibly engaging from start to finish. Molly shared fascinating insights about the Austin skyline and the history of the bats, making the tour both educational and entertaining. She also used a red light so we could clearly see the bats as they flew out from under the bridge, which was a highlight for everyone. The tour offers stunning views of Lady Bird Lake, the Austin skyline, and a beautiful sunset, all while learning about one of the city's most unique attractions.
