This is a historic pub close to Angel and we had high hopes for our meal there. The atmosphere is pretty nice, having been remodeled recently and the upstairs is especially pretty. They were having a private event when we visited. The server and the manager were so, so nice and really provided great service. Our drinks were fine but the food was really quite disappointing. I had a Caesar salad and the chicken was really bland. My husband had a schnitzel that was so burned and crispy he could barely eat it. I would probably not return for food but seems like a decent place for drinks. read more

Cozy pub close to the Angel mall. We were able to grab the couches next to the fire place in the back and it was quite comfortable. The stairway down to the washrooms is pretty interesting since the black walls feature literary quotes. (The washroom stalls themselves could use upgrades and more lighting though.) I really like this pub. Have been a few times over the years, the most recent being a week ago. I've never eaten here so can't comment on the food. The menu looks nice. The place has a nice vibe and, on a Thursday late afternoon, feels comfortable enough to sit in alone. I had a magazine though spent more time people watching. There was the after work crowd, a date, other people alone including one on a laptop. I can't remember everything I have drank here over the years but on this occasion I had prosecco. At £7 a glass, that is more expensive than most places at home in Manchester, but think it must be fairly standard London pricing. About 5-6 years ago I fell down the stayed coming from upstairs to down. I was drunk though the steps are quite steep. The stairs going down to the loos are windy and steep so watch out. There is a lovely little fountain in the basement too. I'd definitely recommend this pub to anyone in Angel. read more

I think that given the other reviews of this venue, that I need to try and come back on a different day and maybe even try the food. Then I might change my review. I came here on a Saturday night and it was heaving. I suppose that means its popular but I can't see the pleasure of waiting more than 10 minutes to get served then standing in a cramped space and almost spilling your drink (an excellent pint of Deuchers, mind you) every time someone near you moves or someone tries to get past. I suppose since the tube drinking ban its harder to have a drink in such batteryhenesque conditions, but its not for me. read more

The Angelic is usually pretty quiet even on the weekend. Its got a great juice bar downstairs, and the upstairs lounge has large comfortable sofas and cozy corner booths.There is a bar upstairs as well, and the food is the usual gastropub fare, in the normal price range for the area. I like all the food nibbles here, and the spaciousness of the lounge upstairs. Its a good spot to meet a bunch of people, if you all know where to go. Its really nice to eat outside on the benches in the summer, and its usually lively without being overcrowded. The bathrooms are brilliant. There is a comedy radio stream, lots of graffiti, fountains and plants. Its all the more fun if a bit tipsy. read more

The Angelic is my favourite pub. When I am shopping in Angel and want to sit and relax I go to the Angelic. If I've had a long day at work and want to meet friends for a drink, I go to the Angelic. Saturday afternoon are the best days to go to the Angelic. In the afternoon, it has not gotten really crowded and you can sit and have a nice lunch. The food at the Angelic is superb! Most of the time I order the salad and chips, delicious. The salad is fresh and the dressing is yummy. The chips are cooked perfectly and crispy. The balance of salad and chips makes me fill like I'm only being a little unhealthy. The pub also serves fresh juice and the drinks are so refreshing, especially on hot days. In the winter the fresh juice makes me feel healthy, as if I'm fighting off evil germs. The Angelic is an excellent place to grab lunch or dinner, the food is extremely good and the atmosphere is ideal for hanging out, no matter the day of the week. read more

Wait, this is pub fare? The translation that was going on in my American brain was "Umm, HUH? This food is... from a bar?" (Emphasis on Huh... 'cause that's how we do.) Could'a fooled me as I tucked into my scallops, spicy carrot & pumpkin soup and fresh rocket salad with finely grated Parmesan cheese. Raaaahhther! As I looked around the large rustic wooden table where our group of 10 was sitting, I caught myself drooling over a seafood paella with a mix of shrimp, scallops, clams, and muscles over a spicy Spanish rice and a lamb shoulder paired with garlic mash that was literally slipping off the bone. French? Spanish? British? Who cares when it's this good! Rumours of The Angelic getting painfully crowded swirled around me as I willingly floated off into a happy food coma and was only woken up upon a trip to the ladies when I literally found myself in an old horse stable listening to some sort of play on tape? Very odd indeed. But again... who cares when it's this good! We did not deal with a crowd issue in the slightest, however the food did take an exorbitant amount of time to arrive. But the atmosphere proved sustainable: relaxed and laid back, with sunshine streaming through the large windows, food begging to be devoured and cherubs singing hymns from the rafters. Erm, something like that. I can only imagine how divine the Sunday roast offerings are, and I will most certainly be back for a sampling myself. read more

This is a lovely big pub close to Angel station. The food is pretty good & the crowd is decent. The loos are lovely! I mean, for a pub, they are pretty nice! You walk down a stairwell away from the hustle & bustle of the pub, and suddenly, it is cosy, with low lighting, a water fountain, comedy is playing from the walls and all feels well with the world! One of my favourite pubs - I stil go even though I'm no longer an Islington local. At the weekend it's a great place for a Sunday roast, and on weeknights it's a great place to stay all night with friends. I celebrated a birthday here and a few quick drinks after work turned into a night out. It's a great place to stop for a smoothie (though I still haven't got the courage to try the one that has both banana and avocado in it) while shopping, or meet a friend, or grab a light lunch, or... see? it's versatile (it would have been much quicker just to say that, and would have sounded less like i LIVE there). The food is really good; the vegetarian roast option is way better than your usual nut roast - i've had butternut and spinach strudel and didn't even get food envy when my friend's hunk of nicely pink roast beef turned up. It also has a good value lunch for £7. They let you play Scrabble and read the papers, and there are board games and books to borrow. The upstairs is light spacious and a bit like someone's (your rich millionaire uncle's, perhaps) lounge, except with a handy bar at one end. My only gripe is that it's so busy there often aren't really enough staff so getting a drink can take a while. But the wine list is good, they play Eddie Izzard and Blackadder in the toilets, and they even lent us a knife to cut up and devour a Sainsburys-bought caterpillar cake (we had to give them a bit, but they didn't demand the head or any extra smarties). Lovely. ps. this is the sister pub of the Priory, in Clerkenwell, which serves the same/very similar menu, and does the lunch special. Its decor is a bit weird ('church roof reparation chic' is a new one on me) and it's not as comfortable or well laid out. read more

This is a good pub, but there is seriously no excuse for charging that much for beer. 1 pint and two half pints came to £12.50, and that was just standard lager-type beer. I like the atmosphere, and it's often packed, but I can't justify spending that much for a drink...especially when there are tons of other nice places about. I would give it 3 stars for the place itself, but the price means I'll not be back...so 2 stars it is. This is definitely an in-spot near Angel tube. The beer selection is mediocre. Haven't tried the food. It is hard to get a seat inside, so I've always done the on the pavement thing--so what's the point of a cool pub if you are standing on pavement next to Sainsburys? Seems to be a hot after-work spot in the hood. The bathrooms have comedy tapes running (ktichy-cool), although you do need to navigate a spiral staircase to get to them--a dangerous sport while consuming. read more

I've only been to the Angelic a couple of times in the many times I've been to Islington, and therein lies its problem, really. It suffers from being tucked away from Upper Street, where there are many other tempting options. That said, the Angelic was very busy the two times I've been, suggesting enough people do know of its whereabouts and are willing to troop there. But then again, that is my only other gripe with the place: seating space and lack thereof. It's a really nice pub once you're there and sat down. The beer options are plentiful and slightly more classy than other drinking holes - there are some nice European beers on offer as opposed to gassy English lager. The decor is trendy, as is the crowd and it has a great looking menu. Plus there are added extras like board games and comedy in the toilets. I'd definitely recommend this place for anyone in the area on an evening or for a weekend lunch. read more

Perfect place to windup from a yards day work. The atmosphere is pleasant, friendly bar staff and the crowd is hip n trendy with a dash of upper class middle class working folk. The room itself reminds me of new Orleans, high ceilings,mahogany interiors, candle lights on the tables etc. Comfy cheers inside and picnic tables outside, good location when you want to catch up with mates and see time go past. I never quite know how a night at the Angelic is going to turn out... it's usually packed to the gills from after-work crowds right up to closing. There's definately not enough seating, either inside or outside. Standard drinks and prices, perhaps a bit higher than normal London prices (which are already up there). I've had some great experiences people watching here, it's fun to watch the birthday parties. Other than that, I honestly don't see much difference from it and a million other pubs in Islington, trying super hard to be on the cutting edge and just not following through. I went here for lunch on Friday. I don't know the area, so relied on a friend's recommendation and was pleasantly surprised. I really wasn't expecting it to be so smart, and definitely not so quiet that close to Angel tube station! Open and airy, we pretty much had the place to ourselves for the first hour. The guys behind the bar were running table service (as is the norm for this place during the day). The food menu is pretty upmarket - though a little unneccessarily fussy - and there's a good selection. We ordered fish, a posh burger and some drinks, and were brought some fresh bread with olive oil/balsamic with our cutlery. After a few hours, we left having had a great meal and some great service. Check out the toilets as well. You have to swing past the bar, head down the spiral staircase and past the medieval fountain (yes, really). The theme continues throughout, with the staff sign saying 'Gimps' and Blackadder tapes playing in the bathrooms. read more

Have been here a few times, and brought some friends from overseas as well. As a gastropub, it's got pretty decent food. Part of the main draw those the decor, with high ceilings and multiple levels. The menu changes somewhat frequently, and the small plates for sharing are tasty as well. It's the kind of place that's good for stopping for a quick drink and a bite, or a full sitdown dinner. I picked this pub as it's super close to The Islington and we were seeing a gig there. Comfy sofas, delicious grub and friendly ambience with a laidback crowd. Someone else called out the toilets - I have to agree, they are pretty unique. You sorta feel like you're in a ship's cabin with the round port-hole type windows. The Angelic has a slightly weird feel of a juice bar turned pub. I can't quite put my finger on what is odd about it, but I do still like the place quite a lot, so am not going to complain. The people are usually friendly, bar staff included. They don't seem too perturbed by some rather odd suggestions for drinks, but then again, tending bars tends to throw a few curve balls, so taking it in one's stride is probably wise. I got the chance to go there twice for dinner, and I was both times really satisfied. The tapas are exquisite, and rich in flavors, though they are quite expensive for a rather small portion. Meat is delicious and very well cooked, and so is the fish. The service is ok, and the ambience, with the high ceilings, the gloomy staircase and the devilish toilets (there is one door for Gents, one for the Ladies, and one for Midgets :-), make it a special place to go out. I've only been hear on a Friday night and it was incredibly busy, which shows it's a popular pub but it wasn't good for me 'cos I had nowhere to sit. It was freezing and I had to sit outside, I didn't say for all that long. Apart from the lack of seating, it was very average. i see what they're trying to do - it's Islingtion, it's gastropub, it's cool. It never feels like it's rammed, but it's noisy with the gossip of the day floating up to the high ceilings. Very pleasant bar and restaurant in the heart of Angel and opposite Sainsburys. Comfortable seats and well maintained timber furniture and flooring gastro pub style. A two course lunch menu is only £10 and there are a fair few ales to choose from-try Sharpes Own dark ale. UPDATE:Went there this week and noticed that the place seems even more prententious..in an endearing way. The barman tells me they dont do Jack Daniels (only Jim Beam) and they dont do Guiness (only Murphys) and so ot goes ondownstairs the loos are adorned by a water feature after a long descent via a spiral staircasenot good when youre tipsy. Prices have gone up a lot from my last visit- three drinks for 13 quid! Stopped in for lunch and was very happy with the food and service. Kind of slow for a Friday but I arrived close to noon when they opened. The Super Foods Salad was amazing! You can order a starter or main entry but the starter size was generous. All sorts of healthy foods mixed together to make one great flavor. The fish of the day was sole with potatoes and greens. Definite 4 out of 5. It was good enough to want to explore the rest of the menu. The bar area is nice and looks to be a nice place to land for drinks with friends. There is seating all around including the dining tables, picnic style tables, sitting chairs and couches. Picture a large living room, dining room and bar. read more

The Angelic has it all; great decor, delicious food, friendlyish staff, good location, smoking area and perfect pub lighting. But something doesn't quite fit and that is quite possibly something to do with the hideous prices. I don't know who the chef / manager thinks he is but £11.50 for a burger is outrageous. I think they must consider themselves to be gourmet or something. It is good food, but there is no need to charge the earth. And the tapas food is tiny. Regardless of the outrageous spending needed for this pub, something nameless still doesn't quite gel for me. I wish I could be more specific, but there it is. read more

I went here for a friend's birthday party recently and really enjoyed it. The drinks are reasonably priced with a good selection. My friend booked an area of the pub, otherwise I don't think we'd have got a seat, it's obviously a popular place! I love the little touches such as the comedy tapes playing in the toilets! The decor, especially the fresco style ceilings on the first floor, it really adds to the atmosphere as well. The music is also good, but it's not so intrusive that you can't talk to your friends. I'd like to come back here to sample the food at some point :) read more

I was there yesterday evening. The place is beautiful, it has paintings on the ceilling and there is an upstairs room worth the try, but if you want a table at around 7PM you better book. We ordered two reasonably priced beers (£4 a pint) and a glass of red sicillian wine (£4.80). The ale was a bit short of taste, but we may have been out of luck and chose a bit randomly. We then ordered a Goat cheese cream thing (I don't exactly remember the name, but it definetly revolved around Goat cheese), and two Burgers with hand chipped potatoes. The Goatcheese thing was £7.50 and mostly emptiness in a plate, but tasted good. The burgers looked amazing (£12.5 + £1.5 for the potatoes) but were a bit dry (what is it about english people not asking how cooked you like your meat?) and lacking sauce. Overall, it is about fine, but I really expected better seeing the prices and the fact that it is supposed to be a gastronomic pub. read more

This pub is conveniently located across from Sainsburys and close to Angel station, which makes it easy for friends to find, even if they are not locals. The venue is actually spacious with high ceilings and large windows, which makes it a notable exception from the average dimly lit cramped corner pub. When we went a little after 10 pm on a Saturday night, a lot of the tables were still filled with diners, but luckily we found four ottomans in the corner by the bookcase, which gave us the perfect vantage point for people watching and also a convenient place to set our empty glasses (the bookcase). But after the table next to us had finished and left, the waiters took a long time to clear the table so it couldn't be immediately used for drinks. Overall, the vibe was all young 20/30 year olds, dressed up to go out- great place to start a night. read more

Terrible service with rude and obnoxious staff. They'll huff and puff, walk off midway through taking your order, and God forbid you ask them a question. We specifically asked what the waiting time for food was, 20 minutes. 10 minutes after we ordered they come over to tell us that half of what we ordered was off. 30 minutes later they come and tell us that almost all everything else we ordered was off as well. They didn't even apologise, and refused to accept that there was any problem with making us wait 30 minutes before even telling us. Terrible. Don't go here. Even the venue was pretentious, loud and cold. read more

Reasonable prices for London and comfy couches as well-the only downsides were that we had to clear off our own table when we sat down and there are signs that say watch out for thiefs-which isn't exactly comforting! read more

Super nice for a pub, similar to the Marylebone. it feels classy but not pretentious, way nicer than the bangers and mash type default pub that comes to mind. I normally see it pretty crowded but yesterday I went on a Wednesday and it was fairly free. Found a nice spot sitting at the bar and the stools were super comfy albeit a bit too tall for my petite height. would deeefinitely go back if i'm around the area, I wish the pub around the corner from my place was this nice! read more

Poncey, but nice. The Angelic's food is (sometimes) a high enough standard to justify the cost, and I have to applaud them for doing a splendid vegetarian cottage pie. Beers, if you care about such things, are apparently a bit dull here but like most people I'm generally looking for a glass of decent wine on a visit here. EDIT TO ADD: I'm falling a little out of love with the Angelic: it seems to have got pricier and the food is not of quite the standard I'd come to expect there any more. Worst of all, the service seems to have gone downhill. On a recent visit I was glared at for asking if I could order at the bar (I don't know what I did perhaps I spoke to quickly after he'd finished serving the previous customer? No idea) and made to feel like a waste of time. When I finally redeemed myself by ordering an expensive meal I was informed that bread was extra, and that if I wanted more than what came with one of our dishes I'd have to pay for it. Seems a bit stingey to me when customers are paying £10+ per dish. read more

We had a large group booking (47 people) for a 3 course Christmas lunch on a Saturday and the team did a FANTASTIC job. The food was delicious, the staff attentive and the upstairs room & bar perfect for a group of this size. They went above and beyond in terms of decorations and the entire group was happy - no easy thing to achieve! The professionalism leading in to the event was also great. Visited the Angelic on several occasions, and have always had a great time. We've had drinks downstairs in the main bar area (which is always crowded, so a sign it's popular), and attended private parties upstairs, where areas have been reserved, so it's slightly more spacious. The food is wonderful, and as it's tapas, means it's fun to try different foods and share with your friends over a few drinks. Drinks are not too badly priced, considering it's Islington. The whole bar has a lovely (if slightly middle-class) vibe to it, and I enjoy returning again and again. read more
