What an awesome experience we had here at The Rising Sun! My mom, my sister, and my grandmother and I dined here for dinner after it was recommended to us through our hotel. We had the sticky toffee pudding, fish and chips, and the Karaage Sticky Chicken! Food was delicious and loaded with flavor. Our server, Jen, provided excellent service and was so sweet and friendly. The bar is beautiful inside and the place is well decorated. We enjoyed every bit of this experience and look forward to coming back to try more desserts from Jen! read more

We stopped in at this pub after a long day of sightseeing. The pub really was geared more for adults than families, but we stayed and the servers were great with finding us a place to sit. The place is pretty loud and casual, so keep that in mind when visiting. We did have to order all the food at the bar and pre-pay. The food was then delivered about 20 minutes later. All the food we had was amazing and the 2 beers were really good too. My girls ordered a Bacon Burger and Cheese Toasty. My husband and I ended up sharing in the 5 shareables they offer in the menu along with extra fries. I ordered a Cider (strawberry and lime) and my husband ordered a beer that was on tap and recommended. Our total bill for everything came to about $100 US dollars. read more

Came here looking for a change after making an embarrassing number of visits to another nearby pub (Swan) in the same chain (Greene King). I was pretty disappointed. The menu is identical to Swan. I guess that's the same across the chain. But the food wasn't as good. Both my pie and my partner's burger were overcooked, arguably burned. Drinks are basically the same as Swan, but this place had just a single cask conditioned ales available rather than the 2-3 Swan always had. But the most concrete difference was the atmosphere. Swan feels like a nice little pub, while this place feels like a sports bar. Big TVs, loud volume. read more

Pretty typical pub for its location in central London, relatively few locals or repeat customers, none of the usual chat from the bar staff that you might get in a pub slightly out of the way that really focused on gaining repeat business. They know they'll get their walk in trade whether they work to be welcoming or not as they are bang on Tottenham Court Road. Large screen tellies, fruit machines, what you would expect. read more

This is a large, traditional corner pub in the central part of Tottenham Court Road, close to Goodge Street underground station, and is very popular with students throughout the day, complemented by shoppers and office workers at lunchtimes and after work. It serves a wide range of real-ales, with five hand-pumps, and the quality is usually pretty good. The staff seem efficient and friendly, although in the evenings it can get packed and you may have to wait a bit: the best experiences I have had have been on week-ends, in between bouts of shopping. There's outside seating on the pavement, as well as disabled access and a disabled loo. They do standard pub grub, with nice chips: they serve until 22h, which is worth knowing about. Before you enter, look up: the 150-year-old Victorian building is the most incredible architectural confection, in a sort of rococo Dutch gable style. The Rising Sun is a little dingy pub a few friends and I wondered into on a Thursday night after dinner at a local restaurant. It is pretty grubby but the staff is super nice and we found a table, which needed to be cleaned. Before we sat down the bar keep wiped down the table and made a few jokes. The drinks weren't bad and I am happy to report that the glasses were clean. Despite the grubbiness we did enjoy the pub. It is defiantly the staff that makes the place. There is nothing special in the drinks or the decor that would make me go back over and over and over again. But the staff would make me want to pop in for a drink if I was passing by, despite the dinginess of the place. read more

This TCR hangout has the feel of a chain pub about it, but I'm not sure it is part of a chain. It's set in a lovely old building but fairly nondescript inside, with traditional, rather crumbly pub decor and quiz machines. It can get uncomfortably busy from Thursday night onwards, and is actually quite cramped when they show footie. Despite this I have a bit of a soft spot for the rising sun: it is as others have said a 'solid pub', and a great option if you are meeting friends and want a nice easy-to-find outpost. They experimented a while ago with table service, but I believe it had now gone back to normal pub rules has changed hands a fair few times, it seems. read more

Gotta love a pub that makes an effort to serve you as opposed the majority of pubs in Londontown that make it seem as if pulling you a pint is a favour. That alone makes Rising Sun a good place to go for a cheeky beverage with some mates. The place is spacious and the decor is definitely interesting. The walls and even ceiling are wallpapered with a slick glossy textured paper that shifts in tones from deep red/black to a shiny almost blood-coloured shade. It's a bit odd to look around but strangely works as a backdrop to the various items that adorn the wall (paintings not chainsaws in case you were wondering). My main gripe is that the pub quiz machine is awkwardly placed behind a pillar so it's hard to get a group around it. Move the damn thing out into the open...you know we all love to play on it! read more

Great service, rancid food! If it were possible to rate with no stars I might consider it. The food from this pub has got to be the most rancid I've ever tasted. Even a Weatherspoon's regular would turn their nose up at it. The pub itself is a total dive, an old man's pub without the charm. The bar staff on the other hand were absolutely lovely, two really helpful, friendly girls who were very quick to serve. I do wonder if this is because they know how utterly awful the food is and are trying, in the only way they can, to compensate. These bar staff need poaching and put into a decent pub. We ordered a 'city sharer' platter as were advised by the friendly staff that it was the nicest on the menu (they reassured us after that it genuinely was). I dread to think what everything else tasted like. After being stranded in London and walking in the rain we were starving and would have pretty much eaten anything but we couldn't eat this, the sausage and chicken wings smelt so vile I couldn't even risk it, my partner did and he felt very sick afterwards. I would say if you just want a drink and aren't bothered about surroundings then you can't go wrong but if you want ANY kind of food, even just chips, don't risk it. I can't stress this enough - guys if you take your girlfriend in here she will NOT be impressed... Advice to the pub - if that's the best food you can produce I wouldn't bother, at least you'd be known as a good boozer with friendly staff. read more

I wandered in here some time ago after a spot of computer shopping on Tottenham Court Road. I think the only reason we ended up coming here was because there was no other bars nearby as computer shops make up the whole of Tottenham Court Road basically This pub is a pretty standard English bar, nothing to write home about really. Tottenham Court Road is pretty nondescript. It doesn't really have a huge amount of charm does it? unless you're a gadget freak. (I'm not, really.) But, it's central. This is where I met my boyfriend on our first date. It was simple enough - he came out of Goodge Street and it was the first pub he spotted. Otherwise, I'm pretty certain we wouldn't have gone in. There's just nothing that special about it. But it's tottenham Court Road - don't expect too much. If you feel like a beer and you're in the area, you'll do fine, but it's not the kind of place you'll rush back to. read more

Granted, I haven't been here in close to ten years, but when I was a student in London, I and my best friend used to frequent this place, as it was around the corner from one of our classrooms, and hence perfectly located for afternoons of ditching class to get drunk and then go shopping for cut-rate CDs at the Tottenham Ct. Virgin Megastore. You know how we Americans are known for our focus on academics... Anyway, I agree with the other two reviewers--the staff makes the place (or at least they did then, and it sounds like they still do!). They also, at that time (and hopefully still) had a fantastic steak and ale pie that was really delicious. I love this place--my best friend sadly passed away shortly after we returned from London, and this place--trite and maudlin as this may be--will always have a place in my history from the staff giving me so many good times with my closest friend. read more

Been there on a Friday night. Experience: A number of wasted blokes trying to sing some hymns, annoying everyone else in the pub. The food is junk and below average pub food. The guys at the bar are unfriendly and keep chatting with a bunch of drunk regulars oblivious to the rest of the people waiting. The ale I got was the worst I've ever tried, called Madcow or something similar. Paid with a credit card and got charged extra £8 for something I didn't order. For a bar on Tottenham Court Road, this really isn't a bad pub at all! The drinks are reasonably priced and the food is tasty, with a good selection of 'specials' every day. And they offer student discount so even better! The pub itself is nicely decorated inside, and there's a strange mix of old men, students and working professionals who gather here, but it works really quite well.
