When in Chicago, I stay in close proximity to The Ambassador, and am happy to say that the experience is better every time I'm there. The hotel went through some rough times, a foreclosure, and the COVID impacts. The current owners recognize what they have, and are taking strides to get the hotel where its history needs for it to be. The Ambassador Room (the former Pump Room, then Booth One), continues to improve. The drinks are good, the food is good, and when they have it, the live entertainment is good. For years, the bar was a great watering hole for neighbors living in Chicago's Gold Coast. Significant progress is being made to reclaim that. Keep it up. read more

To begin with, this hotel is a complete fraud starting with the pictures on their website. The photos make the property look modern, spacious, and well maintained, but the reality was the exact opposite. This is supposedly a luxurious hotel, but the room we received looked nothing like what was advertised online. Moreover, the cleanliness was extremely disappointing. The room was not properly dusted or cleaned, the couch looked dirty and worn, and the overall condition made the space feel neglected. The restroom was also very small and uncomfortable to use, especially considering we booked a Junior Suite expecting more space and comfort. Furthermore, the bed frame was broken, which made the bed feel unstable and poorly maintained. This is something that should absolutely be checked before guests arrive. In addition, the customer service was awful. We asked multiple times for additional bedding, including blankets and sheets, and never received them. Requests seemed to be ignored, which only made the experience more frustrating. Moreover, we even went to the front desk and told the clerk that we were not satisfied with our room. Despite explaining the issues we experienced, they did not offer any compensation, solution, or even attempt to make the situation right. The only positive part of my stay was the valet service. They were the one team that actually provided good service and professionalism. Overall, I booked the Junior Suite expecting a comfortable and enjoyable stay at what is supposed to be a luxury hotel, but unfortunately I did not enjoy my stay at all. Had a great stay at The Ambassador Room, which is now run by Hyatt. The location was fantastic, walking distance to Lake Michigan, a bunch of shops and restaurants, and the red line. We had a king room which was spacious and comfortable, the AC worked great, the bed was nice and firm, and they had blackout blinds that helped keep the room dark at night and cool in the day when we were gone. Everyone we talked to at the front desk was friendly, and they were quick to take action on any service requests we had, waters, more towels, etc. The hotel has a bar and gym, I didn't use either on my visit, but it was nice to know the options were there if needed. The area was super clean and safe, and we loved being able to walk to so many places from our hotel. We were also pretty close to a few bike racks, so we were able to walk to those an get bikes almost daily. read more

Pretty decent stay. I was mostly glad we were able to find rooms at the last minute. The area is nice and has decent things to eat or visit. I took off a star because we did find a roach in the room and one of the days housekeeping didn't come. I did really like the texting service which was quick and responsive. I also think the staff there don't enjoy working there so management should look into improving their employee experience so they actually want to show up and engage with customers. The rooms do have carpet but I understand they're under new management so looked past it this time. The carpets were honestly disgusting but otherwise the room was fine Overall, the hotel has soooo much potential. I hope it gets to go back to its glory days. read more

Great experience here. Free early check-in if you are a Hyatt member. Staff was very friendly. Location too is hard to beat. Right by the water and a quick stroll into downtown. Would easily stay here again. Only complaint was that the bathroom especially the shower was quite small. Would also recommend finding parking nearby elsewhere. BEWARE OF RIDICULOUS HIDDEN FEES. $398.26 of just FEES for a two night stay in a double bed room. $281.35 of just FEES for a two night stay in a king bed room. All on top of what we already had paid to book the hotel. These fees were not disclosed upon booking. These fees included breakfast and alcoholic drinks (not everyone in our group drinks alcohol) but these should be optional and not forced upon the customers. It wouldn't be so bad if the price we paid reflected in the quality of the rooms, which seemed old and outdated. Toilet was leaking and we found spiders in the room. We were rudely awaken led by housekeeping, who loudly knocked on our door BEFORE we checked out to see if we were still in there - even with the DO NOT DISTURB SIGN hanging on the door handle -_- It wasn't even close to checkout time. For the total price, we would have preferred booked a much nicer place with upfront costs. The practice of hotels charging undisclosed fees, like resort fees or destination fees, is considered a scam. These fees are often tacked on at the end of the booking process, after a customer has already been lured in by a lower advertised price. The Ambassador Gold Coast is a textbook tourist trap masquerading as a 4-star hotel, but delivers all the charm of a rundown airport motel with a side of corporate gaslighting. I booked a 3-night stay through Capital One Travel for $440 -- taxes and fees included (or so I thought). Upon arrival, I was hit with a completely undisclosed $415 in "hotel fees." That's almost doubling the price of the stay, and yes, I brought this up at the front desk. The woman working didn't even blink. In fact, she seemed so used to the complaint that I suspect this is part of their business model: rope guests in with a low rate, then extort them at check-in. When I asked what exactly these fees were paying for, I got the following insult to my intelligence: Breakfast each morning (more on that tragic meal in a moment) One "drink" at the bar (more on that scam below) And -- this is real -- a "gift bag" with six bottles of water, but only if you come to the front desk each morning like a sad trick-or-treater. Not convinced, I asked to speak with a manager. She seemed to agree I had a point -- after reading my confirmation email and acknowledging the extra fees were not mentioned anywhere. She asked me to forward it to the hotel and promised a refund. Of course, that never happened. What followed was a comedy of silence and evasiveness. I followed up multiple times via email, phone, and even text. Crickets. Eventually, some guy named Brandon Falor, the Vice President of Asset Management (a title that really screams "I avoid accountability for a living") told me the fees were valid and that I should've known better. He essentially implied it was my fault for getting scammed. Never mind that even their own front desk staff admitted this happens constantly, and a quick scan of TripAdvisor shows a graveyard of angry reviews from guests burned the same way. Now -- the breakfast. Imagine prison food, but more expensive and less nutritious. My wife referred to it as "slop," which frankly feels generous. Think watery scrambled eggs, soggy toast, and bacon so thin it probably qualifies as a transparency sheet. But hey, we figured we paid for it (twice), so we choked it down. And that free drink they proudly advertise? You get one well spirit mixed with a basic mixer like club soda or Coke. Want an actual cocktail? That'll cost you extra -- because apparently this place believes charging full price for half-service is a luxury experience. This hotel is a scam wrapped in mid-century wallpaper. It hides behind a "boutique" label to justify charging exorbitant "resort-style" fees for shamefully bad amenities and then gaslights guests when they push back. I posted this review on Google and feel it's necessary to post it on any platform available so customers don't ever need to feel the experience at this hotel chain. Be cautious as this hotel was recently purchased by new investors (as explained by gal who checked us in). Our air conditioner would be absurdly loud when it turned on. We informed the front desk, an engineer did visit, but we were never given a different room. When writing to the regional director, she indicated "we could not guarantee a unit with different sound levels, as variations can occur between rooms." Basically, it was an attempt to say, "Sorry, but your concerns reflect the quality of air conditioning in all of our rooms." This is a review of The Ambassador Hotel itself and not the restaurant. We had an early morning flight out of O'Hare so we weren't able to take advantage of our breakfast benefits. The Ambassador Hotel is located on the Gold Coast on a nice residential street right by Lake Michigan. The hotel is located inside a historical building and you can see that by its facade and how they made use of the layout in the interior. It's ornate, but not ostentatious. The hotel once was part of Ian Schrager's empire and you can still see those elements of the Ian Schrager design. Minimalism at its finest. We were upgraded to a terrace suite which had a fantastic view of the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan. The suite was large with a full living room, dining area, a small kitchen with a fridge and two walk in closets. Whether true or not, this was Michael Jordan's preferred suite whenever he's in town. It wasn't all perfect though. The bathroom was very small for the size of the suite, with a shower tub combo. There was a glass divider for the shower, but for some odd reason they also added a shower curtain. The shower was not wide enough to accommodate a curtain so I found it uncomfortable when the curtain was get stuck to my skin when I showered. Also, while the terrace was fantastic and large, there was one chair on the terrace. So it was somewhat of a disregarded space. That was disappointing as there was so much you can do with that space. The kitchen was a nice idea, but rather useless as the sink was a micro sink. The one issue we found and because we had an early flight was the walls and doors lacked sound insulation. We could hear drunk partiers walking from the elevator to their room on the other end of the building. Also, it's definitely not an accessible building as you have to go up several flights of stairs immediately entering the hotel. Overall, it was a nice stay for what it was and served its purpose for us, but if you're looking for elegance and you're within the World of Hyatt program, I would choose the Park Hyatt on the Magnificent Mile rather than The Ambassador. Even in its central location, the Park Hyatt felt like you were in a different world once inside and insulated you from the hustle and bustle of the Mag Mile. read more

Review for the hotel itself: The ambassador is a comfortable elegant stay in the Golden coast neighborhood in Chicago. A little further away, but a bit quieter and very comfortable. The staff here are excellent. The housekeeping is polite and timely, the maintenance team was quick to assist with a question about the tv and the front desk was prompt and responsive with additional requests. The room itself is wonderful. A bit tight on the entry due to it being an old historic building. But once inside the room it is spacious and very comfortable. Soft new carpet on the floor, a large tv and an ac unit that works better than nearly every hotel I've stayed at (and I travel 2-3 times a month). The bathroom is also gorgeous. Marble floors that recall the history of the building, a spacious bath/shower combo. It feels more homely than many hotels but still maintains elegance. Very comfortable. Where do I start. I booked the hotel through Work Advantage. The old adage is true. If it sounds too good to be true. It is. The price was resonable. Once we got our confirmation we were notified to expect to pay and additional 160.00 when checking it. Still resonable. Imagine our out rage when we checked in and the additional cost was not 160.00 but 519.80. When I questioned the front desk they informed me to bring it up with the Third party I originally booked it through. We were given Breakfast voucher and drink tickets. I truly don't think the drinks had much alcohol. The table top was nasty. When we asked the waiter to wipe it down. He told it was the finish. Nothing he could do about it. Like many of the more recent comments here, there are significant hidden fees sprung on you during check in. These are presented as a mandatory breakfast + drink package of $85 per night + service charges. Additionally, I appear to be double charged for a hotel recovery fee (paid once during the booking process and again at check in, see pictures for details). These hidden resort fees were not advertised transparently at the time of our booking and we are being forced to incur a cost that was added AFTER completion of purchase without any notice prior to our check in date. My party booked 9 rooms in total for 2 nights and each room type is subject to these fees. This amounts to $280-$400 additional PER ROOM!! We're finding out these changes came about from a recent change in management. The timeline is easy to track along with the string of other 1 star reviews. Well come to find out at the time of check out on Monday I looked at my Amex statement and I was charged for the full stay. I went to speak to the manager downstairs and advised that this was handled on Friday she said she has no knowledge of anything and that they have no payment information from booking so they charged my card which I did not authorize. I am disputing charges with booking and my Amex card. This is unacceptable, the staff and management major attitude, seems like they running a scam, scamming people of their money. BEWARE!!!!! They got bought out by a new owner and they are scamming people! They advertising extremely good rates online but when you get there they require you to pay for an additional package at $89 a night and 18% and refuse to give you the money you booked at back. In the end, you either have to leave the hotel and pay for a hotel that you didn't stay at or pay double for their package that you didn't know about until you arrive. SCAM ALERT!! If I could give this hotel zero stars I honestly would. I am not one to write many reviews for bad service but please DO NOT give this hotel your business. We recently stayed at this hotel the weekend of the Chicago marathon 10/9-10/11, which we booked through a third party. Originally, we were only going to stay 10/9-10/10 but decided to stay an extra night (10/11) in which we booked on a separate reservation. Anyways, 3 days before our trip I called the hotel and an employee by the name of Fernando, confirmed our reservations. When we got to the hotel, to our surprise, the last reservation was cancelled. The manager told us "the third party" cancelled it. We were so upset and really believed it. However, we quickly realized that almost everyone in line were getting their reservations cancelled. We all started talking about this situation and all of us had booked through different third parties such as Expedia, hopper, capital one etc. To make a long story short, this hotel cancels people's reservations with no notice so that once you're there you're stuck paying a higher price. They have low rates through third parties to attract customers, but will cancel your reservation that you've already paid for! Marathon weekend every other hotel was expensive and booked, we had no choice but to pay their price which was 3 times the price we had paid originally through our third party. I am sure this hotel has contracts in place with third parties and this is definitely a breach of their agreement. You can't lure people to your hotel with enticing rates all to change prices at check-in. This has to be illegal! They will blame the third party. Lastly, the front desk is rude with terrible customer service. Housekeeping only comes every 3 days. Their all inclusive package which is a mandatory extra $140 a night, doesn't even cover all drinks at the bar (you get 2 free drink per couple per day). The included breakfast is mediocre. When this hotel was part of the Hyatt collection, it used to be great but has gone downhill. This place should shut down for scamming people, I really don't understand how it's still even operating. I complained to the city of Chicago and the Better Business Bureau. *If you are reading this review and you were one of those affected or you are a third party i urge you to PLEASE complain to the city of Chicago and the BBB. The only reason I tried this restaurant was because I was staying at the hotel. The bartender, Carolina, was friendly when we first sat down. She told us about the hotel and offered her favorites on the menu. Service was fast. My friends had the hummus and said it was amazing. We said we would be back as she highly recommended the bread pudding. When we returned later that evening, she was a completely different person. We had left some papers on the bar. When we asked if she had it, She looked us in the eye and said no, I threw that away. No apologies, no nothing. It also took us forever to get our drinks. I went back later in the week to have breakfast - again because I was staying at the hotel and it was raining. I had the breakfast sandwich minus meat and coffee. The food came quickly. It was fresh and the salad was very salty! Looked beautiful. Once everything was served I barely saw my waiter. I had to get my own refill of coffee. I watched others do the same. Not impressed. Highly recommend the Somerset. It is worth walking .3 miles in the rain. read more

Visiting Chicago and of course the Ambassador on the gold coast is where we are staying. This is a charming beaux arts style hotel featuring a mix of architectural charm and contemporary styles. On check in we were helped by Lola. She was warm, welcoming, observed all the Globalist perks. Lola went out of her way to make sure our stay would be five stars. She found us a delightful and very comfortable room. Also Lola, Kiera and Jasmine sent a nice snack up to our room too. They really pay attention to details here. Ultimately any hotel is really just a big box of bedrooms, it is outstanding people like Lola, Kiera and Jasmine that bring it to life. Highly recommend. read more

My parents booked this place through Priceline.com for a pretty good deal during the busy summer months but upon checking in, they were told that they did not have them in the system. My parents tried calling Priceline.com because they had a confirmation number through them but they were redirected to an automated answering machine and could not get it resolved. The Ambassadors hotel refused to accommodate them and charged almost double the amount for what my parents paid for already because my parents had nowhere else to go. So, my parents had to cancel their credit card that was charged to Priceline.com This exact situation happened to my other friend who lives in the same building to her friend!!!. It sounds like this happens quite a bit at this hotel and so I am thinking of reporting them to the better business bureau. Something very fishy is going on here and it is really terrible. I do not recommend this hotel. On top of all of this, the finishes in the hotel were dirty, the plaster on the ceiling was peeling off and it was quite noisy. read more

I reserved a wedding room block here, which included about 30 rooms and one of the suites to get ready in. After the ownership change in April, I was extremely disappointed in the level of service and communication. It was nearly impossible to reach anyone at the front desk, the phone number only led to a loop that redirected me to a text service, which never responded. Our welcome bags were not delivered to more than half of our guests. Despite asking 4-5 times for extra stools and tables to be set up in the suite, nothing was ready when I arrived, and I was repeatedly told by different staff members that it wasn't their responsibility. On top of that, the AC stopped working, and the outdoor terrace was filthy. Aside from the convenient location, I cannot recommend this hotel, especially for an important event. read more

Once a marvelous hotel, the Ambassador Room has fallen on hard times. Guest noise will travel easily between adjoining rooms. So, like us, you may hear other hotel guests all night. Great location, Excellent Staff, Dirty Rooms Stayed at the Ambassador a couple times over the summer, won't be returning. The front desk staff is wonderful, kind and helpful. Beautiful lobby. Walkable, convenient location. The rooms were nasty. Stained pillows and curtains, dirty floors. Towels that need to be replaced. Used q-tips on bathroom floor. Aside from these obvious cleaning shortfalls, the place is desperately in need of a remodel and refresh. I'm sure back in its day it was very nice, but there comes a point where things are so old they can't be cleaned anymore and need to be replaced (toilets, sinks, tubs). The Ambassador is at this point. This is evident from the dated fixtures to the cracked molding and worn out furniture. I hope they can start improving the property to match the level of its outstanding front of house staff. read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. This hotel is the cheapest in the area for a reason. There was a hole in the bathroom ceiling with what appeared to be mold on it. The room smelled like mildew/mold. Also, there was water on the floor around the toilet so either it was leaking or water coming in from the hole in the ceiling. On top of this major issue, there were about 12 people deep in the check-in line, so be prepared to wait up to 30 minutes or more to get checked in. There is a concierge desk, but no one is ever there. I know this because one of my keys did not work and I had to go back downstairs to wait in line again. The hotel is very understaffed so the service is terrible. I checked in on July 21st. I left a note at the front desk the very next morning and asked for a manager to call me to discuss. To date not one person has called me from the hotel. On July 25th I called and spoke to a call center. I told them I wanted to speak to someone and didn't just want to jump online to give a bad review. Again, no one has called me to date. I was given the management office's email so I emailed them on July 25. An email was returned on July 26th requesting the photos and video that I took. The only thing good about this hotel is the location. They have no service and I would be concerned, for health reasons, to stay there again. read more

Came here with a friend to try afternoon tea and was so disappointed. First they require a charge card to reserve with consequence of being charged fee if don't make It or have to cancel late which I can understand but not when they charge the card without authorization. Friend and I split the tab and completed credit card transactions but then apparently they did it wrong and just processed card on file with no contact what so ever. They also automatically charge 20% tip to bill regardless of party size and then misleadingly put it on bill labeled as "service charge" and never mentioned this during meal. Tea options were plentiful and they were willing to bring more then one choice if request. Cakes were okay. Enjoyed scones the best but no comparison to afternoon tea experience in England. Over the stay, housekeeping completely missed servicing our room three days. On Sunday I gave the housekeeper a $5 tip before leaving and we still did not receive service that day. Additionally, four times the housekeeper did not leave body wash. She left four bottles, however she doubled up on lotion. One day she left a trash bag on the floor. Then on Monday this week, she also left a trash bag in our room. While one of these things are minor, the continued missed service and attention to detail demonstrates a lack of process and checklist for the housekeeping staff. I would like to mention the housekeeping staff did turn in a pair of Ugg slippers to security when they were left in the room upon checking out, which I appreciated. Upon checking out, I mentioned to the counter clerk that I purchased the parking stay package, the person checked with the manager and was instructed on how to charge for the room. HMMMMMM.... The 2 page paper receipt provided to me at checkout did not match the email copy I received. There was a third page of parking charges on the email copy; charges were for $24 per day. Again, I am not sure why there is a disconnect here, but it is bad business to omit details at check out. Since then, the manager has adjusted my credit card for the additional parking charges. Horrible. Do NOT stay here. Hotel is dirty, the service is atrocious. They hit you with ridiculous hidden fees upon check-in--and the hotel is in disrepair. Over my one night stay I was woken 3 separate times due to maintenance issues in my room, which required 3 separate maintenance visits to my room. My room had faulty smoke detectors, malfunctioning toilets and plumbing in the bathroom in the middle of the night. The most unbelievably rude and unprofessional front desk staff handled these concerns and I was given no compensation for the sleepless night. Moreover, NO employees from the front desk followed up with me about my maintenance issues, or to offer an apology. IN FACT, I called down to leave comments for management after the last maintenance visit (at 12AM), and the front desk actually ignored my call and instead just sent the maintenance guy back up to knock on my door yet again. I asked what he needed and he said the "front desk saw my room calling and just sent him back up". Really terrible customer service. It's filthy, horribly managed and not worth your money. read more

We snagged a last minute reservation here to celebrate my friend/business partner's birthday. We just wanted to eat Chinese takeout and watch movies and get away from the fams. The lobby is lovely. There is a sitting room off the lobby that is just gorgeous. I think if Covid wasn't a thing, they serve coffee and such in there. But it's just for sitting now. Bummer. Check in was sloooooow. There were two parties ahead of us and it took like a half hour. Our room felt... vintage. Small. We could hear our neighbors. But honestly, it was perfect for what we needed so it's all good. The location is amazing. Lots of things within walking distance. A good overall experience. read more

GUEST BEWARE I booked this hotel last year for $91 as a Hyatt and thatbwas basically what I paid save for a few normal city taxes. I enjoyed the room and it was a short walk to my favorite beach. This time I booked it for $76 AFTER it had been sold to Chicago Hotel Collection yet it was still advertised as Hyatt. Upon arrival I was "greeted" with a tone setting sign that explained that guests have basically paid half the fee and an $89.95 resort or VIP member fee along w an additional %18 processing fee would be charged in my case an additional $128!! And that yelling at staff wont be tolerated by law as if they knew what their $ policy would evoke Also I paid for a free cancelation wifh 48 hours room which I tried to cancel 3 days prior and was alerted there is a $76 cancelation fee so I was stuck. I had no idea what was to come. A young lady innthe lobby was nearly in tears as she had booked the hotel for nearly a week for $400 while she was between homes and had all her belongings w her. She was told she owed another $800!! I watched 2 other guest go through this and the desknworkers response was we hear this every day you can complian but it wont change anything. I spoke to the GM Michael whomsaid they cant control that 3rd party booking platforms dont inform us of the $89.95 fee. Michael you said you have a partnership w priceline and expedia and a few others that you monitor...well they still list you as Hyatt. Do your GD job and get it straight. Finally in the morning another guest said he didnt want the Member package charge and I simply said "you dont have a choice bud" he was stunned. what do you mean and ai proceeded to explain to him in front of the desk clerk how they were fleecing him. His $90 booking would soon be $220 and the hotel smuggly didnt care. what a wild business model. While they claim the $89.95 gets you tons of perks that would be fine if were an OPTION which it is not. Its MANDATOR. And lets be real of all the "perks" they promote here is what most guests will actually use...2 cocktails and continental breakfast which was absolutely on par w any holiday inn express. #1 I dont drink so thanks for nothing. #2 i dont eat at hotels for breakfast because I go to Yolk...my favorite spot. Again thanks for nothing. I was supposed to get a $25 e card emailed to me but when I called about it Inwas told to email the GM and he could probably get it to me...ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!? The hotel was sold by Hyatt in default of loan its public knowledge and the Chicago Hotel Collection is simply trying to get as much money as possible by winning the battle and losing the war. None of the guests in that lobby will ever stay there again and I travel to chicago 2x a month. Why should we? Ive stayed at 15 different hotels and aside from small destination fees of maybe $20 NONE of the other hotels impose a fee so outrageous as $89.95. And yes it is the ambassadors job to track 3rd party booking sites for accuracy and transparency to avoid this very issue. The desk workers looked miserable dealing w angry guests every day over this fee matter. The joy of hospitality is doing small things to make guests happy. That wasnt happening at the Ambassador. I cant wrap my mind around a company using such a short term plan that will enure repeat business doesnt happen. We have too many choices in Chicago to deal with this BS. DO NOT STAY HERE! One of the worst experiences I've ever had at a hotel period. Absolutely horrible from the moment I checked in. 9PM the smoke detector in my room malfunctioned, followed by a lengthy maintenance visit. 11PM I'm woken up by the toilet and plumbing malfunctioning. Another maintenance visit. The front desk service is atrocious. I called down after the SECOND maintenance visit to give comments for management--they ignored my call and instead sent maintence back up without any indication from me that was the reason for the follow-up. Beware! This hotel will tag on around $150 per night to the room. Complete bait and switch scam. They lure people in with low rate of around $90, but in the end you find up paying $250/night. The hotel is dated and poorly kept. I only chose to book a room there is because of the advertised price. I would have stayed at a nicer hotel if I was made aware of the actual cost per night. I feel so ripped off that I am going to avoid booking rooms through Hyatt group moving forward. read more
