The Abbey is a church converted into a beer bar and tasting room. Located adjacent to a running stream, the ambience is fabulous. Plenty of outside seating with great photo opportunities. Lots of indoor seating also and games available to play while you pass the time and enjoy one of the many beers the Abbey offers. Food is also available although we did not order food as we had other plans for the day. Many customers were ordering brisket sandwiches, which looked delicious. We will definitely come back to the Abbey again. Cool merchandise for sale also with fun T-shirts and sweatpants. I did not pack enough clothes for the cooler temperatures during our stay in the area and ended up buying a pair of sweatpants which are comfortable and well-made. Our eyes are bigger than our stomachs! We came here for lunch after a hike and could hardly finish all the food. We did, of course, since it was sooo delicious and we don't like wasting food (especially delicious food)!! We were in town for Bronco Super Celebration at the Townsend visitor center and after all day being in the field we didn't want to go all the way into Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge and deal with crowds. We were wanting cider and were pleasantly surprised to find this location. Can't wait to see what it becomes! Great food, great atmosphere, great service, the staff was excellent. Great vibe, unique selection of beers and food was tasty. Townsend Abbey is adjacent to the river used by River Rat tubing. If you are tubing you can park your tube on the river bank and walk up for some food and drinks. They have a large outdoor area with indoors seating as well. They also have live music inside of the Abbey which makes for great acoustics. read more

What a great find in Townsend. This restored church is a fabulous and wonderfully unique place for an afternoon out. There is space galore; the main dining room, the side dining room with bar (where you order), the "other side" dining room with large glass folding doors, and then the outside area with small performing venue, and a small grassy area next to that, and it all sits right on the river's edge. You pick up your menu at the bar, peruse that along with the beer (and wine) selection on the chalkboard, step up, and order away. My wife and I shared the Sasquatch burger (fried kale with aioli and dijon mustard on a brioche bun). I tried the Abbey Pilsner. The beer was good, and the burger outstanding. What great flavor throughout (and a sinister way of eating your veggies). After sitting in the large open air dining room (because an employee folded back the doors), we sat outside for another round of beer and entertainment. The band playing was phenomenal! This place will be on our permanent list of restaurants in Townsend. read more

Absolutely amazing service! Went to pick up food since this was one of the only places open in the area past 8 PM. Don't let their website fool you, great menu and even better people working there! Ended up staying and chatting with Elijah and Kimberley about Cade's Cove. Enjoyed a beer on their patio. They even offered to hold our food in the warmer while we finished our beer. I visited Townsend Abbey 2 weekends ago with great anticipation. I read all the glowing reviews and was stoked to eat there. Everything started out nicely enough. The location and grounds were beautiful and the establishment was very unique and interesting for a restaurant. Additionally, the staff was very friendly and helpful. Everything was spot-on until the food arrived. The food was solidly sub-par. It was as if the food was all purchased from the freezer section at Costco or Sam's Club, microwaved and put on their plate (I'm guessing it probably was). On another note, the beer was served very cold and was the highlight of what went into my belly! If you go expecting the food to be warmed up freezer food (and be ready for that) then the Townsend Abbey is a wonderful place to visit. read more

River front, pub style, very relaxed, reasonably priced. I went for the first time a year ago when I was in town for a wedding and we stopped in again for a few drinks and lunch this week. They are expanding the venue to make more room for events which was awesome to see. I got the pork sliders and a few ciders and my friend got the beer cheese and pretzels. Pretzels were amazing and buttery and the dip was nice and sharp. The pork sliders were good, but the coleslaw was disappointing. Service was really friendly and they have a little gift shop which makes it a fun stop on a road trip. read more

Aside from being absolutely gorgeous inside, the food was absolutely incredible. We as a group got 3 things quite different from one another, each thing looked delicious and tasted even better. There aren't any "waitresses" but there are directions on where to go to order. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The only small issue was the kitchen closed a little earlier than the actual establishment. The food is well worth the price, my $15 burger came with tater tots and a pickle! Absolutely delicious will come again! Skip the pancake house in front all together and come straight here. read more

Hard pass on this place for both food and service. Have to stand in line to order- stand in line to get a cup of water - find your own table and then wait for your food to be dropped off. Venue is very unique as appears to be old church but food is nothing more than bar food. FYI don't even try to come around closing-- if inside and waiting in line before closing and get to counter to order at closing you will be turned away!! That is just bad service all around. Too many other places in Townsend that have both great service and awesome food!!!! read more

The experience here was definitely extremely quirky. When my boyfriend and I arrived in a dazed and confused state after a 9 mile hike, we actually thought we were in the wrong place. You walk in the front door immediately into the room they have live music in, with folding card tables and chairs. We didn't see a hostess and didn't know where the bar was, but fortunately a nice man came to reassure us and lead us because we looked lost. They have many unique beers at this restaurant so it was fun to try something new. The menu was pretty standard bar food. We ordered a flat bread, chili cheese tots thanks to another Yelp reviewer, and wings. You could tell that some of our order had been sitting a while before served, our tots got a bit soggy. There's a lot of construction in the space right now so I think with the updates it will be more lively. I imagine the outside is great in the summer with the lit patio! Did the trick for when we were hungry - I think a host to direct people would go a long way! read more

Food is mostly 7/10, of course I've really only had the wings and flatbreads, but Steve's bbq is a highlight. Great beer selection and outdoor area, and there's just something so deeply satisfying about drinking a beer in a church. The addition to the building doesn't really fit the rest of the places vibe tho and that's kind of off. Like the building is an old church, wood floors etc, and the addition is like a community center vibe. Hard to pick between this and peaceful side for best lunch place in town but this place is less corporate vibes. We had lunch at The Abbey on Saturday. I had the flatbread pizza - really good, and my husband had the chicken tenders, which were large, nicely breaded and very tasty. He had a beer that was very nice. We also saw the burger, and it looked wonderful, and the brisket sandwich, that will definitely be my next visit selection. They have packaged dessert bars from a bakery across the street that are superb. Right on the river, great architecture, friendly staff, all added up to a great visit. read more

I really wanted to love this place but the food prohibited that. The 2 stars are for the building and the setting or it would've been 1. This place has huge potential because of the location by the river, the inside church and the need for good restaurants in Townsend; however, the food is so subpar, it hugely misses the mark. The service is virtually non existent because you have to wait on yourself every step of the way with little direction. We had to go inside 3 times for different items we didn't know we were supposed to get ourselves. The chicken tenders were terrible. They were a big portion but there was literally no flavor. My husband had the special which was jambalaya. It was very mediocre. Sadly, I can't see us ever returning for a meal. read more

I really don't like giving bad reviews, but this one is necessary. My wife an I were give a recommendation of the Abbey by an acquaintance. We followed them on Facebook and decided to stop by. We took our pup and sat on the back patio. While the setting has a bunch of possibility, the place is very worn down and not maintained. the patio had what looked like weeks of dirt tracked in, the landscaping was pretty much either dead or dying and the beds had garbage scattered about. The menu was quite limited. We had a ham and cheese sandwich and a hamburger. The sandwich was OK. Nothing either good or bad. The hamburger was what you'd expect at a gas station. The meat was dry and rubbery which was clearly frozen, with iceberg lettuce, white onion and a slice of tomato. Probably the worst hamburger that I've had in years. The service was the non-existent. The food was dropped off without condiments. Had to get packages of catsup and mayo from a basket near the bar. I regret leaving a tip. My recommendation is to go the Peaceful Side Social instead. read more

Love this quaint pub to grab a beer and sit by the River. Appetizers are very good as well. Nice selection of craft beer and others. Always nice to sit and watch the River happenings. Can be crowded with tubing crowd. Hopefully off season will settle down a little. read more
