I walked into That 80's Bar fully aware of its mixed reviews. A lot of 1-star complaints about strict rules, bad service, and the overall experience had me wondering if we were making a mistake. But our friends and my wife and I wanted to catch up somewhere with live music, so we gave it a shot. At its core, this place is exactly what it claims to be--a loud, divey 80's-themed bar with a dance floor, a DJ, and a live band. Drinks were basic but fine--no craft cocktails here, but that's not what this place is about. The crowd was mostly in the 30-50 range, with some younger and older. The vibe was definitely high energy, and for a lot of people there, it seemed like a fun, let-loose kind of night. The Experience: Crazy loud. Between the DJ and the band, it was LOUD--like, can't-hear-your-own-thoughts loud. Maybe we're just getting old, but we left when our ears couldn't take any more. Past Action Heroes were a wild ride. The band was high-energy and kept the crowd going, but for us, the constant sex jokes got old fast. Funny once, maybe twice... but after every song, it felt like overkill. The dancing crowd didn't seem to mind, so maybe that's just us. The atmosphere is what you'd expect. A dive bar with neon, a packed dance floor, and a crowd that's mostly there to party. If you're looking for a chill spot to sip drinks and chat, this isn't it. The Not-So-Great: No food + no re-entry is a bad combo. If you won't let people back in, at least offer some bar snacks. Rules matter, but so does customer experience. The no re-entry thing makes sense from a security perspective, but it doesn't make sense for customer satisfaction. They bent the rule for us, and that made a difference. They've been beaten up in reviews, but some complaints are valid. I can see why people either love or hate this place. The energy is great, but the policies and volume level might not be for everyone. Final Take: Honestly, this is a 3-star place for me, but I'm giving it 5 stars because they broke their own rule to accommodate us--which tells me they actually do care about the customer experience. Plus, I think some of the 1-star reviews are overly harsh. That said, management should take consistent feedback seriously. Would I go back? Maybe, with earplugs. Would I recommend it? Depends. If you love loud music, high-energy bands, and don't mind some over-the-top humor, this might be your spot. If you're looking for a more balanced, relaxed experience, this probably isn't it. Either way, if you go--eat first.

The speakeasy of Tron in 2024! I am missing this lay out so much! The drinks were amazing!!! I really hope they re do this set up!!! Especially with the new movie coming out!!!

Deadites!

I haven't been to That 80s bar itself. Only twice for The Tron Speakeasy and the Evil dead speakeasy. Tickets are limited online and reserved timed so come early so you have enough time to enjoy your stay at the speakeasy. You're ticket comes with one drink token. Parking is either street or a swamp meet parking lot across the way. The Evil dead speakeasy had to be one of my favorites. The characters they hired and the whole theme. I love horror so I would definitely do it again according to a theme I enjoy.

Tribute shows coming up

I don't recommend coming here. If you go to the speakeasy next door, they will literally watch you if you come next door to the 80s bar, and then cut you off in drinks. They told my friend she's cut off because she's intoxicated. I didn't realize we had a drink limit if we do both. Apparently we don't but they're cutting us off regardless. It's her birthday and they're ruining it. They said she's intoxicated yet she is in heels, has not fallen, hasn't even tripped, hasn't done anything sloppy. Hasnt dropped a drink. This is incredibly unfair. Aside from the mistreatment of my friend, the drinks are still wack. 4 drinks here, two at the speakeasy and I'm sober lol this is ridiculous. $120 later not including two entrance fees you would think I would have a buzz. If you want good music and bad drinks this is the place for you

Naughty and Nice cocktails

The bar isn't in the best area. The parking lot is across the street and didn't feel safe. A woman approached me trying to give me a "med spa goody bag" and there was a voice recording that kept blasting nearby with a warning of being too close to their building and a recording in progress. *THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE ROTATING SPEAKEASY IN THE BACK, SPECIFICALLY THE MATTERHORN LODGE* Overall opinion: fun theme, expensive drinks, long wait, small space, unique experience. Made reservations for the pop-up speakeasy (that seems to have a rotating theme) and there were plenty time slots to choose from the later half of the evening. When we got there they let us know they were 25 minutes behind but by the time we got in it was 35 mins past our reserved time. As they escorted us to the bar they let us know there was a two-drink minimum which came as a surprise. We're told that drinks ordered at the bar with cash got a discount so we headed there first. The discount for paying cash was $.88 lol. The drinks were pretty, and strong, taste was OK. We then tried to find a place to stand because it was so packed. I was under the impression the reservation meant we got seats but you have to try to snag the limited spots when people leave. We stood awkwardly smashed in the back taking in the scene. The decor was perfectly Matterhorn and yeti themed. Lots of fun details including screens playing snow themes that made you feel like you were in the mountains. We were lucky to get a seat about 20 mins in since it seemed like they kept letting more people in while only a few people left. We decided we weren't going to stay much longer and didn't want to get in a long line to order more $20(!!) drinks. You could use a QR code to order by table but the wait would've probably also been long. We waited until we saw the yeti who makes an appearance I think every hour or so, which was fun since the actor in the suit made it a point to go up to all guests and interact/take pics, then left within an hour of getting in. Despite the wait, crowd, and expensive drinks, I'm glad we went. Was worth checking out and made for a one-of-a-kind night.

This place was so awesome I've been to many in LA area and they're super crowded, AC doesn't work, rude staff and expensive. However this one is not bad. $15 cover charge. Fish bowls are $25 The staff is super friendly Bartenders make great drinks. Live bands are super entertaining Plenty of parking and seating. No creepy ppl. Everyone is there to have a good time. Will definitely come back

Not terribly inventive Mexican given what's out there in DTLA or even OC but kudos for attempts at menu expansion! I do think the guacamole is really good, the mezcal offerings are awesome, the decor is upscale and Happy Hour pricing is worthwhile. I find this restaurant very loud however. Because of that, I booked outside seating on OpenTable for Cinco de Mayo for drinks at 6:30 for 4 of us. We arrived at 6:25. We were notified that they were running behind, but still were not seated at 7... we were told there was no outdoor seatings coming up in the near future but they could honor our reservation shortly at an indoor table... but unfortunately it was club-decibel live music for the holiday so we went elsewhere. I do feel that managing holiday crowds and reservations is a reasonable expectation for a restaurant of this caliber/ price point. Recommend as a local option only but with a few caveats, not my top choice.

Surprised us with birthday cakes!! ( Mother in-laws & mine) Food: Duck Tacos - 8 / 10 Surprisingly great flavor and would order again for quick bite if I came back Tuna Tartare - 5 / 10 Happy they chose to pair with wonton chips, but the sauce and the flavor altogether just missed the mark. Shocked to say that Lime & Salt & even Yard House blew this app out of the water. Manila Clam Chowder: 7 / 10 Chunky, creamy, but too Salty. They added bacon not chopped up in the chowder, but instead thrown on top as if it fell onto the bowl on it's way out of the kitchen prep (see pic) Calamari: 7 / 10 Basic breading and could have been better if sauces paired were complimentary but they were not. They offered 1 sauce that just tasted like a watered down Zested shallot, the other I think is like a thinned out marinara. Both did not enhance the app, but actually made it less appetizing. Fresh Pappardelle w/Chicken: 5 / 10 Great portion of protein to pasta, but heavily lacked flavor. I've had pasta with no sauce, just simple olive oil, but this dish...not like those. Unfortunately, tasted bland. Wild Alaskan Salmon: 8 / 10 It was crispy but not sure if that was what they were going for or it was a tad overcooked. But the flavor was great, quinoa pairing worked. I get the need for colorful presentation too, but they could have gone w/less tomatoes and instead more of the mangos & perhaps added cucumbers for a more fresh & colorful approach Chilean Seabass: 7 / 10 Description was "Pepper crusted..saffron Asparagus Risotto...Orange Glaze w\Vanilla Bean cream sauce" First bite was like a basic white fish. 4 bites later, then I finally tasted a hint of pepper crust (not all over as I hoped because it enhanced the flavor so much!) The Asparagus risotto base was a huge disappointment--I would have enjoyed this fish more with roasted veggies, because I was hyped up to experience an 'Orange glaze w/Vanilla bean cream sauce " in the risotto, but instead tasted like bland porridge with 2 bits of asparagus chunks that I think they could have left out. It was a shame, I also did not taste any orange glaze anything. *For such a high price point on these main entrees and salads-- I had expectations for their dishes to be refined & elevated. This would work best at a $22/plate experience not the $50+ range they are charging.

They've got indoor and outdoor seating and they seemed a touch understaffed for being a beautiful day. It was also a Tuesday lunchtime so maybe they weren't expecting it to be as busy as it was. We were able to prove the menu before we got seated. And our super friendly server came out and we were able to order right away. They've got a lunch special. That is a small personal pizza with a salad and we each got that. Salads came out first and I had the arugula salad, which was absolutely phenomenal. 10 of 10 would eat this every single day. The arugula was peppery and it was well dressed in a lemon vinaigrette type sauce. I am a fan of just plain lemon on mine, but this was delicious. My husband got a union salad, which is their specialty I guess. It's got colored carrots and some beets and some shallots. I thought the dressing was bland and it certainly needed salt and pepper. We asked for both and didn't get either. Our pieces came out and they were nice and woodfired. I feel like they could've been done just a little bit longer maybe a minute or two. The sauce was a lovely fresh type crushed tomato sauce. The cheese was nice and gooey and did not feel or taste like a package of processed cheese. Pepperonis were greasy, but in a real meat kind of way. I had to dab mine, but my husband just went to town on his. The pickled peppers is a pickled jalapeño. Big chunks of them. They certainly didn't skimp on any of the toppings. They were a little sweet and a little hot. Some of the big chunks were a little too sweet for my liking but overall, it was a nice flavor mix Also from a size standpoint, I thought the salad and pizza were very adequate for lunch at around $20 price point I asked for salt and pepper again as well as a side of ranch. This time we did get the salt and pepper as well as cheese and crushed red pepper. But we didn't get the ranch until we were leaving. The server did apologize and said he thought someone else was bringing it out but I pretty much deducted a star because we asked for a couple different things that never came. A friend I met many years ago at a wine tasting invited me to a Burgundy wine class at Packing House Wines, and I attended. The store is located up a few steps on the north side of the Claremont Packing House. Parking is usually not an issue as there is a big multi-level parking garage on the east side of the packing house. All attendees sat down to a list of wines to be tasted, a printed out copy of the slides being presented, a big burgundy wine glass for pours, water, and a nice little charcuterie plate. The owner Sal gave the presentation, and it was easily the best wine class I have ever attended. He talks pretty fast, but not too fast, and his delivery was excellent, providing an extensive amount of information that was easy to understand. We pretty much learned everything about Burgundy wines from the history of the region, the stringent production laws, different classes of Burgundy wines, and details about all of the different producers and regions we tasted wines from. The class was scheduled for two hours, but it ended up lasting for two and a half hours. It would have been easy to stay for much longer as the class and wines were very enjoyable. The wine class was a little pricey at $125 per person, but this was a bargain as Burgundy wines are expensive. We were able to taste ten 1.5 ounce pours including several Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines (one of them was $350/bottle). My favorites were the '17 Albert Bichot Fixin ($53.99) and the '20 Domaine Lecheneaut Vosne Romanee ($124.99) which I purchased. They have wine classes regularly, and I will definitely return if one catches my eye. They have quite a selection of wines for sale, as well as tasting flights and food from their kitchen.
