First, If you have a common size, it's hit or miss if they will have the shoes you want. I'm a pretty common size for men, and there was one pair of shoes, out of nine that could have been shoes I would have purchased, that had my size. Next, they have very tiny benches in each isle. The problem is that most isles only have one of them; often leaving you without a place to sit and try on the shoes. There also isn't anywhere to place boxes that you're trying, except for the floor. I'm a bit older, and that really just isn't an option. When I was helping my daughter try on shoes, it was very awkward. The last thing I will mention, from this trip, is that they have no rain boots for kids other than very small ones for toddlers. Other locations may have some, but this location didn't. One note on this is that I asked an employee where they had them and he went to five different boots and after the forth time, I had to tell him he wasn't looking at rain boots. He finally looked at me and simply said, "You'll have to ask up front." What this tells me is that they do not invest in training of their employees. I imagine they cover mandatory topics, but they clearly do not make them competent shoes sales people. I don't necessarily expect that, but I would expect them to teach their employees the basics. If you know these things about their operation, you'll have a better experience.

The staff brought out several styles in more than one size. I'm a little self-conscious about the size of my feet relative to my height, so whenever possible, I don't take their advice to go up a half size. (Hint: it's not usually possible.) I was surprised by how willing the staff was to bring out multiple shoes until I found the right pair for me. Even though they almost always have several customers and sometimes have a line, the staff members always come back to check in, but not intrusively like restaurant wait staff who ask "How is everything?" after you've just taken a bite. The insoles may seem like a gimmick at first, and they will set you back an additional $120. Since they're going to make them anyway, you should put them in your selected shoes. Like me, you will be sold! They are worth it. They will make your feet feel even better in your shoes! Finally, there's the VIP program, which gives you 10% off all purchases as well as between 5 and 15% cash back, depending on your level of membership. Since I didn't want to pay shipping, the sandals would be shipped to the store for pick-up. (In the past, if the order was placed in-store, the shoes would be shipped to your home for free. Times have changed.) Before I even got home from my day out, I received an email from Footwear Etc. stating that my sandals were ready for pick-up!!! Thankfully I waited a few days before deciding to pick them up, because I received an email from Footwear Etc. with a "$10 birthday reward" to redeem! This morning, I asked a gentleman at the Dollar Store if I can take a photo of his shoes. It looked very cool and comfortable. He said it is Hoka and he gave me the name of the store where he bought it: Footwear, etc (Willow Glen). They have a store in Los Gatos as well. In Willow Glen, they have that machine that measures pressure points of your feet. It helps identify challenges you may have with your feet as far as walking, comfort, etc. Sarah was very helpful. She brought me 5 different pairs of shoes and patiently helped me wear them, tying and untying the laces. I told her I can do it but she was very kind. She explained to me the different features of each pair of shoe until we were able to identified the top 2 choices. When testing the shoes (inside the store), I noticed that 2 pairs allowed me to walk normally without pain (which I have not experienced in the last 3 years or so). Even after my back (sciatica) surgery in December, I still feel discomfort and pain. With the Hoka shoes on, I felt my walk was so normal. And, for about $20 more than the New Balance, I am getting a very comfortable and reliable and very scientifically produced pair of shoes. On top of that, their designs are very cool and modern.
